    Just recently I started visualizing the brace leg differently, as the initiator of the movement. You have to coil yes, but the "arbitrary" timing of the coil doesn't seem to matter. You can be fully extended almost as early as you want, as long as all the part fire in the right order.
    The leg hits the ground, all the force goes into your front hip and pushes it back. So the front hip gets pushed into rotation and the back hip follows. If the back leg isn't weightless then it will be an anchor. The now rotating hip pulls on the separation created between shoulders and hip, the coil.
    The new thing to me is that the back hip doesn't drive any rotation. Obviously you don't push with the backleg, and how could the hip do anything. Thinking about the backleg and hip might still be good because like you say this rotation is so natural we don't have to think about it as such. The front leg hits and we can't do anything else than rotate the hip. The point of the backside is to not be an anchor. Guiding the knee inwards encourages the backhip to follow the fronthip in rotation

      In this vein this would be supported by the need for staggering the feet . The impact the front leg puts into the hip causes useful rotation when the feet are staggered. Planting completely straight would put this plant impact energy linearly into your body basically only braking your forward momentum. If you somehow managed to stagger, but the wrong way behind you, the force would go at an angle pushing your hip into rotation, but the wrong way. Staggering correctly will push your hip "in and back" causing rotation in the correct direction

      Great break down. I was throwing in my home net this morning and realized that I’m (and I assume many others) killing my momentum by trying to coil, versus focusing on continuously moving forward into the brace. Combine that with what you’re saying about coiling, and holy hell the snap and power is immense. Not to mention, on camera, my form (especially at the release) looks nearly like a pro! This channel has got me more excited about throwing backhand than I’ve ever been.

    In my experience (after 50 trillion tutorials and lot's of pain) I can say that this guys way of looking at the technique is some of the very best I've found. Very injury preventative and natural way of learning the form. The Finnish winter looks awesome, considering moving there.

      Actually, Seabas22 uses more of a pendulum motion to shift from back to front. Here is an emphasis on the coil, uncoil. Otherwise, very similar.

      @@michaelcushman true, feeling the weight of the disc can be done easily using the pendulum. But they are both teaching one of the most fundamental things - getting onto the front leg before swinging 🙌🏼

    Subscribed. This little video already helped me alot and made my disc golf swing feel more simple and easier to work on. Been focused on coiling and rotating instead of setting my body up to do it naturally. Tried a field session working on this and have not gained much distance yet obviously but I did feel way more smooth and accurate because my target felt more obvious since my weight was going toward it instead of around my body. Thanks a bunch!

    Gonna try to really work on this. I have watched your 1-on-1 series as well and I'm sold!
    I've played and coached beach volleyball for many years and many coaches and player have similar misconceptions with and over-emphasize on the upper body and forget how important the lower body is. Love how to the point and concise you are. Simple terms, good analogies. Keep doing what you're doing.

    This is something I've been working on, but couldn't figure out how to explain it, or progress further. I got as far as the front foot planting, especially the heel, begins your "Rotation", but I couldn't connect removing the weight from the rear leg.
    I could see pros weight shift, but what are they doing with the back leg, are they pushing? Nope, none of them look like they use it to create additional force. It just lifts off the ground. Which is something my brain couldn't understand. Until the way you just explained it. There is no forcing the rotation, it's something that happens because of the weight shift.
    Thank you, the way you explained it connected with me, and I hope that I can integrate this pure motion into my throw.

    excellent videos! This particular move reminds me of baseball. i used to play baseball and when you're hitting the ball with the bat, the same type of weight transfer occurs from the back foot to the front foot. I never thought about it, i just did it due to baseball, it was just on the reverse since the position is reversed. It just took a while to get the feeling right since i was so used to baseball. anyway, love your videos, they're spot on and have helped me for sure. thanks a bunch!

      Yeah I just watched a slow-mo of Ken Griffey Jr. and the way he shifts all his weight onto his front foot, his front knee straightens as his hips clear and he keeps his head still. All key components to a powerful "swing" in any sport.

      I gotta try this too tomorrow. I've played all weekend and played today too and did 2 hours of throwing in the field afterwards. Exhausted.
      I drive consistently around 90-100 meters right now(which is a joke because I throw standstill 90m). Been looking for tons and tons of technique tutorials and nothing really seemed to click - until now.

    I really don't understand some people saying that the power comes from the back leg. I really just can't see it. I had a friend telling me that your teaching methods are incorrect and that your videos would just ruin my technique, and I should watch Sling Shot Disc Golf instead, but I couldn't make much sense out of what the guy is saying. But your tutorials really are simple and easy to understand, and honestly have helped me get more distance in a short time. So thank you, and keep making more videos!

      Slingshot is super convicing. So much so, that his fans don't bother to experiment, read, watch or do anything about understanding the concept. They just believe the guy when he says so. That's real talent and he's clearly an expert salesman. But this is what I teach and hopefully some people get forward with my words.

Of course you can't just stick to one channel or one video, and shouldn't believe anything without actually understanding the concept. Personally, if someone's advice doesn't make sense to me even after watching a slow-mo of a professional player and after trying it myself , then I'll ignore it and try to find another way.

      I think slingshot has a good methods for people who first start. It took starting the rotation by using the back arm to get the muscle memory to lead with the elbow pulling flat. From there I was able to move focus to my lower body and trust my elbow will lead without thinking about it. Before slingshot's method my body could not pull the disc elbow first.

      No kidding. Worst thing I ever did was listen to slingshot disc golf about playing off the back leg, and emphasizing the upper body in the movement. No accuracy, shoulder pain rationalized by “it’s an athletic movement”, and just downright regressive. I think people get excited by the novelty involved in doing something new, but in the long run it’s just destructive as hell

      @@JacobBellinger slingshot, quite literally, emphasizes keeping the weight on the back leg. He explicitly and implicitly talks negatively about playing off the front leg, while also putting too much emphasis on the upper body. Even if he’s saying to “stay loose” with the arm, the emphasis on upper rotation, as well as gripping hard, all lead to undue tension and is counterproductive to staying loose. You can’t make the upper body more of a passive aspect by emphasizing it, it makes no sense. But I’m open to hearing what I don’t understand here

    It was the "good luck" at the end for me! I used to get knee pain in my trailing leg and couldn't figure out why. It was because I was trying to turn with half of my weight on it. Great advice as always. Thanks Jaani!

      ​@@dgspindoctor Hi, I have a comment related to this, i've been practicing this without throwing the disc just getting all my weight into front leg and let the rotation just happen without trying it. After week of doing this im starting to get this feeling that i have a lot of (good type) pressure on my front leg/hip area and it feels like my hip cant handle it anymore and my hip just kind of "pops" out of away. It feels also really fast and explosive! Is this what you are trying to reach?

    Great video! The best way I heard it put is to "crush the can" when attempting to shift weight onto the front foot/lead foot. It also may be helpful to visualize "sitting back into a chair" as you coil. When I combined that with your tip to break the wall with your back, things started to click.

    Getting it, a couple of takeaways.
    1. Has helped my putting pop, back leg thing.
    2. It's a reach back, not a lean back. Keep at least 50% of your weight on the front foot.
    3. A little stressfully on the lower back easing into it.

      Yes, this is what most amateurs don't get. They either pruit after the release or way too early. Timing of it makes all the difference.

    I just found your page and content and I love it. I found it from Discsmd's page & videos.
    I have a question regarding to learn this. Would you think it would be best to do it with run up, of course slow at fast but still with a run up or do you think it is better to learn with standstill? I tried with standstill and it felt quite akward, but that can be just me since I am not the most flexible 🤣 anyway I really want to thank you for making this video! Thanks a ton! 😊

      You're talking about the disc, right? Honestly, if you throw with a properly relaxed arm, there should be no issues. But if there still is nosee-angle problem, then turn the wrist down. Basically that's it. But most of the time it's a muscling/timing problem.

    Hello and thank you so much for all your wonderful work. I was wondering if you could help me understand the brace better. When I drive my heel down while coiled, I can feel my body rotating on the braced front leg heel moreso than a sensation of "throwing against the hip". When I attempt the sweeper drill I feel like the brace is more of a stationary wall that I hit. Which of these sensations should I strive for?

      Basically both. You want to hit the wall first, then let the body rotate around the front hip in a small space. You don't want to force the rotation, and definitely not stop the rotation either. Let it happen without doing it intentionally.

    I can get a really powerful feeling swing when I push as hard as I can into the ground when I brace, and I can get pretty good distance. The problem I'm finding is the harder I brace, the harder it is to keep my shoulders from over rotating/rounding. How much power should we be putting into the brace, and when?

      This is totally depending on your own feeling. Very hard to give exact numbers. But good that you are getting the brace down!!

      @@dgspindoctor nääh, en usko että kielen takia olisi lähtenyt. Offseason rajusti päällä. Voi olla, että ihmiset ei myöskään ole hiffannut tätä sinun simppelöinnin metodia, joka lienee uutta? Vanhatkin videot oli tosi hyviä, mutta nyt on ihan eri mielenkiintoinen kulma.
      Mietiskelin tuota videoa katsoessa, että pitääkö pönkkäjalkaa ojentaa jotta lonkat aktivoituu. Vai riittääkö vain paine jalkaan vaikka ois kyykyssä. Toki suorempi jalka kestää isommat voimat 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Joo, tiedäpä näistä algoritmeistä. Mä koetan nyt selittää kaiken niin selkeästi kuin mahdollista, ja poistaa kaiken turhan pätemisen ja tiedolla leveilemisen, jotta vain olennainen jäisi. Osasyy myös se, että nyt tämä konsepti on taas selvempi mulle itselleni, ajatus on kirkkaampi siltä osin.
      Eagle ja Albert esimerkiksi työntää suoraksi ja sitten antaa rentoutua, ettei ainakaan taitu yli. Mä en tarkoituksella suoristaisi, koska se saattaa taas olla ajoitusvirhe. Ja voi myös johtaa lonkkakipuihin. Eli kunhan painat hanttiin, ettet kaadu.

    This is hard to do! Oh man I just want to come over the top and chuck the disc. I'll keep working at it slowly! but teaching an old dog, new tricks ain't going to be easy.
    One sensation that seems to help me, is setting the brace like you're going to pull a rope into your body, which works with your power pocket elbow thing you've been explaining.

    That's legit one of the biggest changes I made to help distance. Don't start pulling the disc and lifting the back leg until the front leg has assumed 90%of the MOMENTUM. Your body needs something to brace against to properly release the tension. Otherwise it's just dissapating into the body instead of the disc.

    I _think_ this might fix a timing issue I've been dealing with. I've had a problem with the whip action (feet, hips, shoulders, arms) or domino effect, because my arms have been throwing too early. I think it's that forced rotation you're talking about. It's too early, so the proper transfer of energy from the ground up doesn't occur. I'll try it today and let you know how it goes. Thank you.

      @@dgspindoctor I tried it before a game and it does feel like it’s working. I couldn’t consistently replicate it yet on the course but I’ll try to video record it and see what it looks like. Might be a breakthrough for me.

    we need a video on how to get the weight off the back leg better im not quit getting that part i do understand to slam the right foot but how to get weight off back "left" foot over to right leg etc am i leaning forward etc?

      The back foot becomes light by pushing the front foot down.

    Question about implementing this: When I focus on "jam your front leg into the ground and throw", my front foot doesn't want to rotate (because there is so much pressure on it) and then the rotation in my follow-through causes pain in my right knee because my hips/body are turning past where my front knee wants to allow. How do I properly brace my weight into the front leg but still allow my front foot to rotate?

      If the pressure is on the heel, there is little you can do to not rotate it.

    i think one of my biggest issues that i just realized is that on my brace foot, i stay on my toes, where you can see simon touches down on his toes but barely.. and immidiately plants his heel down. . i was always told to stay on the balls of my feet, which is true, except when you plant your brace foot.

      Yes, that advice is good for the x-step but not for the plant. And staying on your toes is not a must, but it certainly helps.

      I used to rotate on my toes but when I started focusing on not tipping forward I naturally began rotating on my heel. Resisting the forward momentum forces me to be more on my heel.
      I still rotate on my toes when I throw low power upshots. I'm not sure that's an issue but I'm working on it. 🙂

      I think it might be good to rotate on your toes to slow down and be accurate. Seppo Paju does that, and he's the king of the forest.

    If the rotation is forced, good luck with all that. A good throw will rotate your body. I had a good round today, so I’m confident in my drive. I’ll be doubting everything I ever knew in a few days. Hahaha.

      No, not at all. You see, they rotate anyway and if you deliberately rotate them, you are opening them too early. So focus on the brace foot and the front hip, and then the throwing arm. The shoulders will open when it's time.

      Seems like they don't, but I don't what goes through their minds. That certainly doesn't happen, but who knows, maybe they think they do it and maybe that helps then. But you really don't have to do it. The rear foot supports you for the time it gets to fall on your front leg.

      He mentions using the power in the back leg but he's doing it in the context of shifting the hips. I guess one could argue that you can't shift the hips without using the back leg and that would sort of be true but we're arguing semantics at that point. If you really think about it, you can't push very hard with your back leg because you don't have a lot of traction in such an upright position. Have you tried to push something heavy like a sled? You need to lean very far down to get the power into it. So even if there is some push from the back leg I think the main thing that generates power is the weight shift. Whatever push comes from the back leg will come anyway as a result of hip shift, we don't need to think about it. Like Jaani said, it will happen anyway.
      Maybe we should put something like starting blocks on the tee so we can push harder into the brace. 😁
      And as per usual I must say that I am a complete novice to disc golf so take what I say with a grain of salt. I'm just an old fart with a mediocre grasp of bio mechanics who's trying to understand this.

      @dgspindoctor clearly, I am not a professional, and as such have a lo to learn. Currently, I believe the weight shift in my game occurs for 2 reasons only: 1 momentum created by the run up/ x step and push from the back leg if I don't have both of those happening I have NO power. This makes me wonder how off my timing might be if at all....

Tuntuu, että ajoitus osuu helpommin kovissa heitoissa, mutta lyhyemmissä joutuu hidastamaan heittoa ja irroituksen ajoitus kärsii. Usein kiekko lähtee kädestä liian myöhään tai sitten ylikompensoituna liian aikaisin. Tuntuu, että on liikaa aikaa miettiä suoritusta.

      Kiitos! Myöhässä on todella vaikea olla, ainakin oman kokemuksen mukaan. Mä siis heittäisin aina löysällä kävelyvauhdilla, kuten esim Albert Tamm tekee jopa pituuskisoissa. Sä et sillä juoksemisella saa mitään hyötyä, joten mieluummin treenaisin vain pikkuaskelilla ja rennolla kädellä.

      Itsellä tuo suurin vaikeus ajoituksen kanssa tulee putterilähärien kanssa, joita joutuu heittämään varovasti, eli heitot luokkaa ehkäpä 35-60m. Juoksusta ei ole omassa heitossani kyse, samaa ongelmaa on myös paikaltaan heitettäessä.
      Teknisestihän tuossa heitossa ei ole mitään hankalaa, ongelma tulee vaan tuosta hidastetusta heitosta. -> Kyllähän tuo ongelma korvien välistä tulee, hieman yipsimäisiä piirteitä tuossa itsellä taitaa olla, silloin kun myöhässä lähtee. Kentällä treenaamisessa tuota tulee harvemmin, rundilla sitten useammin. Tuota tulee sitten hieman välteltyä heittämällä lähäreitä pitkillä hyppyputeilla, upseilla ja millä milloinkin.
      Jos tuon kevyen heiton ajoituksen kehittämiseen tulee jotain ajatuksia tai harjoituksia mieleen, niin otetaan ilolla vastaan.

      If you tense the leg, the muscles should protect the knee. If you stay loose and flaccid, something bad can happen.

    Evalina Solanen is extreme with a weightless back leg, extreme weight transfer. She must have some good, grippy shoes.

      She also pulls with the upper body quite a bit, which is why the leg lifts up. It's not done by shifting pressure. Works for her, but it's not my ideal.

      I hope my approach holds at least 7 months. But I feel you. That's why I try to stick to proven and studied fundamentals of sports instead of "this one move" that fixes everything and "nobody else has ever thought of", because... This is really simple, really.

    You're promoting the old school poke-n-pull form.

      Poke-n-pull seems like such a misleading name, it's like focusing only on the foreplay and not even mentioning the main act. Brace-n-hit seems more appropriate. 😉

      I am more of a Brace and Swing guy. But yea, the old S and T was a cult, that was based on an invisible enemy, namely everyone else in the Disc Golf community. That comment was like an old breath from the old times, when everyone not endorsing upperbody rotation with back leg twist was the enemy, and you had to call them out accusing them of causing injury. Nowadays the S&T community is a lot healthier, but there are still those who never left the cult.
