    Got my third, 2 weeks ago. 1978, rough needs work. My favorite yellow 🏍️ 1975, 2nd is 1981 blue cafe style. My service recommendations start with carb rebuild, fork seals, brakes, tires. 50k, timing belt replacement, 100k head gaskets, 200k speedo, and tach repair. Ride it, or it will need repairs.

      No doubt they became bigger, heavier, more aerodynamic, but full of more tech that had to be hidden under the plastics. It definitely looks more sporty today, but i can absolutely appreciate the original look. Thanks for watching. I've reviewed the fifth gen as well

    I remember as a high school student these were as hot as we had seen! I mean the v twins we all were accustom too? I have a bike like this one,and they’re great! Our oldest son loves it over his gtx honda with the 1100 on her! But this is an amazing bike,and we’re just so balanced for my first exp!
    I have always been a huge Honda fan,these were the bikes we could purchase in the early 90’s too late 90’s these got very affordable! We had turned these into so many dreams this bike allows its owners to be grateful of a great bike. Even as so many of them that remain are in very bad shape,but,,,if you have an eye out for them,but they have gotten very hard to locate!
    In the next 10 to 15 years will see these 1st gens of the GoldWing! They are fantastic for cafe’ racers and they do get around. I replaced all shocks struts front forks rebuilt,and absolutely no CORN GAS! That stuff will kill your bike! And one other thing? Use cheap gas??? I know it sounds crazy,,but you will run your bike hot,and I do mean hot!
    God bless every citizen of our free countries in the worl,and those that live in not so lucky country?
    Thank you Lord for our freedom!

    I own and build these bikes. Own a 75’,78’,& a 81.
    People are intimidated by these machines.
    Pretty complicated. But plenty of books and videos! Easy bikes to work on in my opinion.
    I will never put pump fuel into my bikes though. I either use marine grade fuel or I make my own non- ethanol gasoline, yes it can become a hassle but my carburetors love me for it!

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wow I didn't know that about marine fuel being cleaner burning. I'll be doing the same from now on if that's the case. Thanks for the awesome tip. I appreciate the commentary. Thanks for watching and I hope your find the review true to the bike. Cheers. Nik

    • @pegasusmotorcycletours
      @pegasusmotorcycletours  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To clarify, is the problem the ethanol? I understand that marine fuel has no ethanol like the car pumps do and for Hondas in particicula ethanol is not ideal for the rubber and metal conponents. So you use Marine gassoline withkut ethanol, is this correct?

    • @ktlcustoms3847
      @ktlcustoms3847 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pegasusmotorcycletours There are a few videos out there that explains the process of making it. Although the reason marine grade fuel doesn’t have ethanol is because ethanol bonds to water, it doesn’t work the way it was intended and it wasn’t intended for anything with a carburetor.
      Small engines, motorcycles, boats and tons of other machinery thats fed bay a carb.
      Good luck👍
      Enjoy those Goldwings and keep the shiny side up😎.

    A couple of things. The later bikes were retuned for smog, not power band. This did lose power. I had a '77 with Bates bags and trunk with a Windjammer fairing. I raced an '85 Aspencade and we stayed dead even all the way to the top of 1st gear. I did race the 1200 at high speed. Both bike well exceeded 120 mph. (the 1200 speedo read 145, but we know that was way off).
    On the brake light, there is a pressure switch in the front manifold where it splits between the left and right disc.
    Spend the money of a fork brace. That will make a night and day difference on the bike with the fairing. Yes, it is not original, but well worth the money.
    Grease the driveshaft U-joints. Mine went out at about 70K miles. When it breaks, it will lock the rear wheel. I was lucky, as mine went in a parking lot.
    If you want to get serious about music, the glove box in the tank is a great place for a subwoofer.

    These early Goldwing models are the real ones in my opinion. Later Honda put more & more things on them to a point where they got uglier the more comfort equipment. To a point where I thought “if you want that much comfort why don’t you buy yourself a car..?”
    I do understand Honda going in that direction because its thought out as a touring bike from the start. But I’d like one of the early models - totally naked (-not me, the bike😆)

      Kjeldpedersen666 - I keep hearing folks talk about GL's being " touring bikes from the start". But here in California, I heard absolutely NOTHING of that, back when they first came out. All the chatter around town, AND at the local Honda dealer was about how " these are really going to take care of those 903cc Kawasakis ! And there was a lot of mumblings about putting Magnason blowers on them . Because with the water cooling & fan, plus the 'strong shaft drive', and the opposed cylinders design , it was like Honda had built them from the ground up to be hot rods !!
      Now, while they failed to capture the interest of most 'street hot rodders', they did get very popular, very quickly, with some of the BMW, and GUZZI "types" , who were tired of moving at a snails pace on under powered BMW's, etc ! And were an instant hit in that crowd with the help of Vetter Fairings & after market bags. So "AFTER" the touring crowd 'gifted' Honda with their interest in the bikes, after 3 to 4 years, the factory qot on the band wagon, smartly, by leaning heavily on their 'new' customer "touring" base, with the devices they needed to be happy out on the road. Like stereo's & toilets on board,... WAIT ! Uhhh, they never quite got to THAT... YET?! ( I think ?) They eventually got so huge & heavy, they put auto motors, & reverse gears in them ! UNBELIEVABLE ! And I heard they planned a 'convertable type' of top that, at the push of a button , would rise up out of the huge trunk, like a '57 FORD retractable hard top, to keep their joyous accountant base riders dry in the rain... or COOL on hot sunny days ! I honestly don' t know where it ever all stopped ! As they lost me at the 'water buffalo', 'drive shaft that makes the thing pitch "UP" when the throttle is applied! (un naturally) I just feel like it ought to sort of ' squat ' in the rear when I twist it up... not ' jump up ' when power is applied !
      But in spite of all these strange idiosyncrasies, I have to say, FINALLY, after 50 years now of hot rod Sportsters & Stroker Shovelheads, I REALLY WANT A 'GL' 1000 !!! BUT don't tell anyone !!
      I really like some of the "cafe racer" style bikes I've seen built out of early GL's, and I think if I wear a full coverage with a face mask, nobody I know will ever be the wiser ! And I, too, can enjoy the silky smooth delivery of power that only an early GL can deliver through that remarkable drive shaft ! As well as being able to stash my gloves in that WAY COOL glove compartment that looks like a fuel tank !!
      So their it is, folks. Now I don't have to go to Confession at church, since I just revealed myself to all you, so you can laugh at me all you want ! AAAnnd... Okay ! I'm sorry I've been making fun of you guys all these years !!!! ( but i REALLY like the cafe racer style 'naked' gl's . shhhh.....)

    This guy says 5,000 GL’s produced in 1975, I’ve read it was 13,000, and in some cases only 3,000 were sold in the US. Why is there such a disparity in the numbers and where are they getting this info from? I have a ‘75 GL # 2156, so I know they made at least 3,000.

We do travel alot as a family and wherever we go I have a bike waiting to feed the need, but otherwise it's been a pleasure to help other riders realize their tours. Gene whom I sold the Suzuki DR and who appears in that review is entering Belize with that bike any day now. As for the garage, you gave me an idea for the next video. The petcock is not vacuum activated, my understanding is that it only flows by gravity if the tank is over half full, and that's why there is a fuel pump. This might be wrong though.

    Is there a reliable source to get rebuild kits for the engines and transmissions on these? My grandpa has a 1975 and a 1976 that he said he'd probably just give to me if I can find a place to keep them. They may not need much work, but nobody has tried to start them in over a decade and I'd like to have an idea of what I may run into in terms of parts availability. Even if he keeps them, I'd like to try to get at least one running for him.

      Hi there. Parts are easy to find since the bikes are still running string. One just sold for nearly 6 grand near me, in mind condition, same.red with luggage. There is an only me forum for owners and the authority is a mechanic by the name of Ray Woodridge from northern California town of Jackson. If you Google his name with gold wing his info will come up. Also, check out the comments below from other owners who make recommendations re servicing. The bike will definitely require a cleaning or rebuild of the carbs and their synchronization. The tank might be rusted. New brake lines, timing belts, etc. Apologies for the tardy response, I've been filming. I just finished filming yesterday the review of the new KLR, Kawasaki gave it to me for a month so I haven't been online. Good luck. Happy holidays. Nik

Such as, for instance, throttle /clutch cables, calipers, headlamp assembly etc...Would you happen to know of any reputable source or dealers that could be recommended for these Bikes?
      Also, I used to send all my carburator work to "Pistol Pete" who used to specialize in Vintage Goldwing carbs. Unfortunately he has since passed away. So I'm going to need someone else who can do the work. The carbs aren't exactly user friendly.
