  • Today we are ranking every Studio Ghibli movie directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who many consider to be the best animation director of all time (even over Walt Disney). From My Neighbor Totoro to Spirited Away to most recently The Boy and The Heron, let's find out what my favorite Hayao Miyazaki (and Studio Ghibli) movie is!

Your failure was the summary of Nausicaä. Shows me that your intellectual mind has yet to develop.

Bruh, quit reading my mind cause you and I are almost in perfect unison with our thoughts on The Boy and the Heron’s first act. Dude that is like maybe some of the best film making and storytelling from last year, making sense coming from a seasoned artist. And then I was blindsided when the movie goes a whole different path. Though what’s funny is that despite it not going the direction I was liking, I still enjoyed the ride more or less?
I definitely have respected the movie a lot more after my first watch thinking over everything, but it was dangerously close to becoming my favorite of Miyazaki’s. Might be down the road, though!
Fun video as always, gotta rewatch a lot of his stuff before doing an official ranking.

Thank You Will! And I'm glad you feel the same way as me! The opening had me thinking "Damn...this might be a Top 3 of 2023 for me", and that it just DIDN'T live up to that for the rest of the runtime for me lol. Appreciate the comment as always brutha!

Hey, Chase! It's cool to see you reranking his films and it's interesting to see how it compares to the last time you did this. Also, I'm glad you're slowly giving more Anime a shot and yeah, Anime, like the one you showed at 0:37 makes it very understandable why you're reticent to check out more, but I can assure you, after seeing plenty of Anime shows and films, the ones that I've watched and loved are nothing like that.
In terms of Anime film recommendations, I can recommend anything by Mamoru Hosoda (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, Mirai and Belle) and Makoto Shinkai (The Place Promised In Our Early Days, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Children Who Chase Lost Voices, The Garden of Words, Weathering With You and Suzume). Other ones I can highly recommend are A Silent Voice, When Marnie Was There, Only Yesterday, Whisper of the Heart, Patema Inverted, Millennium Actress, Giovanni's Island, Josee the Tiger and the Fish, Anthem of the Heart, etc. Regarding Only Yesterday, that's another Studio Ghibli film and I think you might really like it. It's part of the slice-of-life genre, which I know you got into the most out of all of Miyazaki's films and while you did have a problem with the way many of his films wrapped up, in my opinion, Only Yesterday has the perfect ending. It's probably my favourite ending out of all their films honestly.
Even though you don't watch Anime shows, I am going to recommend some genuinely great shows that I really hope you give a chance and trust me, they're nothing like that one show that you had in the video: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Violet Evergarden, Link Click, Steins;Gate (both this and Link Click are excellent time travel shows, although the 1st half of Steins;Gate is a slow-burner, but in the 2nd half, it really pays off), Aria the Animation and its sequels (this is my all-time favourite slice-of-life Anime), My Hero Academia, Dr. Stone, Spy x Family, Miyazaki's show called Future Boy Conan, Wolf's Rain, Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, 86, Odd Taxi, Orange, Madoka Magica, Hinamatsuri, Frieren amongst others.
If you're only going to watch one, then make it Violet Evergarden. Very emotional series, excellent character development for the main lead, beautiful setting with some of the best animation I've ever seen and the movie that concludes the whole story is excellent and wraps up the story perfectly for me.

Appreciate the comment man and nice to hear from you again! And THANK YOU FOR THAT LIST DAMN! Maybe I'll make it through the entire thing one day but that is a ton of picks right there lol! I'll definitely look into Violet Evergarden at some point, appreciate the comment and I agree, definitely interesting to see how this stacks up to my last one lol!

I could be wrong, but didn't Miyazaki also make Grave of the Fireflies? Did you forget about that one, or am I just mistaken? If you haven't watched that one, though, I highly recommend giving it a watch.

That one is actually directed by Isao Takahata, but I have seen it and think it's another very good one! If it were on this list, would definitely make my Top 3. Thank you for the comment!

The Boy and The Heron is based on a book written in the 1930s so most probably predates Petite Maman. No?
Miyazaki’s family made parts for warplanes during the war. He has been known to feel very guilty about it while at the same time loving the art of planes separate from war.
Spirited Away was said to be a microcosm of the studio, and to some extent, of the world, or a world. Ours, perhaps. Like that character who doesn’t know who he or she is. Or the one who had to take on the job of so many people.
I am often frustrated when American reviewers called one of the most subtle and nuance stories, “basic”, because they missed those undercurrents.
That’s why I love that you have Totoro at number 1 ❤

You failed on the analysis of most of these movies and show how much you lack a deeper understanding of Miyazaki and his symbolism. Castle in The Sky was deep in symbolism.

What point did I miss? Just seemed like a kid dealing with grief, building a relationship with his Mom, and Miyazaki passing the baton of Studio Ghibli, and learning How To Live, but if that is not at all what the movie is about let me know! Just didn't come off super deep to me
