Excited to see how they do this year growing in the garden and then I will over-winter them and try them again next year. Thanks for the tutorial and the encouragement to give them a try.
Erin, appreciate your videos so much! YOU are the reason I grow dahlias. I had to rewatch this just to make sure I knew how deep to pot the up. I was wondering - how many total do you pot up? Have you thought about doing a video about how you care for the dahlia -in the pot- while you are waiting for the weather to warm up - in your pop up greenhouse. I never know how much to water them at the point they are growing to around 12 inches tall. I’ve never rotted them when I’m waiting for them to sprout, but have messed up and rotted a few while I’m ‘growing them on’. I also live at 9,200 feet in CO and it takes FOREVER for my raised beds to ever get to 60 degrees - and our water is well water and freezing - so my dahlia’s don’t thrive. I found a TH-cam couple in Fairbanks Alaska, who grow in the challenges I do - and they use gallon buckets with self watering insert - and ingenious gravity system for watering (that I’m going to try this year) - so I’m going to try it this year to see if my dahlias and tomatoes will be happier in warmer soil with warmer water. I just can’t give up dahlias! The cold soil/water sure helps me understand why my dahlias almost never bloomed or did anything in the landscape. A bit better in raised beds but still not the size plants others get. We gardeners have to figure out how to adapt to our unique climates and geography. Now I just have to figure out hail….

Luckily being in Zone 6B (where it snowed yesterday) I have plenty of time to figure out where in my garden I’m going to plant them when they’re ready to brave the elements. 🥴 I didn’t think that far ahead when I was ordering! 😂🤷🏼♀️
She's created a dahlia monster out of me, too. Lol. I ordered some dahlias from Longfield a couple of wks ago and I'm doing everything in my power to not go back for more. I'll pray for us. :)
I planted about 30, lost count here in the Houston area! I have mine mixed in with other plants as well. Hoping to see some beautiful big dinner plates and balls!
Ha! I literally just did this today! Longfield sent me my order and I don’t have high hopes for them. They don’t look great so we shall see. I also ordered my temporary green house for hardening off. Prepared my beds using the no dig method and now I wait. 🌸
hmm, i ordered mine from longfield too; mine are still in the plastic bags they came in so i haven't done a super close inspection. hope mine look ok. i'll still plant mine though and hope for the best!
My order of Dahlias from longfield came in and they look pretty pitiful. Some are shriveled up but overall they are just tiny. No signs of eyes growing yet. I hope you have better luck!
Your channel, and Garden Answer, encouraged me to try dahlia's this year. This was SUPER helpful. Thank you. I'm looking forward to many blooms, I hope this year!
Great video, thanks. I see I've done several things kinda wrong... and that explains why one of my three dahlia pots has not done anything. But 2 of 3 are ok, so I guess even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while!
Hi Erin, that was fun to watch. Yes, I'm weird...Thanks for the tips...I took note that you didn't wash off the soil. I might try that this fall because I found myself having to spritz them a bit too often during the winter season...
I planted my dahlias in the border here in south of South Ireland, around the start of April, after potting them about the start of March. Over the winter we had Zone 10a conditions, so I started early, everything was going fine until mid April, soil temperatures were well above normal, then the weather flipped and arctic winds came down causing frosts for the last couple of weeks. My dahlias are actually growing flower buds the last 5 or so days, every night I put them under big garden tubs with mulch around the base, has the added bonus of keeping slugs away too. If they can hold on a few weeks, I might have flowers in early June. Complete newbie to dahlias here, will follow your advice next year and start potting them around April 10th instead of planting them at this point.
Thank you for this video. This is only my 2nd year growing Dahlias, I grow for cutting garden but want to include in my other gardens as well. I didn't think about potting those up but i will! Great idea!! I'm nervous about splitting them too, so great video, thank you!!
I thought I'd try dahlias for the first time this year after watching you, Yulia and Laura. I already planted the tubers and I watered one pot but left the others dry as I thought I wasn't supposed to water them. Thank you Erin for doing this in depth tutorial video for us newbies. It's late right now so I'll water the other tubers tomorrow.
I just watched your video about this from last year and pre-planted my dahlias today! Could you please show us what fertilizer you use on these? I know you said low or zero nitrogen but I’d like to see what brand you use.
I’m in zone 9a and I potted most of my tubers up in January, along with a bunch of dahlia seeds. Linda’s baby looks like it’ll be the first to bloom, probably by the end of April :) love watching your videos!
Thanks for sharing all your information, I have one dahlias, yes that’s right one. Bought this one last year, it grew real good but no flower. Maybe I’ll have better luck this year. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
So, thank you for the review. Now I know why some of my dahlias rotted because I watered too much in the pot after pulling them out. At least I Hanne some newbies to replace with.
Erin, I love how beautiful dahlias look in my garden beds, so I might try growing them again this year. I grew dahlias for several years, but I don't have a place to store the tubers during the winter, so I've had to purchase new tubers every year. My basement is too damp and warm, so they don't store well, meaning they rot! Someone recently told me to store them in an old refrigerator, not a frost-free one. Do you think that will work for winter storage?
Oh Phooey. I've been watering mine. I have shoots about 6-8 " high now on most of them. I keep them in my garage that doubles as my greenhouse. It's has hvac and lots of windows & light. Oh well... Sometimes you should do the research ahead of time.
They are tough. You should think about pinching them soon, and just give them as much light as you can ... take them for vacations into the sun when it's over 50 and tuck them in at night.
@@TheImpatientGardener I will !!! Thank You!!! I just saw a great pic of you with your dinner plate dahlias on the back cover of my new Garden Gate magazine that came today !!!
Thank you for this ... I have seen your other videos... I have never grown dahlias. I consider myself a pretty experienced Gardner, but for some reason I have avoided dahlias and peonies . This year I am doing dahlias. I potted up a number of them, some I want to stay in the large pots. I am also in zone 5b. But i did it a couple of weeks ago in my enthusiasm to try them. Oops!
Oh, you've got to plant peonies. That's my favorite plant, I have 10 of them. Super easy to grow. Never have to dig them up. They live a hundred years. If you do want to divide them, early autumn is perfect. One I transplanted last fall and worked in lots of composted manure is about 6" tall. I'm in zone 4b. I even have one I overwintered in my garage for several years because I couldn't decide where I wanted it planted is doing great in the ground.
Good timing form5his video! I’m in z9b, SF Bay Area where the nights are still in very low 40’s with days in low 60’s. I’ve potted up several tuber clusters as you have shown and all but 2 have a small stalk and leaves so I did water them a bit. They are in an area with approx 3 hours of dappled sun. They will be going in the ground in the north facing yard but the soil temps will not be in the 60’s likely until mid to late May when the sun is more consistent in that location. How long will they be ok in their current pots? Again, I really appreciate your videos content!
I grow dahlia on the NW Florida Coast. I found growing in grow bags to be much for successful for overwintering in the pots. Any solid pots I overwintered didn’t survive. But i must confess I didn’t do a great job of keeping them dry.
Wow just in time for when the dahlias I ordered have started to arrive. I’m in zone 8A and will probably have to put some in a plastic pot to get them started since I’m getting my fence redone soon and was planning to plant them in that area so I’d rather avoid the possibility of damaging them if i was to plant them in the ground now. Is that the best thing to do? They hopefully wouldn’t be in the pots for too long it’s just so that they’re not in the packaging still and can get them started immediately
Update: just got my 2 Mango Madness Dahlias in their pots! A few of the tubers broke so I removed them and one of the clumps only had 2 big tubers but they had eyes! I watered them and left them in a dry spot out of the rain for now until I need to move them once they sprout or when my fence is done! Hoping for a great season with them 😁
Thanks for your video!😍 This is my first year planting dahlias. I potted mine few weeks ago. Some leaves are curling down. Do you have any advice ? Can you please make a video on dahlias diseases and how to cure them, thanks 🙏
The tag fell off of the first tuber with the slightest touch. How do you keep them on all winter?! I used those tags but I added twist ties. Some still fell off. It'll be a nice surprise when they bloom. Thanks for the great info!
I've seen Nicole of Flower Hill Farm channel write on the tuber with what looks like permanent marker. She also wrapped some tubers in plastic wrap. I'm trying that as storage is what has prevented me from growing dahlias.
@@Edu_Kate Yep the marker works great but then I still need a tag for the pot and the garden. The plastic wrap works great. The year I did it I had perfect results. I stopped doing for a few reasons, including that it works best with single tubers (divided in fall), takes forever to do and uses a lot of plastic. I think it makes sense in a situation like Nicole’s where taking chances with storage can have big business consequences. I don’t lose money if I lose a tuber, I just have a bit of disappointment.
Absolutely! If the goal is to have more plants, then dividing is the way to go. Since I grow dahlias mostly as gardening plants, I like a bigger plant so long as I have enough of that particularly variety.
Oh man, I thought I’d pot my tubers, new this year. The potting soil is from last fall, very dry. I pre-moistened it, not too much, then I potted them. They are in my basement, close but not under my grow lights. I’m hoping they won’t rot, I guess time will tell..... lol!
I planting Dahlias for the first time ever😳 How far below the tuber should I amend the soil. I have good soil but it’s to heavy or dense for the Dahlia tubers. I was going loosen the lower soil with sand and then do a mix of potting soil spagnum moss and pearlite to fill the planting bed. I’m in Southern California zone 10 Greatly appreciate any suggestions . Really enjoy your videos Thank you. Debi Thank you
You’re my go-to dahlia Girl 🙏 please advise...I had planned on planting my dahlias at our new property at the end of April (zone 6) , so I potted them up, about 3 weeks ago, our dates got changed, so now they have to stay in their pots until the end of May...can I put them in bigger pots until the end of May, then transfer them to the ground, or can they stay in their current pre-spouting pots for another 6 week’s? ( can’t figure out how to attach a photo 🙄 )
Depending on the size of pot you used you can probably keep them in the size they are in now. I know some breeders actually grow them all year in 4-inch pots so I'd think that if they are in a pot big enough for the tuber to get in there originally, they'll be fine in there until you can get them in.
I’m in zone 5-6 Western Ny 2 weeks ago, I potted up 7 dahlias in plastic cheap pots with good potting mix, and put them out on the patio, we’ve had rain, we’ve had 80 degree days and we’ve had lows in the 40’s I have shoots coming up ! I’m so excited! Tonight is gonna be pretty cold, so I covered all the pots with a clear garbage bag, and tucked them close to the house . I hope they do ok
My dahlias that I left in the ground have really shot up quite a bit this past week. I’m in GA, 7b. The new ones that I potted several weeks ago are also coming in. Except for Tsuki Yori No Shisha, which I was really looking forward to. I’m not sure why those don’t seem to be doing anything. I may pull them out of the pot and see what they’re looking like. Or, maybe buy more. I need a white or cream variety.
I saved ONE dahlia tuber and didn't do a very good job, I still planted and labled🤞I started my dahlias in a greenhouse located in our 3 seasons room. I hope that wasn't a terrible choice, it's going to be kinda chilly for this week.
Yes, slightly moist until they have a good amount of growth and then I switch to watering them more like any other plant: thorough deep watering, then allowing them to dry just a touch. They do like consistent watering.
Yikes, I got overly eager this year and potted tubers like you have here, but too early. I don’t have a greenhouse or grow lights and the shoots are really leggy. I’ll try to move them to safe light during the day, but question: is it okay to pinch them to make them less leggy?
Ideally I'm happy when they are above 45. I don't think anything bad will happen at 38, but they will get chilly at that temp so a bit of extra protection would be good.
Have you ever pinched the top while still in the temporary pots or do you wait until they are in the ground? I fear I planted too early and with insufficient window lighting because mine are a bit leggy, but do have enough leaf sets to hard pinch... just wasnt sure if I could do that now or should wait.
Impatient Gardener, I hope you see this but when planting in containers, what is the optimum size to use? I am going to have to grow mine in containers.
Im getting Hs Date this year! I dont guess im too late on ordering them? Im gonna put them in my front landscape with the Russian Sage, and Blue Victoria Salvia and Nepeta. I think they will look great with the blues. I also bought some Dahlias at the grocery store, have you had any success with those? My only concern is that they look a little dried out and shriveled.. i will give them a shot though. Hs Date is probably my favorite!
Looking for guidance. Started dahlias in pots previously and some rotted. When do the roots actually start forming? Have a very sandy mix in my pots now and a couple of 1” shoots. Do I dare water them. I feel like digging them up see if they have roots!
Resist the urge to dig them up! When they have shoots I keep the soil just slightly moist. As they out on more growth you can water them like you would most other plants.
Moved to a home with lots of sun. Am excited to try dahlias for the first time! I have an 9 month chocolate lab named Odin and he likes to follow me around and stick his nose in the dirt. How do you keep your dogs out of the garden?
When they are young I spend a lot of time with them on a leash rewarding them for walking OUTSIDE the perimeter of the garden. As they learn we reinforce that behavior in other ways to try to teach them not to bound through it. And then I am ever watchful and give them a bit of a reminder if I see them stepping in the garden. They aren't perfect, and my Odin continues to kill shrubs by peeing on them, but overall they are pretty good so long as there are plants growing. In winter when it appears, to them, to be a big blank slate, they walk through it, which isn't great.
I planted them for the first time last year, I never over winter them, when I dug them up to see how they are 2 weeks ago, surprise! Tubers alive and sprouting. Zone 7B. Shocking
Hi Erin, this is off subject, but I know you plant garlic. I planted bulbs for the first time last fall. I’m in southern Illinois, zone 6 and so far no activity. Did I plant too deep? I expected some growth by now. Thanks for your expertise! And BTW, I love your new BIG concrete pot. Anxious to see what you plant in it!!🌿🌺🌷
I'm in zone 7b. Since the days are warm and there is a tiny chance of frost still, can I put my dahlias out now & cover my pots at night with plastic bags?
So I potted mine up weeks ago buried that stalk, the directions from long field has 1and a half depth for stalk ,left them outside .water them everyday ,are they done for!
I didn't over winter very well and ended up with alot of moldy dust. The dahlia tubers were squishy when I put them away. Did they have a chance if I put them away properly?
So I need some more Dahlia help. I got two more in the mail. Vassio Meggos. Both of them came in with ZERO eyes and the main stem broken and really bendy (you could see the stringy stuff on the inside). The tubers were in good condition but is it even worth planting these since they have no eyes and a messed up stem?
Keep in mind that it can be very hard to see the eyes before they start to well. I assume that tubers purchased from a reliable source are fine. In this case I would contact the company with your concerns. They will probably tell you they are fine but to let them know I’d they don’t sprout. At least this way you are on their list and should be able to get a credit if they don’t grow. I’ve only had purchased tubers not sprout a few times.
@@TheImpatientGardener okay I will do that. The other tubers I bought from them are already sprouting so maybe it is just that I can’t see them yet. Thank you for the quick response!
I should have watched your dahlia videos again. I made a beginners mistake and planted tubers I ordered online too early on 4/14. I garden in zone 7a. I knew may frost date was not until 4/20 but it was such a beautiful day and they sent them to me. Now what do I do? Should I dig them up and “pot them up” or continue and see what happens?
@@TheImpatientGardener Thanks for responding but I may not have been very clear. I planted the tubers in the garden on 4/14. Since then the nighttime temperatures have dropped to 40 degrees and daytime in low 50’s it will get into the low 60’s during the day this weekend. Will they be fine in the ground?
Can you suggest a good soil combination? I'm in the same zone as you up here in Montreal Canada and I'm doing tubers for the first time in raised beds on my full sun rooftop patio. Thank you :)
For raised bed soil, I'd look for something specifically meant for raised beds (I think Espoma has a bagged soil, but I'm not sure they are in Canada). If you have to build your own I'd go with rough proportions close to 60% screened topsoil, 30% compost, 10% manure, worm castings, rock dust or other organic additives. If you need to keep it light because of weight issues on the roof, maybe look for a good potting soil mix and mix in a healthy amount of compost.
I love how you mention zone all the time. It helps new viewers though I'm old subscriber and also zone 5b. Hour from Michigan border. Your channel immensely helpful for people like us. Thanks

Ha! I literally just did this today! Longfield sent me my order and I don’t have high hopes for them. They don’t look great so we shall see. I also ordered my temporary green house for hardening off. Prepared my beds using the no dig method and now I wait. 🌸
the tubers dont look great?
@@preciousshortie not really
hmm, i ordered mine from longfield too; mine are still in the plastic bags they came in so i haven't done a super close inspection. hope mine look ok. i'll still plant mine though and hope for the best!
My order of Dahlias from longfield came in and they look pretty pitiful. Some are shriveled up but overall they are just tiny. No signs of eyes growing yet. I hope you have better luck!
@@Kyaide I wish you luck too! Mine looked as you described: shriveled up, pitiful, tiny 🙁 Let’s hope looks are deceiving and the yield is good 🤞
Your channel, and Garden Answer, encouraged me to try dahlia's this year.
Thanks Erin ,I have some now potted up and I have more to pot up.It’s nice to have a refresher 😊
Hi Erin, that was fun to watch. Yes, I'm weird...Thanks for the tips...I took note that you didn't wash off the soil. I might try that this fall because I found myself having to spritz them a bit too often during the winter season...
I did wash it off a bit, but I don't like scrub the tubers so I leave that residual soil on them.
SUCH a wonderful video, and I am a first-time Dahlia planter....looking for all the help I can get!
I seen a really big bag of Dahlia tubers at Sam's club for only $14 🤔 this video definitely makes me want to give it a try.
Go for it!👍🏾 That’s how I got started growing dahlias last year.
I bought 1 bag Madi gras dahlia tubers from Sam's other day I am in zone 8b so I got about month until spring planting
Sounds like you’re doing great with them. Tough weather to manage there!
Great timing! I'm growing dahlias for the first time this year. Your collection of dahlia videos has been so helpful!
Thank you for this! I can’t believe I was intimidated by potting up dahlias but thanks to you I know the secret!
Thank you, that’s really helpful to see the dahlias being sorted and examined.
Thanks for another good video. :You take the mystery out of these things. Looking forward to seeing these grow.
I just watched your video about this from last year and pre-planted my dahlias today! Could you please show us what fertilizer you use on these? I know you said low or zero nitrogen but I’d like to see what brand you use.
Just in time I got some at Lowe's last week, thanks
I’m in zone 9a and I potted most of my tubers up in January, along with a bunch of dahlia seeds. Linda’s baby looks like it’ll be the first to bloom, probably by the end of April :) love watching your videos!
Started dahlia seeds from floret this year.. going to have to pot them up soon. So excited 🤞
Thanks for sharing all your information, I have one dahlias, yes that’s right one. Bought this one last year, it grew real good but no flower. Maybe I’ll have better luck this year. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
I had a shriveled clump didn’t think it would sprout but it did . So glad I didn’t get rid of it . 😅
@@TheImpatientGardener Hey !!! The front cover folds out & you’re on the front cover too !!!!!
Im so glad I don’t live where you have to do all his. I live in zone 9 and mine are considered perennials. They just come back in the spring.
I even have one I overwintered in my garage for several years because I couldn't decide where I wanted it planted is doing great in the ground.
i agree with kate, peonies are quite easy! and they are gorgeous when they bloom :)
@@Edu_Kate thank you!
@@preciousshortie thank you !
I'm in 7A. Time to get mine out of storage and see how they are and pot them up. Wish me luck!
"if you can't see that eye, you're blind" **snort** That made me chuckle.
😆
Sometimes I have zero recollection of saying these things. 🤣
Yep ... that's what I'd do probably.
@@TheImpatientGardener sweet! Thanks for the quick response!
Hoping for a great season with them 😁
Love the video I never done tubers. I had done bulbs. I love color of dahlia
Thanks Erin I’m potting mine up this week. What is the lowest night time temperature that you leave you dahlia pots out in the greenhouse at night?
Thanks for your video!😍 This is my first year planting dahlias. I potted mine few weeks ago. Some leaves are curling down. Do you have any advice ?
Can you please make a video on dahlias diseases and how to cure them, thanks 🙏
The tag fell off of the first tuber with the slightest touch. How do you keep them on all winter?! I used those tags but I added twist ties. Some still fell off. It'll be a nice surprise when they bloom. Thanks for the great info!
Honestly? I sort of wedge it on the stem, hope for the best and pull them out VERY carefully.
I don’t lose money if I lose a tuber, I just have a bit of disappointment.
dividing is good idea n more new plants as well
I’m hoping they won’t rot, I guess time will tell..... lol!
I planting Dahlias for the first time ever😳
How far below the tuber should I amend the soil.
I have good soil but it’s to heavy or dense for the Dahlia tubers. I was going loosen the lower soil with sand and then do a mix of potting soil spagnum moss and pearlite to fill the planting bed.
I’m in Southern California zone 10
Greatly appreciate any suggestions .
Really enjoy your videos
Thank you.
Debi
Thank you
Erin, thanks so much ! I followed your instructions and all my dahlias are doing great! Where did you get that beautiful patio table? 🥰
Thank you so much this really help. I always manage to rot my tubers. Now I won’t water them so much
Hi Erin. I’m curious if the Shrivelled Dahlia grew? I haven’t been able to tune a note or link.
It did and performed exactly like the other dahlias of that variety. No noticeable difference whatsoever.
Okay great I have one that meets your description and I’m hoping it will make it. Thank for these awesome videos! I refer back to them frequently!

Very helpful thanks! Although we don’t think we have room this year to get started ahead of time with how full the plant room is 🤪
First time planted dahlias this year slow grower right now, cause we just had a snow storm . Hoping for a warm temperature soon..
How well did the shriveled dahlia do?
It was perfect! Grew exactly the same as it’s non-shriveled sibling.
Great Video ! Where did you purchase the large trowel for loading the compost into the pots ?
Very helpful! Once they are in the greenhouse how often do you water them? Should the soil just always be slightly moist? Thanks!
Yes, slightly moist until they have a good amount of growth and then I switch to watering them more like any other plant: thorough deep watering, then allowing them to dry just a touch. They do like consistent watering.
Once outside in your greenhouse at what temp would you bring them back in? How low can they tolerate. Thank you.
Would it help to soak shriveled tubers before planting?
Yikes, I got overly eager this year and potted tubers like you have here, but too early. I don’t have a greenhouse or grow lights and the shoots are really leggy. I’ll try to move them to safe light during the day, but question: is it okay to pinch them to make them less leggy?
How cold can they handle? I have one out and it's getting down to 38 tonight? Guess I'll cover it up
Ideally I'm happy when they are above 45. I don't think anything bad will happen at 38, but they will get chilly at that temp so a bit of extra protection would be good.
Hey Erin
Did the shrivelled one make it?
@@TheImpatientGardener 👍🏻
followed your way of storing dahlias in the animal bedding first time ever they made it and had 3 shoots up no shriviling
do i put something around leaves when they come up i think it is called slug bait. i didnt water them there in the ground
@@TheImpatientGardener Aporeciate the reminder to reward when he stays out of the garden.
Anxious to see what you plant in it!!🌿🌺🌷
Hmmm, I’m a little surprised you don’t have growth as well. But if you planted too deep they will still come up so hopefully you’ll see them soon.
@@TheImpatientGardener thanks for the encouragement, Erin. Enjoy your channel a bunch!
For some reason, the links for the tools you posted arent working for me 😢😢 love your videos!!
This was great. Thanks! 👍
At what temperature do you keep your greenhouse during the night and day?
It's at the whim of the weather, but I will throw a space heater in there just to keep the night temps up on unseasonably cool nights.
Thanks for this great video 👍🏻
I didn’t pot mine up early last year and they didn’t bloom until September!
I think that's typical.
Potting up a couple weeks early indoors may buy you more bloom time.
I'd just keep them cool (cool basement or garage is fine) and dark until you're ready to plant.
Erin - once the stems show and I move them to a grow light/ south window how much do I water? Thanks!
I keep them just moist until they start putting on a good amount of growth and then to I to sort of "normal" watering.
