The main problem is, as the Wano arc's ending was being set up, there was only Kidd and Law to fight her. And if she won, who would defeat her? While Kaido's showings do seem to surpass Big Mom's when it comes to durability and raw combat, Big Mom hax is something else entirely. The only reason Kidd's Damned Punk managed to knock her off was because she couldn't use her fruit powers to suck the lifespan of the people nearby because Law used a room to silence her. Kidd was using his Damned Punk for a WHILE. This just goes to show how much hax regeneration Big Mom has, and even with Law silencing her, her durability remains top tier. If Kaido and Big mom were to fight with Big mom having access to people's lifespans to fully utilize her fruit, I think she could even outlast Kaido in a full-powered fight.

Big Mom is the definition of wasted potential and the fact that wano felt rushed and slow at the same time. Big Mom is by far the most well written and complex villain by Oda, even supassing Doflamingo. Like Doffy she is a character with many faces that even contradict each other. Big Mom: a mother, an overgrown child, a queen, a force of nature and schemer. Her character can fit many strenghts of One Piece very easly. You need some goofy comedy? Big Mom works. You need some serious deadly tension? Big Mom works. You need to feel pure hatred towards someone who has done many dirty things? Big Mom works. Also the personal animosity she has with Luffy only loses to Akainu and BB. The long running conflict and hate Big Mom and Luffy have with each other blows out of the water the dynamic btween Luffy and Kaido. It's way more intense and has more build up. Big Mom is the best DF user of the entire series. Aside from the obvious mom thing her DF has (creating life), it's also worthy noting how ridiculous and versatile Big Mom is. In the rooftop Big Mom acted more of a supporting ally for Kaido only relying on her DF shananigans to deal damage. When u see a character that battles far away from the action you would think that approaching them would give you an advantage...but that's not true for Big Mom. She is strong as Kaido with punches that can one-shot the majority of the OP cast in close range. She is also a crazy ass swordsman that can create shockwaves with her sword and fight both in close and long range. BM is broken and yet doesn't feel weird because her whole character is a huge combination of many concepts. Oda wrote himself into a coner with Wano. We all know that Oda doesn't really care that much about powerscaling, but that was too much. Oda had to get rid of almost the entire Big Mom crew to give a chance to the alliance, and yet it felt almost impossible for the raid on Onigashima resulting in a win for everyone on the allaiance. At the end of the day Big Mom was tricked every single time by the SH before the fight with Kid and Law. And said fight against Kid and Law felt empty. There was no personal conflict btween Big Mom and Kid/Law. Kid stole something from her and that was NEVER brought up during the fight, Kid from all sudden switched btween wanting to beat Kaido to trusting 100% in Luffy and dedicating himself to beat Big Mom. Big Mom was just there to give Kid and Law a W, that's it. And to me the fight felt pretty unfair to Big Mom. The fact that Law tanked a lot of hits from her while she was powered up is just straight up bonkers and makes no sense. Law has never been built up as super durable fighter and Big Mom is a force of nature who can defeat one of her/Kaido's commanders with few punches. After that feat Law used 2 "last attacks" and one of them was the power of corazon's fruit...Law doesn't feel like a versatile fighter like BM, he just feels like a cheater at this point. Big Mom was my favorite character and it's sad to see that her whole role in the history was just giving 2 random supernovas that have nothing to do with her a W.
Although I don't feel as strongly about my love for her, I still like her a lot, and agree with what you're saying. The idea of a character that's basically a massive baby with huge destructive capabilities is a great set up. Her backstory is incredibly weird, and it still feels like that needs to be resolved. She needs to find out what happened to mother caramel. And it's not just that, her entire world view was spoken on a lot in Whole Cake Island, and in my opinion I was incredibly excited to see how it all tied together. We've never seen a villan that has a seemingly noble goal but goes about it a terrible way before. It felt like her story needed to conclude with her facing Luffy, but that didn't happen. All of that to say, she's much more interesting than the nothing that Kaido is. But the problem is the Wano arc completely destroyed her character in my opinion. She's reduced to a walking plot device, and screws up so many times along side Kaido that you question how this person made it so far into the pirate world. It's just like Kaido. We're told how much of a menace this person is repeatedly, but we never see her actually do anything to live up to that reputation. Her entire existence in the arc has nothing to do with the trajectory of her story arc and as a result it was kinda just like nothing happened with her for like 4 years. The Wano arc had such a massive problem portraying who are supposed to be the strongest characters in the series as complete fuck ups. In my opinion it's clear that not much thought was put into this arc, besides the general "who's fighting who" that they probably go through. It really is probably the worst case in my eyes of post time skip thinking that longer and more characters = better writing because it's more epic or something like that, when in reality trimming down the useless bloated cast of characters that need to be constantly repositioned, checked in with, and have a piece of dialogue every now and then would help potentially alleviate so many problems the story faces. It got to the point where a chapter would go by, and it would consist of several panels where for like 1 or 2 panels, you see a character and they have one basic line of dialogue, they move on and go to the next panel, where another random character would appear, have their own basic line of dialogue, and repeat. It is almost impossible to have the reader form a bond with the characters if there is straight up not enough time spent with the characters. Which, saying it now, is absolutely ludicrous considering "not enough time" is the last thing the longest arc in the series should be worried about having. (kinda turned into a Wano rant in general, but what can I say I feel pretty strongly about how that arc treated its plot and characters.)
Bro trying to power scale big mom is so inconsistent and weird she's comparable in terms of raw power and defense to kaido in my opinion and has a really op devil fruit that basically gives her other fruit abilities but she falls short because she's incompetent af like she's the one top tier you could actually abuse and plan around you know
that's the thing tho: when in her life did she have to struggle with power enough to strategize like law does with his fruit? She has literally been so strong for so long at the top of the planet that the very idea of getting stronger herself through creative planning and training weren't even close to being in her or anyone else's minds. Tbh imo this is why the doffy family save doffy and vergo, big mom's crew excluding katakuri, and the beast pirates, including kaido, were less powerful than they could have been: they were in comfortable situations of power or protection that didn't get challenged often. now that we're in the final arc, most if not all of the combatants are either challengers or active rather than passive antagonists, so we're more likely to see greater and more creative approaches to fights

Big Mom should be given a redemption arc. Her attacks in Wano for me is so versatile and would consider it one of the best but its damage to the main characters made it look weak AF like the lightning (except for Luffy of course), punches etc. Oda made Big Mom so weak and ended being nerfed so bad, her df also did not require for her to be able to speak first before she can put soul (demonstrated when she was a kid) so making her silent by Law, nullifying her power to put soul was a bad writing. Also in WCI she was using Haki + Df, but in Wano she was purely using DF against Law and Kid. Kid and Law gained awakening out of nowhere lol. BM pirates were also stuck in the waterfalls like WTH.
