I called Dyson to find a service center than still offers cleaning services and they don’t have anymore but they said they would email me some step by step videos to take it apart and clean it. The videos were so unhelpful so I came to TH-cam and MAN your video is so awesome! Dyson should pay you and send your link out not the nonsense they sent me

The air compressor idea mentioned in the comments worked very well. I also used it to clean up cleaning head. This video was helpful to show me how to get the brush out of the head. When I did that, I discovered there was a piece of paper clogging the intake tube.
I would also encourage you to take the cloth part of the removable filter off the plastic frame when you rinse it out. I had been rinsing it as demonstrated in the video. However, when I removed the cloth part of the filter, I discovered there was caked dirt inside it as a result of rinsing. Once I removed the clump of dirt, let the filter dry and removed the paper and dirt clogging the intake tube the machine works like new.

I have looked at several videos of people cleaning Dyson vacuums of various models and what is interesting is that Dyson's instructions do not show or recommend detailed cleaning of this sort! I believe Dyson underestimates just how dirty their machines become and one can only clean them by disassembly which Dyson does not endorse at all! Thanks for showing this.

Thank you for posting this video. I recently purchased a second hand Dyson V6 which had been fairly well used and plenty of caked dust up around the inner bin and dust cover. Decided to go ahead and follow this video to do my own cleaning with no prior experience or great engineering knowledge, just this video and common sense with a few small make up brushes. Took my time and used blunt plastic pry tool rather than metal head screwdriver to reduce wear and scratches. All went smoothly no problems at all, removed all dust and used alcohol solution to clean non electrical parts and dried with microfiber. Put everything back together and it's good as new. I agree with comment about repetition of this process may well weaken the plastic and allow gaps for greater dust intake. Parts for this are relatively low cost now though on ebay due to the age. Worked for me thanks 👍

Thank you so much for a clear and very useful instruction video. My 6 year old Dyson had begun stopping intermittently and we thought it might be the filter but on taking it to bits there was a lot of dirt trapped in various areas. Thoroughly cleaned apart from taking the (pink in my case) large head to bits as it just wouldn’t move and I was scared to break that. Everything else cleaned, filter, brush head etc etc and now drying overnight. Can’t wait to see how my very clean Dyson works tomorrow. Thanks again.

There is other videos on cleaning the filter properly, doing it the way shown doesn't clean it well. You should seperate the filter from the plastic housing, this will prolong the amount of time before you need to start thinking about buying a new filter.

Great video, thx. I give my Dyson a deep clean once/twice a year. For anyone having a fluffy head few tips... the detachable rollers on the Fluffy are machine washable, really brings them back to life. For the main plastic housing vacuum out the dust, then use wipes and the back of a spoon to dig into all the nooks and crannies, really lifts out all the dirt... just be gentle, especially around the motor and you'll end up with a Dyson as good as new!

Thanks, very useful. Re the removal of the semi-conical portion starting at 2:26, after using a screwdriver for the main tab as per the video, I found it easier and safer (less chance of damage) to use a plastic bicycle tyre lever to finish the job of prying off the smaller tabs all the way around.

CORRECTION >>> The cloth filter wasn't rinsed correctly in the video. You need to turn the cloth filter up-side-down to rinse. Otherwise, the fine dust and small debris will get washed down into the bottom tip of the cloth filter and get collected there. And in a few years the filter might clog up and the motor could start whining in high pitch noise and burnout. So turn the filter up-side-down, tap out the dust first when the filter is still dry, and then rinse with water after.

thank you for this video on cleaning the purple filter. I had previously contacted Dyson about this and the guy said that the filter can come off but he wouldn't recommend me trying. Then I saw the Dyson being demonstrated in a store and I asked that guy did he know how to clean it and he told me there was a video on TH-cam but it was not an official video. I decided to follow your video. I was very nervous. I put matchsticks in the gap as I went round trying to lever off the filter. Eventually I got it off. Dust everywhere! There is no doubt that I have made little dents in the plastic edge of the filter, but as long as it goes back together (I haven't got that far yet!) too bad. I used a pastry brush to get in all the nooks and crannies. It is now as new. I am going to write to Dyson about this problem (not mentioning what I've done!) and see what they say. It's a really bad fault that this can't be cleaned properly.

Ideally you need a set of plastic pry tools for doing this job. Also, as already said by Jeff Wilson you can remove the whole Cyclone assembly from the motor body. To do this remove the waste bin then look between the Cyclone top and the motor body you'll see a white plastic clip (well the two ends of it anyway). You'll need a pair of long-nosed pliers or something similar to squeeze these together while wriggling the Cyclone free.

FYI regarding rinsing and cleaning the filter, the dirt is actually collected inside the filter and not the outside surface. You should hold it upside down while running it under warm water. Continue rinsing and gently squeezing the filter until the water runs clean. Turn off the water then lightly tap and gently squeeze the filter to remove excess water.

Great video, I keep an old Filter Queen canister vaccum set on 'blow' and simply air dust and or wash most parts outside [rather than disassemble]. The small paint brush is also useful. I do the same for our larger Dyson floor models. Sooner or later [depending on use and how much lint/fine dust you vaccum] you will clog most of the small air passages [holes] and lose efficency and add a musty/dusty odor.

Regardless of what Dyson recommends it is much better to dissemble the center filter rather than just rinsing it as shown. Depending on your circumstances there can be lots of hair, debris inside the filter bag which can only be removed by separating the filter from the plastic frame.

Any one from a certain age will remember the Hoover paperbags "messy and smelly" and they never lasted long enough🤔 and they would rip open as you tried to empty it, and you would pumpe the stagnant smell of the paper bag you have just emptied back into the house 🤯. Video shows the cone filter been cleaned upside down. The dirt is in the inside. By cleaning it this way, the dirt will just gather at the bottom of the cone. Dyson say to hold the cone with the skinny end up and the open end down. That way the dirt can flow out of the filter.

The first top filter actually unclips from its plastic cone shaped holster . Dirt clogs inside on plastic inserts plus it is then easier to clean , I use a an old toothbrush with soapy water to give it a good clean . Thanks for the information .

To clean the purple filter use the hard sprayer on your sink if you have one. Hold it at an angle at the bottom and spray the water through the element to push the dirt out. This works very well for me.
In wintertime, to dry all of the components after washing, place them on a floor heat register. They will be dry in a jiffy. In summertime just set them outside.

I know I already thanked you for this video. It saved me from buying a new one or, worse yet, a vacuum cleaner that uses bags. The filter around the central unit was extremely dirty and dusty and. I cleaned everything out really well using a toothbrush and warm water. Let everything dry for two days. And it worked. Before, it had said it was charged though it only ran two strokes before saying the battery was dead again. Thank you again so much.

This was recommended to me by my physical therapist. I have a very bad back and cannot deal with
heavy canister or uprights. This Dyson V6 very lightweight, the head maneuvers around and into the
smallest areas, and the accessories just pop in and out like a kids toy. Wonderful design.

To avoid invalidating the warranty by taking the filter off, just take the small filter and bin off and clean as per this video , and then take it outside and tap the filter on a flat surface, not much force is needed, just gentle tapping and lots of the fine dust comes out in a pile, just keep doing it until it stops releasing the dust and give it a good blow 😜 to just get the small amount that remains off. Warranty isn't affected and you don't risk breaking it..unless you bang it too hard of course 😜

Hey the bin can be a bit finicky to put on and off I figured out a fast easy and damage free way of putting it back on , so you place the empty bin on a table or the kitchen counter , then you aim the front notches up when you firmly press down the unit clicks perfectly into place :) super easy and simple method hope that helps because me discovering it just now it’s going to save me some headaches trying to finagle the bin back on ;) hope it helped

Great video! Thanks for the help. One thing I would change is that the parts you do with a brush, they are much better to take outside and use a pressure attachment on an air compressor. Obviously not everyone has a compressor but if you do it gets every little bit of dust blasted out of there.

Got one and am generally quite impressed with its performance, but this model does need continuel cleaning and unclogging, especially the brushhead which tends to clog up the hole through which the dirt goes, you can tell when this is happening, it stops picking up dirt and the motor sound gets noticeably louder. Have to agree that some of the plastics used do feel a bit "brittle", so be careful taking it apart, it obviously was designed not to be.

Note: Once the top filter is removed, the outer covering (the purple and white mesh), shown at 37 seconds is removable with a small screwdriver. It’s essential to do this every few months as the internal structure holds onto a massive amount of dirt, plus when you rinse the filter gauze this dirt gets wet and never really dries. You’ll be surprised how much it hangs onto.

My god, what a helpful vid, and kudos to Bob Pritchard and Colin Banes for the nudges to go further in the comments. Colin's suggestion to use a small screwdriver to wedge open the top filter revealed that it was 2/5 filled with sludge. That's two fifths! I actually checked the original instruction manual to make sure it didn't indicate that step. Nooooo, and it must take quite a toll on the motor through overheating, I was having trouble with thermal cutoffs.

Thanks for the video as it helped a lot. I have 2 of these stick vacuums and needed to do a thorough cleaning on both. Once I had it open, I shook and slapped it - got a lot more caked on dirt off. I did try to go further to get the post motor filter but had difficulty taking the back off so didn’t bother for now. PS. We did order a battery from Dyson thru service trouble-shooting…it was very expensive ($150) but ordered another from Amazon last year at a reasonable cost. ($50) thanks again.

Thanks for the explanation! Small tip: If you don't want to open the internal filter (with the screwdriver), I found you can clean it quite effectively by just blowing through the filter. Preferably outside ;-)

Driven mad with frustration with all the pulsing and trying with all the "bits" with no success so far - but was SO glad to find this clear, step by step video. This is the sort of thing Dyson should be including as a matter of course - after all these are not cheap vacuums (and there are other more efficient ones available nowadays).
