    I started my investing journey with dividend investing for passive income. I think it's one of the best strategies to start investing to get comfortable with. First I want to show you the benefits of why dividend investing is extremely powerful and then I'll tell you why I quit dividend investing.
    Why dividend investing is the best:
    1. Between the years of 1930 to 2017 dividends made up about 42% of the total stock market return. And in a flat market, aka a stock market that just goes up and down but doesn’t really go anywhere - the dividend income strategy is where it shines the most because you’re actually getting paid. You are “realizing” your gains, you are actually making money, not just on paper like you would with growth stocks but there’s actually money going into your account every single month. That’s powerful because you can then reinvest that money back into the markets and increase your market share and actually do better than people invested in growth stocks in that flat market.
    2. Taxes. Dividends are incredible is because they are one of, it not the only investment that exists today where you can get paid without ever paying taxes on that income. It’s not a loophole, you don’t have to do any complicated accounting tricks, it’s the law. If you make between $0 to $40,400, you will pay nothing in taxes on qualified dividends if you file as forever alone. But if you’re married and you file together, you can make up to $80,800 a year in income and pay nothing. Just to blow your mind. That’s the same as filing jointly if you’re making $100,000 a year living in Los Angeles California - so that’s $20,000 you’re basically getting for free as a tax credit.
    3 . It turns out the 4% rule that we’re told we can live off of without ever running out of money, aka, if we invest 60% of our money into the S&P500 index aka the VOO stock, and the other 40% of that into bonds, we could live like that without ever running out of money but, we can actually increase that withdrawal rate to 5% instead of 4% if we invested in the top 100 highest paying dividend companies in the S&P500. Dividends can give you a higher standard of living by 1%.
    4. Better / more accurate retirement planning based on expenses vs passive income rather than selling off principe equity.
    5. The psychology. It's much easier to invest long term as a dividend investor with a better mindset.
    Reasons why I quit.
    1. When I started my TH-cam channel, I was making a lot less than $40,000 a year, so at that time, it made sense to focus on dividend investing because I wasn’t paying taxes on my qualified dividend income. Now I’m really fortunate to be making a lot more than $441,451 dollars a year - I’m now in the highest tax bracket where I will be paying 20% on my passive income.
    2. Growth / index fund investing gives a better overall return. I’ve searched decades of data to try to find some dividend index that beats a broad market index like VTI or VOO and I have found zero of them. They don’t exist. I looked at SPHD, SCHD, VIG, VYM, NOBL, all dividend focused ETFs but none of them - over a long period of time have historically beaten broad market funds.
    3. Goal is to FAT FIRE instead of just FIRE. This means my new goal is to make $100k passively in income per year.
    4. I’ll be buying more of VTI and VOO ETF stocks - which is the broad market index and the S&P500, they track almost identically in terms of how they perform, there’s almost no difference but I like VTI, the whole market because it incorporated companies like Tesla earlier before the S&P500 did, and I like VOO because it’s almost the same but it gives me the benefit of tax loss harvesting where I can sell one and buy the other and it wouldn’t be considered a wash sale. I guess "I quit dividend investing" is a little dramatic, I’m no quitter - I’m just taking a detour while I'm earning a higher income.

    I see a lot of comments here that misunderstand. I didn't quit dividend investing (I'm still buying $100 a day of a dividend ETF, as well as a broad market one). I'm also reinvesting all my dividends which are on track to make a good income over the next 20 years - automagically. :)

      Most people don't have his tax problem from making over 445k a year, which puts him into the highest capital gains tax %. It's still an awesome strategy, he is just maxed out. A GREAT PROBLEM!!! But how does he expect to contribute to a ROTH IRA with that income? I thought the cap was MAGI of 140k? 🤔
      BTW. I've had a ROTH IRA for 10 years sitting with a stupid cash mutual fund until Andrei taught me what it is and how to use it. FML! I'm eternally grateful for what I've learned on this channel. 🙏

      What type of options trader? Options are a complex investment; you can make money in many ways, unlike dividends. I can make a seven percent gain from selling calls. I can use less money to invest in a company to capture more shares by using options. Just learn about options before you knock it, especially since you can use them in many ways.

      Morning Star says it this way
      “A recent study by Factset shows that dividend paying stocks outperform their non-paying counterparts by a dramatic amount. From 1991 through 2015, non-dividend paying stocks earned just +4.18% return per year while dividend paying stocks significantly outperformed with a +9.7% average annual return.”

    The truth is...he didn't "quit" dividend investing. He left $350k USD in his dividend payers. This tells us all that he still thinks it's wise and important. I do a mix of dividend payers ( ETF, split share funds, closed end funds and also growth index funds ), which I believe is the best of both worlds. You got the long term time in market with them both PLUS you also get the monthly dividends paid out on DRIP or cash. Which, in turn, gets re-invested into these funds and creates a massive snowball FIRE affect after 20+ years of being diligent and dedicated to growing the portfolio. Thanks Andrei! Great video as usual. Take care!

      But don’t you have to pay taxes kn the dividends if they’re not in a retirement account? Even if they are reinvested. I mean if you are past the single filing 40,000 income limit or the married joint file one. Imagine you are reinvesting 100,000 dollars worth of dividends in 20 years before you’re ready to retire. Now you have to pay like $20,000 in taxes, right?

    Funny, I just compared gains from my dividend portfolio since I started vs index investing last week and realized I would have done better with index investing. So I chose to sell my portfolio and put it in index funds. I’m too old to get enough money to make enough in dividends to live off anyway. Love dividend investing, but I started too late. Time to keep it simple for me.

    The hardest issue for most investors is stomaching a loss in their investments. And because the stock market can fluctuate, you will have losses occur frequently. You’ll have to steel yourself to handle these losses, or you’ll be apt to buy high and sell low during a panic.

    • @jefferiesuenukuterangihoka3749
      @jefferiesuenukuterangihoka3749 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As long as you diversify your portfolio, any single stock that you own shouldn’t have too much of an impact on your overall return. If it does, buying individual stocks might not be the right choice for you. Even index funds will fluctuate, so you can’t get rid of all of your risk, try how you might. With help, these are achievable. Levi Clemans, a pro IA oversees my trades. You can look him up.

      Jeremeys explanation is less about tax and more overall performance Because Growth value stocks that are bought at dollar cost averaged discounted prices that also have dividends allow both the huge performance when chosen well and dividend performance amd so what if you pay tax ? Pure Growth stocks require investment in speculating on future income and discounted value amd that apart from Tesla and Apple reversed crystal balling IS VERY COSLTY

    I really like this video because it also aligns with what I have been learning myself. In retrospect, it was inevitable. The way you invest is largely based on your age and how long you have been investing. As a beginner investor, growth stocks are a must! Especially because of the tax benefits. As you get closer to retirement you can then gradually transition those stocks into dividend stock so that you can start living of the income. You only pay tax on the growth stocks when you sell them, so you have control over how much you then transition over to dividend stocks. Don't go selling the whole thing at that point!

    • @justasimpleguy7211
      @justasimpleguy7211 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you pay capital gains when you cash them in. Would the cash minus capital gains be greater than the value of the dividend stocks had you been investing in dividend stocks all along?
      I don't think that's a smart strategy. What if the market tanks when you need to convert to dividend stocks?

    • @hansdatatrek234

    I love how he pimped dividends to grow his channel and now it’s all YOLO assets. I guess dividend investing doesn’t attract as many views so he needs to compete with Graham and MeetKevin.

      It's true, they'll make far more money from ad revenue talking about yolo meme stocks than they will investing their money in to a safe consistent asset...It's just a meta reversion to the mean. All content drifts towards the figures that favor the algos that drives them views. Dumb looking thumbnails, click bait titles, stupid face on the thumbnail, all of it drives the clicks, and that drives the content. Hard to find original content that sticks to its roots anymore.

      Yep, it's a trend for the English-speaking moneytubers: show a tried and sound method. Hype it to hell and grew an audience. After a while they see, that their active monkey - making is far greater than their passiv income, these ads are just kicking it... So they need always some new flashy to keep the attention. And so on.

    I do growth investing and dividend investing. Also have international stocks and funds, and some bond funds. Also lots of cash. The key is to have lots of different investment sources.

    I like the reasoning behind your decision. Most investors don’t think about the taxes on their gains and 20 years is plenty of time for those dividends to compound on their own

    Good video. The argument about stocks crashing and ruining retirement is moot though. The correct strategy is to restructure your portfolio as you get closer to retirement with either bonds or dividend stocks.
