The inclusion of Dark Beginning is really exciting. Also hilarious that Paul pulled all the good staples from Dark Beginning and Alec somehow pulled trash in such a loaded pack LOL
23:53 that's an illegal move. It can only be done with premature burial but call of the haunted destroys the monster if it leaves the field in any way. 28:45 bait doll shuffles itself after resolution. Also, paul's luck with dark beginning is hilarious
Great series, I think seeing the deck evolve throughout the episodes and the fact that you guys are using cards that us casual yugioh fans recognize, is what makes this so entertaining.
It’s really cool to see how your decks are evolving, and starting to actually develop strategies now. Interesting to see how the game has been gradually evolving with each subsequent set.
This series is an instant classic, loved the deck building aspect this time, Paul's Fiends especially. Unfortunately, i believe i spotted a few mistakes on Alec's part: at 23:54 , Call leaving the field because of Giant Trunade would have destroyed Harpie's Brother. At 29:30 , isn't that Alec's second flip summon that turn ? He already flip summoned Spear Cretin. And at 32:28 , Spirit Ryu's effect can only activate during Alec's battle step. Still real fun duel !
Hey now, YuGiOh players have trouble with reading. We all know this haha Can't fault them there. Easy mistake with Spirit Ryu. Call of the Haunted however? Yikes

Another really fun episode! One recommendation, especially with some of these older, less known cards, would it be possible to put an enlarged picture of the card when it's played? Just to give a chance to read the effect.
I understand doing this series is an expensive occasion with these old sets, but this is one of things I look forward most to seeing come out. Really loving the content and these really fun duels :D
The *Spirit* archetype was one my personal favorites along with the original *Elemental Heroes* and *Flip Effect/Rock* archetypes too. Master Marik will be pleased seeing his Rare Hunters train even more. *Dark Chuckle* 🤭
I absolutely love this series! It’s so much fun seeing older cards I completely forgot about being used along with all the banned/limited cards. I actually cheered when Fiber Jar flipped.

Gotta say, I've never been super into YuGiOh (besides collecting and trading for Dragon type monsters with my friends in middle school), but this has quickly become one of my favorite series to watch every week! Keep up the great work guys!
Love this series because this is how yugioh is meant to be played. Open packs over time to grow your collection, and edit your deck. Won’t win you tournaments but you’ll win with fun

Amazing series guys. Just wanted to comment on the usage of Bait Doll. When it's effect resolves it is shuffled back into the owner's deck instead of being sent to the graveyard. I noticed Paul sent it to the GY after using it but he didn't have to! I used bait doll a lot back in the day to deal with battle traps and the fact it could recycle itself into the deck was always extremely helpful. Hope this comment helps and I'm looking forward to the next episode!

@@vileluca I don’t think it was malicious on Alec’s part, but with these things and the duel where he got pissy about Swords getting used so much that Paul didn’t do it to avoid being Toxic but he ended with that deck out cyber jar bullshit, which was toxic. And then this, I love the energy he brings but it’s hard to enjoy him winning when it’s because of rules mistakes and guilting Paul into not being optimal in his plays.
@@shadowofhawk55 It's definitely not intentional. Both him and Paul have made plenty of mistakes and misplays in previous duels. That said, Alec tends to make mistakes more often. Like when he won with the Crystal Beast Structure Deck, via a misplay.
I actually find it annoying though, that an incorrectly played card actually wins him the duel here. Otherwise it still could have gotten anyone's side... For the rest duels like this are still fun content
Spirit ryu only works during your battle step, and Call of the haunted leaving the field means the monster is destroyed. Shame cuz I think those mistakes may have altered the duel result lol But whatever, it would’ve been close either way
Found you channel after The Professor collab and I have to say, your content has made me pick up laying yugioh. This series really encapsulates that early childhood experience of building with what you have. And I enjoy that. Love the inclusion of dark beginnings being used the way it is. Also love how you opened packs together at the end. Really made thr pulls feel hype. Great series.
I love the additions to the series. The new pack dynamics makes an even better cliff hanger that makes me extremely excited to see the next episode. My only critisim is to next time just flip the camera view in post so we can see sere Alex's cards right side up because those were amazing last min pulls. Sucks to see Alex's rare card bite him in the back but it was a hell of a way to end the duel
Very nice, I like all the choices you've made for formatting, I think this'll shake things up very nicely. This was a particularly interesting duel, very back-and forth. I like that you've settled nicely into the Fiends vs Flip/Dragons deck identities; it's impressive how different, yet surprisingly close, your decks have become despite the lack of named archetypes. Also, the ongoing saga of the Harpie's Brother that kept getting revived over and over, only to finally get banished, pretty funny stuff lol
I really liked this game, it was extremely balanced and I really liked the new decks you guys built. I really like the feeling of this duels, I'm really living again those 2008 vibes I miss so much from current yugioh
I'm not really into Yu-Gi-Oh but you guys and the Three Idiots channels are incredibly high quality and entertaining content that I love watching. You all make Yu-Gi-Oh fun for me to watch! Keep up the good work, love the content.
14:21 Oh my god it happening! Everybody stay calm! Stay f*cking calm! With each episode I get more and more excited seeing the progression! It's a really nice feeling.
It's so fun seeing the pace of the game slowly speed up and see some combos start to emerge. The fact that you both committed to a specific strategy instead of a deck sort of leaning towards one thing at the same time shows how good these newer cards are. And you've already started pulling archetype garnets like harpie lady sisters. I do feel like the winner should be getting two packs instead of one though, I get the idea of not letting one player get too far ahead but that one really hurt for Alec
The best Yugioh series on TH-cam by some of the biggest class acts in the business. Hell. Yes. Glad to see that so many of the little changes that were suggested in the community post seem to have made their way here, what with the private pulls, the DB opening rules, etc. Yeah there were a couple of rulings hiccups but, combined with the attempt to jam in hamfisted "strategies" (DNA Surgery Dragon support package tier 0, obviously), it felt exceedingly 'playground format' which is exactly what I come here for. Thanks guys!
7 years of yugioh content. Damn. Most people on Yt’s most recent video on this like the og players. Would be around 3 years ago but you guys are still going, I just really appreciate and enjoy your content

Fiends are kinda underrated in my opinion. They are not Meta by any means, but they sure keep receiving support that makes them good in casual plays, in any generation/format of the game.
I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh since Invasion of Chaos. Watching this series reminds me of why I fell in love with the game decades ago. I almost want to pick it up again because of this alone, but I know it's a different beast now. Can't wait for the next episode!
awesome duel this week. I'm loving this series. To see you guys pulling new cards out of old school packs and building decks around the cards you pull. This just brings me back to the old days. I'd also like it if you would stay with the old school packs and not go any further than before Synchros :D
what’s interesting about this is, if you go on long enough, you could probably pinpoint when Yu Gi Oh started to become “broken”. even though you guys have banned cards, like pot of greed, it’s still a close match. how many more matches till you start having incredibly long turns or instantly winning after a few turns?
Honestly, the broken nature of Yugioh really just comes from access to everything. Nothing will seem to powerful here since they can only get 1 of each, since they are both using the same card box.
Even a modern deck will play closer to this if they just pull a handful of random boosters. The crazy consistency comes from having 3x of all your best starters and a full extra deck toolbox to access what you need. Look at how many times they resolved pot of greed this game and how many times they just set and passed for their turn
If you follow the Japanese game. It was broken from the start. Leading to some dominate decks very early on. And then a burn deck became meta. Not to mention Delinquent Duo, Confiscation, and Forceful Sentry were at three at one point. So you could lose your entire hand going second. And to top it all off, Konami liked to put meta defining cards as promos in 40-50$ games. Over in the TCG, the game probably broke around the time Yata Lock was introduced to the game. Early YGO reeks of a game that was made by people who didn't have experience running a card game(which it was), so degenerate cards were abundant. Like Delinquent Duo. Modern YGO is the result of letting old cards stay legal. If old sets became illegal, power creep wouldn't be where it is today.
I would say this is the best rare hunter episode it was super close throughout the whole thing….. this is the type of duel that should be going on today
Man, Dark Beginning takes me back - I dunno if the same was true for the US, but I remember getting a few boosters that were error packs in the sense that they had multiple foil cards in them, IIRC one pack gave me a Jinzo and Relinquished. They were also prone for having the standard rare cards being printed with the wrong name - I can't remember if it was Legendary Fisherman or Mad Sword Beast, but one of them had 'Blast With Chain' as its name, and I had a Gaia the Fierce Knight called 'Last Turn'. The packs with the misprinted names tended to come from the tins released at the time, the ones with multiple foils were store-brought. Also god, the 'After Genocide' print of 'After the Struggle', I actually still have a copy of that card cause it was such a great botch in trying to keep the game kid-friendly.

Yeah this episode felt so much more fun to watch than the last few. They were good, but the gap between decks felt like it was getting a little too wide and this definitely closed it. Good game to you both.
Is it me or did Paul "cheated" at 30:49? He had 5 banished cards at 29:58 and when he resolved fiber jar, he only had 4 cards in the banished zone. Possessed Dark Soul just went back to the deck I assume. PS: I don't play yugioh much, I just watch it, maybe it's a weird ruling issues that I don't know about. Also, I don't think that it would have affected the match that much, but maybe it could have. It could have caused a butterfly effect that reorders every card of the deck and the match wouldn't be the same as it went, who knows. That's why I prefer automated Yugioh, where small mistakes like that don't occur like Master Duel, so we get the "true" yugioh experience, but real cards do get that vibe, I also get it. I do love the content. Keep up the good work Team APS!
Adding the reprint packs is a good decision to potentially allow for previously impossible strategies. Some old cards from previous episodes could become viable
Love this series! I was looking through LOD recently and it surprised me just how much type support there was. So I was excited to see how your decks would change and it was even better than I hoped. Seeing Twin-Headed Wolf, Winged Minion, Spirit Ryu, and Dragon's Gunfire work... amazing. I'm SO HAPPY to see a Polymerization in the game! My vote would be for giving both players a playset of them. It's so painful to see cool fusion monsters pulled knowing they'll never get used. But maybe now we'll see Fiend Skull Dragon or Dark Balter...?
If I could, I would suggest not putting your rare card in the thumbnail anymore. Kinda takes the suspense out of it, we already know what's on the line when that happens.
Paul's deck is so cool. I didn't expect a Fiend deck to work without Dark Necrofear. It's nice to see viable combo's from cards I have never seen in play before. Also nice to see some Dragon cards to work, near the end of the duel.
In the little bit where you wagered Fiber Jar you looked so expressive!! Love your guys's channel and personality!! I am loving this series and the binge is so worth!
Discovered this channel from ActMan's Yu-Gi-Oh video, and am so glad I did. Haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in YEARS, and only know old-school Yu-Gi-Oh, so I love this series. Paul - you're totally right that modern Yu-Gi-Oh is too intimidating for returning or new players; I really have no interest in playing catch up in something so complicated (or at least looks that way; are OTKs even fun?). But this channel has got me rewatching the original anime and playing The Eternal Duelist Soul on a GBA emulator just like the old days. This channel, and particularly this series, has been a joy! Sidenote: during the opening parts of these videos, I can remember exactly how new cards smell
This is honestly my favourite Yugioh series on TH-cam right now. Absolutely loved Paul's fiend deck, some great tech choices. The addition of Dark Beginning seems great too, we did something similar in our internal Progression Series, it really helps out the card pool.
This was one of my favourite episodes of the series for sure! Incredible duel and was great to see you both focus more on types with the amount of cards you now have to build with! Loving the new packs at the end of the duel and love that whoever loses gets that small advantage with an extra pack. Seriously you two are NAILING this series and I can't wait for the next episode :D
Awesome Duel! I thought the use of fiber jar was a great twist to the duel. I also agree with Alec that even though he won the Duel, the draw of cards he got was a bit unlucky.

There was a missplay after the Fiber Jar. Alec did a second normal summon on his turn. If he didnt, Paul would win the game with a direct attack.

Yeah Call of the Haunted says 'when it leaves the field.' I checked and all the erratas of it have those words.
I caught it too. Can’t blame em too much tho. It was a tense situation
They have been playing the old cards as written, ignoring the errata. some old good cards would actually suck with modern errata.

i don't even care about reading the effects since they explain them but i'd love to see the artwork clearly rather than tiny and possibly upside-down

Fiends are kinda underrated in my opinion. They are not Meta by any means, but they sure keep receiving support that makes them good in casual plays, in any generation/format of the game.
I haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh since Invasion of Chaos. Watching this series reminds me of why I fell in love with the game decades ago. I almost want to pick it up again because of this alone, but I know it's a different beast now. Can't wait for the next episode!
Maybe you can play goat format at a local card shop

This was a really good back and forth game. I feel like things have started to balance out again between the two
awesome duel this week. I'm loving this series. To see you guys pulling new cards out of old school packs and building decks around the cards you pull. This just brings me back to the old days.
I'd also like it if you would stay with the old school packs and not go any further than before Synchros :D
what’s interesting about this is, if you go on long enough, you could probably pinpoint when Yu Gi Oh started to become “broken”. even though you guys have banned cards, like pot of greed, it’s still a close match. how many more matches till you start having incredibly long turns or instantly winning after a few turns?
Honestly, the broken nature of Yugioh really just comes from access to everything. Nothing will seem to powerful here since they can only get 1 of each, since they are both using the same card box.

Even a modern deck will play closer to this if they just pull a handful of random boosters. The crazy consistency comes from having 3x of all your best starters and a full extra deck toolbox to access what you need. Look at how many times they resolved pot of greed this game and how many times they just set and passed for their turn
If you follow the Japanese game. It was broken from the start. Leading to some dominate decks very early on. And then a burn deck became meta.
Not to mention Delinquent Duo, Confiscation, and Forceful Sentry were at three at one point. So you could lose your entire hand going second.
And to top it all off, Konami liked to put meta defining cards as promos in 40-50$ games.
Over in the TCG, the game probably broke around the time Yata Lock was introduced to the game.
Early YGO reeks of a game that was made by people who didn't have experience running a card game(which it was), so degenerate cards were abundant. Like Delinquent Duo.
Modern YGO is the result of letting old cards stay legal. If old sets became illegal, power creep wouldn't be where it is today.

Man this really takes me back. I had so much fun watching this. I've always wanted a Fiber Jar as a kid because I really like the artwork.
I would say this is the best rare hunter episode it was super close throughout the whole thing….. this is the type of duel that should be going on today

Man, Dark Beginning takes me back - I dunno if the same was true for the US, but I remember getting a few boosters that were error packs in the sense that they had multiple foil cards in them, IIRC one pack gave me a Jinzo and Relinquished. They were also prone for having the standard rare cards being printed with the wrong name - I can't remember if it was Legendary Fisherman or Mad Sword Beast, but one of them had 'Blast With Chain' as its name, and I had a Gaia the Fierce Knight called 'Last Turn'. The packs with the misprinted names tended to come from the tins released at the time, the ones with multiple foils were store-brought.
Also god, the 'After Genocide' print of 'After the Struggle', I actually still have a copy of that card cause it was such a great botch in trying to keep the game kid-friendly.

Yeah this episode felt so much more fun to watch than the last few. They were good, but the gap between decks felt like it was getting a little too wide and this definitely closed it. Good game to you both.
Paul's deck is going to be nuts with all these fusions and Thousand Eyes Restrict if he gets metamorphosis next episode!!
Oh good, I’m glad they’re adding the packs at the end to give the loser away to catch up with all the good cards they lose to being hunted

Is it me or did Paul "cheated" at 30:49? He had 5 banished cards at 29:58 and when he resolved fiber jar, he only had 4 cards in the banished zone. Possessed Dark Soul just went back to the deck I assume.
PS: I don't play yugioh much, I just watch it, maybe it's a weird ruling issues that I don't know about. Also, I don't think that it would have affected the match that much, but maybe it could have. It could have caused a butterfly effect that reorders every card of the deck and the match wouldn't be the same as it went, who knows.
That's why I prefer automated Yugioh, where small mistakes like that don't occur like Master Duel, so we get the "true" yugioh experience, but real cards do get that vibe, I also get it.
I do love the content.

Adding the reprint packs is a good decision to potentially allow for previously impossible strategies. Some old cards from previous episodes could become viable
Love this series! I was looking through LOD recently and it surprised me just how much type support there was. So I was excited to see how your decks would change and it was even better than I hoped. Seeing Twin-Headed Wolf, Winged Minion, Spirit Ryu, and Dragon's Gunfire work... amazing.
I'm SO HAPPY to see a Polymerization in the game! My vote would be for giving both players a playset of them. It's so painful to see cool fusion monsters pulled knowing they'll never get used. But maybe now we'll see Fiend Skull Dragon or Dark Balter...?

If I could, I would suggest not putting your rare card in the thumbnail anymore. Kinda takes the suspense out of it, we already know what's on the line when that happens.

Paul's deck is so cool. I didn't expect a Fiend deck to work without Dark Necrofear. It's nice to see viable combo's from cards I have never seen in play before.
Also nice to see some Dragon cards to work, near the end of the duel.

Discovered this channel from ActMan's Yu-Gi-Oh video, and am so glad I did. Haven't played Yu-Gi-Oh in YEARS, and only know old-school Yu-Gi-Oh, so I love this series. Paul - you're totally right that modern Yu-Gi-Oh is too intimidating for returning or new players; I really have no interest in playing catch up in something so complicated (or at least looks that way; are OTKs even fun?). But this channel has got me rewatching the original anime and playing The Eternal Duelist Soul on a GBA emulator just like the old days. This channel, and particularly this series, has been a joy!
Sidenote: during the opening parts of these videos, I can remember exactly how new cards smell

This is by far my favorite duel, with back and forths constantly and with such INSANE pulls. This series is amazing.
This is honestly my favourite Yugioh series on TH-cam right now. Absolutely loved Paul's fiend deck, some great tech choices. The addition of Dark Beginning seems great too, we did something similar in our internal Progression Series, it really helps out the card pool.
This was one of my favourite episodes of the series for sure! Incredible duel and was great to see you both focus more on types with the amount of cards you now have to build with! Loving the new packs at the end of the duel and love that whoever loses gets that small advantage with an extra pack.
Seriously you two are NAILING this series and I can't wait for the next episode :D
Awesome Duel! I thought the use of fiber jar was a great twist to the duel. I also agree with Alec that even though he won the Duel, the draw of cards he got was a bit unlucky.
