  • Andrew Gonzalez performs the Gavottes I and II from Bach's Cello Suite no. 6 in D, BWV 1012, on a "violoncello da spalla, " which there is evidence to suggest may have been written for this instrument by Bach himself.
    At the time of production this is one of the first professional audio/video recordings of violoncello da spalla in the United States.

    As the maker of Andrew's violoncello da spalla, I must say that I am giddy with delight and awestruck by Andrew's performance. Bravo!

      Tell me about the tailpiece and fingerboard there. Is that inlaid ebony/darker wood on a maple back? Or painted/stained maple? The edges look like a flamed maple. The whole effect is rather spectacular.

      This is a bit late, but as the audio engineer that recorded Andrew playing the instrument you made for him, I am so happy I had the chance to. This session was so much fun to work on and to be able to hear, in person, such a unique instrument and be able to capture it was one of my highlights of this particular season.

      @@Neil-wp8nb Better late than never for a reply. Andrew's instrument actually has separate veneers for the fingerboard and tailpiece - katalox (aka Mexican ebony--very dark brown) bordered by flamed maple. Most of my fingerboards and tailpieces are, in fact, all maple with a "frame" created by etching and a darker stain treatment on the centers.

    That was sublime. The instrument was mellow and sweet. It had a beautiful voice but fooled me into thinking there was a string section accompanying. Thank you. Liked.

    That five-stringed Instrument is also called the "Viola Pomposa".

    Is this similar to a "tenor violin" (low note G)?

    • @L3French
      @L3French 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Similar, but the tenor is usually played vertically.

    You know, evidence besides the fact that the suites include passages in thumb position... doesn't look like that's possible on that thing...

    • @VyseLegendaire
      @VyseLegendaire 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      that's not accurate, that is a 5-string instrument with a high E string like a 5-string violin but tuned down an octave. Dmitry also makes a 4 string type.

    • @L3French
      @L3French 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Instruments of this size and range are in that awkward area where it's uncertain whether it's more comfortable to play vertically or horizontally, so it's possible that the instrument Bach wrote the 6th suite for was essentially identical to this one but played vertically. For an example, look at the tenor violin from the Violin Octet (the tenor only has the top 4 strings, whereas this includes a low c).
