- Human rights lawyer Nandita Haksar explains the genesis of the Naga independence movement and the importance of the NCSN(I-M) ongoing talks with the Indian government. A resolution is important to the Naga issue, she tells NewsClick, but first the history and the complex nature of the demand has to be understood. This is not just a matter of Nagaland insurgents putting down arms, which is how the Indian state sees it, Haksar says. It is a matter of what kind of future is being created for the Nagaland people, its' neighbours in the northeast, its women, rural folk and the poor. Right now, none of these seem to be the agenda.
If you can interview Naga intellectual then I think they can explain to you their clear perspective and let you know many details of the process because you can't find everything in books.

Good for Nagas. Why GOI is not cunsulting Manipur Arunachal Pradesh and Assam which will be affected by this talk.NSCNIM is demanding nagalim and their separate constitution. Separate constitution for all the Naga inhabited areas in all the three states that will be affected. GOI should have consulted all state Chief Ministers. Now we see lots of army troops movement in Manipur now.

Nagaland was under the external affairs of India untill 1972 but was forcefully brought to home affairs of India.

NAGA s demands was long pending issues for more than 70 years old,but it seems that after 100 years also the Government of India will not be responsible their demands. INTERNATIONAL NGOs, Political Leaders AND NSCN (IM) Nexus IN
NAGALAND Prior to our independence, Nagas fought against British invasion and Christian conversion. Angami braves of Khonoma, Mezoma and Kekrüma fought against British rule and Christian missionaries for several years in first half of the nineteencentury. The Chakhesang Nagas of Thevopisumi village fought against Christian conversion and church sponsored Naga National Council (NNC) led by A.Z. Phizo -who demanded complete secession from
Bharatvarsh. Haipou Jadonang - a Rongmei Naga from Manipur who led a strong resistance to British expansion andmissionary menace, was hung on 29thAugust 1931. Rani Gaidinliu - then a girl of 16 years led the movement called Zeliangro ng Heraka Movement to protect the sovereignty of the country and defend indigeno us Hindu faith. Even A. Z. Phizo who hailed from Khonoma village assisted Indian National Army (INA) led by Netaji Subhsh Chandra Bose in the Kohima war during Second World War to defeat British invaders. Even after this resistance, British could establish their rule over Naga Hills area and pushed American and British Christian missionaries into Nagaland under
Army protection and Government support. The forced conversion to Christianity and expansion of British rule advanced together. After the grand success in ividing the country by creating East and West Pakistan, the Britishers picked up Phizo and NNC cohorts to create a Christaincountry in Northeast Bharat.
Firstly, British officers employed Christian missionaries to convert Nagas and then,they (British rulers) asked converted Nagas (Phizo and NNC militants) to startinquisition against those Nagas who refused to convert to Christianity and support British policy after 1947 so that a Christian solidarity could be established with USA and UK by the initiative of American and British Baptist Christian Church for the formation of Christian Sovereign Nagaland . Phizo who supported Army of Subhash Chandra Bose and fought against British army, joined the British bandwagon after conversion to Christianity and waged a
war on Bhratvarsh to secede from the country and started Christian inquisitions in support of Christian crusade to convertall Nagas to please his British masters.
Anybody who expressed different opinion was brutally killed. NNC and church were all the same. Overnight, churches opened in even remote areas, which came shelter place for guerillas of NNC.
Missionaries acted as informers against army movements and against those Nagas who did not support NNC uprising and Christian inquisition jointly operated by NNC and church. This was the reason that Rani Gaidinliu and her Zeliangrong Heraka(Hindus) movement was the prime target of NNC and Church. They (NNC & Church)were after the head of Rani Gaidinliu - the freedom fighter. British missionary -Rev. Michael Scott became friend, philosopher and guide of Phizo and NNC rebellion.
This British reverend supplied lethal weapons packed in Red Cross boxes to NNC
militants. The Church formed several NGOs which acted as host to NNC guerillas and Christian crusade. Government of Bharatvarsh under Pt. Nehru couldn’t pay
requisite attention to what was being done against the country by NNC and Church combine.
The Crown Colony Plan
The Britishers had a Crown Colony plan- a buffer state under British rule, in
independent Bharatvarsh by seceding from Siliguri corridor.
When it could not happen at the time of secession of both
the Pakistans in 1947, they employed NNC guerillas and Church organization to materialize the dream of creating a buffer state in Naga Hills which could be an army base for America and Britain because of NE’sstrategic location in the midst of Hindu Bharatvarsh, Communist China and MuslimEast Pakistan now Bangladesh. With their long experience in divide and rule policy,the marauder masters sitting in London crushed and killed all Naga leaders who opposed annexation of Naga areas with British Crown and conversion of Nagas through force, fraud and proselytisation. That they did through NNC, Church and several Naga NGOs created under the supervision of the British masters planted in Church organizations. Naga club and Naga Hoho were such two NGOs, who were
master campaigners and expert educators of NNC and Church agenda amongst Naga public. When GOI wanted to arrest Phizo for his anti-national activities, he
silently escaped to London where he spent a royal life till his death in 1990 hosted byBritish Church organization under the supervision of Rev. Michael Scott and Billy Graham.
Division of NNC
In 1975 during emergency, NNC signed Shillong Accord 1975 accepting the
Constitution of the country. Few hard-core militants defected from the NNC underthe leadership of Th. Muivah (Tangkhul Naga), Isak Chishi Swu (Sema Naga) andS.S. Khaplang (Hemi Naga)because of ideological difference. They
went to China for military training and formed National Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN) in 1980 under deep influence of Chinese Communism. This NSCN was again bifurcated into two - NSCN (IM) under the leadership of Isak Chishi Swu and Th. Muivah and NSCN (K) led by S. S. Khaplang.
Two years later, NNC was also divided into two - NNC (Adino) and NNC (Yanthan)after the death of Phizo in 1990. Mrs. Adino is the daughter
of Phizo and Khadao Yanthan (Lotha Naga) is the former private secretary of Phizo. All the four factions started killing each other in the war of supremacy even after the conciliatory role played by so many NGOs like Naga Hoho Nagaland Baptist Council of Churches (NBCC), Naga Student Federation (NSF),
Naga Mother Association (NMA), Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights(NPMHR), and Naga Club (which is dormantnow) etc. Several masked NGOs are registered under country’s law and also under Foreign Contribution Regulation Act 1976 with a declared aim of serving the society in the field of economic upliftment, hygiene, medical care education and HIV/AIDS.
These NGOs are receiving uncountable money from their foreign masters through Hawala and also through all the possible legal and illegal means.
In return, they are funding rebel organizations for purchasing lethal weapons. They are also involved in drug and liquor trafficking in Nagaland. These NGOs are involved in other dangerous activity. In the name of eradication of and prevention from HIV/AIDS, there are mushrooming of such NGOs to amass enormous money from foreign NGOs. These NGOs are openly advocating for sex education and free sex but with condoms. They display how a girl and boy can prevent unwanted pregnancy and still keeps HIV/AIDS away even after repeated sex only by the use of condoms designed separately for boys and girls both. The trainer NGOs display condom use in their training classes.Thus, they have targeted to spoil the youths - the most vital section of the society.
These NGOs are run by Nagas but these greedy masters of NGOs from Naga community busy to become rich overnight don’t bother about the future consequences of their dubious activities sponsored by their foreign masters.
There are two types of such NGOs operating in Nagaland today. First, in this
category fall such NGOs which receive money from GOI, foreign NGOs and foreign funding agencies. They declare their aim as working in the field of economic development, education, adult literacy , childcare, hygiene, medical care and environment etc. A large chunk of their money is siphoned off in the terrorist camps. The other type of NGOs are those which work under the garb of student organizations, youth organizations, tribal hohos (apex bodies), civil organizations and human rights organizations. These organizations openly receive money from state governments. In other words, these organizations are nourished by the State Government and foreign funding agencies enemy to Bharatvarsh. These are Government organized Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). That is how the State Government of Nagaland is helping Naga insurgency.

She's picking facts from history, Catholics were descriminated during the initial part of religious growth in Nagaland, even some of the NBCC leaders were collaborators with the Indian intelligence as well, hence Rev wati got assassinated in 1981 by the nscn during a crusade in turnsang. He was responsible for preaching false propagondas in public squares against the nscn as communist under indian government aid. The truth is bitter my friend, everything is a lie. Naga are such smart PPLS that they have no good quality roads,no infrastructure,no it sector,no industries,poor healthcare facilities(even for small small disease they used to visit ghy and other part of india),poor connectivity with ghy,no railway infrastructure(except in dimapur),no quality educational institutions like du,iim,iit to create brains
No sufficient agriculture to feed their own people(majority of crops comes from assam wb in nagaland),no law and order situation to save public from their money demanding underground icons.

Very well assessment of Naga Issue. On the one hand Nagas are targeting Indian Government in the name of lack of development (even if all the resources are in hands of Nagas), on the other hand, Nagas also want to have a Christian law in Nagaland and put aside the secular one. I sense a terrible time coming for our country in Nagaland also apart from Kashmir. This should be carefully addressed.
Some north east State Including nagaland central government do collect any tax that's way there development become. Whatever they collect thats only State government tax. So how can possible development?
You should not be confused with the Motto "Nagaland for Christ".
It is an aspiration and not a law. Nagalim will be a Secular country not like the present RSS Govt of India. You must know India is the only country in the world that is run by an NGO (RSS).😂
Since 98% of Nagas are Christians, we have adopted this. Nagas laws have nothing to do with Christianity. Before the advent of Christianity, Nagas are Animists. We have our own customary laws which we practiced till today.
We Don't discriminate people on basis of religion. And Nagas won't allow that.

It is very true that our parents and grandparents suffer so much beyond words in the hands of Indian army. There are lots to tell by everyone but my village was burnt down into ashes for 7 times. The villagers were force to live in jungle and if the Indian army sees any smoke they would fire there. Indian armies gather the whole villagers and tortured them for days, they hanged public upside down and burn chillies at their nose, rape woman, the whole granaries were burnt so the have nothing to eat... so much to tell. These were the reasons that they were many disabled people of my parents age. So the men got no other option but to fight back and protect our motherland till the last man stand(sacrifice not by force), and that will never die. I'm not in any political groups of Nagas but hearing all the pain our parents have gone through we grew up hating Indian armies, sees them as our enemy and not the soldiers who protects us. For many unbearable force our leaders were forced to join India not by option but by force. GoI should accept the bitter fact of what they have done in the land of Nagas in those years and gives Nagas the freedom to choose what they want.
I agree that Indian army torture all north east people in one way other way not only naga... I myself also hate Indian army... I also feel the same pain... As a Naga I think u know it better but u should know there is no kingdom for Naga in the history... The term naga is not a tribe name is a union of diverse tribes... Don't distort history plssss....

I am confused how naga can declare independence when there was no naga Kingdom in the history. They were staying as small small localities ruled by chieftain or headman. As such naga is a very recent term coined by britishers and the term naga is not a tribe name is a union of diverse tribes it seems history is distorted completely to make their identity known to others

Have been traveling to Imphal since 2013. In Manipur I have more friends from the Valley than from the Hills. Since you talked about Naga History like you have done your P.hD in it, hence my response can be seen in the above Comments. If only some of you Stop interfering in the Naga Political Issue, there wouldn't be any bitterness.

Oh my life it's horrible n terrible what I have experience through... The geographical history mind set made me taught being as Naga's in Manipur I do suffer a lot cos implal west peaple had mostly easy to hold as per govt jobs... We hills suffer due to delay or postponed n even demand a big amount from the candidate by higher authority like minister who had responsible for health and family welfare if by chance they are planning to give they focused candidate who are willing to give high amount for govt jobs especially for police, teacher, nurses even in a primary n secondary sector. Poor like me would not have taste of govt Jobs in Manipur ...seems those Imphal west peaple want to consider themselves as first class by adopting Indian development policy . Anyway what ever has exports I can see around on the national highways mao gate to Imphal but I doubt what did they do with it n still don't care about the hills.... Though it's developed alot on the other side but not to my side....
We Nagas has been a free people and free nation since time immemorial. India should get off our ways and leaves us on our own.

Dear Maam please study the history of the states where the naga tribes inhabited too. Integration of nagas inhabited areas means destroying the history, land and integration of present states. Breaking a state to pieces for making another bigger state on basis of religion and ethnic basis is against the Constitution and humanity. Christianity brought the tribes together, and then follows the concept of Nagas to get some political and economic benefit in the name of social integration. Many tribes had said they are Nagas in gunpoint. There are many tribes who don't allowed to vote for once even though they have there own voter ID. This is just an example. Please consider.
