In this video we will head out to the Khao San Road area of Bangkok to try and see if the famous tuktuk scam that used to take place here in the city still exists! We will visit several temples in this video and of course a suit shop where my driver will make a small commission for bringing me into their store! Omg that is so true, my first time in thailand 10 days vacation before the seenamie in 2005. I got a very bad experience. Tuk tuk told us will cost $3 for 3 passenger and i want to tour silk store, they took me to a jewelry warehouse were they greet me with cold drink at front door surround by lots of pretty hookers, It was dark with dim lighting jewelry show case and jewelry factory. Aggressively asking us if we want to buy jewelry. I end up buying a necklace $1850 reduce to $850. My tuk tuk ask me what I buy. I found out he gets a cut of certain % from the jewelry factory. I told him I want to buy silk material not jewelry. He drop us off at this small building ( assuming this place is the silk store)and he want $30 not $3. I guess we may misunderstand him the price. I paid him $30. That day was Hot, tired and feel dizzy as we enter the silk store greeting by 2 beautiful girls dress in silk outfit. Shockingly we found ourselves woke up at some old building alley. They clean us out and dump us at some quiet scary alley. All of our purse and jewelry are gone. It was a tuk tuk team work scam. They drug us since the jewelry factory store, from those pretty girls greeting us with those cold drink.

Thanks Chris for the video. Reminded me of my trips to Delhi and Mumbai using the Tuk Tuk (and way more traffic). I will be making my first three day trip into Bangkok in a few weeks as I jump around several neighboring countries. Thank you for your military service, Airborne. I do not have any tattoos ( in my early 60's) however, if I do add some ink I need the to get similar designs to add my eighty deuce and 1st SF connection. Chris, I was born in Thailand been living in the US since I was a boy, I watch a lot of TH-camrs in Thailand. There are a lot of TH-camrs that pretend to know about the custom and culture of Thailand.
You are different, I can tell by your interactions that you genuinely respect and appreciate Thai culture. You’re one of the few. In Thai there’s a phrase that encompasses you, jai dee, maybe you’ve been called this, it means kindness, compassion, hospitality, humanity.
How did you migrate to the US?

@@ottmiller4028 I have met many Thai woman here married US soldiers. My ancestors are from Surin but moved to lived in Cambodia in the 1900s and when the Khmer rouge took over we migrated back to Thailand and now the US. Quite a complex history

@@ottmiller4028 Hell no. We shouldn't even left Thailand to Cambodia in the first place. The Khmer rouge could have wiped out our whole family but luckily most of my relatives survived and now we are living in USA, Australia, Canada, and Thailand.

Aha!! The suit shop. Hi. Patty and Enrique here. Thank you for your videos. I wish we saw them before our trip to Bangkok! Our driver took us there on our temple day. While we skipped the three custom dresses for me and three suits for my husband, my husband did buy a custom suit with pants, coat, blazer, shirts, and ties. The sales spiel was three dresses and three suits for so many baht. But, we decided to try just one suit. The original price was a bit much, but some negotiation made it rather comparable to custom tailors in our home area here in Chicago. We were not expecting to stop there. We were actually a bit upset initially as we wanted to get around to the temples and it reduced our trust in our hotel driver. I told the very pushy sales guys that I needed to think about it. Then, compared prices for dresses. Also, I noticed they seemed to be more proficient in men's suits. Details matter. They did size my husband decently (I worked menswear part time during college) and the fabric and tailored fit was good. They delivered to our hotel before we left, so we were able to check it out while there. It ended up being a good experience. My husband wore his suit to a company event when we returned home and felt good in his suit. Be sure to compare prices, check the fabric, and verify the stitches on whatever they tailor for you. I do wish the hotel driver had asked us before just stopping there though.
As a Thai people. It's really ashame to see this. I know it's true. There is a bad and good people here. I'm sorry for tourists who met a scammer but i recommend you should avoid Tuk Tuk and Taxi. You better to use bus, taxi boat which is i never see you use it Thai people always use it i highly recommend or BTS sky train or MRT subway or monorail instead. there are many option for you to choose it cheaper and faster and safer you should recommend this in your chanel.
The canal boats are an awesome way to travel especially during peak hours on the roads.

Good to share this for others. In my experience, scammers try so hard; like so friendly, trying to offer things, trying to be nice and make friend to you. some even more aggressive etc.

Same thing happened to me in chaing mai, they drop you off at these shops and if you buy something I guess they get a cut, one sovereign shop tried to sell me a custom made rug from India that cost 35k to 200k thai baht that was absolutely ridiculous price. Another funny thing my driver said the same thing to me when I told him I was from America, Obama 😅

I fell for this the first time I went to Bangkok.. they told me the palace was closed so they took me on a tour and of course took me to buy suits and jewelry… 😂

I chose to go on the floating market tour to see what it was all about. It might be called a scam, but I found the things I got to see very interesting. I called it the tour of despair. It was one of my more memorable tours.
Nice video... in changmai I got tuktuk for 80 bath. A lot but the most of the time it was standaard 150 bath
I don't understand how those places can charge for going into a religious temple. that's pretty much like going into a church here in the US, and finding out they're charging an entrance fee. You should talk to someone in customs, the embassy, or just someone you can trust, and ask them and find out about all of the places that are charging fee's like the temple and see if they're on the up and up. Find out what places are actually suppose to be free, and which ones have been scamming people this whole time. I do know from watching other video's that most of the places that say are doctor's office's, are actually a total scam and could actually get you sick or worse from what they give you.

We actually had tuk tuk ride around temples in BKK from khao san road for 10baht , but it was national temple day or something like that , tuk tuk drivers had free gasoline on that day of what i understood

Did this with my friend and paid 70 baht I believe for multiple temples, had to persist with the suit guys but we also scored a free beer for the road. A fun adventure despite being a bit sketchy

I used to take a tuk tuk from Sutthisan to Taopoon back in '90. The fare was 60 - 70 baht then.

This just happened to me.. first time Bangkok.. got off the train for the lying buddah.. they told me it was closed.. took me to a temple then the suit places.. again the guy was honest and told me stay 10 mins he gets commission.. but i only paid 60 baht and he took me to 3 or 4 temples.. i told the suit guy.. im from New York this whole suit thing seems sketch

I never rode a Tuk Tuk in Bangkok, since a Tuk Tuk is for a group of 2 or 3 people. Instead I got a daypass to ride the BTS Skytrain. There a many stations to stop and look around.

We came in June 2023, friend was having laszer eye surgery we had a morning to kill, tuck tuck offer3d us a ride for 40 so we went , he took us to a suit shop, we got out after 20 mins told the tuk tuk driver we bought shirts (didn’t) then we got took to a massage place was 900 a hour each both had one then we said we had to meet a friend in a pub and got away lol , it was stressful but fun , I’d never do that again lol
