I watched the entire vods of Connor playing Final Fantasy 7 and must say, it was amazing. At the beginning I was worried he was going to skip key parts of the game. But he leveled the party to almost max. He got Vincent and Yuffie. He even took down Ruby and Emerald Weapon as well. 10/10 stream. As a FF7 veteran I was more than entertained.
Yeah I laughed when he said he didn't have to grind, but he really didn't. He CHOSE to grind. Cuz he was compelled to achieve something. It's a very different thing. Never expected him to go as hard as he did. Although to be fair, without the fast forward and disable random battle functions he wouldn't have. Which is fine, everyone would if everyone had been able.

Never thought I’d see the day where Connor plays games not just for the gameplay, but for the story and him not skipping cut scenes. That was some major character development we got from Connor this year. I relate with Garnt on the fidgets toys. For me I tend to fiddle with pens. I like the clicky sound it makes

The FF 7 Remake / rebirth story, without spoiling too much, is beginning to branch out a separate story line. So highly recommend OG first if you wanna appreciate it. If not, just go through the remake trilogy all the way Connor, the remake music actually blew it out of the park. They deservedly won music of the year
I mean, you just need to check out that the remake basically expands the Midgar part of the original into a full game to know that the remake has to have its own completely seperate story. The end of FFVII Remake just makes it clear that anything is possible now. Characters that died might not die, events that are critical to the OG story may not happen. Characters that weren't even created when the OG released, might be introduced, not to mention of entirely new characters that might play a bigger role. It's basically the same thing when Garnt said thhat he doesn't want to watch the Scott Pilgrim anime because he knows the story, even though the story of the anime and even the original comic are completely different

Don't get baited into ichinose (the family amnesia one). The first chapter is AMAZING 10/10. And from there, it just gets worse and worse. The writing gets absolutely garbage. Wastes the concept completely.

It was a mix of hearing Garnt talk about getting into Trails series and it being on sale recently that helped me make the plunge and wow, I'm so glad that I did.
I'm so hyped to hear the boys talking about City Pop! I became a huge fan when i discovered it a couple months ago coming out of a rough patch of the year. It instantly boosted my quality of life just playing it in the background, its hard to be sad when Anri bangs so hard but its so relatable cos the lyrics are like "I can't stop the loneliness" 😂 No one around me really gets it but that part of the pod really scratched a deep itch👌🏾
Garnt as someone who tried Trails twice and couldn't get into it, last year I finally sat down and literally played all 11 games in 4 months of college break, it is the greatest masterpiece that has ever been bestowed onto the world. Kuro 1 and Kuro 2 just gets better and better. Although those 4 months I don't think I saw any friends, the plot was worth it.
I started the series a month ago, I am in Trails SC Chapter 3 so far, the first one was surprisingly not boring for me even if it was kinda basic storywise and while I don't find the gameplay that enjoyable is not boring either, for someone who pretty much never played a JRPG it was surprisingly easy to get into it.

Dang, feels bittersweet hearing Garnt talk about The Ichinose Family's Deadly Sin. Those first few chapters were so strong and worthy of being praised, but everything in the second half was so messy and unnecessarily convoluted. What a shame. This has been a good year. I went on a trek with my wife to the Himalayas, March end. 3 days after coming back my wife told me she was pregnant. In May I bought a house. Dec 9th my little girl was born. Today's is my dog, Yuki's birthday.🎉 I'm in so much bank loan now, and filled with expenses, and we both are pretty sleep deprived, but I still hope time freezes in these moments.
54:30 people are sick of topical politics. Not just politics in general. Also yes a lot of media is political but it also manages to stay impartial. You don't always feel like a righteous hero in Final Fantasy. Like when you have to basically turn of the poor peoples sun to open a door. Without arguing if Barbie is right or not I think we can all agree that it wasn't very nuanced.

I was young and didn't speak any English whatsoever when I played Pokémon Red for the first time. I somehow skipped getting Flash and went into that one dark cave like that. Took hours, but was able to get out of there. And I did that at least a couple times more as I went through the game throughout the years. You can imagine my frustration years later when I learned about Flash. It made a lot of sense, tho
One thing I will say about the original FF7 by playing it first then playing the Remake is that it gives you a completely different perspective on the story. I played the original FF7 in late 2022. Then I played the Remake for the first time this year. And Im glad I played it that way. Because the Remake is VERY different from the original but also the new-er story is fed by the original game. It’s difficult to explain it without spoiling anything. But it’s one of those things where you just have to do it to get it. Because it’s the greatest feeling ever. And Im glad Connor will get to experience that one day!
I'm quite disappointed with the Remake, it felt so watered down with the side quests and the final fight being forced.. it made me not look forward to the Remake2. It gives me a similar feeling to The Hobbit films.. but saying that, I'm glad that it makes people reach out for the original If Connor plays IX I will have to watch the stream, as I've tried to get into that game twice but I just can't stay engaged.. It's one I feel hasn't aged that well if you haven't grown up with.

I think the creators tried to make Remake so players could explore the world more and interact with characters even more. And Rebirth will be the same, especially since its more open world
As someone who got into the Trails series in 2022 and just caught up to the officially released titles, I am so glad he is enjoying it, and I also agree that trails the 3rd is a hugely underrated game and absolutely not skippable if you actually like the series.
Garnt's description of the kind of horror he loves reminds me of what made me fall in love with the horror storytelling in the Higurashi VN - where you just get thrown into the headspace of the main character, as he experiences that something doesn't feel right and you just have to work off of this eerie feeling for hours and hours, reading about all the things that happen within this confusing world, fueled by the way Ryukishi uses music and sound effects to enhance the atmosphere, until you reach the part of the story where it starts to answer all the questions and it all comes together
Thank GOD! I remember him tweeting out beating Sky FC and thinking he'd never move on. As someone who played from Sky FC thru Kuro 1 in release order over the last 2 years, I couldn't be happier!

Ma Boi Garnt Finally Updating us on Trails !!! i also started the journey this year, currently playing Trails to Azure, such a GOATED Series. (3rd is also my favourite so far)
Trails baby!!! Trails in the Sky the 3rd is one of my 2 favorite Trails games (along with Azure). It structure is way more direct than the previous ones, making it less tedious IMH. Also, the way it's built with the lore through short stories, parts about the character and parts just about lore, is told in various of creative ways and is done brilliantly. Falcom really are great storytellers when they allow themselves to think outside the box, and Trails in the Sky the 3rd is where they shine brilliantly.
I saw them in Washington D.C. in 2019. I was like the only person in the crowd there who also a fan of the opener, Avatar who I didn't know was opening for them so that was a fun bonus.
They were kinda wrong about One Piece not having real life allegories to political events irl. Fisher Tiger for example is very obviously inspired by Malcom X and his early philosophies, and Otohime has ideology that is close to MLK Jr. The entire lore of the racism towards fishmen is also extremely close to and obviously inspired by the irl experience of black people in America.
It's me. I'm the FF9 fan haha. I love FF7 and FF10 as well, but there's something about 9 that I just love. I think it's that it's a *little* less edgy than some of its contemporaries. I love the medival setting, the slightly more whimsical setting, the characters, everything. Joey is right though that 10 is really the next leap forward. 9 is kind of like 6, in that it was sort of the end of an era of FF, and so it often gets a little shafted/overshadowed by the one that started the next era. I used to say 7 was my favorite, but with time and maturity, I like 9 more now as an adult. I'm SO glad that Connor enjoyed 7 so much though. Some of it is rough around the edges, especially the graphics, but it reall was something special. To Garnt, I think the Eva comparison is VERY apt from what I understand, though I haven't watched the rebuilds. Without spoiling things, FF7R is absolutely an alternate story that changes things. We obviously don't know exactly what will happen in the next two, but there was already a MASSIVE change at the ending of part 1, all bets are off. To the point that some fans of FF7 are worried about the directions it COULD go because it's clearly going to be different in some major ways.
The thing about FFIX that a lot of people underestimate imo is that it is less edgy, yes, but it's arguably the darkest game of the mainline series together with FFVI and FFX. Also it has one of the best skill systems of the mainline games. I would say the Job system and the Materia system are better, but the Ability system is really really good, it's just not balanced well, since some abilities are just too strong.
I was anxious getting into the video with that thumbnail - FFVII is my favorite game of all time and way too close to my heart. I was bracing for some takes but finding Connor loving it made me smile ear to ear. As he says, played it when I was 7 and yeah it did shaped a lot of my personality, haha
I also played the Trails series this year. Currently playing Trails from Zero rn. Meeting Estelle and Joshua was a surprise for me. Overall, its a great game. Can't wait to play the Cold steel
Having not played the ff7 remake yet but knowing the "twist" (I'm someone who seeks out spoilers), I think Garnt (or anyone) should probably play the original first, so he understands what changes are being made and their significance. I think Garnt's talked about the Scott Pilgrim anime? And I this (from what I understand) is in a similar vein, where it subverts expectations based on your preexisting knowledge of the material.
He isn't. He is talking about auto battling in rpgs. Autobattlers are strategy games about how you assemble your team, your economy and the placements of your units. Autobattling is a lazy way for devs to make shit games and still get losers to "play" them.
The boy and the heron does seem like the most connor-like studio ghibli movie. I watched the movie, and I think the best reaction can anyone can give is just having a lot of thoughts about it, good and bad. I love the conversations I've had with people about it where no one loved or hated all of it but just having a lot to say. Honestly, it really seemed like Miyazaki didn't give a crap who watched this, he just wanted to give his thoughts about different themes out, and we just have to submit to it and discuss amongst ourselves. I personally didn't get all of it but had a lot of fun. I feel like I need a Breadsword essay about it so I can have all the context lol.
I honestly found The Boy and the Heron forgettable and nonsensical. Me and a couple of friends went to see this on my birthday and we were really looking forward to it. Especially after looking at the cast list. We went to a fairly packed theater and I kid you not, there was complete silence in the auditorium. All I can recall was the murmuring of people expressing how disappointing the film was.
@galaxy_kitten95 I think that's valid. I also went to see it on my birthday and got a little deflated after. Definitely disappointed my expectations to have a fun, Howl-like adventure. And the thing with the mother/ aunt is WILD. That and just a million other things I can critique about it. But I find myself critiquing it in a really fun, dissective way that I usually don't do with other films. If for anything else, this movie was great for me to just digest and think about. 😅

A PSA regarding FFVII, since a lot of people were asking on Connor's streams. Yes, all the praise he gives in this video is very valid. Game aged like wine, gameplay and customization is easy to get understand and complex to explore thanks to the Materia system. There are some missable and optionals, but don't be ashamed to look them up, expecially the optional characters. They don't spoil much at all. *AVOID SPOILERS LIKE THE PLAGUE* The story can get convoluted but like Joey said, it aged beautifully and is still relevant to this day. Don't mind the extended universe (Compilation) convolution as much. You can get into it at your own pace later. Concering Remake and Rebirth 2 months from now, yes, you can play Remake and still enjoy the same story as the original, but the Remake line changes some story aspects as Joey remarked. The story is and probably will still be the same as the original, *but there are additional points that weight more for those that have played the original first.* You won't really lose anything per se, (bear in mind, this could change with the release of the next games in the Remake line) but from someone who has VII as his favorite game of all time, if you can afford it. play the original before Remake. You'll thank me later. The order of playing/watching through FFVII is: Final Fantasy VII (1997)> Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete> Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII> Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Prequel, can be played immediately after VII if you wish> Final Fantasy VII Remake> Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. There is additional reading material and short single episode adaptions of Crisis Core (Last Order: Final Fantasy VII) and On the Way to a Smile [EPISODE DENZEL] which takes place between the original game and Advent Children, but is best enjoyed after both. And at last, have fun in Gaia!

The FF 7 Remake / rebirth story, without spoiling too much, is beginning to branch out a separate story line. So highly recommend OG first if you wanna appreciate it. If not, just go through the remake trilogy all the way

I mean, you just need to check out that the remake basically expands the Midgar part of the original into a full game to know that the remake has to have its own completely seperate story.
The end of FFVII Remake just makes it clear that anything is possible now. Characters that died might not die, events that are critical to the OG story may not happen. Characters that weren't even created when the OG released, might be introduced, not to mention of entirely new characters that might play a bigger role.
It's basically the same thing when Garnt said thhat he doesn't want to watch the Scott Pilgrim anime because he knows the story, even though the story of the anime and even the original comic are completely different

I'm so hyped to hear the boys talking about City Pop! I became a huge fan when i discovered it a couple months ago coming out of a rough patch of the year. It instantly boosted my quality of life just playing it in the background, its hard to be sad when Anri bangs so hard but its so relatable cos the lyrics are like "I can't stop the loneliness" 😂 No one around me really gets it but that part of the pod really scratched a deep itch👌🏾

Garnt as someone who tried Trails twice and couldn't get into it, last year I finally sat down and literally played all 11 games in 4 months of college break, it is the greatest masterpiece that has ever been bestowed onto the world. Kuro 1 and Kuro 2 just gets better and better. Although those 4 months I don't think I saw any friends, the plot was worth it.

I started the series a month ago, I am in Trails SC Chapter 3 so far, the first one was surprisingly not boring for me even if it was kinda basic storywise and while I don't find the gameplay that enjoyable is not boring either, for someone who pretty much never played a JRPG it was surprisingly easy to get into it.
Garnt is gonna shit himself while playing Azure. Zero is good, but once Azure hits, he's definitely going to start binge playing the series.

I was young and didn't speak any English whatsoever when I played Pokémon Red for the first time.
I somehow skipped getting Flash and went into that one dark cave like that. Took hours, but was able to get out of there. And I did that at least a couple times more as I went through the game throughout the years.
You can imagine my frustration years later when I learned about Flash. It made a lot of sense, tho

One thing I will say about the original FF7 by playing it first then playing the Remake is that it gives you a completely different perspective on the story.
I played the original FF7 in late 2022. Then I played the Remake for the first time this year. And Im glad I played it that way. Because the Remake is VERY different from the original but also the new-er story is fed by the original game.
It’s difficult to explain it without spoiling anything. But it’s one of those things where you just have to do it to get it. Because it’s the greatest feeling ever. And Im glad Connor will get to experience that one day!

I'm quite disappointed with the Remake, it felt so watered down with the side quests and the final fight being forced.. it made me not look forward to the Remake2. It gives me a similar feeling to The Hobbit films.. but saying that, I'm glad that it makes people reach out for the original
If Connor plays IX I will have to watch the stream, as I've tried to get into that game twice but I just can't stay engaged.. It's one I feel hasn't aged that well if you haven't grown up with.

As someone who got into the Trails series in 2022 and just caught up to the officially released titles, I am so glad he is enjoying it, and I also agree that trails the 3rd is a hugely underrated game and absolutely not skippable if you actually like the series.
The Trails series is the One Piece of JRPGs. Slow burn world building that isn’t for everybody but when it hits, it hits like a freight train.
Garnt's description of the kind of horror he loves reminds me of what made me fall in love with the horror storytelling in the Higurashi VN - where you just get thrown into the headspace of the main character, as he experiences that something doesn't feel right and you just have to work off of this eerie feeling for hours and hours, reading about all the things that happen within this confusing world, fueled by the way Ryukishi uses music and sound effects to enhance the atmosphere, until you reach the part of the story where it starts to answer all the questions and it all comes together
R07 is based and the VN is a vastly underutilised medium.

Trails in the Sky the 3rd is one of my 2 favorite Trails games (along with Azure). It structure is way more direct than the previous ones, making it less tedious IMH. Also, the way it's built with the lore through short stories, parts about the character and parts just about lore, is told in various of creative ways and is done brilliantly. Falcom really are great storytellers when they allow themselves to think outside the box, and Trails in the Sky the 3rd is where they shine brilliantly.
I'm waiting with immense anticipation for Garnt's inevitable Trails video, guess it might be a while if he waits to catch all the way up first though.

They were kinda wrong about One Piece not having real life allegories to political events irl.
Fisher Tiger for example is very obviously inspired by Malcom X and his early philosophies, and Otohime has ideology that is close to MLK Jr. The entire lore of the racism towards fishmen is also extremely close to and obviously inspired by the irl experience of black people in America.
Love the Trails series. Hope Garnt spreads the word frequently.
It's me. I'm the FF9 fan haha. I love FF7 and FF10 as well, but there's something about 9 that I just love. I think it's that it's a *little* less edgy than some of its contemporaries. I love the medival setting, the slightly more whimsical setting, the characters, everything. Joey is right though that 10 is really the next leap forward. 9 is kind of like 6, in that it was sort of the end of an era of FF, and so it often gets a little shafted/overshadowed by the one that started the next era. I used to say 7 was my favorite, but with time and maturity, I like 9 more now as an adult.
I'm SO glad that Connor enjoyed 7 so much though. Some of it is rough around the edges, especially the graphics, but it reall was something special. To Garnt, I think the Eva comparison is VERY apt from what I understand, though I haven't watched the rebuilds. Without spoiling things, FF7R is absolutely an alternate story that changes things. We obviously don't know exactly what will happen in the next two, but there was already a MASSIVE change at the ending of part 1, all bets are off. To the point that some fans of FF7 are worried about the directions it COULD go because it's clearly going to be different in some major ways.
The thing about FFIX that a lot of people underestimate imo is that it is less edgy, yes, but it's arguably the darkest game of the mainline series together with FFVI and FFX.
Also it has one of the best skill systems of the mainline games. I would say the Job system and the Materia system are better, but the Ability system is really really good, it's just not balanced well, since some abilities are just too strong.
I was anxious getting into the video with that thumbnail - FFVII is my favorite game of all time and way too close to my heart. I was bracing for some takes but finding Connor loving it made me smile ear to ear.
As he says, played it when I was 7 and yeah it did shaped a lot of my personality, haha
But Connor hasn't played modes like Sim universe or Swarm and stuff, Star Rail has so many different gamemodes.

Having not played the ff7 remake yet but knowing the "twist" (I'm someone who seeks out spoilers), I think Garnt (or anyone) should probably play the original first, so he understands what changes are being made and their significance.

The boy and the heron does seem like the most connor-like studio ghibli movie. I watched the movie, and I think the best reaction can anyone can give is just having a lot of thoughts about it, good and bad. I love the conversations I've had with people about it where no one loved or hated all of it but just having a lot to say. Honestly, it really seemed like Miyazaki didn't give a crap who watched this, he just wanted to give his thoughts about different themes out, and we just have to submit to it and discuss amongst ourselves.
I personally didn't get all of it but had a lot of fun. I feel like I need a Breadsword essay about it so I can have all the context lol.
I honestly found The Boy and the Heron forgettable and nonsensical.
Me and a couple of friends went to see this on my birthday and we were really looking forward to it. Especially after looking at the cast list. We went to a fairly packed theater and I kid you not, there was complete silence in the auditorium. All I can recall was the murmuring of people expressing how disappointing the film was.
@galaxy_kitten95 I think that's valid. I also went to see it on my birthday and got a little deflated after. Definitely disappointed my expectations to have a fun, Howl-like adventure. And the thing with the mother/ aunt is WILD. That and just a million other things I can critique about it. But I find myself critiquing it in a really fun, dissective way that I usually don't do with other films. If for anything else, this movie was great for me to just digest and think about. 😅

A PSA regarding FFVII, since a lot of people were asking on Connor's streams. Yes, all the praise he gives in this video is very valid. Game aged like wine, gameplay and customization is easy to get understand and complex to explore thanks to the Materia system. There are some missable and optionals, but don't be ashamed to look them up, expecially the optional characters. They don't spoil much at all. *AVOID SPOILERS LIKE THE PLAGUE* The story can get convoluted but like Joey said, it aged beautifully and is still relevant to this day. Don't mind the extended universe (Compilation) convolution as much. You can get into it at your own pace later.
Concering Remake and Rebirth 2 months from now, yes, you can play Remake and still enjoy the same story as the original, but the Remake line changes some story aspects as Joey remarked. The story is and probably will still be the same as the original, *but there are additional points that weight more for those that have played the original first.* You won't really lose anything per se, (bear in mind, this could change with the release of the next games in the Remake line) but from someone who has VII as his favorite game of all time, if you can afford it. play the original before Remake. You'll thank me later.
The order of playing/watching through FFVII is:
Final Fantasy VII (1997)> Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete> Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII> Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (Prequel, can be played immediately after VII if you wish> Final Fantasy VII Remake> Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth.
There is additional reading material and short single episode adaptions of Crisis Core (Last Order: Final Fantasy VII) and On the Way to a Smile [EPISODE DENZEL] which takes place between the original game and Advent Children, but is best enjoyed after both.
