That's a common misconception about why Pittsburgh potties exist, and they were definitely used for that purpose, but the practice is actually in place for sewer reasons. Back in the times these types of homes were being built, highly populous cities had big issues with sewage backups. Originally Pittsburgh potties were lone toilets in unfinished basements. This is because when sewage backs up, it will flow out of the first toilet or opening available. Having this potty in the basement meant it would at least overflow there instead of in the finished upstairs bathrooms. Only after plumbing improved were a lot of these lone toilets turned into actual bathrooms with walls, doors, sinks, and occasionally shower/tubs. And they're found all over the northeast and Midwest too.
Now that you've done several states already, maybe a little map graphic at the beginning or end that gets filled in will help all of us keep track and not request repeats.
yes it's SO common for houses in PA to have a bathroom in the basement and a special basement door! i lived in a coal mining town, so the architecture was different from pittsburgh, and yet this build has me feeling so nostalgic- so many of your builds just seem so homey and realistic, and every time i see them i'm so grateful 🥺 i also love how you don't shy away from things that are outdated or messy or a little awkward in the layout- this feels like it could be a friend's house from back in PA- you're so right about these 1920s-1940s homes that got renovated once in the 70s/80s and then never again- that look is so iconic to a lot of pennsylvania- i may be biased but i think this one is my fav so far
This looks so much like houses in Pennsylvania! Coming from someone who is from PA!! My mother called these houses “stamps” because it looked like someone took a stamp and placed them all identically next to each other. I love how realistic and homey it is! So many houses there have history and this house looks like it does as well! 💕
@@Gryphi You did really good! It was really nostalgic watching you build this, it reminds me of childhood friend's house, all the way down to the toilet in the basement.
@@Gryphiyou did an amazing job, I’m in the city Philadelphia, the city’s okay (^it changed once again and I’m just a teenager-) but the homes especially generational, looks just like this because it’s like 2 houses/homes on the same plotting and the homes *be; are skinny just like this. This particularly makes me think of the houses on the end of the street/block. The counter house of the street. Also in neighboring counties mainly of my knowledge, the Delaware cusp (*county*) and Darby, Pittsburgh looks like this too. This is definitely South PA 🔔❤️
Honestly when I seen the start of the video I was like "no way pa houses aren't like that!" Then I realized that my house is literally like the bit there's houses on each side so it threw me of that it was by itself lol
This house could be an exact copy from one in East Liberty, Pittsburgh and I'd never know the difference lol- also something about the little hill from the driveway to the porch is oddly nostalgic
once u do all 50 states or even during this series you could do a “renovating the states” series where u go back and upgrade things but keep the floor plans and flooring and can only change paint/furniture/ect!
Do Illinois but single out Chicago and Chicago Greystones! They're gorgeous! We have very unique architecture in Chicago! Oh even a Chicago Bungalow as well, those are gorgeous!
My sister moved to Pittsburgh 2 years ago and when I visited I fell in love with the architecture! It's one if the last areas that really has a distinct style and not just cookie cutter "hgtv" homes.
id love to see a build for an oddity collector!! so like someone who collects cool or unusual things, including bones and whatnot! i think itd be so fun to see it all cluttered with random stuff
This is so familiar to me - I grew up in Western NY and lots of my friends lived in houses like this one. I would love to see a California craftsman or a Hawaiian home! I really enjoy this series, so thanks!!
I’m from Pittsburgh but moved to Ohio a few years ago and miss home everyday because no where I’ve ever traveled are anything like Pittsburgh. You were spot on with this build! Pretty sure I had the same floor plan in one of my previous homes lol. This just felt really good to watch for a girl who is homesick. Thank you so much !!
We always had enclosed backyards growing up. Nice, mow-able grass is only slightly more common than having a pool (which is to say pretty rare) because water is limited. Only rich people can afford to have a both lawn and a pool, and even then most don’t. Lawns usually take up a specific designated area of a yard. Almost every pool I’ve ever seen has been an in ground pool. The average yard is mostly gravel or dirt unless someone added wood chips. Most people put in patios of either sandstone, brick, or concrete. Landscaping in front yards usually includes low water bushes, tall dry grasses, and thin trees.
As a perso who lives in PA (Pennsylvania), the exterior remind me of houses I always see. It's very heart warming to see that this house was inspired by the state I live in!
Hi MsGryphi the four squares of a four square are living room, eat-in kitchen, dining room and master or office. Front door leads to the living room with or without a foyer. The upstairs is usually three bed and bath or four bed and bath. The ones I’m western Canada often have an upper balcony above the front porch but not always. Yours is a super cute townhouse that is very believable from that period.
We had a pool in one house. Then we lived on a farm. Then with a fancy yard with a pond. Then in a city. Then at the beach. Lol I have lived in a bunch of places! Oh on a pet cemetery! I have lived in Lancaster, PA with the Amish! I am an Eagles fan. Love the house.
This house struck me. I live in Eastern PA, and the basement bathrooms are quite common in row houses built cheap, in their day, for the booming coal mines. It's be great to have the option of multiple row houses on the same lot, as many city blocks are in my neck of the woods. This reminds me of my grandmother's house when I was little; bought in the 70s and never renovated. PA, the "Second State", is also the home of Yuengling Beer.
I live in southern central PA and the aesthetic is spot on. So so many old homes with the old dark wood, including ours. We live in a big old Amish built farmhouse, dark wood framing everywhere. Thanks for this build! Great work!
I totally get the “if you had a pool you were rich” lmaoo this house is really awesome you find these all over PA. I live in Harrisburg and these are EVERY where in the downtown areas. Also, I have a shower in my basement but I had no idea it was common here haha
For Colorado, you could do a mountain cabin in granite falls, or a ski cabin in Mt komorebi. Log, stone, big fireplaces, maybe fire pit or hot tub, and a chance to use some of the snowy escape stuff. :)
Beautiful beautiful build! Totally fits my newcrest vibes. The house I grew up in was kinda perfect. Just the right size. Good backyard with room to run, a tree to climb and a playground in the corner. Was also walking distance to my elementary and middle school.
I’m excited to one day see your take on Texas. Partly because this is my favorite series on YT, partly bc I’ve lived here my whole life (my whole family has), and partly because I think your take on a McMansion would be so amazing and kinda funny to hear about! (They aren’t as mansiony and huge as they sound, but they are ridiculous!) Anyways, best series ever.
@msgryphi 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 So familiar! My grandparents’ house has that basement! The walls are concrete and the room is still unfinished…I used to be so afraid to use the toilet down there when I was a kid. They also have a cool cellar on the other side of the basement. It’s a small room that stays cold. My Poppy used to keep a fridge in there stocked with huggies and pop!
I loved the PA facts! I’m from Pennsylvania and have lived in a few parts now. I have a few fun facts as well! The state was named after William Penn who bought the land. He named it after Penn’s Woods (sylvan) bc it was so forested: Pennsylvania. Some of the native tribes in PA are Lenape and Susquhannock. we also have the Appalachian mountains running thro and most of PA is part of the Chesapeake watershed :)
I’ve been waiting so long to see you do PA! I’m not from Pittsburgh but Pennsylvania is my home state. I love a bit south from Pittsburgh but the home still felt so realistic to what you’d find in PA. Loved all the facts! Thanks so much for making a build of our state!!!
The toilet basement reminds me of the house with the murder tub that my husband and I toured when we were house shopping. It needed updating but overall wasn’t too bad…except that it had a really strong basement smell, even upstairs - so we go to the basement and it was a really rough unfinished space, half had a concrete floor, but the other half of the basement had a dirt floor, and in the middle of the dirt floor area, there was an old nasty stained tub sitting 3 ft off the ground on concrete blocks and a nasty stained utility sink. We decided it was a murder tub and noped right out of there. Your build is much much nicer, haha. This is nicely detailed and really sells the “older home” aspect. Oregon could be really cool!
Would love to see in the future, building based on different countries! There are so many unique buildings out there that I would love to see in a inspired sims build!
i’d love to see your take on an adobe style house for new mexico. like even if you could use the little luminarias from seasons and make a christmas season themed one. that would be so cute
Great build! I'm close to Pittsburgh, PA and you did a great job. I've lived all over the country and PA is the only place I've ever found bathrooms in the basement like that😆 Can you do Massachusetts next? A beautiful Victorian with a widows walk would be amazing!
You should definitely do Montana next!! We’ve got a bunch of cool facts and people that are from here, or celebrities that live here! Also loving this idea! So fun
I love when you do these state builds. I first found your channel via the Lively Lousiana build and I am so glad because your content is awesome. I can't wait to see what you do when you get to Hawai'i.
Did you know that Sears Department Store used to have a big catalog that sold everything? Including homes? It would be cool to see you recreate a Sears house!
Where I live (Eastern Washington State) we have large and some small homes and business buildings made with the rocks from the Missoula Flood that happened thousands of years ago.
I think a series like this would also be pretty cool if you would do it with countries, i love to learn facts about different countries and cultures ☺️ also learning alot with this series about the states since i’m from The Netherlands 😌❤️
I'm in New Mexico... it might be fun for you to do an adobe build. I think it's super cool that you're doing a 50 states series! I homeschool, and tell my children that the TH-cam videos they watch need to be "creative, inspirational, and educational!" So this fits the bill!
Coming from the country in Kentucky you should really make one of the white farm houses that's normally attached to a cattle farm! Also I really love the build!
I'd love it if you did a build based on architecture in South Carolina, where I live! There's a lot of colonial styles, plantation styles and traditional styles. Actually, I'd love it if you did a build that's based off of Rainbow Row in Charleston! Those buildings are over 200 years old, I believe, and it's a very popular tourist attraction! You could also do a house based on Myrtle Beach or the capital Columbia.
Can't talk for the accuracy (from Europe) but I like these specific brickstone style. I also really like the front yard, together with the flowers you used.
A couple ideas you actually haven't done yet: A colonial for Connecticut, a ranch style house for Texas, an art deco-inspired house for Florida, or a bungalow for Michigan
Love this so much! I’m gonna have to drop this into my game. I could totally see this in Pittsburgh! I live near seven springs mountain resort so I’m not far at all!💗
I’m from PA and I’ve definitely seen houses like this before! Something about this build made me feel really nostalgic and I honestly adore this build so much 💕 really good job on this build and I can’t wait to see the rest of the states! Also is it not common in other states to have bathrooms in their basement? I had no clue lol
I'm old so when I was a kid, in the 70z, pools were a suburban thing and yeah, for those with more money. Now they're very common, all above ground and quite affordable.
If you're looking for suggestions on inspiration for South Dakota: a super-nerd dude built a comic book castle literally in the middle of a bunch of cornfields, complete with a hidden entrance with mock-retina scanning tech and way too much money in a random person's hands. Honestly, there's a weird amount of castles in SD. Only some of them are homes, though? And then the corn palace...
Another incredible build! I love this series and can't wait for the next one. Maybe you can do Hawaii in Sulani? I'm terrible building there but would love more builds to live in!
The part where you talk about pools is funny because my family that lives near Pittsburgh actually has an in-ground pool, though at my own house hours from Pittsburgh we only ever had an above-ground pool back when we had a pool at all.
Now my yard is kind of big but with nothing there except for a small shed at the back since we had our pool, playground, and a tree removed (It might only seem big because it’s so empty, though).
Still loving your Wisconsin winter house in my game! Loooooove loooove it and have the perfect family in it ❤ it's so funny that you talked about the toilet in the basement bc I literally like a few weeks ago read a history article on that! Well, I'd love to see ohio, missouri and tennessee because those are where I've lived 😊
I absolutely adore this build! My dad's side of the family is from Pittsburgh actually lol! I had no idea about some of the facts for Pennsylvania! :0 Thanks for sharing with us, Tonya!!
Doing a Texas farm house or even a fake plantation would be cool (I have no clue what they were actually called, but I grew up in an up and coming small city in east Texas and my neighborhood which was built in the 70s pretty much only had this house) (my mom somehow made tacky 00s interior design work which is just a testament to how good of a realtor she was). A lot of the houses in that city where built between the 50s and 80s. Or an Oregon beach bungalow (I live in one currently on the coast, it was built in the mid 1920s and is a strange one, but it’s got a view and a big kitchen so me and my roommates can’t complain)
Love the build! However, not an American four square. American four squares are usually symmetrical. The front door is in the middle with an equal number of windows on both sides. The staircase and hall are also exactly in the middle with 2 symmetrical main rooms on either side, for a total of 4 main rooms on the first floor and four main symmetrical rooms on the second floor...which is where the name four square comes from. Regardless, it's still a great build and definitely looks like many houses in PA!
Cant you put alligators in the ponds? You should do Florida... or Kansas, where I live. I dont know if we have particuarly interesting architecture though. ETA: found out you already did florida! haha. Also, thinking about houses in Kansas, if you built one, it would definitely need a basement, cause tornados, and so many houses have like, screened in areas. like a little screened in porch on the side to hang out in during nice weather but also keeps mosquitoes out. I wish we had screen windows in the sims instead of just glass ones to recreate that! Also, breezeways. And Kansas has a super interesting and bloody history.
My grandmother had a large plain backyard, my foster family had this awesome split level, with a sun room off the dining room, that led out to the above ground pool, which took up 80% of the yard. Space is too much at a premium in NY/New England.
That's a common misconception about why Pittsburgh potties exist, and they were definitely used for that purpose, but the practice is actually in place for sewer reasons. I read this as well in some of the research I did. Definitely really interesting!
this feels like the most realistic sims house ive ever seen lol, with the tight spaces and old furniture :D love that sm

ahh! Yay! I am so glad I captured it well!
I've only ever seen around Carbondale. It looks like a jigsaw puzzle of houses that a 3 year old tried to put together.

Pittsburgh girl here! This is SO accurate! 🖤💛 Thank you!
As someone who lives in PA- impressive. When you started adding hills I was like "yup- she did her research, everything is on a hill here"
born and raised in central PA. I loved every second of this!!!
I’m from Pittsburgh, and this house is pretty spot on . Soooooo many homes look like this

I was not aware of this series, but it's so interesting to see. As a person from Europe I really enjoy this insight in us homes
I’m excited to one day see your take on Texas. As an owner of a Pittsburgh house with the Pittsburgh Toilet, this makes me very happy:)
This reminds me so much of my pop pop’s house and all the other houses like this that ive visited! Very nostalgic

They also have a cool cellar on the other side of the basement. It’s a small room that stays cold. My Poppy used to keep a fridge in there stocked with huggies and pop!
This looks SO much like my cousin's home in Philadelphia!

Amazing house! It looks compact, but still it has vibs of cozy atmosphere. I felt that i dont mind trying and living in such house myself)
This made my Pittsburgh heart happy! Thank you!
Would love to see in the future, building based on different countries! There are so many unique buildings out there that I would love to see in a inspired sims build!
i’d love to see your take on an adobe style house for new mexico. like even if you could use the little luminarias from seasons and make a christmas season themed one. that would be so cute
Oooh. My family puts those out every year.
So fun
Salem Massachusetts next!!!!
For Missouri, you could do a style of house called a Kansas City Shirtwaist house. They have some cool features and are definitely doable in the sims!
I love when you do these state builds. I first found your channel via the Lively Lousiana build and I am so glad because your content is awesome. I can't wait to see what you do when you get to Hawai'i.
I LOVE how you put the half walls next to the stairs! Such a small touch that makes such a difference!
Ok, I'm not even from America but I loved this house it's so cute.
As an Oklahoman, I immediately recognized the style from my 3 years in a Pennsylvania row house!
Fantastic work, can’t wait for Oklahoma!
I would love to see an Industrial/Modern build based on Portland, Oregon! San Myshuno would be a great place for it! ❤❤❤
I'm from central Illinois and the basement toilet is pretty popular here too. My grandma's house has a basement pretty similar to your build! :)
Did you know that Sears Department Store used to have a big catalog that sold everything? Including homes? It would be cool to see you recreate a Sears house!
I’m from PA and still live here so I can confirm that this is extremely accurate 😂😂
Where I live (Eastern Washington State) we have large and some small homes and business buildings made with the rocks from the Missoula Flood that happened thousands of years ago.

The house looks soo cute.
Thank you!
I'm in New Mexico... it might be fun for you to do an adobe build.
I think it's super cool that you're doing a 50 states series! I homeschool, and tell my children that the TH-cam videos they watch need to be "creative, inspirational, and educational!" So this fits the bill!
I'm voting for a Charleston house for South Carolina. Very unique style and suited very well to Willow Creek, but with Palmetto trees
Coming from the country in Kentucky you should really make one of the white farm houses that's normally attached to a cattle farm! Also I really love the build!
Love this! Looks exactly like so many houses I've seen in PA!

Can't talk for the accuracy (from Europe) but I like these specific brickstone style. I also really like the front yard, together with the flowers you used.
WEST VIRGINIA! MOUNTAIN MAMA!! haha we should be next!! 💙💛🤍
I'd love to see your take on a raised ranch home!!
I love this series, as a Brit who has only visited California.
Virginia! A colonial build like a cottage would be awesome :)
What a nice idea!! Love this series and your beautiful houses 💜
Love this! Can't wait until Colorado comes up!
I live near seven springs mountain resort so I’m not far at all!💗
We have a Pittsburgh potty in our place! Hello from Beaver Co. PA 👋🏼
Michigan lake house, since we’re surrounded by as well as full of lakes every where!!
I live in Pennsylvania, and you are spot on. You did a great job on the home. New subscriber here.
Excited for you to do Oklahoma

This makes me happy because I’m from Pennsylvania.
Thanks for sharing with us, Tonya!!
I think something on the west coast would be really cool!
love this build! I just built an apartment building based off from the Northside of the city
Sooo cute! I’d love to see Michigan or Florida next :)
She did Florida before this one
This is different and beautiful
Love it! I’m originally from Pa but now in DE. So excited to see something from my home state ♥️
I love this series so much, all the cool and interesting details that really capture the specific style, amazing! 💜
ITS BACK I LOVE THESE VIDEOS
I would loooove to see Arkansas!! Specifically north west Arkansas!!!
You should do a Texas house and put it in Strangerville! That town always looks like west Texas to me
So cool this reminds me of my mother in laws house (she lives in PGH)
