I attempted to cross England in a completely straight line. (PART 1)

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 25 พ.ค. 2024
- The straight line mission and all it's glorious pointlessness peaks right here with what is undoubtedly the most ridiculously ambitious jaunt I've ever attempted. 68 miles across the most rugged and remote areas of my home country in the darkest depths of winter, battling oceans of hellish forests, unrivalled amounts of farmland and countless more seriously dodgy obstacles. All of this with my rivals (who embark 4 days later) breathing down my neck.
Join me and my new and improved support crew as I aim to become the first person to cross England in a completely straight line, hopefully achieving what I never thought was possible.
Some speech might be difficult to hear - use good speakers/headphones if possible and use the man made subtitles

As usual thank you all so much for your patience while I edited this one up. As you can imagine with the arrival of the baby (who has now been born!) it was slightly more tricky, but with the help of my new editor (huge thank you to everyone who emailed btw!) we just about got it done in time.
I want to make it clear that the fun and adventure will not be diminishing just because I’m a dad. Not only do I live for it, but entertaining you guys is my livelihood. I don’t intend to throw that away!
On that note, if you could give this video a like to get the ball rolling views wise, I’d be so grateful to you all.
Cheers all! 🍻
congratulations tom!!! with all the adventures you’ll go on together in the future i can tell you’ll be a great dad
Congrats on the baby Tom!
Congrats both!! Wish you all the best with your new little family 💪🏽❤️
Congratulations, Tom!
Congratulations Tom and Verity, that’s great news! Really hyped for this one ❤
Please never change this music. Every time an absolute pleasure to hear this sound and your voice. Thanks for those adventure masterpieces.
100%, this music is very iconic to this series now, sets the vibe of adventure perfectly.
I agree but I'm also ready for a sequel to the first album!
He's the one who made it. If he changes it, it's going to be just as good
reminds me of something from old school runescape i love it lol
I remember back in like 2019, in august or something, when I first discovered the straight line missions. The music made the episodes feel magical in a way. Like you were brought into some type of fairytale, a game, or a story straight out of a book. The narrating was perfect, and the obstacles and whole concept of adventure was something you imagined as a kid; "What if I were to just walk completely straight from here? Would I end up in China?". Someone brought the magical idea to life, and to the surface of the internet, and that someone was none other than out beloved Tom. The there was the more urband No Roads Mission, which also fulfilled some childhood ideas of mine! Best TH-camr I think.
32:27 I like how Tom treats farmers as if they are guards in a video game who have specific patterns
They're the ultimate Dark Souls boss
Must have been the wind
Whose footprints are these?@@trustnugget280
And also farmers wives constantly sitting at the window surveying their domain like the Eye of Sauron
We do. Same thing every morning unless very hungover then it's 1 hour later on
Imagine being a Farmer, doing your daily work, and not realising you are the final boss with an inbuilt game pattern for some guy on a crazy mission across the country 🤣
Make it a game!
waiting in a hedgerow for 13 minutes trying to study a farmer’s pattern whilst having a raised heart rate has to be one of the standout memories of this journey
And needed a shit
I feel like he said he had to walk across fields calm and confident, and then he immediately did this mad dart instead trying to dodge the tractor.
...whilst having a raised heart rate AND having to shit 😅

@@dranorter Well you have a plan until you get punched in the face --- Mike Tyson
Imagine how many farmers have seen you from far away and thought to themselves ‘what the f*** is that guy doing’ but just never bothered chasing you 😂
"Oh bugger, here goes another straightline nutter" 😂
I reckon he's an urban legend down the farmers' local
@@lukemorris9857 That's such an entertaining idea
In Wales you do get a lot of military training, so possibly some farmers have just shrugged it off, thinking it was personnel out on maneuvers, perhaps?
@@DougieL I think he actually said that was one of the advantages of camo gear in Wales once.
Bro imagine you're just shoveling shit, doing your farmwork, and you randomly see someone in full camo coming out of a hedge
😅😅😅😅
90% chance its a lunatic
There is a military base nearby (Spadeadam)
The camo makes it so much worse 😅 I don't think too many farmers would mind someone hiking across their fields in normal hiking gear...
And he's been watching you and studying your movements for 15 minutes.
Every Geowizard video has a sentence that has surely never before been uttered in the history of humanity. #1 - "I made my inevitable Go-Pro strap swap a swift one, and ploughed deeper into the Cumbrian countryside"
#Cumbrian* Which leads me to say Oxford states the word comes from Welsh #Cymry- Welshman!
Thousands of sentences which have never before been uttered in the history of humanity are uttered every day.

Tom's great writing adds so much to these vids
Pro-tip: When using a torch at night, if you don't want to be seen put some red translucent acrylic over it, it will filter out all light apart from red light which has the longest wavelength and scatters becoming less visible at distance. Will also be safer travelling through the field of cows at night, as their sight is dichromatic - they only see blue and yellow wavelengths. Whilst they do see excellently at night, all sight requires some light or low light, and whilst they have a wide range of vision they only see well directly in front of them, in low light (or red light) conditions, it wouldn't be far at all.
Something to keep in mind for future journeys to keep you from being hurt... Or worse, spotted!
(P.S. Fantastic content and my sincerest congratulations on fatherhood!)
Great tip. Headtorches, even basic ones like those by battery companies such as Energizer, often have a red light for these reasons.
@@gordon1545 I wasn’t aware some have red light as a feature, even better!
Another important benefit is that red light doesn't ruin you night vision (or at least not nearly as much as white light does). So if Tom needed to switch the light off, he wouldn't have to wait several minutes for his eyes to adapt to the darkness.
@@TheAngelsHaveThePhoneBoxThis may not work for Tom covering long distances, but if you need to use any kind of light in pitch darkness, keep one eye closed, do whatever you need to do and then switch the light off. The closed eye will still be acclimatised to the darkness when you open it. 👍🏻

Truly some of the most iconic content on TH-cam. I can never get enough of this stuff. Absolutely fascinating, Cheers Tom and congrats on becoming a dad!
It says a lot about you Tom that rather than complain or try and stop people from competing against you, is that you embraced and supported them. That's how a community is made and speaks volumes of your character. Plus the awesome content you made out of it. 😁

This. I haven't subscribed to the channel because I'm not interested in the geoguesser videos, but I've watched all of Tom's mad adventure videos - the country crossings, Birmingham offroad and the recent wonderful walk north from his home. TH-cam should know I want to see this stuff but it never came up in my recommends, I came across it elsewhere. I think it's because TH-cam fanatically rewards people who post new content constantly.

I think it's probably a necessity on a trip of this length
Its ironic how you decided to get a super early start on a Sunday morning specifically in order to avoid farmers, but you ended up seeing some of the most intense farm action you've ever had. Farmers really never rest do they.
On Sundays you have to get up and get the work done before you head to Mass/Church. Sunday mornings are probably the most hectic times for farmers.
no we don't! You can't afford to when the weather is always threatening.
I wonder how many english farmers still head to church every Sunday, even in rural Cumbria
@@aceman0000099 I don't know, but I know Irish farmers still need to rush back from the land for Mass/Church. Even the young lads.
An early start would have been 3 AM.
I first discovered your channel and the straight line missions two years ago while writing my undergrad dissertation. Roll on to today and I'm in the final week of completing my master's thesis. That comforting musical accompaniment of a Geowizard straight line mission is keeping me sane right now, just as it did then. Thanks so much, Tom
Thank you for taking us with you on your adventures. I still *love* your music, and I recommend to anybody seeing this to give the whole album on bandcamp a listen and maybe a pruchase. It's so soothing and mischievous at the same time.

The man, the legend is back. I have been watching this channel since I was 18 in 2019 and I am now 23 and I'm proud of how much the channel has grown. Till the day I die, these straight line videos will always be entertaining and fun to watch.
As you've already realized, cut-proof gloves don't offer much protection against getting poked; they only prevent your hand from getting sliced open, so they aren't a good choice for working with thorns. I'd recommend a nice, thick pair of heavy duty leather gloves in the future.
The old slice vs. poke vs. magic damage :)
Mission #7 and Tom still doesn’t understand gloves
I’m proud that Tom is actually wearing gloves at this point
@@hanswoast7 Can confirm, I bought the gloves to resist magic damage and they didn't help on my straight-line mission at all.
Actually, I have poke-proof gloves looking similar. You need to check the EN 338, it is a number combination somewhere on the gloves or the package. It looks like this: 3431X. The second position is cut resistance and the forth position is puncture resistance. So in the example, you have gloves with a high cut resistance (category 4), but with a low puncture resistance (category 1).
Tom studying the farmers movements like they're dark souls bosses is hilarious

Another classic mission. Far better filmed and edited than the competition! I eagerly anticipate the next episode. Judging by the preview you will be crossing forestry brash. I have probably given this advice before: Pick up two solid shoulder high sticks and use them as extra limbs. They need to be that long and no longer (too high and they catch overhead branches). You can chuck them away as soon as you have finished with them. This is by far the safest way of crossing that most treacherous of all terrain. Trust me, I'm a pensioner (that means I made it this far without injuring or killing myself on similar mad expeditions).
Congratulations on the baby! And there's no pressure in trying to top every adventure with something even more exciting, i like the smaller ones just as much as the big ambitious ones.
