You're constantly smiling throughout the video, making the day of countless people, like me. My challenge is still trying to figure out exactly what's the main culprit or reason for my avocados' struggle. But I'm speculating (about my main avocado) that it's Pithyum root rot, not Phytophthora, Potassium and other nutrient deficiencies, too compacted soil, malfunctioning drainage holes, imbalanced watering, temperature fluctuations, poor drainage, although the peat substrate to perlite ratio is 3:2 give or take and insufficient light (dawn- 7 am; dusk-4:45 pm). I'm way too scared to fertilize it but I have to. My other avocado, that was a gift for my aunt started dying back rapidly, especially after I repotted it in a smaller pot and different soil. Basicaly half the stem is already black and the few leaves on top have dried up and are crispy, I've been trying to save it from root rot over the last few months, but the cold and transplant shock, it just would not pull through. But my other avocados are looking amazing. Every one of your videos are so inspiring and education, yet are extremely interesting and top notch overall. It's time to update on the avocado I planted outside, along with the apple seeds and the rare albino avocado. I initially thought I planted the avocado too deep. But it doesn't mind it. Of course in the first few days of being planted in the ground, it got stunted. But it bounced back not long after after the raining season started. And I think it's starting to grow. I planted it when it had 3 leaves and a decent root system. And it hasn't dropped its leaves. Now, obviously, it's gonna have some damage from the wind and occasionally heavy rain we get. But it'll be alright. I haven't decided whether I'll put some protection or uproot it and put it indoors. But we'll cross that bridge when we get there. After all, I've got to worry about the heat waves in mid summer. The albino avocado which has white leaves is growing slowly. But it has a thick trunk and a well-developed root system. It's in water, so I know how the roots are doing. The new root growth is happening at the bottom inch of the cup, so it's not growing as many lateral roots as some of my other avocado, but it's alright. I'll keep it in water for a while. As for the apple seeds, I planted 10 of them in the ground, only 3 of them germinated. But there might be another slower one just sprouting. The 3 successful or fastest ones are doing fantastic. Since apples thrive where I live, I'll keep them out. But I will seperate them from one another. After all, we don't want them getting their roots crowded. I think I'm getting pretty amazing results. I'll update you on my potted avocados. And... my original avocado. I might update on my mango as well. I might try growing cherries from cuttings as well. Another long message, I know. But I'm really excited for some of my plants, some that is. Not everything is perfect.
Your incredible! I’ve watched a lot of videos on avocado’s but none as informative and exciting as yours. And your farm is gorgeous. Thanks for everything and you will see me at your website! Cheers.
I had to like this video because of that comment you made about “ if tropical fruit isn’t your thing but you like to look this good buy this T-shirt “ 😅😅😅
I grew a Florida avocado tree from seed that gave me fruit after 6 years but I lived in Naples Florida which is a really good zone for avocados. I now live in Abruzzo Italy which is EU zone 9 and I am going to attempt Hass from seed. With the climate change situation I think this area could really adapt to avocado well. We are already becoming a kiwi powerhouse. Nobody thinks of Italy for kiwis and I too was shocked, but they do amazing in Abruzzo.
Hello from Trinidad and Tobago great video absolutely beautiful trees with lovely avocados we call them zabocar and also avocado, here in the Caribbean most trees will produce within the first 2 years and as they grow they produce more and more from simply putting out plants in the ground and giving it proper fertilizers but I guess as you say climate and when country wide it begins to bare it gets thrown away in abundance but again the question is how much can you eat and how much do you wanna eat till you sick of it.
Grew 1st Avocado tree in a pot for prob 6 yrs transferred from daughters house to ingrnd at mine. Been in grnd 2-3 yrs but top 1’ got frost harm last winter, covered but top tip got hit, but rest unharmed, so now its growing great! Bought a Catalina & two just says Persea americana so need to get educated quick. Oh & btw my daughter bought your tank shirt blk & I bought reg in lime great shirts!, Think I want a tank also.
Beautifully explained. I try and convince my seedling growing friends that get emotionally attached to their plant to graft. Just do a little chip bud, nothing to lose. But they won't do it. Thinking they want to get fruit from the o.g seedling.
I find this so funny because I was gifted a young avocado plant and was watching these videos feeling so pained to cut and graft! And thank goodness I did cus it’s a bought plant so now I know it’s grafted and not needed 😅. You learn something new everyday!
Awesome video! I also started an avocado plant from a pit in Dec 2023. I transferred it to a pot with soil. What do I do to put it in a bigger pot so it could produce avocados❓
Thank you once more for this informative video! What I would still like to know is how to prune the tree to keep it compact but get the most fruit out of it. Furthermore, what fertilizers are necessary in a pot versus growing in the ground. I found some special Avocado (& Citrus) fertilizers in the local garden center with N/K: 4,5/6 or would you recommend N/P/K: 6/6/6 like in your other videos?
Thanks for your great video! What final pot size do you recommend for a grafted tree with the intention of having it fruit at the best of its possibilities?
Really love your videos. I can see your passion for what you do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion. Truly is a appreciated. How can I get some of your Russell and Simmons avocados. I'm in Jamaica.
I've got a 5 or 6 year old avocado in a pot... but REALLY need to get it in a bigger pot. It's about 5 ft tall by now, but has only two side-shoots. Should I trim it back to get more branching? (Not really trying to grow fruit).
yes you should prune from the top to stimulate lateral growth. Don't do the transplant and pruning at the same time. Do one first and wait a month then do the other. you don't want to do two stressful events in the same month.
I had this very question, because where I live it does occasionally frost over in winter! (Even though I'm in Zone 8.5.) I want to keep my avocado trees in large pots on a sunporch, but didn't know if I'd actually be able to get fruit from them. Excellent information to have!!

Hello - great information and enthusiasm. I have a young Kona Sharwil and a Reed, and live in zone 10a with temps above 100 degrees for a good part of the summer, and very intense sun. After burning the leaves on the Reed, I now have these young trees under a 60% shade cloth, and I sprayed the leaves with Surround WP for additional protection. They are both now looking happy and healthy, but I realized that avocado trees can be sensitive to the intense sunlight in my zone. I up potted the Reed from a 15 gal pot to a 25 gal pot, and the Kona Sharwil from a 3 gal pot to a 15 gal pot. I want to add a Nabal to the group. Will I need to take the same precautions every year with these trees, or will I eventually be able to stop using the shade cloth and Surround? Thanks for the informative video!!
Hi nerucognitive, certain varieties have a hard time with areas with high sunlight. Varieties that grow a lot of leaves have a better time. It's my understanding the Sharwil is from Hawaii so I would expect it to do well in 10a. Good luck with your collection
Great videos Couple questions and maybe motivation for your next video How do you mix soil for potted trees and what/when to fertilize? This is for 25 gallon pots as I want fruit! Oh, what about fertilizer during flower and fruit stages? Mahalo
Hi Fire, I mix potting soil, perlite, and sand but I don't have ratios, I just kind of keep mixing till I get something close to what I want. As for fertilizer I put 6-6-6 every 60 days.
Hi there, I’m in PNW Washington state zone 8b and I’m trying to grow avocados long enough to get them mature and in the ground. Any suggestions for keeping them from freezing when the temps get down below 30 f? Like would it be better to wrap the tree w blanket while in the greenhouse or would it be better to bring in doors where I don’t have window for it? Thanks for your time, Jon
if you can and it's just for an overnight or a day bringing them inside would be best. or you can put a heater near them or lights that give off heat on chilly nights.
I have a 20 inch tall Avocado plant that I grew from seed but I didn't know anything about the grafting. Does this means that I'll never get the fruit? Would love to hear from others .
What varieties would be the best for containers. Considering taste, production, and size? I’ve heard of Wurtz and Pinkerton and that’s about all. Thanks!
since the tree will be limited in size in a pot I would suggest any variety that's small in size so Lula, Fuerte, Hass. the bigger heavy varieties will stress or even break smaller branches and trunks
I have 8 seeds just poppin sprouts..I will be putting in pots tomorrow. All I know is the sticker said Mexico! I have no idea the kind..but they are large, super sweet and very juicy! Love my mangos..Thank you for all the info you teach and share!❤

I have a dozen planters in an outdoor area where I have planted avocados two or three of them are over 2 m tall none of them are bearing fruit and I assumed they had to become trees first and I would never have that kind of space where I live. How do we get those tall beautiful trees to bear fruit if they are not in the ground. I have 12 of them big and beautiful but no fruit
it takes an avocado tree 10 years on average before it bears fruit so you still have some time to wait unfortunately. mean time just continue caring for it.
@@SleepyLizard ha ha yes I know this when you plant them in the ground as a tree should be planted but I see people online planting them in small pots and reaping fruit. Hello to you. Although this video is not about mangoes...... I have an important question to ask you about growing a mango tree. What is the reason for grafting a mango plant grown from a seed? Does grafting make a tree produce fruit faster than a tree that just grew from seed? Does the growth process of a grafting tree grow faster? I thank you in advance for your answer. I really like the videos you upload every time.
Hi Yoav, This vid does a better job explaining it than I could by replying: th-cam.com/video/j5WFvuYx4jc/w-d-xo.html Everything I say about avocados in this vid applies to mango. One thing about mango though...certain varieties don't require grafting. They are known as polyembryonic and their seeds will grow genetic replicas of the mother tree. So depending on what type of mango you got the seed from it may or may not require grafting.
Iv been growing two of them now for a MTH and they are only 16 inc tall I don't know how to graft them can you please show a video on how thank you I love growing them just to see them grow I did have one for five years but when I was on vacation the person did not take care of it thank you
Hi Mary, thank you for reaching out. This vid will show you how to graft: th-cam.com/video/YU6Y3zahCic/w-d-xo.html Do you have a favorite avocado variety?
I have a 3 year old avocado tree in a 25 gallon planter grown from seed. I would love to have a fruiting avocado tree. Should I give up and buy one at a nursery or should I just keep my tree?
Is it possible to grow one from seed and have it fertilized from the mother tree if left under or near the mother tree or bee pollination for several years?
@@SleepyLizardfinally my dream comes true and I got myself a few trees I was dreaming about: Hass, Meyer lemon and mandarin. All are zone 9+ I’m in 7b (NYC) and I’m trying to decide how to winterize my babies. There’s 3 options and all 3 have pros and cons. Bring in inside of the hose during winter months, keep it in a heated greenhouse in a pot or (the one I’m mostly curious about) plant it in ground inside of the greenhouse. My uneducated guess is planting it in ground inside of a greenhouse is the best option to maintain a strong and healthy tree, but, is there any dangers to the tree this way? Such as, again, uneducated guess, roots going outside of the greenhouse into a frozen soil, damaging the tree?

I would appreciate any advice I can get. I live in the midwest Zone 6B. I have a three or four year old Avocado tree in a container, it has grown to about 10ft tall.😮 last winter I was still able to get it in my sun room. it was quite bent over all winter. This winter I doubt that I can get it in there. Im open to Ideas and suggestions, can I just Lop off the top. what would be the recommended time of year to do that, Towards Fall? Thank you in advance.
TBH. I don't know that I was really growing it for the fruit. I guess it was probably in the back of my mind. my concern was more just keeping it alive at this point is there anything that I can do to continue to grow it regardless of whether I will get fruit or not. I'm open to any recommendations/suggestions. Thank you in advance for your time. great video by the way.amazing Plants.
Yes, all you have to do is prune it to the height and shape you want and then periodically remove it from the pot to prune the roots and change the soil
Lots of useful information. Thanks for sharing👍. I have a decent size avocado tree grow from seed. I don’t have a second or mature tree to make the grafting and I don’t want discard my tree since it’s been with me for 2 years. Any other way to speed up the fruit bearing time? Do you think it’d work if I order a mature branch to do the grafting by myself? Do you sell mature branches 😂?😅 any suggestion? Appreciate it.
Hi Nika, yes you can order cuttings online and graft onto your tree. I used to sell cuttings but I don't any more. If you occasionally do a google search you'll eventually find a nursery who has them in season.
Ok Sleepy Lizard.....Listen up good... You have the gift of the gab, God gifted you with this virtue. Put it to good use. Good Luck Lizzy......Raymond Love your video's. Keep em coming.
David, There are no polyembryonic avocados. There are polyembryonic mangos. If an avocado seed sprouts two stalks it's still one tree and it's best to prune one and let the other grow. Polyembryonic mangos on the other had will put up multiple shoots but each will have it's own root system.
Hey Tom, I have a one year old sapling i grew from seed that is about 2 feet tall. I dont know the variety but the avocado i grew it from was delicious. Do you think it is possible for me to continue growing it in a pot and get fruit or should i cut it down and graft a new branch on it. Cutting it down to where there are no leaves would leave it at about half a foot. What do you think?
I'm going to transplant my Mexican and Hass avocados to larger containers. What soil do I use? Do I have to formulate it myself? Do I just buy a name brand (should it retain or easily drain water? -- I know citrus is all about the 5-1-1) or do I use non enriched decomposed granite as some recommend? Need advice!
yeah, you can go with any potting soil blend and add some 6-6-6 fertilizer every 60 days or so. Don't worry when they wilt a little, transplant shock is normal and clears up quickly.
Believe it or not, I grew 2 avocado trees from seeds and they both started to have fruits in 4 years. One seed had had root in the fruit when I bought it.

Cheers.

Avocado, Easy fruit making and useful tips
for sure. It just wants to grow
Nobody thinks of Italy for kiwis and I too was shocked, but they do amazing in Abruzzo.
fantastic
Hello from Trinidad and Tobago great video absolutely beautiful trees with lovely avocados we call them zabocar and also avocado, here in the Caribbean most trees will produce within the first 2 years and as they grow they produce more and more from simply putting out plants in the ground and giving it proper fertilizers but I guess as you say climate and when country wide it begins to bare it gets thrown away in abundance but again the question is how much can you eat and how much do you wanna eat till you sick of it.
I been eating so many this week 😍
@@SleepyLizard so have I ,what we do is ripe them peel then and place into zip lock bags and into the freezer and you have smoothies whole year round!
I saw someone ordered a tank last evening. I wonder if it was you?😝

Love Haas avocados.
yep!
Beautifully explained. I try and convince my seedling growing friends that get emotionally attached to their plant to graft. Just do a little chip bud, nothing to lose. But they won't do it. Thinking they want to get fruit from the o.g seedling.
it's strangely emotional for some people yes.
What do I do to put it in a bigger pot so it could produce avocados❓
there's a vid on my channel about repotting seedlings. it'll tell you all you need to know.
Hi Richard, I stick with the 6-6-6
Very educational learned stuff here, thank you. I love to buy grafted fruit like avocados and plant it in a pot. I’ll go to your website Sir.
I don't have trees but you will have better luck at www.larafarmsmiami.com
You seem like Avery smart man ! Thanks for the info! I’m going to definitely grow avacodos in a pot🤟🏾
thank you for the compliment
Thanks for your great video! What final pot size do you recommend for a grafted tree with the intention of having it fruit at the best of its possibilities?
As big as you could possibly go. But 25 gallon should be sufficient for a few years anyway
Avocados roots are too vigorous to be grown long term in a pot they will become root bound quickly in any reasonably sized pot 15-25-50-100-200 gallon
Figs also have vigorous roots are similar usually die in a pot when they get too large and rootbound
Really love your videos. I can see your passion for what you do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and passion. Truly is a appreciated.
How can I get some of your Russell and Simmons avocados.
I'm in Jamaica.
Sorry Georgia, I can't ship outside the US. If we could I'd be trading you for Julie mangos 😝
WOW very interesting. Thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge with us. ❤

Hello from Florida
I had this very question, because where I live it does occasionally frost over in winter! (Even though I'm in Zone 8.5.) I want to keep my avocado trees in large pots on a sunporch, but didn't know if I'd actually be able to get fruit from them. Excellent information to have!!
LiAnn, So glad you found the vid helpful. I been meaning to make it for a long time now and I finally had a day with some cloud cover.
So can she grow one in the area where she lives if she gets snow, i dont think so, maybe just a plant with a heat lamp?
@@mjperfume1523 I am in zone 8.5b as well and I am growing a Little Cado / Wurtz in a pot in my house. 6 months out of the year it lives outside. The other 6 months, it lives in my house in a small greenhouse with lights and humidity.
I have about a 2 year old Fantastic avocado tree my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day’s 2023.
Do you know anything you can share on growing and taking care of it in a pot.It is looking great and I have two small branches growing out of the top place it was grafted and don’t want to cut them off if no need.I live in Mississippi and my yard get all day sun.I want to repot it into a larger pot but not sure what to do.Have you had a Fantastic avocado tree,it says it’s cold hardy to 30 degrees.I love it and want to take good care of it,because I love avocados, lol I’m hoping to get avocados next year.Thank you.
I don't have experience with Fantastic. I have a vid on the channel that shows how to transfer pots.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you
But I want avocados in Tennessee. 😢
Would it be possible indoors with grow lights in the winter? Or a greenhouse?
yes people grow indoors but I din't here much about people getting fruit. But the trees go just fine.
Hi will I be able to get fruits on my avocado trees, I live in Denmark but I dont know what hardiness zone it is ?

I'd say not...too cold where you live. But there are people making trees fruit indoors with lights and stuff so worth a try.
I like your presentation.. thanks for the video

Great videos
Couple questions and maybe motivation for your next video
How do you mix soil for potted trees and what/when to fertilize?
This is for 25 gallon pots as I want fruit!
Oh, what about fertilizer during flower and fruit stages?
Mahalo
Hi Fire, I mix potting soil, perlite, and sand but I don't have ratios, I just kind of keep mixing till I get something close to what I want. As for fertilizer I put 6-6-6 every 60 days.
Thank you 😊 nice to see your enthusiasm
thanks for the comment Sabrina
Hi there, I’m in PNW Washington state zone 8b and I’m trying to grow avocados long enough to get them mature and in the ground. Any suggestions for keeping them from freezing when the temps get down below 30 f? Like would it be better to wrap the tree w blanket while in the greenhouse or would it be better to bring in doors where I don’t have window for it?
Thanks for your time,
Jon
if you can and it's just for an overnight or a day bringing them inside would be best. or you can put a heater near them or lights that give off heat on chilly nights.
Can you graft various kinds of mangos onto one tree like you can an avocado?
yes.
Where did that first tree come from before the photon hit its leaf?
depends where you get your news
I have a 20 inch tall Avocado plant that I grew from seed but I didn't know anything about the grafting. Does this means that I'll never get the fruit? Would love to hear from others .
you will likely get fruit but it takes 10 years on average so it's a bit of a long wait.
Is grafting the same as cloning? Which is better?
it is the way we clone trees yes.
What a beautiful orchard
thank you
I have 8 seeds just poppin sprouts..I will be putting in pots tomorrow. All I know is the sticker said Mexico! I have no idea the kind..but they are large, super sweet and very juicy!

Potting a Avocado you sent me last year, it's finally about 1+1/2 foot tall, and STILL sitting in a open water container xD Putting him into a pot and doing soil today, wanting to do it right, and reviewing your vids to make sure i do. After all this is one of YOUR kids ! =)
wow, thank you for the follow up!
Which varieties are better suited for pot? Any dwarf variety can you name for pot?
no one is any better than any other. they'll all need to be pruned.

The small plants with fruit on them could not have taken more than a year I have plants that are 2 m tall.
Hi Yoav, This vid does a better job explaining it than I could by replying: th-cam.com/video/j5WFvuYx4jc/w-d-xo.html
Everything I say about avocados in this vid applies to mango. One thing about mango though...certain varieties don't require grafting. They are known as polyembryonic and their seeds will grow genetic replicas of the mother tree. So depending on what type of mango you got the seed from it may or may not require grafting.
@@SleepyLizard Hey bro. Thank you very much for your response and quick reply. You're the best ❤
I just bought an 3-foot avocado that tree that's been grafted it was in full sun should I keep it in full sun or put it in the shade
full sun is fine for your avocado tree at that size.

Do you have a favorite avocado variety?
Question, what fertilizer will you recommend for avocados in pot ?
6-6-6 blend
Does grafting need to happen from the same tree?
no, just within species
I have a 3 year old avocado tree in a 25 gallon planter grown from seed. I would love to have a fruiting avocado tree. Should I give up and buy one at a nursery or should I just keep my tree?
Keep it and see what you get.
Is it possible to grow one from seed and have it fertilized from the mother tree if left under or near the mother tree or bee pollination for several years?
Yes but you still won’t get the exact same avocado. It’ll still be genetically unique and therefore give different avocados.
I live in Chicago do you have a recommendation for grow lighting for potted avocado trees? I have hass and a cold hardy tree
There's a really good channel called Fruitful Trees and he interviews a guy who grows indoors with lights. I'd look it up and see what he does.

I’m in 7b (NYC) and I’m trying to decide how to winterize my babies.

David, There are no polyembryonic avocados. There are polyembryonic mangos. If an avocado seed sprouts two stalks it's still one tree and it's best to prune one and let the other grow. Polyembryonic mangos on the other had will put up multiple shoots but each will have it's own root system.
