    Background: I'm a little over two years into four days of yoga per week. Middle aged former athlete and still enjoy sprints and light weights. Not the most flexible in the world.
    I was close minded about this practice because I had to get past the suntan. Sorry, I'm a dermatologist. Also, there's an echo, so I had to convince myself I was in a class in a room with an echo. I'm so glad I was open minded--beautiful great class!
    This practice is more of a recovery Iyengar practice as opposed to a typical Iyengar slow hold vinyasa practice. There are no shoulder or head stands. It's a gentle practice that is not superficial in the least and is also quite original. Amazing teacher who seemingly drips with joy in her quest to help students of yoga (sorry, I can't write the word 'yogi' without cringing). Her descriptions of where and how different body parts should align were helpful and not intrusive.
    Thanks to "Online Yoga Teaching" for an amazing and surprising class. Wonderful teacher but please let her know that she should apply more sunscreen--that skin needs to last so she can keep teaching into her 90s!

      Hello Alan. Your message was wonderful and made me laugh. 🙏
      I'm Cat and OYT is a one woman show. A 2 year project that I started in 2019 - to share the details that are often hard to find but make the practice so rich and infinite.
      This class is one of my earlier offerings and was filmed on the old iphone - thus even more echo. Am grateful for your patience around that. It annoys me too! The newer classes have less of that.
      As for the suntan. lol. Noted! To be honest I am amazed that I even have skin left as I grew up on a sailboat in South East Asia - back when people didn't know about SPF - and all that sunlight reflected on water. Well... you can imagine. But I promise to be more careful!

    I'm interested in how fear makes me move, can I change that and how do I know when I don't move in fear?

    • @YogawithCat
      @YogawithCat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Jules. What a fantastic penetrating question. Indeed fear (conscious or unconscious) holds our bodies and minds in certain 'grips'. Patterns of fear. To locate them and identify them takes time, love and bravery. We start (from the Yogic perspective) with breath/body awareness. Imagine the outer body as a carapace of protection - like a castle wall. This has to literally be opened and made living again. Inside is the inner body. Waiting to be invited to expand. The contraction of the outer body (due to stress, fear; anxiety etc.) holds it hostage. As we begin to melt the ice of 'frozenness', within the structure of the practice, we begin to feel more profoundly. Both emotionally and in the hidden landscape of the inner body and the passage of the breath. With each practice becoming more familiar with this new topography of awareness. This leads us to a place of intelligent sensitivity - free of the construct of what we believe ourselves to be. With each practice, with more noticing, with increased states of expanded awareness we begin to trust this 'other' guidance. Intuition is ignited as is the trust to notice it arising. Ultimately, similar to a flower that is blooming, we too yearn to blossom. To know ourselves and feel ourselves to be part of the living pulsing matrix of the universe. Free of fear. And as we give space to regular practice, we give space to the noticing of what impedes our natural flow. And as we work in loving committed dialogue with our innermost recesses, we allow ourselves the space to notice what arises. And when fear is noticed, taken out of the shadow of shame, sadness etc. and really noticed, then it begins to dissolve. Quite naturally.
      From a simpler perspective - doing a body test works wonders. For instance, do Trikonasana. And then whilst in Trikonasana think of something that really stresses you out. And watch the body crumble! Similarly, if you are not sure abut something or someone, test it out in a pose. Trusting the body's reaction.
      As for knowing when you don't move with fear - there will be a sharpness. Alert detached witnessing. There may still be elements of fear present BUT they won't invade the mind/body vehicle. The noticing of it - the witnessing quality- creates the life-enhancing detachment necessary to observe the fear, to work with the fear, without falling into its emotional clutches. Ultimately practicing Asana is about practicing the delicacy of the steady state of watching. So much more to be expressed about this topic... Thank you for asking such a profound question. I suppose the simplest answer might have been - keep practicing mindfully and watch fear reveal itself to you. Namaste 🙏 💓 x Cat

      @julesgiddings8747 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cat thank you! That was quite a lot to take in but I really appreciate you giving me such a detailed answer. About Trikonasana, if I'm anxious I can't hold that position for more than 2 seconds, interesting! The reason I asked you this question was I've been struggling with some full on anxiety the last few months and it has become quite debilitating to say the least. I've started getting back into doing Iyengar yoga as often as possible but struggling to contain my emotions still. Thanks again. Jules x

      That WAS a lot to take in. Apologies. I'll try to keep it shorter this time. Getting straight to the point: the Trikonasana testing obviously answers one of your initial ?'s pertaining to knowing when you have fear and/or are moving with fear. Next issue is how to deal with the fear right now. As it's getting in the way of living life fully. There are different perspectives to consider...
      1 - Historical perspective. Do you know what triggers it? Is it an event or a person or a situation? If so, finding someone of high vibration with whom to process this.
      2 - Cognitive psychology - looking at how 'your' mind processes things. What programmes are in place running the show? There are some incredible books on this subject and once I unpack my moving boxes I can recommend some!
      3 - The Brain. Crucial. Our entire perceived existence is through the brain! We can adjust the imbalance of the neurotransmitters through specific supplements, vitamins & power foods. For instance, high anxiety would indicate low Gaba. Vast topic! Best to e mail me if you want to know more. catderham@gmail.com
      4 - A 'Spiritual' Practice. Consistent and committed no matter what. Breath. Body. Nowness. Giving space. Stepping back. Watching. Witnessing. Allowing the unfolding of 'all' within structured space. Showing up for yourself everyday in this way.
      There are of course other perspectives. But I'm getting 'lengthy' again! So I'll end with one last thing: 10 years ago my father was run over by a motor boat. He still lives but his daily joy & independence are greatly reduced. It threw me into a radical depression. I lost ALL my faith in everything. They were dark years of deep searching. The above perspectives & protocols helped tremendously. There IS light at the end of the tunnel. Even when we think there isn't.
      And in the mean time, connecting deeply with Self-Care. Being gentle and loving with oneself. Massage, Essential oils, Amazing foods and vitamins. And surrounding oneself with energies that raise your vibration. People. Locations. Happenings. Having firm boundaries around what depletes you.
      Hope this helps in some way Jules. 💖 🙏 x Cat

      Cat thanks again. Lots of good advice, especially the last part around boundaries and being around the right people. My biggest trigger is shame, shame of not being good enough etc. Comparisons with others, the culture I live in etc. I'm so sorry to hear about your father, but at least you still have him. Cherish the time you have with him. I lost my Dad a year ago and I often think about how I could have done things differently but I was lucky to have him.
      I see a therapist and work a spiritual programme as well which helps me and connecting with similar people etc. Thanks so much, I may email you for more info. Thanks Cat. J x

      My best friend who is also a Buddhist monk wrote the following words and they feel appropriate to share right now. "Gift yourself. Let go of shame and doubt and worry and appropriateness. Be radical in your choices only in the sense of being true to yourself. Be YOU any f------way you want to be you. " 💓 x Cat

      Hi David. Yes I know... the echo from a studio is tricky. But this is an older offering and the sound is much improved on more recent additions. th-cam.com/users/onlineyogateachingplaylists
