    Im almost 35 and was an alcoholic since 18. I have been alcohol free for 7 months and im picking up the pieces, but I have learnt that you don't have to be great in every social setting.. some people you just don't click with, which is perfectly fine. Having a blast being alcohol free like a new reality has been unlocked.

    I'm turning 25 this year, have the last three semesters of med school left (out of 6 years) and during the last year (probably covid gave me all the time for some thinking) I came to a lot of the same conclusions. Especially regarding politics - I spent quite a lot of time listening, learning, researching from pretty much every side. At first it was difficult - I was sure 'the other side" was insane. Now I think, a lot of the times, both are - as you said - extremes in politics are bad in general. I have my political views, I vote for what I believe to be the best option, but I stopped believing that if xyz won the world would become sunshine and rainbows all over. And I definitely would never consider parting ways with someone based solely on who they voted or didn't vote - I find that that's precisely politicians agenda as united society is much stronger.
    Same with money. Growing up my family always struggled financially, I still struggle as I combine part time job with med school and although I chose medicine because of how fascinated I was (and still am) with this field I value the fact that most probably will be comfortable financially a lot. But right now I see I'd be miserable if I gave the next years completely for work, no matter how rewarding, and I'm choosing speciality that I know would accomodate family life. 5 years ago I would never factor that in.

      This has nothing to do with what you said, and how moving it is, but how did you decide you wanted to go to medschool, how do you go through it, and hows the journey?

    • @Ineshiee
      @Ineshiee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ddeegz12 I live in Poland so it's a lot different than in the US, the proccess is much simpler. Here 'med school' is just medical university and you go there straight out of high school (usually the year you're turning 19). After middle school I knew I wanted to write extended biology and probably chemistry on my high school finals and I was lucky enough I got admitted to the 'best' class in my area for that. So, from the beginning of high school I kinda knew that I'd go to university for something related to medicine because I was fascinated about everything related to it. Right after high school graduation I didn't apply for medicine as a major, only pharmakology, medical analytics and chemical technology. I went to study medical analytics but I had my doubts not about the major itself but about the work prospects - basically I would hit my celling both financially and as far as responsibilites go pretty soon after graduation and I decided to try applying for medicine because I felt like i needed bigger challenge and more oportunities. I got accepted but kept an option to go back to medical analytics after a year if something went wrong. At that time I wasn't really sure how I'd react to direct contact with the patient - again, in Poland you don't need to (or can't really) do any doctor shadowing before med school so you have absolutely no experience in the hospital setting before you start your studies. I didn't know if I was suited for it mentally. That's why, if anyone lives in an area when it looks similar and is having doubts I'd advise doing everything you can to gain any form of practical experience as soon as possible. In Poland medicine is a 6 year 'course' and first two years are completely theoretical aside from summer practice, third year is a transition year but still mostly theoretical and years 4-6 are primarly practical. This means that some of my friends are only now realizing that they're not suited for hospital setting, can't deal with it mentally, are to repulsed by bodily fluids and so on but still continue because, well, the first years are so hard and cost you so much that giving up when you are closer to the diploma than the beginning is not an option. As for me... First year was hard, I didn't know what I was doing most of the time, I knew I was studying, and studying and studying but, like many, looking back I can see I made a lot of mistakes in my approach. I finished the year with mediocre results but no exam retakes so that was a plus. :) Second year, as far as studying's concerned was the hardest - I gave up pretty much everything for med school at that time. But it was also the year I started researching study methods and all the time optimalization tips. I went from crying in November that I'm gonna fail the year, drown in debt and so on to having the craziest summer parties celebrating my final results. Things I learnt that year come in handy in my everyday life - I think this year gave me adulting 101 course as a bonus. Third year was, to summarize, a little less extreme version of year two, but after it, during my summer practices came a moment that I got to know I really wanted to be a doctor. I got to admit patients - first time I was doing everything by myself and surprisingly, I didn't get nervous or awkward and that's when I realized I actually like contact with patients, get invested in their stories but also that every patient is a puzzle and no day is ever the same in medicine. Since then I've been trying to get as much practical experience as possible, which of course is difficult during a global pandemic. Clinical years in Poland are... not an ideal situation to learn much but that's another story. I wish I was a lot smarter and invested in my future at the beginning of high school so I could study somewhere else.
      Sorry for the way too long story. :)

    • @Ineshiee
      @Ineshiee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ddeegz12 Do everything you can to get to know how medical studies and being a doctor actually look like. Maybe reach out to people in the university in your area, get to know what problems do they face in their everyday life/practice. See if there isn't something that is an absolute no-go for you (again, in Poland money is a big issue - because of how underfunded health care is being a good doctor is really hard because you can loose your job by sending a patient for a procedure that is too expensive for example. Another thing not many people know that is a big problem in medicine are lawsuits which really don't look like you think they do). Also, really don't go study medicine for the money and/or prestige - there're much easier ways for that. Look for potential alternatives, write down pros and cons for every option. It's difficult in your teens, but think about how much time you want to spend at work in 10, 15 years (as I said, at 19 I thought I can work and work and work, but age and falling in love changed that and now I often talk with young doctors how they accomodate their private life and in which specialities and specific hospitals it's easier).
      While studying, really focus on consistency. There's a million study tips on youtube but don't try them all at once - of course, once we're at it Kevin and med school insiders (and ANKI flashcards) are life-savers. And really, pretty much everyone of my classmates had a period when it got all to intense, when life happened and med school gave no oportunity to slow down, when we got burned down. I made a mistake early on to think I'm inadeqaute, that everyone around me is better, smarter, mentally stronger but it's simply not true. It's about surviving those moments, pausing when necessary but also knowing when to push yourself. I personally like the '15 minutes' rule - if I think that studying that day is too much I tell myself to just do it for 15 minutes. In most cases, after that I keep going, but if every one of those minutes is agony then I take a nap/walk/whatever.

    I've always found the phrase "Just be yourself" to be a societal buzzword which can actually be a detriment. I want you to be your authentic self, as long as the authentic you doesn't suck the soul out of everyone you meet. If being yourself adds value to others, great! If not, you need to hold your tongue and work on yourself a little bit more.

    YASS about the alcohol! I say this time and time again but society is so strangely revolved around alcohol. I would argue it's even seen as a right of passage. If you don't drink you are seen as uptight, prude, sometimes immature. People will try to "convert" you or question your reasoning as if it wasn't sound. Oddly enough, it can be influenced into drinking it without even noticing. It truly blows my mind.

    The proble I have with centrism is that, while it sounds like the good and reasonable option, within politics, it usually ends up becoming a stand-in for zeitgeist apologists and societal stagnation. What I mean is that, the left might want +1, the right -1 and the centrists want to compromise with a 0. Moreover, the center is never really the true middle path but is dependent on what political group has more influence at the time or is more extreme. If we live in an extremely conservative society, with a very weak left, the “center” would still be conservative.
    In other words, I feel like centrists think they are the enlightened party when really they are the do-nothing disinterested party.

    Societal thing I have rejected: you dont need to watch movies or TV. I grew up without cable TV in the house, rarely watched movies, spent my time outside and hanging out with friends. This translated into never really having the proactive desire to watch any movies/TV. I have found that there a TON of things that everybody has seen, and will frequently quote movie lines and base their humor to some extent on the people around them having seen the same material as they have. To me that just feels like lazy humor and uncreative to just sit down and be fed a story. Moderation is key of course, movies can be super fun, and there is a lot that can be learned about life and people with film. People will VERY frequently say things like "omg who are you" or "you have a lot to catch up on" when they learned that I haven't seen "friends". But I've grown to not care at all. Now of course I've seen movies and TV shows before, but not NEARLY the amount that the average person has consumed. But also...I'm not going to catch up, I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing :D

In the US, our politics our skewed far to the right compared to most countries. I don't live in the US but elections in my country lately look a lot like elections in the US - there're two main parties/candidates and it's intense, never-ending war that splits society in half. I vote for what I consider 'the lesser evil' but I definitely wouldn't be crying happy tears when the party I voted would have won

    The answer in politics is not always in the center. Should slavery be illegal should not be answered with "sometimes".

We are much closer to the opposite extreme, and the center does not have the solutions to those questions.

      Being in the center politically doesn't mean being in the midddle of the line on every issue. I consider myself center leaning left and there's some things (like slavery) that are very obviously yes-no answers. Depending on specific things I can answer completely in line with one side or the other but yes, there're issues where the more I read and learn and the more I discover how many factors come into play the more my answer will stars with "it depends".
