  • When you think of Vegas, you think of the strip - gambling, partying, and vices. It's Sin City, after all. But living in Vegas is something entirely different, and here's why it's one of the best places to live in the U.S.

Having been raised in Vegas all my life, I grew up hating it because of the heat and its poor education system.

Totally agree with most of what you said! I lived in Vegas for 4 years and it was amazing for about 3/4 of that time. There really is so much to do off the strip that people should take advantage of more. It's still a very landlocked city so if you like easy access to cities, beach, etc., Vegas wouldn't be for you.

I’ve been preaching this since 2016… being a Chicago transplant who moved here in 2017, is CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED. It’s more beneficially to come here with big dreams too because you can be a shark in a small pond vs. a fish among fish in a large pond.

Yessss!!!! I taught and lived in Vegas for six years and miss it still. Life abroad is superior for me for now, but it has soooo many advantages and was sooo much more affordable and enjoyable versus other big cities I lived in, including less “flashy” cities like Jacksonville. I was placed there via Teach for America and am so glad I was. I still miss my beautiful condo-style apartment in the mountains, which was way cheaper than crappier places elsewhere.

We just love for all the reasons you explained but also because the architecture of new homes is phenomenal. We cannot find modern homes with such style in the east coast, unless you are able to spend $20 million to build in Miami. Cool video doc. Thanks for the info.

I used to live in Las Vegas before the 2007-2008 market crashed. It was nice sometimes but it was still a desert 🏜 and got pretty dead after 2008 and became like a ghost town afterwards for awhile during the Great Recession. Living in Plano Tx now and I think it’s by far much better environment for a family and safety. Voted best place to live for a couple years for a reason.

I'm mixed on this one. Having lived in Vegas for much of my adult life (grew up elsewhere, but once I finished schooling I landed in Vegas which is where I live, work and am raising my kids). There are some cool things about Vegas (almost all of which do NOT involve the Strip) but the summers are unbearable. Dry heat? I've lived in south Texas and south Florida - both of which are very humid and that is so much more tolerable than 110-115 (dry heat) for several months. Vegas summers are misery. Also, raising kids. Clark County school district is...well, I just don't have words. We've had to put our kids in private schools and that costs at least as much as our mortgage (maybe more). I'm a sub-specialty physician and it is not physician friendly place. Low reimbursement (granted, not a problem exclusive to Vegas), very new/small GME programs so it's hard to practice in academics - leaving private practice as the most likely option and that is a fast-track to burn out. Red Rocks and Mt. Charleston are great, but once you've been there a few dozen times, it quits being exciting. All the parks in southern Utah are amazing and I'd move there in a nano-second if the area could support my career, but sadly that isn't realistic. Lake Mead is crowded and a ghost of its former self (fallout of an extended drought). Entertainment and food are great, I will give that one to Vegas. So, yeah, mixed feeling on this one.

Kevin! You lost me at "I was considering San Diego or staying in the bay area, something like Oakland." I know way too many people living in California that would sacrifice a limb to get out. If you view the conditions in urban California as desirable, I ponder the extent to which Las Vegas embodies the same problems :) And I'm not just talking trash on California! It was way better just 10-20 years ago. They have a infamous governing problem that is well known even among the locals. Perhaps things will improve after they recall Newsom. The only friends I have that live in California and love it are either gay/trans and living in SF or Hispanic and live within tight-nit Hispanic communities, and both of these groups express understanding about peoples' complaints. If you want to convince someone like me to move to Vegas, you'll have to show that it's not a grimy dump with astronomical crime rates like Detroit or St. Louis. As the alleged economic opportunities once unique to big cities are decentralized by the internet, it's going to be an uphill battle convincing the sane to live in a really expensive place where people are stacked on top of each other (Vegas may be cheap compared to Oakland, but it's definitely NOT cheap in absolute terms). Much love, Kevin! Thanks for the video!

@@MA-zg2pz Different strokes for different folks. I know more people moving away from California (including Bay Area) and some that express a desire to leave, but they can't justify it because e.g. their Facebook salary is too high. I always invoke the idea of "selling one's soul to the devil" and such sentiment has never been rebutted. I don't know anyone working for a big tech company that doesn't already plan on leaving. Hence why the average employee tenure at these companies is like 1.5-2 years. Don't believe the propaganda - everyone I know living and working in Silicon Valley indicate that it's pretty bad.

Vegas is a horrible city to live. I'm moving out of here to San Francisco, I dont care the cost of living here is cheap, to me theres more cons. Ladnscape is boring, I'm tired of rocks and boring looking brown houses. The city has no personality, lack of culture. I dont gamble and dont live the Vegas vibe, its not for me. Plus, summers are brutal, its just too much its hard to believe some people are actually ok with living in 115 degrees. I have tolerated for 5 years and I'm done. This place brings me lot of depression, hard to make friends because people here are rude and I feel no sense of community. Good luck to everyone moving here, I'm out.
