      @‌ You're going to be waiting an awfully long time. Risc-V is there as a CPU now, albeit running in FPGA with the attendant power draw. There are currently *no* open GPUs and sadly unlikely to be any within the next 5 years at least.

      The best ARM-based CPU is by far the Apple M1 Chip. It is the most powerful of all ARM and ARM-based CPUs and has the best internal graphics of any processor, not just ARM and ARM-based ones - even Intel's UHD 630!

    Does it use some specific kernel because of RK3399 chipset? Because I have a TV box with the same specs and it's great, punchy little thing... But I would be tempted to use Ubuntu Mate so I was wondering..................... A lot. :-)

    • @kettek
      @kettek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes -- the Ubuntu Mate build uses 4.4.190 with rockchip patches. However, there is much work being done at the moment for getting a mainline kernel working 100% and it seems to be going well.

      o Cooling and Noise
      The Pinebook Pro is passively cooled. As there are no fans, the laptop is completely quiet. Under high cpu load, feelable heat dissipates on the bottom of the case.

      With Ubuntu Bionic most videos at 1080@60fps run smooth, however videos with very busy scenes did seem to have some skipped frames/stuttering. I am not sure if the situation is any different with the open source panfrost drivers available in the upstream kernel. I do look forward to testing this one Manjaro is release ready!

    Great video with chill music. Actually I really wanna buy this laptop but it seems a bit obsolete as I can buy an old Thinkpad with better specs for less money. Yes, I know it is open source hardware, has high battery life, brand new and there is a great community hype about it (I am hyped about it too) but being ARM based gives it a -1 point. Many folks are saying that the era of ARM is gonna finish soon and Risc-V will be the mainstream in the next decade. Would you suggest to buy it or to wait for a better version?

    • @kettek
      @kettek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you have the money available and it suites your needs/workflow, I think it is worth it. As with most any technology, you can always wait for a better version and it will eventually come (although I wouldn't call it obsolete by any means -- it is good hardware for ARM-based systems. If compared to x86 laptops, it is certainly less powerful but that is a bit of an apples to oranges comparison, as there is an implied application difference between the two).
      And I wouldn't mind if RISC-V became mainstream!

    • @kettek
      @kettek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Extra note: Pine64 has released upgrade options in the past, so you likely could upgrade the laptop's "motherboard" to a newer version in the future (if Pine64 does create a future upgrade as I believe it did with the original Pinebook).

      Do you have a mouse cursor or anything to indicate you've actually reached the graphical portion of Manjaro?
      Also, try hitting "Ctrl+Alt+F1" and/or "Ctrl+Alt+F2" to see if you are brought to a lower-level terminal interface. Depending on what is wrong, it might be fixable via this interface.
      Beyond this, if you have a microSD, the system should prioritize booting from that, so you can download, flash, and use one of the other images (or even a Manjaro one) from wiki.pine64.org/index.php?title=Pinebook_Pro_Software_Release

    what can you use a pinebook pro for?

    • @kettek
      @kettek  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use it for:
      * Programming in JavaScript and Go (using vim -- goland worked fine, but visual code is too slow, at least with Ubuntu Bionic).
      * Front-end website design (vim, marko, node, etc.)
      * System administration when I'm not at a workstation
      * Watching youtube/movies (usually at 1080p)
      * Light gaming. Just open source stuff that can run through gl4es or X11-based.
      * Writing documentation and similar
      It's pretty broad, however the key limitation is 3D graphics, at least with the distribution I'm using at the moment (I believe panfrost has further GL/Vulkan support). I also did use it for video editing, but that was a very slow process.

      I’m not any kind of programmer, but the idea of a sub-$300 laptop that comes with a readymade installation of full desktop Linux really has me curious about the possible social benefits.
      I set up a virtual machine of Manjaro KDE (the distribution they’ve just switched to as the new default for this thing) in Parallels on my Mac, and have been toying around with it.
      Do you think the community developing this thing might welcome a non-Linux guy into the fold, with user feedback about developing it into a true mass-market product?

    My final review, pretty bad computer. It has issues with multiple things u have to do changes to network configs, the desktop is pretty old is gnome2, sometimes shuts down (mine does), the problem is that they are not able to give support and the arm version of Ubuntu is not possible to install I have followed all tutorials to install from SD doesn’t boot doesn’t start any arm Linux distro I finally gave up until maybe something comes up probably a distro would be release or maybe there’s a fix for the sd boot issues I have.
    Better q thinkpad and install whatever you like.

    • @kettek
      @kettek  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunate that you had those experiences, but that is contrary to my own.
      I had no problems with network configuration out of the box, however I quickly switched to ayufan's Ubuntu Bionic and installed XFCE. Booting to MicroSD and installing to the eMMC module worked great (also following a tutorial on the forum since I am unfamiliar with the ARM boot process). For the most part everything has been great, including networking. I've had a couple random reboots when I was running some high-concurrency programs as well as a few freezes due to overheating (while running demanding software for many hours on an unsuitable surface - aka a blanket).
      The Pinebook Pro is touted as being a hobbyist-oriented machine, with the usual caveats that software support and development comes from the community over time. And this has certainly been true, with lots of work done by distribution developers such as Manjaro and others. So it is not surprising that some giant corporation that pumps out x86 machines would have easier support. But, this gets better with time, so long as the community continues to grow!
