An avocado tree should be kept in a container for the first 5-8 years before planting in the ground. They don’t become cold hardy until they are mature, which happens at around 5-8 years. This is what I was taught during my master gardener fruit tree training. This information is referring to zone 9. Zones colder than 9 should keep their avocado trees in containers for the trees entire life.

Simmonds is NOT a dwarf variety. They get to 20-25 feet tall. If you want a dwarf then go for Wurtz. They only grow 10 to 14 feet.

What soil mixture to use in the container? Thanks!

I'm in SoCal, and it is better to use a 24inch or larger container. The soil should be all mineral like a mix of; sand, decomposed granite, vermiculite, cinders, perhaps a little peat moss etc. Organic amendments in it is what causes root rot.
All organic mulch goes on top, about 4 inches of leaves, wood chips. One of the best trees here is the GEM for containers. Best of luck.

@@frankyancy1347 Thanks for the info! With almost all mineral content, the pots can get really heavy though! Also, DG is not available here in Bay Area at the big box stores -- what is a good alternative? All purpose gravel? Lava rock? Does this 'mineral soil medium' also hold true for mango plants in containers too? Thanks!

@@0anant0 just use all purpose sand from Home Depot, and and any porous rock. Yes it's heavy, and why sadly nurseries have gone to cheap sawdust mix for their planting soils., Real peat is o.k. in the mix as its pretty well rotted. Those who do this put the pot on a platform with casters if it is needed to be moved. All I do is avos, so no advice on other plants. Avos have very sensitive roots to rotting organic material. Good luck. I've killed near 10 avos through bad planting...learning the had way. They are surface feeders, so don't plant deep.
