I am a older, amateur cello player who must give up my instrument because I cannot raise my right shoulder. I played in a string quartet and string orchestra but had to stop last year. I think the violoncello da spalla would allow me to continue playing as I am comfortable with lower movements, under shoulder level, allowing bowing. Can you contact me and tell me what an entry level instrument would cost. I’m in Canada.

It's the same tuning as a 5 String Violin but an Octave Lower

Like a cello with an additional e' string

@@badiarov Anything written for Violin can also be played on Violoncello da Spalla sounding an Octave Lower than written.

@@badiarov A Cello Bow might work too

Now that good quality octave strings allow for lowering the viola's register to the cello's (some sets even work down to a 14" viola or 4/4 violin), it might be fairer to compare the sound of the violoncello da spalla directly to a similar quality octave string viola?
While the octave strings are costly compared to what more violin and viola players will use, the comfort and cost of the instrument are much better to them. It's then all about the sound quality of the larger instrument and the way it's played.
A viola being built for the specific purpose of being an octave viola (I am curious for the 5 string setup that ads a string above the cello's range) might achieve even better sound quality from a slightly thicker and wider body.
I don't doubt that the larger body of the violoncello da spalla will benefit pure cello piece, but it seems more of a trade-off than it used to be now that octave strings are more accessible.

1:33 yeah, the beauty of the violoncello da spalla is the presence of 5 strings tuned in fifths. A 4-stringer violoncello da spalla would be an inferior da spalla in my books! 🤣 No disrespect intended to those that prefer their VDS's with 4 strings. 🤗

    Cello Da Spalla = C G D A E (Fifth Above The Cello)
    Cellin Da Spalla = G D A E B (Fourth Below The Violin)
    Viola Da Spalla = C G D A E (Tuned Like a Violin)
    Violin Da Spalla = G D A E B (Fifth Above The Violin)
