I was 10 years old in '59. I remember some of these passings, but most of all George Reeves who played Superman. I was a big fan of the show and was just getting into super-hero comics that year. Still have Action Comics #252, the debut of Supergirl.
A lot of Hollywood's Golden Age died in this year.
I was 5
Same feeling
The last survivor of the civil war and the first soldier killed in Vietnam both occurred in 1959.
wrong
As a young boy of 12, I remember very well, "The Day The Music Died". I had their records and I was saddened by their dying. I didn't understand. I remember feeling bad and privately crying.
He was serving in the Air Force Dino Jr.
And I wrote a song about it , American Pie, maybe you've heard it. LOL.
Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens are mentioned, what about "The Big Bopper" (J.P. Richardson) who also died in that plane crash into a cornfield in Iowa, his biggest hit "Chantilly Lace"...
The Bopper wasn't big enough
@@harlow743 He should have been mentioned, not because he had the hit record Chantilly Lace, but because he was on the same plane
@1234pouvez And The Big Bopper was the reason why the three of them were on the plane. Waylon Jennings, the country singer from Texas, gave up his seat on the plane to The Big Bopper because the latter was suffering from cold-like symptoms.
@@1234pouvez What about the pilot?
As soon as I read the title of this piece I thought, 'They better include Billie Holliday'. And you did. Thank you.
The ones who died of heart attacks between the ages of 45-55 look much older
People did look older back in the day. They smoked and drank to much. Very little exercise and bad eating habits. They did not have the medications and testing they have today to keep people alive longer.
Carl Switzer who played Alfalfa on Our Gang or Little Rascals died in 1959 by homicide.
As the result of an argument over a dog!
People who grew up in this time period watched early television and the movie the movies played late at night and watched after 1959. So there faces
We’re a known sight
You missed Carl Switzer --- Alfalfa of the Little Rascals. In fact, he died the same day as DeMille. The newspapers all covered DeMille's death big time and Carl's notice ended up in a small article in the back pages.
IIRC, his death was a murder in a dope deal that went bad. Still, he's always be Alfalfa to me.
Sounds like Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett.
@@Diogenes-ty9yy No,its was over a dog and a $50.00 reward ,Carl Switzer was a hothead and attacked a man in his home .
@@andyvanm1 OK, I was simply going with something I read in either "Hollywood Babylon" or "Hollywood Babylon II" by Kenneth Anger. He opined that it was a dope deal that went bad.
The great Errol Leslie Thompson Flynn passed away on the 14 th October 1959. Gone too soon. A tragic figure, an underated actor but above all a great action figure. Stephen King.
Thank you❤
Lou Costello worked himself to death. He worked literally nonstop to the point of being bedridden by illness for a year. But he went straight back to work with Bud Abbott. They were in vaudeville, on radio, then Hollywood and on television. He also suffered from the stress of losing his son in a drowning tragedy in 1942.
Yes, Lou Costello died that year in March. He was only 52 or 53 years old. He suffered a heart attact, I believe.
" Who's on first " is such a fantastic sketch.
@@vincentcrimona8593 Lou Costello was 3 days shy of his 53th birthday when he passed away.
Both Abbott and Costello had older siblings who lived decades longer than they did. Bud's sister Olive lived to be 101, dying in 1997 (the year of the centennial of Bud's birth). Lou's brother Pat lived to be 88, dying in 1990.
My wife showed me that house in Paterson NJ where that tragic accident happened.
Pools have mandatory fences and locked gates ever since for most town ships
Most of them look very old than their age.
A lot of them today could have extended their lives by 10-20 years barring a disease or an accident. Medicine has made great strides. Of course alcohol, tobacco, diet, and exercise play a part. The oldest on this list I believe was 82. Today, you see more 90-100.
They always do. I think your brain observes and processes the style of clothing and hair styles and possibly even the style of the photo and associates those things with older people. It therefore concludes that they are older than they actually are in the pictures. Did you ever notice that movies often yellow the screen when they are depicting something from the past. I think they are inviting your brain to associate what you are seeing on the screen with the old , yellowed photos from times past. Same concept.
I rem hearing about Lou Costello the next day; It was my Sister Kathy's birthday; and I rem James Gleason from "Come Fill the Cup" with James Cagney; Gleason was Casey's Recovery Sponsor in the movie ( I saw it working in Treatment during the 80's);
I turned 11 that year. I was old enough to recognize some actors, but was evidently finding it difficult to separate the real life person from the screen life persona. It makes much more sense now. Narragansett Bay
No it doesn't.
I loved him as a kid. I think, like Dean Martin years later, the loss of his son killed his reason for living. They were both shattered fathers.
Mario lanza!
There was no mention of J. P. Richardson, Carl Switzer, or Frank Lloyd Wright.
It's a pity they never heard the beautiful song : - A Summer Place -, released at the end of that same year.
No it's not.
No mention of J.P. Richardson, the Big Bopper?
Kay Kendall was so pretty!
Extraordinarily so.
She was a very attractive woman & I'll always remember her playing the trumpet in the top British comedy movie Genevieve (hope that spelling is right??) with John Gregson, Kenneth More & Diana Sheridan. Correct me but I believe Sheridan is still alive as of 2024???
@@brendonrutherford5118 You spelt Genevieve correctly, but it's Dinah Sheridan not Diana. She died on 25th November 2012.
Lots of these actors died young from Heart Attacks. Back then a lot of them probably never visited doctors so they had no clue they had heart problems.
Or their doctor never checked them thoroughly? No reason to pass of a heart attack that young. 😞💔
Lot of young deaths in 1959.
No there weren't.
My favorite actor Errol Flynn and Superman.
So many had heart attacks at such young ages.
Bad nutrtion...constant smoking.... not surprised
And they did not test for cholesterol and triglycerides then. Today, medication for HBP and the others can keep one alive an extra 10-20 years.
Lou Costello's heart was damaged by rheumatic fever in 1943. He almost died then.
Paul Douglass was great in "This Could Be The Night" (1956) with Jean Simmons, Tony Franciosa, the hilarious Neile Adams and featuring Ray Anthony as the band leader.
Not by any means a screwball comedy, closer to "Hatfull Of Rain."
These lives ended the year mine began.
No they didn't.
In 1900, the life expectancy for white men was 46.6 years. A Black man's life expectancy was considerably less at 32.5 years.
Medicine has done amazing things and so did educating people about smoking.
MEDICINE HAD NOTHING TO WITH IT AND SANITATION HAD EVERYTHING TO WITH IT
Living and working conditions are a part of that too.
Medicine has done very little......Lifespan has increased because of prevention of childbirth mortality.....otherwise all of our Presidents from 1776 on MUST HAVE BEEN SUPERMEN.
Infant deaths contributed to much of the life expectancy.
Where's The Big Bopper?
The year I was discharged from the US Navy, remember all of them.
No it wasn't.
What about the Big Bopper and Richie Valens who lost their lives too along with Buddy Holly in that terrible plane crash?
Ritchie Valens was mentioned along with Buddy Holly but the omission of The Big Bopper was puzzling that he was not mentioned.
Found an error it shows that Edmund Goulding was born 20 March 8191, supposed to be 1891.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏
It took only 65 years to update this?
Arthur Q. Bryan aka Elmer Fudd
Whenever I watch a listing like this one, it seems like the only people prone to die are actors. Is the rest living forever?
I can't think of any actor on this list who DIDN'T 'die too soon.'
Cecil b demille had nothing to do with Cleopatra, the Movie. This thing lied. " False in one, thing falls in all" is the old Roman saying
Una O'Connor played maid marians maid opposite olivia DE Havilland and Errol Flynn in Robin Hood love Anthony Fed ex lol ❤
She was in the Invisible Man too.😊
80% of these people I never heard of....come off it.
Yes you have.
B 68 soon .what scares me?.. sooooo many different causes that will make ME die....oboy i gonna b in trouble ..it seems ....drat....
The year Santa Claus died
What you talking about Willis.😮
Thumbs DOWN!! Rotten music and too many typos!
So Edmund Goulding WASN'T a time traveler from the future born in the year 8191?
Lou Costello was never funny imo
Yes he was.
Any jew ? Who ?😊
Thank you.
