The reason "random" coat colors can show up is because certain breeds have some attached "recessive" coat colors that can appear in their offspring, which is very realistic to actual puppy litters :)
Yup!! That’s how our lab is a Dudley when all his other siblings are chocolate!
Same thing with humans too! They don't do it with human sims though do they
@@tanyabhaskar2888 The same does apply to humans, but we don't have as much that's based on it. It's easier to notice on dogs because they're literally covered in fur. The Sims does use recessive genes for the humans but again it's not as noticeable.

I remember when I used the paint tool for the first time to give one of my cats a little bow tie. I ended up giving him to my sim's daughter, but the other cat had the trait that makes pets wonder around the neighborhood and, shockingly, even come back pregnant. I didn't even have to guess who the father was - all the kittens had little bow ties on them 😂

@@nanyummyify I wondered why mine had kittens a few generations ago. She had a kitten Daisy I created in CAS from her then had a kitten I called Oopsie. It wasn’t until she passed that I noticed on the screen of my family they were listed as Oopsie n Daisy. Lol completely unplanned that bit.

I used the paint function once to make my tortoise shell colored cat in game. I spent all night painting all her little spots and had reference pictures to make sure it was accurate.
This is why I use MC Command Center to set it so kids inherit the maximum number of physical traits from their parents possible, and I disable random mutation lol Well mostly. I think I left like a one percent chance a randomly mutated thing could enter just because it is interesting watching a mutation spread lmao

@@kyidyl There are a couple of sections to do that.
First, go to MC CAS.
Under there go to "Offspring".
Then go to "Use Parent Physical Attributes" and Enable it.
Then go to "Parent Values Variance Percent" and set that to whatever you like. I set mine at 1 because I think its fun to have a tiny chance at a random mutation but you can set it to 0.
Then go to "Use Parent Skin Details" and Enable that.
Then go to the MC PREGNANCY module.
Under there should be another "Offspring" section.
Then go to "Inherit Trait Type" and set it to "Inherit Maximum Number".
Then go to "Maximum Inherit Traits" and set that to 20 cause thats the most.

I did use the custom tools to create my own irl dog at one point. It was weird though because size-wise she's halfway between large and small, so I didn't know what size to make her. But I did really enjoy being able to customize her fur so well.
I made my dog once but I couldn't make her fluffy enough without changing her breed
@@jenrrr I'm pretty sure you can change the breed name to whatever you want, so just make the dog look right and then change the breed name manually

I did use the paint tool to immortalize my passed away cat ☺ her fur was like a snow shoe cat but slightly different, now I can see her everyday

I honestly wish that they’d implement more thought-out genetics in TS4. It would be super cool to see consistent patterns in large families, as well as which recessive and dominant traits exist within a family.
Hey lilsimsie, me and my sister play this “challenge” that we kind of made up. We set a timer and give each other one minute to make any changes to a blank sim we want and then we switch. And do it over and over until there’s nothing else to add. And you’re not allowed to change what the other person did and by the end you have a cool looking sim that you made together. I haven’t seen anyone else do it but its really fun. Just a suggestion. :)
I want that painting/color wheel tool that pets have for Sims hairs! It would be so cool to be able to dye your sims hair however you want
This makes me want to do a legacy challenge where I also keep a cat family with me throughout!
You’ll have like 30 generations of pets before you get to 10 generations of sims lol

I think genetics for pets is pretty accurate cause my aunts dog had a litter of puppies and the mama dog was all brown and puppy 1 was brown, puppy 2 was white with brown spots, puppy 3 was brown with dark brown spots and puppy 4 was dark brown
Have you ever seen pictures of corgis breed with just about any other breed? They literally just look like corgis disguised as whatever they were bred with. It's cute and hilarious.

Oddly enough, those early iterations are familiar to how dog genetics actually work to my knowledge. I love how mildly actually it is to dog genetics.
Honestly every pet looks similar in the sims so usually when I make one for my sims I use the paint tool and I always choose "unnatural" colors (red,blue,and purple are my favorites) so that the pet is unique to that sim/household.

I used the tool to make my dogs and cats. My dog has really different fur, so it was fun making her. The only problem is that after they added neighbors stories, the game auto moved my sim and the pets to a house and when I saw it, I had a child and the dogs had 3 puppies 🤣
You should do one with purebreds (like all golden retrievers) and see what happens since sometimes the puppy looks nothing like the parents anyway.
I did. I have 4 maine coons and I needed my sim-self to have her squad in game. Murray has a spot that looks like a heart on his shoulder!
I use the paint tools a lot when recreating coats on dogs or putting lil decoration markings on my animals. I used the moon stamp on one of my cats recently bc i wanted him to look magical for my witch sim🤣
One of my favorite things to do since we had babies and generations starting in Sims 2 was to play with genetics, it was so much more fun in Sims 3.
One game I had I made a huge family of blonde and sent the daughters off to live their lives. One daughter I used to just mate with pretty much whatever male walked to her front door (or near her house since this was Sims 3). And at one point she had a red haired child. No idea where the red hair came from, far as I remember the father didn't have red hair either. Her parents weren't red haired. I don't remember if I had made the grandparents but I probably did and *they* didn't have red hair at all.
It was a neat little 'experiment'

I wouldn’t mess with the paint tool for a random cat probably, but I did use it to make my IRL black & white cat (before he passed away this year) and it looks SO much like him

Also, I do use the paint tool when making my pets but ONLY if I'm actually trying to create a pet based on a real pet. Like I made my actual dogs and used it on them.

Dalmatian spots are a form of what is called piebald colouring (white with coloured patchs) common in lots of dogs. In Dalmatians(and sometime in Chinese Crested dogs irc), it is extreme piebald spotting, vs say a english bull terrier that is white with 1 eye patch (just extreme piebald) vs regular piebald that the second gen puppy had -larger coloured patching. So mixing extreme pie with a 'solid' brownish dog/no pie, got you a sort of middle piebald dog. It is actually fairly accurate dog genetics. -info based on my memories from studying dog genetics/alleles 10 years ago in biology. :P

i've used the animal painting tool for specific animal characters, like my webcomic's dog characters that have very distinct patterns, and when i was doing my Undertale Sims LP a few years ago, i used it to make some of the dogs in the game. it's definitelly nice for those types of things!
Imagine being able to paint on your sims body like you can do to pets. costum tattoos and birthmarks or stuff 😍
I like to create pets that I’ve had dreams about irl but who don’t actually exist, because i tend to get quite attached to the animals in my dream, so it’s like having a picture of them even though I can’t really take one! Painting them always helps to get them to look just right like my dream

YESSSSS i LOVE messing with pets in the sims! the paint tool is so fun because you can use different brushes and make like, tiny leopards, do something crazy, or make a realistic cat!

That's actually pretty accurate as to what happens with mutts. I mean, not the coloring and features that appear out of the nowhere, but the fact that you keep getting the same dog. When dogs get so mixed, only the strongest features such as black or caramel fur, short fur, comes out, and that's why most of the mutts end up looking the same and don't have distinct features.
It's the origin of the "vira-lata caramelo" or "yellow/Caramel mutt", which is a specific kind of dog we have in Brazil that we see several of them everywhere, and popularly became our "national mascot".

I love making custom pets, I’ve made all (current and previous) our family pets at least once. I usually use low opacity and keep layering until I like the look. I treat it like I’m painting.

I have this game i like to play where I start off with 2 purebreds, randomize pups until I fill the family, and then I pick an "heir" to lead the next generation and I breed that one with a different purebred. it always turns out so cool with so much diversity and its my favorite thing to do in cas

I used the paint pet tool for the first time yesterday because I was trying to make my dog, who has the colouring of a rottie but I wanted to make the patterns more specific. It was surprisingly easy once I got the hang of it, and the sim dog looked a lot like mine!

I used to breed unicorns in sims 3. I'd decorate them to have pretty rainbow colors and flowers and stuff, then breed them to see how the babies came out. I miss that. Wish the genetics worked the same in sims 4
I blended all the breeds twice. That was a fun experiment. Dog ended up being all white and shaggy. Pretty dog. I add it in a lot of my games, and she has pretty puppies.
I had a calico cat and currently have a tortie, i go into great detail to try and make them as realistic as often when creating them in the sims

I’ve created a lot of pets for townie households, but don’t play with them much in game/in my main households. Which is odd because I do love cats and dogs so much in real life, but in seems they often seem like more of a chore, or I use cheats/mods to make them less annoying, but then I kind of forget about them 😅😭

The last dogs head shape is from one of the earlier generations, like with humans say your great great grandparents were twins and had red hair and it skipped and skipped and you end up having twins with red hair. It’s all about the genetics and someone can look just like their great great great grandparents. It’s weird but interesting.

I once had a save with 2 dogs and I bred them together and each puppy had the head of one parent and the body of the other one. They looked adorable as puppies but then they looked really weird as adults so I put them up for adoption

I use pet customization as an extra step in most challenges (like not so berry) or when placing myself and my irl cats in every save.
Genetics is not necessarily a mix, humans have recessive and dominant traits. The parents combo of recessive and dominate traits change the chances of them showing up.
Basic sense: Mom has blue eyes, dad has brown eyes. The odds of the offspring having each eye color is about 50%. The baby won’t have a mix of brown and blue eyes, they will have brown OR blue eyes. Add in recessive traits and this changes things. Genetically dad has a recessive trait for blue eyes, his eyes are brown because that gene dominates over blue. That changes the percentage.
Same goes for hair, freckles, dimples, skin color, everything.
Same goes for plants, animals, everything. This is why the dogs end up being one or the other parents. It’s basically a simplification of genetics on the sims end. They won’t be a blend because genetically that’s not how it works.

I breed dogs in the Sims a lot (every household always has several dogs, I'm obsessed) and I think because pet customization options are SO elaborate in the sims 4, the randomizer just gets confused and is only able to pick some things at once. Like, it will never mix parents in equal part, and only take a limited number of elements. No idea about the random colors though.

I've used the paint tool to make my irl cats and dogs, and I'm thinking about playing not so berry and having the pets be the generations color too, that would be so fun
I use the create tools on my pets all the time. It's so much fun to change the coloring, and add spots to the animal or stripes, or even make it a holiday pet, with green fur with colored spots for ornaments. LOL
I have never printed my animals. I sometimes use the animal cas if I’m doing a storyline and I want a specific sort of animal but even then it’s mostly general stuff.
The Sims 3 I would say is the best by far for having babies from your pets
Because they literally mic every, like let's say you have a dalmatian and a Labrador
You will either get, a Labrador with spots
Or a white Labrador/ dalmatian
Or a puppy is one spot
To up to 50 spots
It's so random, so random
It's not like the sins 4 where they basically look like the parents and only change coloring randomly, because the coat itself has 3 other coat colors
Let's say- like a Labrador, there's brown, black and yellow
You breed a yellow Labrador with a black and white dalmatian
And you randomly get a brown dog
So...

I used the paint tool only once cuz I was making my irl cat in the sims, but besides that not really, I just choose from the ready coats
I've used the pet tool about once (hoping to make it at least twice though) and it's because I was making Sims based on Persona 5 and one of the characters in Persona 5 is a cat. But I didn't really need to use custom tools that much because that cat is just a very standard tuxedo cat, I think the most I needed to do was paint over his belly and add white paws and a white tail tip
Same on the barely using pet stuff, like a lot of my sims families have pets but I only ever put them in collars - or harnesses for dog walks, none of my pets get the funky outfits or colouring available despite me paying for the pack when it immediately came out lol
