From what I have understood about this Shoemaker character is that he invented a lot of the stuff that have enabled space flight in its current form, but he never had the chance to actually go. So in homage to his work, they did bring his urn to the moon. So he could finally get out to space where he always wanted to go...
Shoemaker is one of the fathers of Astronomy, he dies in a car accident and to honor him and his love for the moon and the stars it was decided to fulfill his one wish he wasn't able to fulfill by himself: Walking on the Moon. So they took a few grams of his ashes, put them into an urn about as big as a lipstick and brought this to the Moon, so that his biggest dream would come trrue at least post mortem. So he's the first person ever to be (partiaaly) buried on the Moon.
Shoemaker wasn't the first astronomer Nightwish have sung about - the b-side to Elan (from Endless Forms...) was called Sagan. There's a lyrics version out there on TH-cam. Also, 'Ad Astra' links to the final song on the album, which uses part of Sagan's 'plae blue dot' monologue. Always makes me well up, that one.
