I liked just about everything about it from the seats to the styling to the sound, it even had that new car smell. It was my first car crush if you will. The problem with American imports is that they cost so much when you bring them Europe. By the time you factor in the base cost, import charges, VAT, importer handling charges etc, it becomes an outrageously priced car, usually way more than its true market worth. The Ford GT is a great example, it has a base price of somewhere around $550k in the US, in the UK the base car jumps to nearer $750k by the time you do the currency conversion. And don't get me wrong, I think the Camaro is a great car when looked at in isolation, but for the money there are so many European cars that you'd consider first for that money.

    I worked on the hood inner and outer on that thing as a metal formability engineer. It was a massive pain because Studio, the guys who come up with the initial design, never take manufacturability into account. The big hole in the middle caused splits and metal thinning so it was my job to tweak the design and run a formability analysis. After 6 iterations and a month of analysis, I finally got it to work.

      Underdog in terms of sales, but Camaro is number 1 for road course performance when you compare equivalent models, except maybe the GT500 vs ZL1 1LE. I very proudly own a PP2 mustang, but I have no problems having this opinion. It's a driver's race between comparable Mustang and Camaro's, anyway. That's not a big difference. Challengers and Chargers don't even move the needle when compared.

      I almost traded my Type R in for a 1LE variant of these but couldn't bring myself to do it. It would have been a foolish financial decision on my part. There was a brand new black zl1 1le that sat out front of my local dealership for months. It was the first year they were produced. Sure, if you buy this car in America it is cheap as hell for the performance. But for 200k the car is super low quality and not even that extremely fast. For the same price you can get a Mercedes E63s which is waaaay better quality (especially interior) and is quite a bit faster 0-100

    Fantastic accomplished car. I imported my ZL1 into the UK last year and am so happy with it. Car manufacturers have spent years and enormous amounts of engineering expertise to sanitise vehicles, leaving the driver sometimes feeling detached from the driving experience. Driving one of these cars is, without wishing to sound corny, an emotional experience; the sound of the exhaust behind you and the supercharger whine up front, combined with the outrageous performance, makes for a car that sounds and feels almopst alive. I intend to keep mine ongoing if only to attend Tesla rallies when I'm a pensioner...

  • @jreyman
    @jreyman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    @AutoTopNL -- Yes, the 10-speed automatic was mostly developed by both Ford and GM, but the majority of the development in it is GM engineering and tech.. There are definite performance differences between those installed in Ford's versus those in comparable GM. The programming in the transmission is vastly different between Ford and GM, with the GM control system being superior to those from FoMoCo. GM does also set different parameters in the control system, based on the vehicle that the 10-speed is being installed in, since it is also used in trucks, and SUV's. The Camaro ZL1, and ZL1/1LE are the pinnacle of Camaro performance. The ZL1/1LE version is however is more track car than road car, and has the suspension to prove it. It rides extremely firm (most people find it too harsh to daily drive it), but it is the best handling and has the most brutal acceleration of any Camaro ever made. The ZL1 version is what most people will want for a performance driving car, as the car can ride quite comfortably in touring mode, or tighten up in performance modes that (though it won't match 1LE of brutality) will put a big smile on your face. The engine looks bigger than it is, because there is twin-screw supercharger mounted on top of it, not to mention the displacement is larger than most European engines, so the block has to be able to accommodate that displacement plus boost pressure reliably. The exhaust note changes based on performance mode settings, with track mode being the loudest and freest flowing. Whomever buys that Camaro ZL1 is going to indeed be a very happy person.

    Great car, with excellent mag ride suspension in the standard ZL1 as driven here, and great build quality. The SS 1LE has this same suspension and brakes. The ZL1 also doesn't overheat like the supercharged C7. I'm not sure one needs a 650 lb-ft supercharged V8 in a front engine, rear wheel drive car, but hey, some people like to buy rear tires every four months! I do not recommend the 1LE spool-valve dampers in the ZL1 for the street. That is the stiffest suspension I have ever felt in a stock car.
    Great review!

I'm 70 years old and when I was a young man, I was taught that the left lane is for passing only, or for high speed traffic only. Does anyone know the automobile fatality rate between the autobahn and highways in America ? Was Hitler on to something when he tried to create the Master Race ?

    Those are fairly rare in America, too! I've seen more ZR1 and LE Corvettes on the road and McLaren's have been getting very popular in my neck of the woods comparatively. C8 Vette's have been sighted a few times a week too, but to date, I've only come across one ZL1 on the highway. Lots of guys around here get the lower guise and turbo the guts out of them for huge boost.

    I grew up driving Camaros and Mustangs. They are much better now than the '89 Foxbody 5.0, and '96 WS6 Firebird I owned in the early 2000s. The value proposition here is hard to beat, but to ship it over to EU its not worthwhile. Now I prefer the German inline 6s, which were unaffordable here 20 years ago, thank you EU common currency.

    I test drove a 6th Gen 1LE and a 5th Gen ZL1. The 5th Gen ZL1 is what made me want one of these cars because of how buttoned down it was at speed. However, the 6th Gen is a totally different beast than the 5th Gen especially with the 10 speed.

    Thank you for your unbiased assessment and giving props to what is a great car to own and drive. I own or have owned many sports and muscle cars and appreciate good engineering and a quick trip on the open road and rarely but sometimes a stoplight drag race. I've driven my zl1 to the edge and it was wonderful. Found some stickier rubber for wet or cooler days and found this car unbelievably capable in every arena, with the exception of cars like the dodge demon built specifically for drag racing or some super expensive exotic cars with comparable or greater horsepower tuned to perfection. Although it doesn't take a ton of money to make this car outperform most of them. Beat some pretty expensive sports cars and got the thumbs up afterward. I've seen 200mph multiple times indicated on the heads-up display and my GPSs on my radar detector, as well as my portable GPS device. The breaks are also something to admire.
    Also there is an additional feature once the mode is set to "Track". If you take the traction control off, hitting the button twice will bring up another performance option indicating " WET, DRY, SPORT 1, SPORT 2, and RACE"!
    All out race, and the car turns into a beast. I also love the Mustang GT500, 350 and the Hellcat. My M4 is something to behold as well, but I am overly pleased with my ZL1
