Thank you very much, young man. I am recently retired and was looking for some kind of a hobby. This is perfect for me. You are incredibly talented. Thank you so much!
Thank you for making this video! I've always wanted to try making glass, but won't spend a lot of money on tools until I know it's something I want to stay with or not.
Hi, I am from Tunisia and I am so impressed about the stained glass.I am beginner and I would like to learn how to do. Thank you for the informations. I will send you my first one done. All Love from Tunisia.
Nice video, but I wouldn't recommend the carborundum stone to file the edges even without some sort of lubricant. It will create tiny cracks in the edges of the glass that could cause a run once you start soldering, not to mention that it makes it much harder to foil. A glass grinder, as you point out, starts at about $100, but is a necessary expense, IMO. Sometimes you can find a used one online. I picked up both of my grinders used for less than $50.
Good list. I found if you want to have a good experience pick the best you can afford. I ended up rebuying most items after working with glass for a while and regret not getting better stuff earlier. I don’t hardly ever use those breaking pliers and love both of the Toyo glass cutters. They make stained glass much more enjoyable along with a good grinder
Quoc Ta Like most things you start on a low budget but eventually realize what’s best for you. Also I think upgrading is part of the fun and something to look forward to! 😀
Hi. This video was extremely helpful. I just want to understand if for solder wire we just have to keep 60/40 as priority? Can you tell me a little about the thickness of the wire used? Or does the thickness not matter?
I have been admiring your videos and other beginner stained glass videos and I want to get into this art form. Thank you for this list it will be most useful to get me going.
Holy cow I’m so excited I found your channel! I was wanting to learn how to do this so I could do sacred geometry stained glass art in my RV that I’ll be living in full time and then I saw your newest videos after I subscribed!! Your whole channel looks really neat! Thanks for all the helpful advice! 💚🙏🏻
Good budget-friendly list. I am with Quoc Ta on buying the best you can afford if you already think you will get hooked. I have virtually replaced all the cheaper stuff I bought at the beginning as I found the better the cutter, cleaner the breaks. The only original item I am still using is the soldering iron I picked up at a big box hobby store for $25. I am going to replace it soon with a Hako iron. I have vastly expanded what I have now because it is such a great art form. I got hooked after the first project. If you are really unsure about stained glass then take Sarakit's advice and get the minimum. It is a chance you will have to take. 👍😁🉐
I agree Steve. I’ve replaced almost everything except my grinder, but I want to upgrade that too. I just switched to the Hako FX601-02 iron and it’s so nice. I wish I would have done it earlier since it makes every job go so much smoother.
This is the best video I've seen for someone who knows nothing about this hobby yet. Thank you say much!! I see your video is two years old now, do you have another budget friendly soldering iron you recommend now or is it still the same?
Wow, it is amazing how much the prices have shot up in just a year! Very informative video though, thanks so much for taking it right down to basics level and for your advice and honesty.
Unless you're soldering for a living there's very little reason to spend this much on a soldering iron. I've used a 5£ aliexpress one regularly for years and never needed anything better. The best one I've used is the pinecil which I've built from a kit for like 50 quid. I've used stations costing hundreds of pounds and the pinecil is still the one I like best.
I just discovered your channel, thank you for what you do! I couldn't find a good guide on how to start and mostly what to use. I've been doing little terrariums since years now, i started by buing the glass cutter, and i was just gluing the pieces with hot glue, it was not working well to say the least haha. Then i updated to silicone, kind of like aquariums could be made, and as I was diving deeper into it, i discovered people were using this fancy copper tape, and a solder... It was hard to find actual advice for noobs, but thanks to you I now know what is about. Thank you! and you make beautiful stuff too :)
Thank you for the video! collecting tools gradually.. could you tell what thickness the glass would be good? I was trying to cut a glass which is pretty thick, about 6mm... doen't seem to work..
This is a silly question, I always thought you needed a special kind of glass to make these. If I use glass from some old frame, how do I paint it? Thanks
Excellent video! Thank you so much for this information. I’ve been wanting to start stain glass after a few classes I had a couple years ago but my Health has prevented it. Hello Thanks all thoses recommandations ! I really would like to draw on my stained glass, did there is a machine who cost not a lot to "cook" the drawing ? Thank you :)
Awesome video! Thank you for making it. I want to make some window inserts for my house and plan to work mostly in lead came. Do you think I need to grinder? Also, where do recommend ordering glass if you can't find it locally :-( ?
Hey thanks! With lead came work I think you could get away with not using a grinder but depends how your pieces turn out. Less curves and straight cuts would be the way to go. We do sell some glass packs on our site at www.stainedglassdiy.com but I haven't bought glass online since I have a few local shops around. Maybe find a shop that's closest to you to save on shipping prices? Good luck with your project!
Love your classes do you have any on decorative soldering. I am doing prism angels with tear drop prisms and stained glass wings. I have been playing with metal stamps (gotta be quick ) wire and solder drops but I have seen some stuff on Pinterest that blows my mind. Thanks dtw
Hello! When i tried to order the Novacan Industries Old Masters Flux - 8 Oz (#. 0 1 Count - Green), the shipping on it was close to $50! Is there a next best thing?- thank you!
Really appreciate this video! It made a seemingly costly hobby super accessible. I just got some supplies for roughly $90 and I’m excited to start! I saw in one of your other beginner videos that you polished the artwork after it was done but didn’t mention polish here- is it necessary, or are there alternatives?
Hi! Wax is cheaper than polish and works well as a finish. I do like polish to shine the silver solder and also use polish for copper patina. But any regular car wax would do. Glad you got started!
@@StainedGlassDIY Awesome, thanks so much! And that's perfect, already have some wax on hand. This weekend I worked on a tile of just squares and rectangles, and I also made a little turtle! My solder lines are pretty rough, but it's really fun and I'm excited to keep going.
Yes you would need cutting oil (kerosene, baby oil, sewing machine oil all work too) at the blade wheel before scoring the glass. Thanks for mentioning!

The cheaper the iron the harder it will be for you to use to solder. You could have a harder time just because it might not melt the solder as evenly but you can try and see its limitations.
Hi! Thank you so much for all your help! Im glad I found you :) I wanted to ask you what you say at minute 0:39. Where can I get free glass? Thank you! Greetings from Chile
Thank you again for all the videos, i'm about to buy all of the stuff I need to start. I just have one concern, it's about safety. Do I need a mask while i'm soldering? I feel like there's a lot of chemical fumes going on while you work on that, and i'm not sure. I've seen people recomend wearing just a simple surgical mask, and maybe gloves, but i've also seen people doing everything without any of them, so idk, I might just use a mask as a precaution. what do you think?
I wear a mask when I solder bc I'm in a garage. If out in the open air then I might not. But for sure it's not good to breathe this stuff. You can also direct the fumes with a fan. The filter and mask and everything I use can be found on kit.co/stainedglassdiy

With the copper foil, you have to run a full bead on all foil on every edge of the glass. Preferences on how thick or round you want your bead to look but most prefer a full look.
I have a question. I have never done this before. You listed several glass options for practicing. You did not mention regular window glass. Is it not a usable product? I have a bunch of very old windows laying in my barn loft. Probably the old wavey type.

yes but could be difficult if you free hand it and your edges wouldn't come out as it would on a tabletop but it is possible
