      @@Spu7Nix Yes, getting across the ocean would be a challenge. The longest you can walk in a circle, i.e. a straight line, without touching the ocean is from Greenville, Liberia to Wenling, China, a distance of about 13,500 km. To complete the circle you'd have to cross both the Pacific and the Atlantic though...

      Tom's probably not going to see this comment but it would definitely clarify some of the things in his mind.
      "Why is the GPS line consistently North of the straight line we were following?"
      Now I'm not exactly sure why they were consistently North, I'm guessing it was just the GPS not being super high quality and therefore, accurate, and not human error (I trust that from what they were seeing they were dead on the line most of the time when it looks like they were consistently 5-10m off).
      Another thing (which obviously isn't on his mind, otherwise he would have voiced it) is that if the GPS was *consistently* off by 5-10 meters North, then that 48 metre deviation (and any other deviation really, as seen particularly around the 12:00 minute mark with the road) to the South would have actually been 50+...
      And if I remember correctly, a 50+ metre deviation exceeds gold standard and is instead, silver. Womp womp.
      Twas a great effort though, I am thoroughly enjoying the series though! Can't wait for the next straight line mission across wales!

    Here is a valid excuse to tell famers/land owners: Tell them you are retrieving a high altitude weather balloon transmitter that has fallen in the balloon flight path. People go out and retrieve them all the time like a Radiosonde transmitter and have to cross private lands and farm fields. Especially if your using a GPS tracker. The only way to spot it is to follow the exact flight path.

      It is possible that the line (or route trace) was shifted on purpose in order to maintain a gold run, which is, of course, perfectly fine, since the mission requires any straight line (within reason) and not the exact one which was planned.
      On another note, If some maximum distance restrictions regarding the mean value of the absolute deviation from the line were to be implemented, on top of the already existing maximum deviation restrictions, maximum adhering to the line would be forced, with deviation possible in only a few critical instances. This would also, however, prevent later adjustments to the line to save platinum/gold etc, because most of the route would then be thrown off the line. It would certainly be much harder, possibly too hard, depending on the limits.

    • @wohlhabendermanager
      @wohlhabendermanager 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@soryusedtoblameneithernowb3714 It's possible that the line was shifted a bit, but I remember one of my GPS (GPS's?) had a similar error for a few days (weeks? It was years ago, I don't exactly remember) where it would show me a few meters off of my original postion (as I could clearly see the road and the sidewalk on the map). I was on the road, had perfect signal, but the GPS insisted that I was a few meters besides the road. It sorted itself out eventually, and I don't know what caused the error. Propably some overcorrection going on? Back at that time GPS was only 3 meters accurate (and my shown position was within that margin), I don't know if that's still true.

    • @vincentnicholson3946
      @vincentnicholson3946 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know it's a year late, but just in case you (or anyone else reading this) never watched his Norway line review videos, I will explain.
      He picks the line in google earth, which is obviously projected on to a globe. When he exports his google earth line into his GPS, the GPS accounts for the Earth's curvature, basically giving him the exact line he set up on google earth.
      However, because Tom believed that google earth couldn't import his GPS data, he would re-draw the line that he follows in a new program: the Garmin program that he is using in this videos. Unfortunately, the Garmin program uses a Mercator projection, so the purple line we see in the video is NOT THE REAL LINE. This is why, as many have pointed out, that he and Greg seem to be constantly to the right of the line, especially in the middle of the journey where the distortion is highest.
      What Tom realizes in his final video in the Norway playlist is that he can export the walking data from his GPS directly to google earth, meaning that the distortion is eliminated! Thus, you'll see that all of the parts where he and Greg seems to be slightly off are actually dead on-line.
      Unfortunately, this does mean that when Greg and Tom were escorted away from that couple's house, the deviation was more like 60 meters, and not 48.

  • @MaxArceus
    @MaxArceus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Have you considered moving the line slightly after the fact, to get it onto the average of what you actually ended up doing? That way it should hopefully help minimize the deviations. I mean, the mission was to walk in a straight line, not to specifically walk on _that_ straight line, right?

    Phenomenal series sir. What a great way to celebrate your friendship!
    I know nothing about that geowizard game, but hell yeah I am a big fan of this kind adventures, your story telling skills are utterly brilliant! I really like your no nonsense approach...
    I am extremely motivated give Luxembourg a try in the fall -and if I "succeed" The Netherlands as as well, maybe even winter, since winter is the new fall nowadays- Have already a few routes to be explored after the first mission!!! Let me know if I need to test some sections or anything else (although there are some VERY VERY steep and dangerous sections that you really need to avoid!!!)
    INPUT from the standpoint of an ultra runner, - with absolutely no experience in Wales ;)- for mission 3: -this is always very personal, so see it as a free dinner where you can take anything you want and leave the rest for the pigs ;) -
    MOST IMPORTANT: THE FEET! short version, Test {toe socks, pedicure, bigger shoes, foot care products, waterproof socks,...}
    e.g. you can go to a pedicure (I know it might feel weird, but believe me, just do it!) 3 weeks before your adventure, not only for the toe nails, but also for the dead skin -callus?- removal. The softer your skin, the less water it can absorb and never will you get things like treched feet. Later on just take care of your feet (creams,... as if you have some kind of funny feet fetisj :D specific tips, you can always ask me.
    toe nails and the blood blisters underneeth them are really hard to handle (but mentally can keep your mind focussed on the job and keep other fysical and mental pains out of your mind, but without this pain, everything is always easier!!!) suggestion buy toe socks (injinji or the aliexpress ones, no difference,... and on top of this sock another merino type sock for heat control), the longer the adventure, the bigger your shoes (swelling,...) The sealskinz you use, smart choice!
    > never use compeed, but tape your feet with fysio tape against blisters and use vaseline for small friction problems!!!
    IDEA: Travel faster.
    > travel lightweight (I think you can get a brand like montane sponsor you really lightweight, frictionless, warm clothing) Look at clothing of runners who do the spine race, or legends trail,...
    > use merino stuff as base layer for heat control, any weather condition, no disgusting smell.
    > for sleeping: try to use a hammock and tarp in stead?
    > for food: try to maximize your hydration, put carbs, salts and electrolites in your drinks. -> you can do it yourself, with e.g. O.R.S. salts and sugars etc. or you can just buy something like tailwind nutrition (even with caffeïne if you want to go pro)
    [i know you are not going to do this but still] > travel later or even sometimes go for the full night shift, it's amazing for yourself (your energy will be really high if the sun comes up again) or do powernaps when you really feel that you need it (in a lightweight emergency shelter, bivvy,...) earlier through populated areas, with a good headlamp it will be another interesting thing to see that on film for us as well!!!
    > use foldable walking sticks
    > try trailrunning/walking shoes instead of walking boots.
    > have a support crew around if you want (and use a live tracking, so that this crew can find you anywhere,... garmin livetracking is already sufficient, but I can get you better stuff sponsored if you want to)
    > extra idea for the cold mornings: rainpants warm you up very fast.
    BETTER IDEA: forget everything written above and do your thing! It will be amazing to watch, that's for sure.
    Many happy adventures, good luck!

    When it shows the line walking along the road near Perkins' garden, the line is further north, and can be seen going through the garden. You were mostly to the north as well, and when you make errors to the north, it is revealed to be farther north than expected, whereas the opposite is usually true for the south, with a few exceptions. I think that the GPS shows your path as slightly further north than it actually was.

    Norway is a good idea. Will be interesting to see what path you take, as Norway is quite thin but mountainous further up north. I would recommend Finland too. The distance would likely be much greater. You would not have that many hills, much fewer than in Wales, and the farmers would be replaced by free range reindeer and roaming packs of feral drunks. Your main problem would be lakes and rivers, and you would likely have to increase your acceptable diversions. But it would be a true challenge.

    It's actually not necessarily the signal that's the problem. GPS systems use filters to produce a more or less straight line and estimate speed, etc. When you stop, the noise in the signal is then interpreted as movement instead of getting filtered out by relative motion. This is why it gets worse when you go slower. The system is tuned to filter out noise around an assumed walking speed, I reckon.

    Tom! I have a suggestion. A way to evaluate the success of a line (how straight it is) you can use a root-means-square function. AKA calculate the r-value of the line. This is used in math to determine how "close" on curve is to another curve. It basically evaluates the difference between every point on the path you took minus the straight path. It gives you an average deviation which could be useful here. Let me know if you need help with this!

    I wrote a ski app over a decade ago that took GPS and mapped it onto a printable map of the French alps. People hired out little GPS devices then picked up a map a day later. The main issue was people resting or worse going inside for a snack for an hour, GPS relies quite heavily on movement and extrapolation, the actual data is quite crude and once you stop moving it goes all over the place exactly like your recording. The only solution I had at the time was manual editing, select the line before the stop, select it after and delete everything in between.

    To address some points regarding the gps system.
    Your gps tracker inherently uses gps coordinates to localize itself. But it also tracks the noisy (probably) utm transformed coordinates to get a map representation (and therefore your self drawn goal line) and filters movements made. Because you move so slow, you little tracker will statistically "mean" out noise, which leads to an offset error when walking. This offset slowly "creeps" up without you guys noticing while you walk and the filter needs a while (relative to your acceleration, which is not that much on foot) to showcase the offset to a point where you notice an offset from the goal line and stray into the other direction.
    This leads to a sine wave pattern of your own movement, because you constantly try to offset your bad "non straight" movement (which you think is only because of bad signal) delayed by dozens of seconds.
    It is however true that less sky = less satellites = less signal = less localization quality. So woods and high hills kill your line so hard that is impossible to rely on it under those circumstances.
    You are right in that, when standing still, the same tracker fails to perform well. This is an inherent problem of nearly all current localization methods. The filter's underlying model will correlate your noise into movement because all other input signals are non existent (you are standing still and therefore neither have acceleration nor velocity). That is a problem called "overconfidence" commonly experienced with for example kalman filters. In this specific case it is the absolute "lack of confidence" and your gps tracker was designed in a way that it outputs the noise anyways. That way you can still have the "best reasonable position with high uncertainty".
    The part at 11:11 showcases a simple (translation+rotation) offset of the underlying image. The gps is consistent, you are just looking at satellite images stitched together using mercator transformations underneath the perfectly reasonable spherical coordinates. The image is wrong, not the signal. Nearly ALL satellite images are false, mostly due to orientation errors of the satellites in respect to the ground "plane" and transformation errors of the map transformation used. These image errors probably get higher on the edges of the UTM zone you are looking at.
    Also ... some people think that your path is "always" offset to the "right" of your goal line. That my friend ... is the spectacular phenomenon called intrinsic bias. Not the gps is biased towards the right(absolute north) , this specific human is. His brain (and probably the brain of his buddy) is hardwired to first look right instead of left (he is British after all ;) ).

    I feel like a better measurement for how far you deviated from the line is with a least squares type of measure. For each point your GPS tracks, measure the square of the distance from the line, and add those all in a running total, and divide by the total number of points tracked. This will capture the "badness" of straying off-course by 20 or so meters for a long time, just as how it would capture the "badness" of straying 50 or so meters for a short time.

    seems like either this map is off to the south or your gps is off to the north. even in the moors where you had perfect signal and could follow the line perfectly this map shows you as always being a bit north of the line, never south of it and 11:11 shows that the gps doesnt match up to the actual road you took. You're consistently north of the line and almost never south of it. In fact i think you were right in thinking you'd gone 60m off the line at 14:37. it's just that this map is showing you as being north of the line when you started when in actuality you were probably right on it
    You could probably get someone to write some code to find the average of all the gps points and re-draw the line to make it the closest possible fit to the gps data. that might even allow you to improve your "score" by finding a line that minimizes the size of any deviations you made, even if it wasnt the exact line you were aiming for

    I think you could come up with a numerical scoring system for these runs. It would have to be something like the total area between the actual line and the ideal line. So if you were 5 meters off the ideal line and you walked parallel to the ideal line for 100m, then your score would go up by 500 (the area between you and the ideal line). You would obviously aim for the lowest score. One possible issue with the scoring system is if someone goes 500 meters off, but they only traveled 1 horizontal meter while they were 500 meters off. They've clearly deviated far more than an acceptable amount. So maybe instead, we could square the deviation before multiplying by distance. So 5 meters off for 100 meters would be 5^2 * 100 = 2,500 added to your score. And 500 meters off for 1 meter would be 500^2 * 1 = 250,000 points. I also noticed that the ideal line is almost always south of the actual traveled line probably just due to some weird GPS thing. You could compensate for that by not using the original ideal line, but by creating a new ideal line that minimizes the score when using the scoring system I described above.

    Garmins... your GPS ought to have (It does, honest) an OFF-COURSE setting in SETUP under "MARINE" . The symbol is a ship's wheel. Select the OFF-COURSE option and it will come up with numerical display. This can be set in decimal places of a mile. If you set it to 0000 .01, I think that's about 17yards or about 15m for the young and innocent. I just tried it (on Garmin eTrex20) It works. Lay out the route. Walk it. Every time you stray off line, the Garmin warbles at you. On my trial, anything over 10 meters I got an audible warning at the setting above. You have to press a button to respond to the screen message before it re-displays the map. it might be another way of staying online. In good conditions your GPS is accurate to about 3m.

    Have you considered a compass for when you're in a forest? That way you can know you're going in the direction of the line, but not being pulled either side by the bad signal.

    Tips for your next trip: a) plan two different sleeping spots for every night, one you are sure to reach and the other might be more challenging, and b) make sure to go hard on your first day. I feel like both of your missions have suffered from slow starts where you called it a day early because 'hey, this spot looks suitable to camp', even though you were still a bit out from your intended sleep spot. I don't think night falling was a super pressing concern in either first day; they were mostly 'we will make up for it tomorrow' breaks.. which you then failed to make up on the second day, only to fall behind further and get into way more trouble with your stash. You never know what terrain you are going to find, and with a limited amount of time and food stashes ahead of you, you really don't want the stress of being 'behind schedule' whenever you can avoid it.

    Get an inlet for your sleeping bag. They are very thin, weigh almost nothing, but can add another 5-10 degrees to the comfort zone of your sleeping bag.
