Thank you very much! That's inspired me to look into repainting parts of my old TVR myself. I'd noticed that the dealer who I'd bought the car from had had some repair work done using water based paints which I didn't think was possible with old TVR colours. I'll be watching your other videos on pearl and metallic paints to learn more about that final drop coat. Thanks again!
Hi Tony, thanks very much for all the help here, great stuff. I am a "perfectionist" DIY'er, and have made hundreds of mistakes to get it right, and this has helped me immensely. The Iwata HTE 3 settings i havent got right untl i saw this. Also this use of of fast hardener and and thinner has fixed a lot of my issues.(more suited to our enviroment and hunidity here in the UK and Ireland, was advised never to use fast!). I just spray in my garage/workshop with a small extraction fan, use a hair dryer on the base coat and infrared lamp for the top coat.Just sprayed a black metallic on the full rear bumper of a skoda today, and the results were amazing. (just have to get rid of the dust nibs... but now have come to expect that, especially when spraying outdoors or in my garage and let go of trying to get it 100% right. I wet down everything before I start to reduce dust as much as possible). Would love to have a go in a proper booth one day. Again, thanks for all the help. Keep up the great work.
Great tutorial , again very well explained with a great result goes a long way to show that preparation and using the correct technique is the most important aspect rather than just buying big dollar equipment and not knowing how to approach a task
definitely mate its alot about how you do something rather than worrying about what your using in most cases with this kind of work, having good equipment matters but not if you are not sure of the right ways to go about it in the first place
I just sprayed my first bench top with waterborne floor 'varnish'. I used a $60 NZ electric spray gun, (Ozito brand), from the local hardware store and strained the varnish through a piece of rinsed out garden frost cloth! I knew I was heading for disaster but I kept thinking "what would Rolls Royce do"? I knew half of it was in the prep so I was fastidious with that, and I made a little half-tent/booth thing out of polythene drop sheets. Bugger me it came out mint! Anyway, my Iwata AZ3 arrived today, and I pick up my compressor on Tuesday. Looking forward to spraying stuff over Christmas. Great vids mate - learning heaps Cheers from NZ
Really good video! I've got a stupid question but I'm trying to paint my car with a water based base coat, when I'm mixing the paint up what do I mix it with, reducer??
The best part I hope ppl are noticing is your technique when spraying, especially when you purposely go really slow, there’s an upholstery guy on TH-cam he never speaks, of course ppl complain that he doesn’t but if you just watch you learn there as well, 💥👏🏻💥
Thanks man I just hope people are getting something from these newer more detailed videos as that’s what matters most for myself always trying to put out better content for you guys
How do you add reducer ? I'm new to this ppg stuff I was told reduce 25% of the total paint mixture you make. So if the paint comes out to 1 ounces which is like 12 grams total what would I reduce it too
Great video. I love water based base coat. Easier cleaning with no solvents in the air. I didn't catch whether the clear coat you used was wb or sb? Is there even such a thing as water based automotive clears? I have only used 2k solvent based.
Excellent Tony. Couple of questions you could answer please. Why is their no water borne clear coat because it seems pointless using water borne base coat then 2K isocyanate clear coat? Is there water borne solid colour paint available? Thanks
There are 1k clears available, if you don't want isocyanate. They are going to require a fair bit of polishing though to achieve a good depth and won't be as hard
I've always wondered in waterbased if the drop coat (spraied after flash off) once dried , leave a micro peel that can be visible in some lights after the clear Is cured. I notice this problem in solvent base(more visible in lower solid clears). If i spray the drop coat with no flash off (when the base Is still wet) this doesn't happen and dries smooth and so the clear.
Nice video Tony👍 I will try first time to use water borne paint. Do you use any reduser for paint or it’s ready to go when i get it from paint mixing shop? Thanks
I have been trying akzo nobel imperium waterborne which to me is re branded lesonal as the color formulas are the same as well as reduction. It says to put down a 100% first coat, which I take as a closed coat. It will leave fish eye looking spots if its not closed and you can see the holes like in clear. It will run easily on that first coat. I have been turning in the fluid on my guns. I'm going to try your method and see what happens, I like the double control coat. I have seen that used in ppg. I'm switching from low voc solvent where it needs a wet spraying gun and cannot do a control coat. How much were you reducing metallics? Thanks
All waterbornes are very different. The stuff we spray is wet on wet. Almost 100 percent coverage and then straight to a control coat, no flash time. It’s amazing how fast we can paint now. Little caution with whites. Those you need a little flash time just because of density. Even in our crazy humidity, with fans and temp set, I can clear in about 10-15 min
Hi Tony can you tell me, For a mobile setup in colder weather would you have a solvent or water based setup???? My temp range from 25 degrees down to 5 degrees. Thanks
Hiya mate honestly solvent would be better however you would have to check the rules on using solvent on a mobile environment, water would be fine if you had an ir lamp or even heat gun to help dry the base
Always wondered about the water born process. Great insight. Thank you. We only get solvent based here, but it's nice to know. So the clear coat is 2K is that right?
I’d like to give water born base a go on my full car but worried about drying it all properly . Booth (diy home ) has cross flow extraction . Any tips mate ? Thinking I can’t go all around the car with a little blow gun ?!!!
Cheers Tony . It’s a centrally heated garage , probably gets to about 20 degrees plus I have a space heater to help temps . I’m thinking summer too anyway by the time it’s prepped .usually use solvent based but got to be better for me and the neighbours Only using solvent clear coat ?!
Simple question, what product do you use to thin the water base , base coat, product, qty thinned, pressure at the gun, If you can give us a mtraxi of waterbase product , prime thinner, base thinner clear thinner.
You use waterbase thinner mate , all the rest of the info your asking there is explained in the video and also is product specific we’ve done our best in this series to cover everything
this would be fine for professional work or beginner work tbh mate as you can see it puts out a great finish with ease but for professional work daily painting like i myself do i prefer something a little faster and more refined but thats were high price comes in
Watching this again got me thinking that now I have a good heater in my booth (getting 22-26C) would waterborne basecoat be an option Tony? you said it gave a better finish on the clear which is my goal, so is there a difference between waterbased and waterborne basecoat and what do you use to thin the paint and do you use the thinner to clean the gun or is there a cheaper option? I can get waterbased basecoat from the same place as my solvent based at Advanced Paints but not sure on the thinners, cheers bud, John
Hi john do you need waterbased thinner and waterbased cleaner not solvent as it won’t mix , and yes waters an option but as I said in the video the issue is youll have to force dry it with air mate I’ve used water in a proper heater booth and not and had it work both ways fine as for the difference between waterbase and waterbourne I think one has a little more solvent content than the other hut don’t quite me know that
Hiya mate yeah I knew I need waterbased thinners but wasn't sure if you used the waterbased thinner or if there was a cheaper option for gun cleaner. I'm only spraying single panels so with one of those blowers it shouldn't be a problem (I hope haha!), Advanced paints is selling waterbased basecoat the make is Clostermann I've used their solvent base and it's fine, I'll have to look into it more, Oh and I'm getting good results now with the roberlo 610, I now have the KX46 and using the quartz speedster thinner. stay safe!!
Yes mate just being very carful, the doc came today and gave Sonia her covid vaccine, I thought she would have to wait longer but she does have a lot of health problems. I have to wait a few more weeks until they do the over 60's I'm just an old git so probably expendable 👨🦯😂

I didn't quite catch if that was solvent-based clear coat can you use a solvent-based clear coat over water base base coat?
All clears pretty much are the same
For water based or solvent based base
