Dr. Doug, I wish you could put teams all across the country who have the same interests as you. I can't find anyone who thinks like you about osteoporosis and who take the time to explain things. If you would think about doing seminars (san antonio). I would definitely be there.
Thank you for your kind words! I'm glad to hear that my approach resonates with you. I love the idea of having teams across the country to share this information more widely. Seminars in different locations, including San Antonio, could be a great way to connect and share knowledge. Stay tuned for updates, and thank you for your support!
I wish they'd do a study with a group who is taking the fortibone/collagen supplement and the control group adds the equivalent of protein to see how they compare.
I started taking this collagen supplement when you first introduced it many months ago. I had questions about it so I called company and the people that answer the phone are extremely educated on their product, very helpful and I was totally impressed! So many collagens out there but this one has the verisol, fortibone, fortigel and others don’t.
I'm so glad to hear you've had a positive experience with the collagen supplement and that the company has been so helpful! Thanks for sharing your experience-this kind of feedback is incredibly valuable!
What exactly is in the Fortibone product? Can you discuss other collagen peptide products, because there seem to be so many on the market touting various benefits? Is there evidence for those? And, what should a consumer look for in an edible collagen product?

🛑 My concern about this Algae Cal Collagen Complete is, it contains Strontium… Copied: “Strontium in collagen is considered not good because it can disrupt the normal structure and function of bone by replacing calcium in the bone mineral, potentially leading to weaker bones, especially when present in excessive amounts; this can affect the collagen matrix within the bone, impacting its strength and flexibility, and potentially increasing the risk of fractures.” 🤔
Dr. DOUG....very compelling podcast. But concerns me about their failure to state whether they do careful scrutiny of allergens from the manufacturing perspective. An email from them did not allay our worries. Your response hinges on whether we can use this product or not. Thanks for your time Richard 🎉🎉
Thank you for sharing this concern, Richard! Ensuring product safety, especially regarding allergens, is crucial. While I don’t have access to specific manufacturing practices, I’d suggest reaching out directly to the company’s quality control or customer service team to ask about their allergen protocols and testing standards. They should be able to provide you with details on any measures taken to prevent cross-contamination, giving you clearer insight into whether the product is safe for you!
@Dr_DougLucas DD - Hey, thanks for taking the time to respond- we did communicate with them, but alas, did not alleviate our worries, as they cannot verify it's manufacturing facilities. I just wanted to reiterate that, as I think it's important and I think you do as well, with patient support number one. Thanks again for all of your help and support. Richard
DD - one more comment- they should clarify this on the label and website. Here's what people want to hear: WE have DEDICATED machinery or facilities for each product, eliminating all potential sources of contamination. I know, not in our lifetime! FWIW- There is a company we use for another product that DOES resolve this issue. Apologies for my verbose emails....
Thank you for reviewing Fortibone. In Canada, we have CanPrev who makes collagen products, one is bone specific using Fortibone. It also includes Vit D, K2, some calcium and magnesium. I alternate between that and their Joint & Cartilage product cause I feel that I need both. .My joints were not having it when I started working out again.
@@betsywilkes7952 When I found this product I was already supplementing with D3, K2, magnesium separately and a bit of calcium in my multi. What I do now is on the days that take the Bone Collagen, I just don't take the D3, K2 and magnesium capsules even though the amount of D3 and magnesium is a bit lower than what I take as capsules. I still take the multi everyday though. I don't know if this is a valid or effective strategy but it's what I do for myself.

Were the studies done by the manufacturers of the products. If so they could be biased. Also, I ‘ve heard counter arguments for using collagen to create collagen in the body because, of course, the collagen will be broken up into amino acids in the digestive tract and will not necessarily be used built back up into collagen in the body but may be used instead to make proteins for other priorities in the body.
My bone density increased slightly between the two tests I had. Could be collegen. But also k2-7, K2-4, cod liver oil, low carb lifestyle. Hard to say.
Yes and no. Collagen is always like 50-60% glycine and proline. While these are used in various function, the main one is new collagen protein. And the body using it fir something different based on priority also doesn't seem to be a bad idea. Let's say it decides to heal a critical wound first before using it to strengthen a bone.
The company the doctor is promoting added Fortibone to their collagen peptides. Fortibone is a a proprietary formula that Gelita AG formulated years ago. I have recently seen it added to two other brands of collagen sold in the United States.

I believe sunlight exposure is more important than anything we eat, when it comes to bone health, actually health in general! Look into Robert Otto Becker's work! The thing about sunlight is that it is free and that doesn't sell you on a product.
Jack Kruse, a neurosurgeon, just did an interesting talk on GutHealth gurus about the importance of sun exposure for everything, even the microbiome. But he says morning sun is critical.
@@BadAssElf810 Yes, morning sun is the best because of the red, infrared and UV rays! The thousands of different wave lengths are critical information for every hormonal/biochemical process in the body. A lot of misconception around diet and exercise, is that without the information from natural sunlight, the body doesn't know what to do with those inputs. Also, fake light-aka leds, lcds, RFs, Microwaves from wi-fi and cellular devices, all interfere with our biochemistry. There is pubmed research that shows artificial light at night (ALAN) causes brittle bones.I'm familiar with Dr. Jack Kruse, he is very good at connecting all the dots and explaining it in a technical fashion!
I have been using Native Path Bone Health Collagen Peptides that has 5 g of Fortibone and 2.5 g of Verisol. I was already taking it and my doctor pressured me to start taking Foxomax again and I have been using both for almost a year. Hope that is OK. I am 66 with severe osteoporosis.

@smcdonald9991 I looked at the one in Costco you had suggested, but it didn't have the type 2, which is what's needed for joint pain. They did have a supplement (small tablet) that was just collagen type 2, so I picked those up to try. High hopes! Ha ha
@juliahello6673 I don't think that's true. First, it's not hard to break it down, just harder that other proteins. Unless you have ruined your stomach ph, it should be fine. Just make homemade bone broth with the natural parts of the animal that are rich in collagen like oxtail, pork hocks, pork feet, cattle feet, soup bones... with onion, garlic, carrots and celery and spices. Simmer for minimum of 12 hours. Strain. Store in glass jar in the fridge. Consume 4-6 cups daily by warming it up and drinking it. It improves hair growth, skin, joints, vision and bone health. I have been taking the Bulk Barn collegen about 8 years now. Age 67. About 4 years ago I was carrying things down a ramp and hit black ice. Next thing I was on the ground staring at the sun. Drink well water instead of chlorine and floride. Protein makes up a lot of protein, which is missing on the semi vegan death diets like My Plate or the old food pyramid.

Fortibone has a proven track record of supporting bone health, especially in cases of osteopenia and osteoporosis, while Verisol and Fortigel have other uses . There is absolutely no evidence that collagen helps with osteoporosis ( fortigel, verisol), as the doctor mentioned in previous videos, BUT there is ONLY one collagen ingredient that has been TESTED AND PROVEN to help with osteoporosis and it is called "Fortibone" so look for collagen containing Fortibone. I add ACV to my bone broth. What does ACV do in bone broth? Adding apple cider vinegar to bone broth can help to extract more nutrients from the bones. The acidity in the vinegar helps to break down the bones and release minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium. ACV softens them up so much, that they just melt in the mouth and require virtually no chewing.

Research has the bad habit to look only at one thing at the time, while we need several of them to get the effect. Hydrolyzed Collagen Vitamin D and K2 Magnesium Boron In my view, we don't need the specific collagen for joints and bone. All forms of it supplies the amino acids we need to build our own collagen. And yes, vitamin C and copper are also needed to build collagen. Most likely, we need more glycine than only collagen can supply. I think it easily can be the limiting factor for building our own collagen. Glucosamine (probably should be the sulphate form) is helpful too. What it does is supply the molecule needed to build our synovial fluid, which can have an immediate effect on hurting joints. But also for building cartilage, but that's so slow an effect that research doesn't detect it. I myself doesn't utilize it though, because my joints are in good shape without it, but with the above supplements (at age 76). This video was too much product oriented, in my opinion. They probably have an noticeable effect though. But my supplement list actually improve joints, although it takes years to actually do that. Just collagen, even of the right type, isn't enough!
Thank you for sharing your insights! As for the video, I aim to balance product reviews with educational content, and feedback like yours helps me refine that. Thanks for contributing to this important conversation!
Hydrolyzed collagen: Overall, there is not as strong evidence of a therapeutic effect in osteoporosis as there is for Fortibone. Hydrolyzed collagen can support bone and joint health, but there is insufficient evidence that it can stop osteoporosis or markedly improve bone density to the same extent. Conclusions: Fortibone has a proven therapeutic effect in osteoporosis. Hydrolyzed collagen supports bone health, but there is insufficient evidence of a therapeutic effect in osteoporosis. Summary: Fortibone is more effective in treating osteoporosis than standard hydrolyzed collagen.
Is it better to get collagen from a supplement or from food ? I used to get collagen from eating pork feet ears and snout, put the problem with those foods is they're high in animal fat and they're gross and disgusting and very messy and I want to eat less meat, with a collagen supplement you're just getting the collagen without the high animal fat , so is it better to get it from supplement or food?
I would never have thought to eat pigs feet, ears, or even the snout of a pig to get the fat you need. I'll stick with my butter thank you. I'm thinking you could drink bone broth on a daily basis in the amount of collagen... a nice cup of bone broth is like having tea in the afternoon.

In the end collagen is protein. And yes, incompetent doctors recommend avoiding protein when kidney issues are known. In this case, provably depends on your type of kidney stones. Almost all of them are based on calcium and oxalates. They can be avoided by avoiding any oxalates in the diet and maybe also avoid too much vitamin C. Calcium is not really the problem here, but we know high calcium supplementation is bad anyway. The best diet for kidney health in general is a medium protein (say 90-120g per day), low carb diet. The worst one would be a high carb, low fat, low protein, high oxalate diet.

🛑 My concern about this Algae Cal Collagen Complete is, it contains
Strontium…
Copied:
“Strontium in collagen is considered not good because it can disrupt the normal structure and function of bone by replacing calcium in the bone mineral, potentially leading to weaker bones, especially when present in excessive amounts; this can affect the collagen matrix within the bone, impacting its strength and flexibility, and potentially increasing the risk of fractures.”

@Dr_DougLucas your welcome .
Would that mean if we take this we don’t need separate d+k2 and magnesium? If I could skip those the cost would be more doable.
@@dawnelder9046Entourage effect.
Yes and no. Collagen is always like 50-60% glycine and proline. While these are used in various function, the main one is new collagen protein. And the body using it fir something different based on priority also doesn't seem to be a bad idea. Let's say it decides to heal a critical wound first before using it to strengthen a bone.

I believe sunlight exposure is more important than anything we eat, when it comes to bone health, actually health in general! Look into Robert Otto Becker's work! The thing about sunlight is that it is free and that doesn't sell you on a product.

@@treehugger0105 all of the above!!!!
Couldn't you just drink homemade bone broth everyday? Or every other day or whatever?
Unfortunately collagen is not easily broken down by the digestive system. If it broken down into peptides the digestive system can absorb it.
@juliahello6673 I don't think that's true. First, it's not hard to break it down, just harder that other proteins. Unless you have ruined your stomach ph, it should be fine.
And some say you don't want it to be broken up completely so you can use the smaller proteins which are still absorbed directly

Research has the bad habit to look only at one thing at the time, while we need several of them to get the effect.
Hydrolyzed Collagen
Vitamin D and K2
Magnesium
Boron
In my view, we don't need the specific collagen for joints and bone.
Conclusions:
Fortibone has a proven therapeutic effect in osteoporosis.
Hydrolyzed collagen supports bone health, but there is insufficient evidence of a therapeutic effect in osteoporosis.
Summary: Fortibone is more effective in treating osteoporosis than standard hydrolyzed collagen.

@@mcanultymichelle There is absolutely no evidence that collagen helps with osteoporosis, as the doctor mentioned in previous videos, BUT there is ONLY one collagen ingredient that has been TESTED AND PROVEN to help with osteoporosis and it is called "Fortibone" so look for collagen containing Fortibone. Fortibone is one of the few collagen ingredients that has undergone double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials. It has been shown to significantly increase bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine and femoral neck at a dose of 5g per day for 12 months. The results suggest that Fortibone® helps rebuild bone and slows bone loss. If you are taking a collagen that does not contain this ingredient, be aware that there is NO scientific evidence that it will help you fight osteoporosis. Algaecal it's calcium not collagen.
I’d love to try collagen but I’m a kidney stone former, and have one kidney functioning sub par. Is it safe?
Apple cider vinegar, lemon juice & Oatstraw tea regularly will help.

Hey, Dr. Doug!I’m interested to hear what you think about Normotim 🤓 do you believe it boosts brain performance in a diet? 🧠🍽

I dont think there is any data to support the claim that vitamin c from fruits or veggies is necessary for collagen production or bone health if the diet is otherwise healthy.
It just has been "assumed".
Yes, assumed like so many other things. One has to be truly discerning these days.
Thank you for sharing this perspective! It’s true that studies on dietary Vitamin C specifically linked to collagen synthesis or bone health are still emerging. I appreciate your critical view, as it adds depth to the discussion!
I wonder, if someone starts taking collagen, will your body stop producing its own collagen?

Simple amino acid in powder form is cheap: Glycine, 5 g /day, not to be taken with food. Combine with vit C, lysine, proline.

Unless there’s an independent study with individuals who have no skin in the game a product just can’t be trusted .

I was told to avoid collagen being a kidney stone former … 😔
I think I would be more worried about oxilated.
The worst one would be a high carb, low fat, low protein, high oxalate diet.
you are mislead!!

Unfortunately this is too expensive as all AlgaeCal products
I understand how frustrating that can feel! Health costs can be a barrier, but there are often practical steps we can take for wellness that don’t require a big budget. We're here to share knowledge to help people navigate these options, no matter their resources
in my country a high quality equivalent costs about $20 for two months of therapy. Analyze the composition and try to find cheaper substitutes yourself.
I find the alge cal products very expensive for my budget..Tell me other brands that are just as good. I'm taking supplements and exercising etc. Collagan peptide. I can't pay your membership fees every month so ill follow your videos online.
Too many commercials during this short video
All TH-cam creators say that they have no control over that.
I appreciate your feedback! I understand that commercials can be frustrating, especially in shorter videos. They help support the channel and allow us to continue providing valuable content. Thank you for your understanding, and I hope you still found the information helpful!
It’s so interesting !! but first of all I went to your website your product is expensive, and second it doesn’t even mention nothing about is it grass fat ?? if it’s from bovine ,or what does chicken was fed? It doesn’t say nothing about that. I will stick to my collagen, peptides from bovine, at least I know where it’s coming from. and the cows are grass fed

I've been taking it for 10 months (type with fortibone) and nails still split and peel far too easily. Don't think it's doing much for me except empty my wallet :(
?????….you should be taking biotin.
@donnaryan71, Are you taking the AlgeaCal or a different collagen product? Fortibone is designed specifically for bones. I think it has to do with the molecular weight. The Fortibone only product that I use says 5kDa on the can while the Joint & Cartilage only product says 3kDa. The Full Spectrum collagen has a range of 2kDa to 5kDa. Looks to me like the AlgeaCal product mentioned here has more a full spectrum has it has Fortibone, Fortigel and another type of collagen.
Need biotin and b vitamins. Plus some minerals and collagen.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with this
Its all about priorities with your cashflow if you want to avoid big pharma You must change your diet !,,!

Seems like low doses of both collagen and vitamin D. Was any attention paid to availability of vitamin K2, magnesium, zinc, boron or other possible factors likely to be at play? How much research is wasted testing one or two variables in a very complex system? I think this is becoming obvious in brain research too.

I stopped taking collagen after Dr Ben Bikman’s podcast on lipedema. I have less pain now.

Crap study, imo!
If 'randomized' WHY is the placebo group 'slightly' older than the control group.
Also, recommending vitamin D and calcium supplement - but NOT tracking this supplementation in any subjects throws a complete unknown into the mix.
