    I see there are many people confused about the instrument he is using. Here are some informations:
    The violoncello da spalla, known informally as the cello da spalla, is a small cello played braced against the shoulder.
    The violoncello da spalla was designed to be played by violinists, who have limited experience playing instruments such as the viola da gamba or cello, which are held in a vertical position fixed between legs. The viola da spalla is held on the shoulder and chest, and is larger than the viola.
    There are also numerous instances of suites, serenades, divertimenti, and cassations that begin and/or end with marches. If these marches were to get the players in or out, the bass lines could have been played on these instruments, as it is possible to play the while walking as one can't do with a standard cello.
    It is a small instrument, about the size of a modern 1/10 size cello, that is tuned to C, G, d, a, e' (i.e. like a cello with an additional string on the treble side that is tuned to e', which is an octave lower than the e” string on a violin).
    Possible use by Bach
    Because of the variety in terminology used in the eighteenth century, it can be difficult now to determine exactly what instrument was intended in specific instances. The terms "violoncello da spalla" and "viola da spalla" tend to appear in theoretical works rather than as instrument designations from composers. However, it is possible that J. S. Bach, and perhaps other composers, might have intended the violoncello da spalla in cases where the "violoncello piccolo" is specified. This term, "violoncello piccolo", features in many of the Bach cantatas, with the parts written in a variety of clefs (bass, tenor, alto and soprano). The variety of clefs has been taken as a representation of the instrument's relatively wide range. The five-string version of the instrument may have been what Bach had in mind for performing his Cello Suite No. 6 (which presents many technical problems on a four-string cello).

      You're right. I assume that viola da spalla as a historic instrument sui generis more or less per definitionem is stringed with gut strings. I wonder how they manage to match the tuning pitch of 443 or higher in a modern orchestra.

    • @borisbrinkmann
      @borisbrinkmann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@severussnape6886 Somehow it is for sure... but I always assumed that the sound of an instrument is sharper than intended by it's inventors, when tuned higher than it's 'normal', adaequate pitch. For instance, Paganini wrote the orchestral parts of his 1st violin concerto in E flat major while he himself was playing in D major, because he tuned his violin half a tone higher, in purpose of achieving a more brillant quality of tone... The same did Mozart with the viola part of his 'Sinfonia concertante', in purpose of equaling the sound difference between the solo viola and the solo violin, what is the opposite of what we today think is the idea of the piece...

      Reminds me of a time I went into a music store and asked for baritone ukulele strings. The guy looked at me funny, but once he realized I wasn't joking, he confided in me that his boss would sometimes send spies into the store to ask for some hilariously non-existent item, like "trombone strings." The idea was to see how employees deal with pathetic customers. I explained to him that yes, baritone ukuleles do exist. I should have added that it was a good thing I was not a spy, since he just revealed to me that he didn't know there was such a thing as a baritone ukulele.

    Is the piece really intended for this instrument? I barely know Boccherini's music, so I'm asking. I'll probably look it up more.

    What my three year old looks like when she tries to play daddy’s violin...
    But seriously, beautifully done!

    Now you know that paul mccarteny was really playing a violoncello da spallawith a pick instead of a an electric bass with a insanely short lace.

    Does somenone know to what piece the intro's music belong? I guess it must be some 20th century composer but I'm so confused...

    seeing th instrument in action makes a lot of sense. It lacks the depth of the full-sized cello but it allows the player to move around, making it easier to lead an orchestra the way violinists and pianists sometimes do when they play concerti with chamber orchestras.
