Porco Rosso being so low is criminal. Movie is severely underrated. I think it's pacing is very tight, with the only slow part being at the very beginning. I love how the film wraps up, and Curtis the American is hilarious. The scene with Porco remembering the lost WWI pilots is always an emotional gut punch.

    5. Spirited away
    6. The Boy and the Heron
    7. Howl's moving castle (I live the soundtrack and the whole scenery, the story just isn't my cup of tea)
I see that Kiki and Totoro aren't that high up in most lists. I think that for me, those two hold a very special place in my heart due to difficult situations while growing up (bullying, grandmother suicide, father absent for more than a year due to clinical stay because of depression etc.). I don't remember much of my childhood and honestly don't think I've had much of it after the age of 11. Now that my mom's been diagnosed with cancer, my neighbour Totoro hits even more. Those two films on one side make me sad, because I see what I have missed, but they also make up for it, at least a little bit.
(as for the rest I still need to watch them. I haven't met studio Ghibli until 3 years ago and have only watched non-miyazaki films apart from those I listed)

@@SullyStreams Well, since you asked, I just re-watched Howl’s Moving Castle and it’s not a bad movie, but just not a great one. I still consider it overrated and one of Miyazaki‘s weaker films. It has good animation, great visuals and some nice moments but the romance between Sophie and Howl was kind of forced and having her fall in love with him while she was transformed into an old lady was kind of awkward and uncomfortable. The moments between them when she’s young are better and I like it more when she’s young. Also the story is a mess. It’s all over the place and not very focused. Also the anti-war message was handled poorly. It was very unsubtle and pretty on the nose and obvious, they could’ve told the message in a more subtle and complex way.

Castle in the Sky is easily the best. As a symbolic allegory it nails it. Seconded only by Princess Mononoke.
Saying that should give you some idea of how highly I rate it. If I had to pick a third place I'd go with Whisper of the Heart. Followed by Spirited Away. Which isn't a bad film i just prefer some of the others.
Kiki, Howl and Totoro are all kinda tied with each other after that.
The others are further down the list. I guess i'm not really much of a fan of Nausicaa.
Still need to see The boy and the Heron.

      @@SullyStreams As I said: It's a Symbolic Allegory.
The story of "The Girl who Fell from The Sky" may be much, much older than we realize.
In my opinion, I believe that what we are looking at is a retelling of one of the oldest stories of all of mankind.
A story that pre-dates the Babylonians.
A rendition of the story of the goddess Ishtar "The girl who fell from the sky".
That may even be as old as the bronze-age collapse.
There are some references to this throughout the film.
From the symbolism used during the introductory credits, or the metaphors used to refer to such things as the "flying city" or "City among the clouds", the Robot Warriors, or the Aetherium Crystal.
(The scene with Uncle Pom telling them the significance of it has always been one of my favorite scenes.)
In this way you are watching one of the oldest/original stories about God, (or Gods) that has ever been brought to film.
An allegorical representation of the story of Heaven, as seen through the eyes of another culture.
And for that reason it is extremely powerful.
There is even more allegorical information that is locked away in this film that relates to metallurgy and Alchemy which I won't delve much deeper into here, but suffice to say that everything in the film happens for a reason... Symbolically.
(Pazu, being a miner, getting imprisoned, rescuing Sheeta, them going into the clouds together, finding heaven, and the lessons they learn along the way. It's all deeply seeped in meaning.)
That is why I like it so much.
Princess Mononoke is also similarly a symbolic allegory, also having to do with metallurgy, alchemy and our relationship with God (So is Spirited Away for that matter) And I like and enjoy all 3
There's just something about Castle that nudges it just a little bit higher for me.
Maybe it's the animation style being just the right amount of vintage.
Although don't get me wrong. we're talking like only a hair above Princess Mononoke (The half human Half God, daughter of the white wolf - There's some symbolism for you... I won't tell you what it means, that is a journey only you can go on. I will only point out that it is there... Only adding that these may represent some of the most culturally significant information to Japan that they have ever exported to the rest of the world in this form.)
This is why I can't wait to see The Boy and the Heron as I believe this will also follow in this tradition of symbolic allegory.
(Nausicaa is also surely influenced by it but meh... Not my favorite)
I hope that helps a little.
      And
      Merry Christmas!

I don't know, I am just not that of a fan of Princess Mononoke. I think it was very confusing, the main character had massive knowledge of things he couldn't have known and San (for me) was just SO annoying... but I also have a bit bias against active intependent, "I-can-do-everything" women so... yeah :D
