I do anything I can in bare feet and only resort to shoes when I have to. I love the feeling of barefeet in the summer. It makes me happy. I almost never use gloves and I feel like having dirt under my nails is just a sign of the best time of year!
Lol I also garden in flip flops.. I love them and my kids and I love to be barefoot 🦶 I love how true and real you are about gardening. Your sense of humor cracks me up. I find myself laughing out loud.
I'm so glad that I watched your video. I made the mistake of not staking when I planted my tubers and now I'm afraid of accidentally stabbing the tubers. That weaving technique sounds like the perfect solution.
Your name was definitely a way I describe my gardening too! I truly enjoy watching and getting advice on gardening. I also garden in sandals ha! I don’t like my feet to be dirty (makes no sense except I enjoy being able to walk in the grass barefoot). My 2nd year with Dahlias and I am gonna use your staking and string system this year for my tomatoes also
OMG; so glad to find your channel, I live in Southeastern Wisconsin too!!! Lately we have had such beautiful summers & I am excited about planting Dahlias for the 1st time 💕!!!
Thank you for this video! I don’t have a ton of space and love that you spaced the dahlias so close together. Now I can smush a bunch of dahlias along my fence. Yay!
I’ve been watching your videos the last 3 months or so. You are a hard worker and you crack me up. And yes I thought the flip flops were surprising. Kind of like Laura in Garden Answers wearing long sleeves in her 90 degree weather. Keep doing videos.
This will be my first year trying dinnerplate dahlias. I live two miles from Lake Michigan, in Door County. Can't wait to see how these dahlias turn out, thanks for all your tips!
I've been following for a while and appreciate the who's you part. Great idea on the supports. I'm just across the pond from you, yeah the pond makes a difference even in the same zone. Thank you for the great video!
Igazán klassz megoldás sokat ültetni daliakat egymasmelle sok helyet kilehet használni és vezető fonalból remek és mindegyik mellett karokkal szuper jó fantasztikus ötletek gratulálok tisztelettel köszönöm ❤❤😂😂🎉🎉🎉❤
I always garden in flip flops too. I tell people my feet are not dirty I just garden in flip flops lol. I used to be your neighborish. I grew up in northern IL, Belvidere, but moved to just south of Eugene Oregon about 10 years ago. Now in zone 8b where many annuals have become perennials. Great channel!!
I am trying your early planting technique with the few tubers I was able to overwinter. 50% success so far - plus I added a good number of new tubers from Swan Island on their clearance sale. 😁 Coincidentally (or not?) I just learned about the Florida staking you shared from Josh Sattin’s channel. I love how interconnected this all is! Thanks for the informative video.
I've just discovered your channel with this video, amazing as i enter into Dahlias passion lately, the flip-flop part really got me because i also gardened in flip-flop and this freaks out my friends too lol
Hi Erin, I like to garden wearing sandals too! (Mine are actually plastic Birkenstocks) Yes, they’re a little slippery and my feet get dirty but it’s cooler and feels good. I just missed meeting you at Roy’s Northwind Farm last week. I was there with Power Planter to film Roy’s comments on using our augers. I enjoy your videos and hope to meet you soon.
Hello Erin, I have just found your channel and its superb. Ive subbed..:) First of all, I like dahlias and I find them so easy to grow with lots of stunning colours and shapes which is wonderful for all. I like your flip flop thing, that's ever so healthy for your feet, which is very smart actually, but be careful! On my dahlias for some feed I mulch with leaf mould , some little rotted horse muck and compost. Rabbit droppings if you can get hold of is the best thing ever dug around plants. I live near Scotland in the UK and we have similar weather to you so I know your situation when it comes to the weather. Any way, thanks for the video and encouragement for every one, best wishes and regards, Cliff.
I garden in flip flops too, even in high desert. I do keep an eye out in early spring, especially at edges or hose coils. More than once I've had to slow-my-roll as I spied a 6 footer bull snake taking in sun or thinking she's found a hunting paradise. My typical garden snakes usually scoot before I can even id them. XO
After a copperhead bite last year, I garden in hunter boots. I planted up 9 dahlias and 6 survived (my first attempt). Today is the day to get them in the ground!
i planted my first dahlia last year. I'm in 7b. Didn't pull it out this winter. It is in a big pot. The first bloom started this past weekend. I have a teepee trellis around it and wove fishing line all around outside of it. I didn't know about needing to stake them last year so had some flop that I tried to stake very late in season. Seems like dahlia's are very forgiving. Beautiful display and had no idea what I was doing. I plan on adding more every year. It is nice that we can leave them in the ground here. Not sure I would go through the work of digging up and starting in pots. Look so forward to seeing yours bloom!
i love flowers i just planted all my duet dahlias and i love mothernature most of my friends think im odd bc of my spending habit when spring comes i want all flowers my neighbor taught me all of her knowledge about gardening and it took off into a major addiction
Haha... I garden in shoes and socks and my feet still get dirty. I'm right by Lake Erie so I understand about the big ice block in your backyard. I love dahlias and have wanted to try them for a while. Thank you for the great information!
Looking forward to watching your videos as always!!! Sandal kind of girl here too but my husband grab the worst sandals for me ever lol! Happy gardening!!!! 😃💚💚💚💚💚💚
Hi Erin, I'm one of your newbie subscribers. I appreciate hearing a little about you...and love that you aren't a professional gardener, but one like me. :)
Ha! Flipflops! I garden in flipflops and am highly amused as I just got done gardening and scrubbing my feet, I'm adding lotion and polish to go out and watching your video at the same time.
Great Dahlia video--THANKS! I have grown Dahlias for 5 years or so, but there are so many helpful things to learn! The Florida weave looks like a super way to keep Dahlias from toppling! I have 4 of the 5 varieties you showed, (not Penhill Watermelon), with all but Cafe Au Lait being new for me this year. I am so excited to see them bloom!! Your Dahlias are quite a bit bigger than mine so far, as I had to put mine directly in the ground. I would LOVE to start mine in pots, but I don't have room....I have 90 varieties total this year (Where do you keep them as they are growing in pots?)! ;) Thanks for all the tips--Hope to see an update this Summer! :) :) Love your accent by the way--My aunt lives in Wisconsin (Neena, WI), and it makes me think of her when you talk...such a lovely sound to my ears! Happy gardening! Hope you have bushels of beautiful blooms! ;)
LOL, I garden in flip flops or barefoot...but not while using a shovel. I'm one of those that comes in bruised & bleeding on my arms and/or legs so I'm pretty sure I'd end up chopping a toe off or worse! 😆 There's just something about getting dirty that must be leftover from my childhood days that feels so good! Anyways Mrs. Impatient Gardener, I saw my 1st Dalia today & absolutely fell in love. Before making the purchase @ $33.00, I thought I better read up and listen to what others have to say. I was told by the gardening expert that they are like hydrangeas. Sun in the a.m. but more of a filtered sun since I live basically in a desert. Once the summer really gets cooking the temp can already be in the mid to high 80's by 7 a.m. So with all of that being said, how are they in a container? Also, are the bees attracted to these beautiful blooms. I can't see why not but I really don't know so I just have to ask. I've only gone through your 1st video but I'm also impatient & need to know before these plants are sold out. Thanks a bunch for any help in answering my questions. Sincerely, Sheri
Just subscribed as I am also in zone 5b. I’m a veg gardener with a brand new home I’ve just bought all by myself…whew!!! Looking for all the tips and resources to build my garden in Denver. Also, I’d be grateful for anyone who wants to share starts, tubers etc. thank you
Hello Erin love your channel that I recently found. I grew up in S. W. WI (Racine) very close to that little ocean. Miss the kringle. Looking forward to you next video.
Lol, just found this video! I wear Okaboshi flip flops all the time. For me it started with an Achilles’ tendon injury. I couldn’t stand a shoe that touched the back of my heel. Love your videos ❤️
Hi Erin, thanks for the little bit about yourself, that was very nice...btw, i've been known to garden in flip flops too!! i don't think it's weird at all.
Just found your channel - and YAY for the FLIP FLOPS!! - first thing I noticed. I live in Homer, southwest Alaska, at the tip of the Kenai Peninsula. Used to garden in Xtra Tuffs (the iconic rubber and neoprene fishing boot) and ocassionally Tevas or Keene's water shoes, but thanks to climate change taking us from zone 4 to zone 6 (USDA kind of pushing that 6 a bit) over the last 20 years, I now garden almost exclusively in flip flops because they are so comfy, but mostly because I can go in and out of the house with a quick spray of my feet and no wrestling with sweaty socks and boots, or fussing with the other two (any woman in her late 60's or beyond may relate to the "frequent quick trips to the loo"). As someone who gardened the first half of my life in zones 5-7, zone 4 with Alaska"s short summers and large moose has been a challenge, so I am not complaining at all about the truly epic changes that are occurring, although a bit concerned about the speed and final endpoint. Think my blue poppies are not too happy about the dryness and heat. I just subscribed after listening to many of your videos this morning while doing tedious house work - will watch them again this evening to see the many ideas I got just from listening. Many thanks.
Loving your art works!♡..im Gardner n arty too but draw n get too scared to paint in case I mess up me drawing....now have 11 pictures but none painted yet!.... enjoying your vids my husband works with dahlias n daffodils n they have show gardens n varfel in Cornwall UK xx 😘 debbi vasileiou...xxx thankyou
Please show me your dahlias now!! Every variety you have are some of my favs. I just want to see them all together. I only get to do two of the big guys in front of my house!! I did Penhill Watermelon this year. Last year I did Cafe Au Lait. The year before was Labyrinth. 🤩💐💐
I LOVE that you garden in flip flops! Me too! I have about 30 pair and I have to admit that one of my favorite sounds in spring is the sound of flip flops! 😂 I love Dahlias and have tried to grow them in ground and in pots and for some reason I can’t seem to make them work. Everyone says they are the easiest thing ever to grow. What am I doing wrong?
I garden in flip flops in south eastern NC! I love my flip flops and this may sound weird but... I love my flip flop tan line 🤣 I’ve just discovered you not too long ago but I love your channel too 😉
Erin, I know you've mentioned the flip flops you garden in before, but I'm curious to learn the brand you wear/recommend. I also garden in flip flops in the summer and am saying goodbye to my 15 year old Nikes today (one just broke). They are IMPOSSIBLE to walk in when wet so I'm in the market for something new. Love the channel!
Hi Erin love your videos I have learnt so much 🌸🌸🌸🌸 I have a question I put my dahlia’s in pots in Mid April and they are almost 3ft tall ? Obviously I potted the too soon I am in Zone 5 -4 will they be OK to plant the end of May 🌺🌺🌺🌺
Hi. I'm new to your channel/subscriber. I'm in SoCal, garden in flip flops and rinse my feet off a lot too. I have a big project, transplanting cannas, rose bush, and a fern which I will need to wear boots to dig them up.
Great video. I have put some Dahlia tubers in pots in a cold greenhouse and after several weeks nothing. Just wondering if it’s all down to temperature.
Very informative video. I got my first potted Dahlia this year...it faces morning full sun after shade. The foliages turn powdery not lushes green. Do I need to transplant it in the ground? Thanks for sharing.
Hi, your dahlias are amazingly beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I started to grow dahlias first time from tubers bought from Walmart and now the babies are almost 1 feet tall. I put them in the soil at a sunny spot with lots of sun. With the temperature hitting 89f today, the leaves start curling and the plants look they are going to die. Are they not ready for full sun yet? Please advice🙏
Hi there, LOVE YOUR SHOW! and have 2 black cockers that follow me around like your furbabies do. Question: after you put them in the plastic tub- how long do they stay indoors before you put them out in the greenhouse? I'm in zone 7a, and potted mine like you did- have not watered them but the indoor air seems to be drying up the potting soil so I'm misting the top. non of the tubers have eyes showing yet. Thanks, Anna
I had the pause the video to comment that I, too, garden in flip flops! I had no idea that might be an issue for some people. My feet do require extra attention in the shower, though, haha!
In Southern AZ, we have poisonous snakes, spiders, horned toads, frogs, scorpions. among other creepy crawlers. I do come out in flip flops but only to water. This year this will change. I am going to purchase some sort of boot to protect myself.
@@TheImpatientGardener Hi. Forgot to mention how beautiful your garden is. You have such nice flower beds. I love the choice of plants. Love your neighborhood. Thank you for sharing gardening and helping me improve my garden beds.
Do you have a garden snake? If so, what do you do to get rid of it? I’m so scared of snakes and this fall I found one in our garden. I just can’t deal with any snakes.. I’m new to gardening and learning.. I love your garden😍 It beautiful❤️
The best way for me to answer the snake question is to direct you to this post (and I promise there are no snake pictures): www.theimpatientgardener.com/snake/ Thanks for your nice comments!
I'm so happy that I can show my husband that there is someone else out there who gardens in flip flops...Vionic, in my case. Awesome!
Lmao I’m always out in my flip flops even in the rain! I’m used to getting dirty it’s no problem for me!
I do anything I can in bare feet and only resort to shoes when I have to. I love the feeling of barefeet in the summer. It makes me happy. I almost never use gloves and I feel like having dirt under my nails is just a sign of the best time of year!
Me too!! I get my hands and my feet all in the dirt and sand. I LOVE It!!
Absolutely!!
Same here. lol I often find shoes of any kind to be binding and/or cumbersome; so, unless I'm stumping on a shovel or tiller, I'm typically barefoot.
Me too.
I adore your realistic, informative, relaxed videos. Thank you! :)
Thanks for such a nice comment!
ME TOO!!!
I have gardened in flip flops for over 50 years! You’re my type of gardener.

Just found your channel. You're my new favorite gardener! It's a reality check with you! Love it.
Thanks!
I love your channel and I'm happy to garden in flip-flops too! Great to know a bit more about you, thanks 💚
Thanks, fellow flip-flop wearing gardener! :)
I live in Wyoming. We are having a huge blizzard. The city is shut down. I am sitting by the fire gardening with Erin. Thank you !
OMG; so glad to find your channel, I live in Southeastern Wisconsin too!!! Lately we have had such beautiful summers & I am excited about planting Dahlias for the 1st time 💕!!!
You are so down-to-earth, I love my Wisconsin friends! Feel like we are neighbors...I'm in Michigan!

This will be my first year trying dinnerplate dahlias. I live two miles from Lake Michigan, in Door County. Can't wait to see how these dahlias turn out, thanks for all your tips!
Good luck! I bet you'll love them.
Best tips ever for staking dahlias...thanks, Erin!
I've been following for a while and appreciate the who's you part. Great idea on the supports. I'm just across the pond from you, yeah the pond makes a difference even in the same zone. Thank you for the great video!
Thanks, Marcia!
Hi Erin, thanks for the video. Gotta love a gardener that can articulate the knot she is tying.
Eons ago I make a video on all the ways gardeners can use bowlines. Maybe I need to redo that one!
Somehow I missed this video, but I had to comment on the flip flops. I love it!!! I wear mine as much as possible... even in the garden!
So wonderful to hear your honesty about planting! You make it so enjoyable and thank you for the information!
Awesome! Zone 5 b gardener! The weather and seasons do impact the timing of what and when we plant. Greetings from north western Illinois!
Hi neighbor!

I'll have to check him out! Gotta love a dahlia clearance sale.
So glad I found you.....I'm in WNY by Lake Erie. Spring came very slow this year. Keep growing. 🌱
Can't wait to see those blooms, great dahlia varieties! Happy gardening.
LOL~👣 flip flops all summer long for me, here in Montana after winter boots all winter long🌞 Great tutorial🌸👍
Just found your gardening page. My first year with dahlias.
Welcome back Erin, looking forward to more videos.
XO
OMGosh! You are 1 brave gardener! I'm not scared of much but if I saw a snake, I'd run off screaming like a little girl 😂
After a copperhead bite last year, I garden in hunter boots. I planted up 9 dahlias and 6 survived (my first attempt). Today is the day to get them in the ground!
I am just like you with flip flops! I wear them whenever I can. I wear them in the fall until it snows.
i planted my first dahlia last year. I'm in 7b. Didn't pull it out this winter. It is in a big pot. The first bloom started this past weekend. I have a teepee trellis around it and wove fishing line all around outside of it. I didn't know about needing to stake them last year so had some flop that I tried to stake very late in season. It is a ton of work, but I just love them so much that it's all worth it when they are blooming like crazy. How exciting that you have a bloom!
Hi Erin, I’m new in the past month or so, nice to get to know you! Loving your videos, thanks for all the great information.
Thanks, Constance!
Love your videos! Can you please mention the month when you record your videos? It would be very helpful. Thank you!
i love flowers i just planted all my duet dahlias and i love mothernature most of my friends think im odd bc of my spending habit when spring comes i want all flowers my neighbor taught me all of her knowledge about gardening and it took off into a major addiction
Haha... I garden in shoes and socks and my feet still get dirty. I'm right by Lake Erie so I understand about the big ice block in your backyard. I love dahlias and have wanted to try them for a while. Thank you for the great information!
Hi a newbie here. Love all the help. Living in zone 7 ish The netherlands .
Looking forward to watching your videos as always!!! Sandal kind of girl here too but my husband grab the worst sandals for me ever lol! Happy gardening!!!! 😃💚💚💚💚💚💚
I love your channel! I can't wait to see your dahlias in bloom.
I'm in Wisconsin too!
You are a good vlogger. I know it is difficult but I wish you posted more often.
Thanks! I'm trying, I swear. I'm just SO slow with editing.

I was supposed to grow dahlias but I haven't gotten my vegetable garden all in yet. Crossing my fingers that I can try them next year. Great video! 😊
My veggie garden is far from ready to go too!
You are more of a serious gardener than you think haha. Nice video!
Great Dahlia video--THANKS! I have grown Dahlias for 5 years or so, but there are so many helpful things to learn!

I forgot to say...I am from Lancaster County, PA. Dahlias grow well here, but they do need A LOT of water during our hot summers!

Love your garden
What do you think about Fish Emulsion fertilizer. Can't wait to see the dahlias in bloom.
I can’t wait to see an update🤗 very pretty.
I also wear flip flops a lot to garden! We only get so many months to wear them in Michigan! 😂
My baby dahlias are struggling...fingers crossed...I’m using your tips
Florida weave FTW!!
Thank you for the informative videos on dahlias!

Have to consider all things - Full sun, fertile soil, and proper water technique and lastly time. They dont bloom till July.
Unless I’m doing some serious shoveling, I’m gardening in flip flops too!
I garden in flip flops in south eastern NC! I love my flip flops and this may sound weird but... I love my flip flop tan line 🤣
I’ve just discovered you not too long ago but I love your channel too 😉
Erin, I'm 71 years old and I have always gardening in my flip flops all these years, what does people thinks it's so wrong?

Hi. I'm new to your channel/subscriber. I'm in SoCal, garden in flip flops and rinse my feet off a lot too. I have a big project, transplanting cannas, rose bush, and a fern which I will need to wear boots to dig them up.
Man I wish we didn't have poisonous snakes. I've already found 3 snake skins, chicken snakes I think, but still! Love your channel. Thanks
I seriously don't think I would be at all enthusiastic about gardening if I had to contend with snakes.
So u don’t add any amendments in the hole?...love your videos!
We went almost the same person haha. My name is Erinn, we have a Newfie named Maynard, I garden barefoot most of the time. 🤣
Erinn B Slow clap for an absolutely fabulous Newfie name!
Love your channel lots of good information. I
I garden in flipflops all the time too!😂
#flipflopgardenersunite
new to your channel, i have gardened in flip flops almost 30 years now in CA, VA and now IA but when i weed, it’s barefoot
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience!! This is a great video.
What is the distance between stakes?
what is the dahlia spacing from the house and between each plant?
I had the pause the video to comment that I, too, garden in flip flops! I had no idea that might be an issue for some people. My feet do require extra attention in the shower, though, haha!
Yes, there are full-on brushes involved sometimes.
In Southern AZ, we have poisonous snakes, spiders, horned toads, frogs, scorpions. among other creepy crawlers. I do come out in flip flops but only to water. This year this will change. I am going to purchase some sort of boot to protect myself.
Oh heck yeah! No flip flips with those creepy crawlies around.
@@TheImpatientGardener Hi. Forgot to mention how beautiful your garden is. You have such nice flower beds. I love the choice of plants. Love your neighborhood. Thank you for sharing gardening and helping me improve my garden beds.
I garden in flip flops! Baraboo & Oconomowoc girl. Nice video.
Hey Erin!! 👋🏼
Do you have a garden snake? If so, what do you do to get rid of it? I’m so scared of snakes and this fall I found one in our garden. I just can’t deal with any snakes.. I’m new to gardening and learning.. I love your garden😍
It beautiful❤️
The best way for me to answer the snake question is to direct you to this post (and I promise there are no snake pictures): www.theimpatientgardener.com/snake/
Thanks for your nice comments!
Outstanding!
I garden in flip flops too! I hate sweaty feet and wet socks lol
