Excellent video! Thank you for taking the time to make this. Try pitching with the guy lines at the corners choked all the way in. This will make a better pitch because the angle of the guy lines will more closely match the angles of the walls, and the walls themselves function as guy lines would on any other tent. Then just raise the canopy as needed, keeping the ridgeline parallel with the horizon and you'll see you get a stronger pitch that's also tighter. Don't worry about keeping the poles or guy lines the same length, nor the gap consistent around the bottom of the fly to the ground. THEN and only then add more stakes as needed. The only reason I mention it is because if you start with the guy lines extended and then extend the poles you'll get a curved wall, which isn't as strong and will usually induce wrinkles/flapping. I bet that'll be faster and easier for you. On the door roll, I like your technique. I have a standard version, and not sure if it'd work as well as the Dyneema (though I'm curious): I'll grab it about where you did, but then flip up the hanging/lower part of the door to the body of the tent and roll it up from the new 'point' created, sometimes gathering a bit more. This puts more of the door material up by the magnet with less toward the bottom so it isn't prone to go loose and flap and pull the magnet tab loose.
I think one of the great things about the X-mids is the vestibule areas. While the relatively small size of a one man inner seems snug, with the addition of the two large, and usable, vestibule spaces it really makes a big difference. I lived in my X-mid for 30 continuous nights last year, absolutely loved it.
I have an x mid 1 solid. Best tent I've ever owned. Same as you, got bungee on the side and mid panels. I'm 6ft2 with size 13 feet. I would say length wise you wouldn't want to be much longer on a thick pad. I bought a groundsheet from quintcraft, makes a big difference re condensation. Great content as usual 👏
Thank you for talking about condensation and its causes and getting it right, proper does my head in when I watch someone bang about it and single/double wall tents. Two things I'd add: 1. you can wipe the condensation off the inside of the fly easier with a single wall (I do it in my quilt if it gets bad in the night). 2. You don't *have* to zip up the fly door when you sleep. It's the biggest vent your tent has. I sleep with it open more than I do with it shut. Only tent I've used when on my own is my liteway illusion solo since I got it. Love it. Wish they made the duo when I bought it, mind (I too am a lanky 6'2" bugger).

Yours is half the weight again compared to mine 👍 Love the design, the fabric and ease of use and ide highly recommend either yours or the std version of the X- Mid . Doing the Affric Kintail way and a North to South Dartmoor trek in the next few weeks and cant wait, regardless of the weather 😁 Maybe nextyear to get my packweight down even thurther ill invest in a dcf pro version ? Ill see how yours does if you do a winter wildcamp,,, ill proberbly do a winter camp in my 1p solid 😁 not during the gails and heavy rain though, but those still ,crisp and frosty days/night 👍 Good video, enjoyed that insight 😁
I have the X-Mid and used it in winter conditions. Loved it so much…..I got the Pro version too and shed a good few grams. I use the optional ground sheet too …. bth … you can use a house wrap instead for much less $.

I wish reviewers would just inflate their pad and do the review with it in the tent instead of just referencing to it. There is a huge difference in usable length when you are 10cm of the ground with sloping walls. Is is near useless just lying in there without any gear. Dont be lazy, inflate a pad :).

What trousers are you wearing in this video? I want a "proper" pair that are roomy (for winter layering) and stretchy as I have large thighs. Yours look like they've got a relaxed fit and could be a possibility for me. My go to pair are wearing thin after about 10 years :(
Good comment re. condensation, terrible for it in the Cricket in the Howgills last weekend, temperature, relative humidity, and wind, you can try mitigate it but .......
One thing that puts me off unfortunately is the colour. i have found that tents of a similar colour can feel cold and miserable if i have to spend any large amounts of time inside.
Not something I'd do automatically, but if you had to pitch on already wet ground - and bearing in mind the lack of a full-floor footprint or space inside the 'inner' for your pack -, by the time you came to attach your pack to the pole most of the weight would already be out of it, so hanging the fairly empty pack from the pole at that point to stop it getting even wetter does make some sense.
I modded mine with the shock cord on the same points you did yours. General consensus on the x mid group though was that you should just use regular cord, maybe it’s different advice though for dcf fabric.
Great review! I also go to the Alps once per year, and wonder is there a problem pitching it to the not perfectly flat spots or tight spots. I went ahead and purchased solid version , will see how it works for me, it it’s ok woll definitely get DCF. Cheers

Well reviewed vid.ive got the 1p solid and tbh it's surprised me with the space as I'm used to using 2p tents.the stability is great.i do find I've had to adjust the height of the poles differently a cpl time just because the ground was a bit lumpy.i swapped the guys and corner lines to 2mm I find it sits in the little notches better as I found they kept slipping with the supplied lines.i think coming into contact with the single skin in a 1p version would be annoying for some I know it would me also having drafts that's why I went with the solid.
I have the 1 solid too, and have the same issue. It comes with 2.5mm standard...so does going down .5mm really make a difference? I read some-one upped it to 3mm...like the pro?
@GH02-o_o I've also seen some go to 3mm but I went to 2mm there's a little notch in the runners and it seems to bite into it better just make sure you tie a big knot on end so it can't pull alway through
Love this tent, but to me, for the cost, it seems like you’re not getting a lot. No poles, alterations to cords to make them better, I realise that’s personal preference, maybe I’m being daft, but it’s light because it’s just material in a bag 🤷♂️
Interesting video. Your thoughts on porch is interesting as I find them very poor in size and usability. The mid tie outs bungee makes lot of sense but the hems needing bungee are those hems not reinforced like MLD hems? It's good for taller people by looks of it. Anyone saying single skin not for uk are talking out bottom 😅 been using them for 12 years 😊
i used to attach shock cord to my mld's tony..the duomid & cricket both had shock cord..even if the seams are reinforced it takes away that single point of strain at that point in strong winds..its something ive done a long time on these trype of shelters with mid panel guy points.
@AndrewBeavers yes absolutely on mid tie points . I was referring to the hem points at bottom. But 100% always bungee on middle panel points. Like you always done that. They not really needed anyway those middle points but they probably add a bit of piece of mind
I’ve just got the xmid2 solid 😅inner version and I’m wishing I’d gotten the 1 man, the 2 man is huge! With 2 vestibules you really don’t need as much room inside the sleeping area. But I do prefer two skins both to keep me away from the (as you say, inevitable) condensation but also for extra warmth in winter and a bit more darkness inside in the summer. I’ve only had it up in the garden so far but have a 4 day trip to Knoydart coming up at the end of August so we’ll see how it goes then. Good review and I’ll be fitting those shock cord loops to mine before I go.

seen 30 mph gusts twice in it & stood fine..some folk dont realise how strong 30 mph gusts are & ive seen plenty over exaggerate those speeds stating 60mph.. had rain a couple times too but yeah generally totally happy with it.
A fantastic review of a fantastic looking tent. Just one question from me Andy, I’m thinking of buying the standard version, but I don’t use trekking poles. Have u or do u know of anyone that has used the Durston Z Flick tent poles instead.
I use the z-flick poles for an MLD Trailstar and they’ve been perfect. Buy the little rubber feet available as replacements for trekking poles for the ends you place on the ground. If you’re worried about pressure on the fabric end you could use half a tennis/squash ball to spread the fabric a bit (also works well in the TS).

Hi Ray, subscriber and big fan of your videos. Would like to know why it’s a tent you’re not keen on trying…. The price maybe? That’s what’s putting me off but still very interested in this shelter. Always been a belt and braces hilleberg guy and recently bought a vern 1 for this winter. But as a lightwieght fair weather late spring to early autumn shelter option I am interested in this shelter(including long distance hikes during this time period)ATB👍
@@TomSerty To be honest I prefer a tent with a solid inner, even during summer. For me when doing summit camps I feel the cold with the slightest breeze even with a decent sleeping bag. Unless it is really scorchio which is few and far between in my neck of the woods. But maybe just getting old :) Price is another factor as spent too much over the years on gear as it is.
@@RS.Outdoors I agree with Ray . The single skin tents are not for me the problem. But the mesh is for me the problem and bring a lot of cold inside of the tent. So for me always a solid inner. For example the tarp tent stratosphere with the solid inner tent.
What did you pay for it, including import tax etc (assuming you ordered direct)? They sell them at Valley and Peak now for £690 so just wondering which was is cheapest
The import tax and VAT for me was £63. You can claim the £22 customs tax element back due to a UK/Canada trade agreement ; Commodity 6306220000 rule for synthetic material tents from Canada..."download , fill in and send off the Border Force Customs Duty and/or import VAT relating to imports by post".form. Other people apparently have got a refund, it takes a couple of weeks for a credit.
What sort of wind do you think it's up to? Obviously a bit subjective. I've had the two person just over three months. I had to bail one night because the wind was stronger than stated on the forecast and I was still learning how to use it. I had it all the guy out points used but the line locks on one of the corners kept slipping. Not sure if I'd pulled the line lock in the wrong direction somehow. I think it was my second time out in it. Since then I use all the tie out points and guy lines. I've not had a problem since in probably 5-6 nights but I've also not had the same strength winds.

Bit harsh that tony lad!! Never used the word imbeciles just referred to some mentioning struggles with how the inner mesh door is positioned to how the vestibule is positioned.. Certainly wouldnt say its awful & imo one of the best shelters ive owned..each to their own though & you wont wont find me bad mouthing shelters just because i didnt get on with it..

@@AndrewBeavers Yes I guess a Cuben fiber tent should be almost light when wet. Would be interesting to weigh it dry and wet. To some degree the same story for polyester. Although, water may stick more onto the fabric, more than onto Cuben. Nylon of course does absorb water. So it is possible that overall a same model tent weighs actually less in polyester than nylon in real life when 60%, 80% of the time you pack it wet? Until you have a noon break and let the tent dry in the full Sun. Which even with my small Lanshan 1 can take an hour shaking it, turn the inside out. Then there is the question if wiping off the condensation of a single wall tent isn't heavier than a double wall tent? You have to carry that wet cotton towel with you too!

If I had the sheckles, I'd probably own the 2 person Xmid but currently happy with my Lambshank 2 - 3 season.

Great video andy I’m gonna steal the shock cord idea. I seen a video where the idea was to hang your pack off your trekking pole using a carabiner.
I saw that one too...I thought maybe it's a lot of added weight on the pole, the main structural point, for not much benefit.

I think the Universe wants me to buy one of these because tonight Durston sent me an email saying that they are back in stock and now this 🤔 BUT i also received an email from Big Sky Bob saying that the UK warehouse have stocked up and reopened but i am taking that with a pinch of salt after last months fiasco they dealt me when i thought i had bought a Chinook 1p only to be forced to wait a full month just to get my money back, never again. Always been a belt and braces hilleberg guy and recently bought a vern 1 for this winter.
But as a lightwieght fair weather late spring to early autumn shelter option I am interested in this shelter(including long distance hikes during this time period)ATB👍
@@TomSerty To be honest I prefer a tent with a solid inner, even during summer. For me when doing summit camps I feel the cold with the slightest breeze even with a decent sleeping bag. Unless it is really scorchio which is few and far between in my neck of the woods. But maybe just getting old :) Price is another factor as spent too much over the years on gear as it is.

@@RS.Outdoors I agree with Ray . The single skin tents are not for me the problem. But the mesh is for me the problem and bring a lot of cold inside of the tent. So for me always a solid inner. For example the tarp tent stratosphere with the solid inner tent.

i plan to do a winter camp in it yes..wont be the manky wet windy ones lol..but rather a snowy frosty clear blue sky one if we get one lol..
What did you pay for it, including import tax etc (assuming you ordered direct)? They sell them at Valley and Peak now for £690 so just wondering which was is cheapest
The import tax and VAT for me was £63. You can claim the £22 customs tax element back due to a UK/Canada trade agreement ; Commodity 6306220000 rule for synthetic material tents from Canada..."download , fill in and send off the Border Force Customs Duty and/or import VAT relating to imports by post".form. Other people apparently have got a refund, it takes a couple of weeks for a credit.

What sort of wind do you think it's up to?
Obviously a bit subjective. I've had the two person just over three months. I had to bail one night because the wind was stronger than stated on the forecast and I was still learning how to use it. I had it all the guy out points used but the line locks on one of the corners kept slipping. Not sure if I'd pulled the line lock in the wrong direction somehow. I think it was my second time out in it. Since then I use all the tie out points and guy lines. I've not had a problem since in probably 5-6 nights but I've also not had the same strength winds.
ive seen 30mph gusts in it twice & performed great but tbh now days i wouldnt want to be out in much worse..im out for the enjoyment these days not to endure it.

what are the time of year you're going to use the xmid andy? will you be taking it into winter/wind. ive got the xmid pro2 - ive cut the inner out making it a tarp, i want it all yr, but the wind performance side is throwing me
used it a few times where its hit 30 mph gusts & it was fine..i want to try it over winter maybe a snow camp just to see how it fairs.

Bit harsh that tony lad!! Never used the word imbeciles just referred to some mentioning struggles with how the inner mesh door is positioned to how the vestibule is positioned..
Certainly wouldnt say its awful & imo one of the best shelters ive owned..each to their own though & you wont wont find me bad mouthing shelters just because i didnt get on with it..

What does it weigh when wet? What does the non pro version weigh when wet? You hardly ever pack your tent dry in the morning.
in theory the pro shouldnt weigh any more as dcf doesnt absorb water..and tbf i pack my tent away quite a lot dry.
@@AndrewBeavers Yes I guess a Cuben fiber tent should be almost light when wet. Would be interesting to weigh it dry and wet.
To some degree the same story for polyester. Although, water may stick more onto the fabric, more than onto Cuben. Nylon of course does absorb water.
So it is possible that overall a same model tent weighs actually less in polyester than nylon in real life when 60%, 80% of the time you pack it wet?
Until you have a noon break and let the tent dry in the full Sun. Which even with my small Lanshan 1 can take an hour shaking it, turn the inside out.
Then there is the question if wiping off the condensation of a single wall tent isn't heavier than a double wall tent? You have to carry that wet cotton towel with you too!
