The Rejected Joker Deleted Scene That Changed The Batman

  • The Batman has been the talk of the internet since it's release, but what if I told you that there was a scene that would have made the movie feel very different and that would have tied into other parts of the film in unexpected ways? Today, we're taking a look at The Batman's Barry Keoghan Joker deleted scene. Matt Reeves has talked a lot about this scene and it's very clear that a ton of work and care went into it. So the question is: why was it cut? Why didn't this make the final edition of the movie and why didn't we get to see Robert Pattinson's Batman meet Barry Keoghan's Joker? #thebatman #dceu #joker

    I think this scene would be a great post credit scene. But I am kind of glad it wasn't included. It would steal the spotlight from Riddler. I am one of those that love his design, it looks like he just crawled out of a acid tank.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It's interesting how he does sort of look that way even though Reeves said that wasn't his origin here. I'm still interested to see what they do with him if anything in the future.

      @@_CPP_ this scene would not work well as a post credit scene. Why would he ask Joker how Riddler thinks when he already caught Riddler.

    • @_CPP_
      @_CPP_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheCapedCrew I’m just saying if it was in the movie, it would’ve fit the best in the post credits, because if it was before Riddler’s attack on Gotham, it would distract the audience away from Riddler. One thing they could do would be to write before the scene: “Before Batman caught the Riddler, he talked to this one inmate” or something like that.

    • @TheCapedCrew
      @TheCapedCrew 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@_CPP_ No it would not work as a post credit scene. Think about it, Riddler explains to Batman how he thinks thoroughly, so why would he then go to Joker how Riddler thinks after it’s already been explained to him. The dialogue for this scene would need to be changed and look at the file Batman is holding (we see the DRIVE puzzle too) which he solves near the beginning of the film and he goes to the car park with Gordon as a result of solving that puzzle, so it would not work as a post-credit scene.

  • @RbkARI
    @RbkARI 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    This scene also spoils the twist where Riddler reveals he idolizes Batman and thinks he's been working with him, which might be one of the reasons it was cut.

    This video was entertaining. I hope the second movie starts off the joker escaping, but batman couldn't deal with him. The reason batman can not go after joker because he's dealing with a real threat. Imagine if the second movie is almost done and batman looks into the distance an explosion happens and the movie ends with laughter.

    A paper clip is useful in prison. I could see Keoghan just improvising taking it while shooting and it made it into the final edit of the scene

      It would be useful I'm just not sure if there would ever be a payoff to that type of subtlety. Usually it plays in elsewhere and with Reeves saying he isn't even sure they want to use Keoghan in 2 at all it's one of those things I feel like could be very well on purpose by Keoghan or not.

    Great video jay! Personally I love this scene and wish it was kept in the movie. It makes the scene at the end feel like less of a tack on and demonstrates to how manipulative/intelligent this rendition of joker can be. From taunting batman to beginning the process of wrapping riddler around his proverbial finger. I don't mind the the origin reeves is going with. It fits with the more realistic setting he is creating and pays homage to "the man who laughs". The character the joker is based on. Hopefully we just little nuggets of him in the future that will lead to final boss like confrontation to end the franchise on.

    I was really surprised how no one compared this scene to the scene from Batman Under the Red Hood when Batman goes to Arkham to obtain the information about Red Hood since Joker was formerly the Red Hood and for his opinion of the new guy.

    As much as I love the scene, and the aesthetic, I do believe that cutting it was the right decision. Aside from the fact that it feels very "side-questy," it also just kind of undermines the subtlety of everything else in the movie. It's very on the nose and basically spells out the whole Batman/Riddler dynamic. The scene is very in character for Joker, though, since he is a master of manipulation and reading the social/physical cues of others. All in all, good scene, bad for the movie

  • @-Teague-

    I'm glad they cut it. I'm feeling a lot of Joker fatigue from the Batman franchise in general and I honestly wish he could just not be in this series at all. Maybe that's a bad take but I'd much rather see some underrated or less relevant Villians get reinvented like they did for Riddler than see yet another version of the ol' clown

      I'd like to see him but I'd rather we see him later like a 3rd movie probably at the earliest. It's hard because Joker is one of the best written comics characters out there but they keep rebooting movies and always go right back to him which I get but it can burn people out

    • @-Teague-

      @@robbyk7070 I wish, if they were gonna bring him back, they'd do something really nutty with him like the TV show The Batman (2004). They knew they were coming behind one of the most iconic versions of the character (BTAS) so what did they do? THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF EVERYTHING ABOUT BTAS JOKER!!! Joker in The Animated Series was this maniacal gangster dude who was really cruel, unhinged and sadistic but always had a certain controlled composure to him. So what does The Batman do? Makes him a totally nuts acrobat who can not only throw hands with Batman and take over all of Arkham in one night but is also an accomplished chemist who can do stuff like turning things into rubber and make a hot air balloon that runs on poison gas. How nuts is that?! But their version of the Joker still stayed true to the heart of the character while expirementing. I feel like we've never really gotten anything like that in lifee action y'know? I know they couldn't do all that stuff outside a cartoon but I wish they would experiment more than they have 😒 sorry for the rant lol

    About the Chekovs Paperclip situation:
    It wouldn't have to pay of later, as it could also serve Joker's characterization as well as the overall open-endedness of the movie. After all the film feels like it's not just happening in the vacuum but like part of larger universe with implied stories hapenning all around it. It's a bit to much in the detail for that though.

    It's a bit hard for me to judge this "Joker" off of his tiny amount of screentime. I've seen a lot of people dislike him because he's clearly very different than a normal Joker, but I'd argue so was Ledger and so was Phoenix and they both ended up being very interesting characters in their own right and even changing some perceptions of The Joker on the whole. Reeves did mention before that this isn't a finalized Joker it's a person who is clearly nuts and on their way to becoming The Joker, but he's not end stage Joker like we would see in Arkham or even mid DCAU etc. This is a person with mental issues sort of evolving or devolving to that point. So when people immediately shoot down this Joker, I'm kind of confused on the reasoning.
    That said plenty did that with Robert Pattinson as Batman when he was cast too and some still don't like him and some really changed their minds. I'd have to see more of the character to feel very strongly. I liked the scene but I'd almost rather have it be a "canonized" short film set in The Batman's universe than have seen this full scene in the movie.

    • @DegenerateJay
      @DegenerateJay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah it's hard to judge any actors performance or at least ability to become a character off of just a couple of minutes I agree with that completely. Hard to know what he'd look like with makeup and a more classic look too. You brought up Ledger and it's worth mentioning his aesthetic was unique but became accepted and even beloved over time.

    We had a lot of Joker in the last view years and there are so many antagonists in the Batman Universe. I would have liked to have the deleted scene in the movie but no hinting that The Joker and The Riddler are going to team up in the future. So they just should have put out the scene with The Joker and The Riddler in the end. In the second movie the people with the Joker Make-Up and with the Riddler Suits maybe can play another little role. But thats it. I think when the events between The Joker and The Batman stay unknown for the viewers it would be a nice little way to bring the Fan Favorite Character back, but not giving him such a primary role this time. We just had a new Joker 2 years ago. It wasn't a criminal mastermind but still. Maybe when the next movie takes a long time to hit the cinemas, then it maybe is ok. Or maybe The Joker gets the third movie. This would be nice. But that doesn't work when they already hinted the teamwork of The Joker and The Riddler in the first movie. The Joker kinda loses his charm when they overuse him.

Honestly it's a little hard to judge him completely off this one scene and 3 or 4 other lines at the end of the movie imo. Reeves even said this "Joker" isn't fully Joker yet.
