I was in the Sphere zone from 6pm to 1.30am when we got kicked out, I was obvs furious. First ever GP and leaving FP1 made we wonder if I even wanted to keep following the sport. Then after being kicked out, I was even more angry to see some fans still in stands on the strip, and there's me trying to see some cars through the barriers that they put up to stop you doing that. So paid a fortune to see F1, and ended up being blocked by a dark screen and going to bed listening to them. To be fair the Sphere zone was rocking until FP1 ended, after that it was like the apocalypse had happened

I've been to a race weekend and attended all the sessions and the grandstands were basically empty for FP1 and FP2 so that's pretty normal. We sat in someone else's seats and had some beers and hung out with some other fans for the afternoon. Same thing for the rest of the sessions. Super-fans get the full weekend pass, most people just buy a race day ticket.

The worst part about Toto's comment was the bit about how "it was only FP1 on a Thursday night and people in Europe are not even watching it on TV." So it doesn't matter? I get that most of the fan base is arguably in Europe, historically. But there are plenty of fans everywhere in the world. Wasn't the point to increase the fan base? Then just keep it in Europe. As an F1 fan living in the USA, I would rather see Imola or Hockenheim back on the schedule than watch cars driving around a stadium parking lot with a fake marina, or a circus with all the distracting neon signs. Anyone else noticed how difficult it was to follow the cars on the screen with all the blinking lights around the track?

In motorcycling when they are in Ireland for the North West 200 they actually paint the manhole covers yellow and weld them down as the bikes going at 200+mph lift them up and those are the big heavy manhole covers not the little ones shown at Las Vegas. So the extra suction the ground effect F1 cars have it is surprising that this wasn't foreseen. Especially if they have had the problem on other street circuits.

Yup. I spent big $$$ to fly to Montreal and had 3-day grandstand tickets. I went every day but we were one of the few people there. There were 8 fans in the whole grandstand on Friday but it was a nice sunny afternoon so we hung out and had a few beers. If it was raining or I lived in Montreal I wouldn't have bothered.

Quick background in the amount of force exerted on the drain covers, you're lookin at about 3kN of force at 0.4 Bar abs for something that size.
Assuming the pressure under the cover wasn't above the static atmosphere, since this was an acces hole for sprinklers and not sewage I'll just assume normal atmo under the lid. That will give a difference of about 0.6 Bar (60.000 pa). This thing looked quite small, if I have to guess 250mm diameter. So that gives 0.125^2*π*60.000= 2945N. So when it was picked up by the car, the energy put in would be about the same as a 300kg deadlift.
For Russel's car in Baku it would have been around a whopping 17kN😅

While certain team is definitely within their right to veto the petition to rid Sainz of his penalty, it is really unfair. Maybe they can think of some rules so that if damage are caused by obvious track failure leading to reparation job carried out on track immediately after, driver could get a replacement of parts for free, including the salary cap?

The thing that upset me the most, it's the fact that they tried to cover the whole incident. They gave 0 information to fans and acted like nothing happened. It would have been easy to come clean, assume the mistake and fixe it, not try to sweep it under the rug. Also, that it took them 5 hours to get the track ready again, it shows quite a bit of unpreparedness.

One thing I wanna point out about the fans not being in attendance as expected is the fact that some places near the track have views of the circuit without paying ridiculous amounts of money.
I've seen on the local news while I was at work that Top Golf has a fantastic view of the pit lane and you don't have to pay a stupid amount of money.

The pricing for this event has been the biggest disaster so far! People aren't going to just let Liberty Media take advantage of them, they won't buy tickets and just watch it live at home instead. The event should want as many people as possible actually attending the event to build atmosphere for the television broadcast and gouging people with ridiculous ticket prices and then treating them so callously like they did at 1:30 a.m. when nobody got to see FP2, is a really bad look for F1 and this isn't something the teams or the FIA are getting up to, this is the ownership of the sport and that damage is much harder to fix, as imposing fines and suspensions isn't an option.

  • @matthewgamble95

imagine paying for an event, not being able to see one day of it and then the second session being delayed and increased in time to make up for the lack of free practice one, and then you are told ur not even allowed to see the delayed second session. so you miss 2 sessions out of 5 in a hugely expensive weekend.

The Sainz penalty 100% sucks, but I don't see it as all that different from getting crashed into and needing to take a penalty for a new gearbox, which happens pretty regularly.
Ultimately, I don't think they should allow exceptions for parts, because at the end of the day, they do gain an advantage by having more fresh engine parts than the rest of the field, that has to be offset somehow.

It is quite sobering to hear that the stands were nearly empty during FP1. Forcing those that paid WAY too much out of their seats before FP2 and out of the event area is beyond the pale. I truly wonder what will happen next year. F1 still has 2 days to make a better impression to those of us watching from home, but I fear the damage has been done for paying customers/fans that went through all of the trouble and expense to attend in person...

  • @mathewperring

Actually, watching the practice you either have the wide shot of all the lights or if you follow the cars around with the normal shots you' really don't see any landmarks so you might as well be anywhere. The track itself seemed rather non descriptive and with the long straights and DRS I don't think overtakes are going to be particularly exciting. This one will put you to sleep even if the stupid time slot doesn't.

If you don't like the fancy Vegas show stuff then thats fine, feel free to complain about all that, but hating on the track and the US for no reason just isn't okay. We should be wanting F1 to succeed, not wishing them to fail at every turn

The same thing in Miami. FP1 is absolutely empty. It slowly picks up throughout weekend but there is a ntoiceable increase in traffic and stands are full for the race. Its not about F1 and racing, its about saying you were there and getting your instagram pciture. They are ruining an absolutely lovely and beautiful sport we love.
