    I remember as a young kid in the 5th grade, living in Clarksville, Tennessee, every Friday night picking out some new movies to rent, and then right next door picking up a pizza from Papa Murphy’s. It’s so weird to think that was 15 years ago. The way they operated too was interesting. I remember only having a movie for 2 days to watch, or 5 days if it wasn’t a new one. There were times when all of the good movies were already gone so you either settled for an older movie or you settled for a new one you really didn’t care to watch. Late fees is such a weird concept these days too. One time we got charged late fees because someone took the stickers off. And it was always a pain have to make a special trip to drop them off. Then Redbox came, and they’re still around, but that was another pain, and we just forgot for a week sometimes to return a movie and just get charged each day. It was fun to pick out movies back in the day but I’m glad to have streaming services. Problem is it seems like there’s never anything to watch.

  • @raave-c137
    @raave-c137 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Having lived through this time my main reason to switching to Netflix's DVD subscription wasn't the unlimited rentals, it was the fact that you didn't have to pay late fees! You chose which plan you wanted which dictated how many DVDs would get sent to you at one time. And then you got to keep those as long as you wanted, the caveat being you couldn't rent any more movies until you mailed them back with the free postage. For me it was great because I used to rack up horrific late fees at Blockbuster. Once Netflix went to streaming more of their catalog that was it. There was little reason to get out in the middle of the night to rent a movie if you can just get it at home for less money.

I still get a warm feeling in my heart when I see them in movies and TV shows. every time I drive by the building that used to be in that store I always give it a look with a glow in my eye. The 90s were good times. Picking a movie was more than just deciding what to watch. It was a place for you and your friends to talk about the movies you’ve seen, make suggestions, Have friendly arguments etc. going to Blockbuster was an event

    I still remember a sort of Block Buster-esque store in my home town where I'd go to get my games and movies. You rented them for a week then had to return them. They had multiple copies, so when I went to return my current copy, I'd just rent the same thing and snag a different copy. I had Rampage, Army Men Air Combat, and Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask constantly on my shelf.

    There is also that thing where Enron kind of stole a bunch of money from their investors and cut and ran

    With HBOmax deleting shows for tax benefits, I feel like the blockbuster business model is the future again

    I completely forgot Netflix started as a DVD-renting business online and then transitioned to streaming.

    During their last yr or so, B.B. attempted to compete with the N.F. by way of mail-order rentals. However, it was too late. The sinking ship was going down and now rests at the bottom of the historical ocean just like the Titanic. Figuratively speaking of course. I was a weekly customer to the brick and mortar video stores and just found it STUPID to rent movies through the mail. I didnt wanna rent something on weds or thurs just so i could have it to watch by friday. Of course, now its a totally different way to watch with streaming be the better way to go.
