    Tea's ace monster was "Shining Friendship" because it allows her to go into her main win condition of talking about friendship until the opponents can't take it anymore, and surrender.

    I think Summoned Skull deserves a mention as well.
    In the manga Yugi used it as his ace in his first duel against Kaiba - before he got the deck of his grandpa (or Kaiba his three Blue-Eyes). He also used it in his first duel against Pegasus (the VHS one) to win the game (sadly the timer ran out) - and he also used his own cards rather than his grandpa's deck as well.
    Later during the cermonial duel between Yugi and Atem - while Atem used the Dark Magician Yugi got to use Summoned Skull.
    Summoned Skull got overshadowed a lot by the Dark Magician but I do think it is rather notable that it was Yugi's card from the very beginning before the Dark Magician was even a thing and managed to stick around until the very end

    Having Revival Jam for Marik's/Yami Marik's ace actually make a good amount of symbolic sense. Revival Jam is a type of slime, and the main quality of slime is how moldable it is, you can shape it into almost anything, it can BECOME almost anything. The source of Marik's conflict is that the situation of his life stops him from being anything other than a Tombkeeper, he wanted to see more of the world, he wanted to make more of himself other than the role he was born into, but he couldn't, and that in turn gave birth to Yami Marik.
    To Marik, Revival Jam represents what he can never be, and to Yami Marik, Revival Jam represents the desire that essentially brought him to life.

      Revival Jam imo isn't an ace monster for Marik but a signature card. The difference between a signature card and an ace monster is that the first has meaning to the duelist or like you said has symbolism behind it. The latter is a monster that a duelist frequently uses to win games. There's also a boss monster which is a powerful card used in an archetype deck.

    • @D-Havoc
      @D-Havoc ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Netherwolf6100 The fillers aren't canon, plain and simple. That's why none of those events gets referenced again beyond other filler content. And Joey really doesn't use Red-Eyes in any canon material after Duelist Kingdom unless you really assume he beat Yugi to get it back despite their duel being purposely left ambiguous.

    • @Netherwolf6100
      @Netherwolf6100 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @D-Havoc again, those events aren't "filler". The anime operates on a different universe and timeline than the manga. They're each canon to their own versions. There's a reason why the anime barely recognizes more than half of the events that happens during the Manga's "season 0" or are completely omitted..
      For example, Yugi and Kaiba have many more encounters in the manga before ever reaching the Duelist Kingdom arc, but the anime universe doesn't acknowledge any of these events and in fact, he first episode is the first time the two ever meet. Another is due to the fact that Pegasus *DIES* in the manga, the Entirety of GX and 5D's is non-canon by default because Peagsus plays a reoccurring role in GX and Bonds Beyond Time makes the anine 5D's universe canon to the anime DM and GX universe.
      So yea, don't misuse the concept of "canon" in Yugioh. The manga and anime operate on 2 separate and completely different timelines from each other and don't intersect.

    I think Lava Golem could be a honourable mention/option for Yami Marik; it's a staple in his deck in Yu-Gi-Oh video games like Nightmare Troubadour and World Championship, plus it's quite fitting to showcase his manipulative and sadistic side as shown in his duel against Joey (also Lava Golem is the card sleeve you unlock in Duel Links after you duel 100 times as Yami Marik)!

    Dark magician girl as ace monster for Tea can work if we consider she might be a reincarnation of Mana the apprentice of Mahad, as the two share some facial resemblences. Most of the ace monsters have their origin in ancient egypt (solomon moto with exodia, Atem with the Dark Magician, Kaiba with the Blue eyes) and Mana never fused her soul with her Ka (like Mahad and Kisara did), so she should be able to reincarnate like the others and she was close to Atem.

    Joey also has a special role for Time Wizard. It was his backup rarest card for Battle City, and a major card for him in Waking the Dragons.

    For Yami Bakura, I was thinking his ace would be Diabound Kernel, a level 5 DARK fiend with 1800 ATK/1200 DEF. It has an effect where it gains 600 ATK each time it attacks and it can banish itself until the next standby phase to lower an opponent's monster's ATK by Diabounds current attack (basically an older Linkuriboh that's also a quick effect). The reason for this is because of the connection he has of it in his past life in ancient Egypt. As Bandit King Bakura, he was the last living villager of Kul Elna and the only survivor in the series of gruesome human sacrifices that created the millennium items. His hateed for the royal family grew so great that his ka manifested the evil spirit known as Diaboun Kernel, and he would go on to use this spirit to steal the millennium items and awaken Zorc the dark one (who he would later fuse with via both of them splitting a portion of their souls in the millennium ring, thus creating Yami Bakura)

    Actually, in the Manga, blue eyes was originally meant to be Yugi's ace card. Yugi borrowed the card from his grandpa to show off after school, causing Kaiba to then steal it. Yami Yugi dueled him to get it back in a shadow game, and becauses Kaiba's heart wasn't in the monster, it self destruction, giving Yugi the win to then Mind Crush Kaiba as punishment.
    It was only later on when the series started to turn more towards duel monsters, that Kaiba was given the 3 other Blue Eyes to use as his ace cards, which is when he then rips up the fourth copy.

      Considering that the card game was originally meant to be a one off thing in the manga (with Kaiba originally meant as a one off villain of the week), there's no reason for Yugi to have BEWD as an ace card. Because the card game was never gonna return originally since it was only intended as a one off thing. Why have an ace for something that was never meant to return.

    And yet it's Solomon who gets the card that literally has "Gambler" in the name. Shimon Muran himself wouldn't have been a card after all as he wasn't a spirit creature like what Mahad had become and him being a gambler when he was younger would strike as an absurdly odd thing given his major role in Atem's court of grand vizer).

    I think it's also worth mentioning that as of Season 5, Diabound Kernel is objectively Yami Bakura's ace:
    • It was his ace in the Dark RPG (just as DM & Blue-Eyes were for Yugi & Kaiba respectively) and the centerpiece of his early strategy i.e literally just defeating as many creatures as possible with it (such as Mahad's Illusion Magician & Slifer) to absorb their powers & grow stronger;
    • They share a spiritual connection, as Diabound was created from the hatred borne in Bakura following the Kal-Elna Massacre (of which he was the sole survivor);
    • It was the _only_ reason Bakura challenged Kaiba in the present - having Diabound defeat Blue-Eyes in battle let it absorb White Lightning which could contest the Egyptian Gods when he entered the Dark RPG (which ultimately saved his life because it stopped Obelisk from just smiting him instantly).

    1. In Duel Links when a Character is unlocked you unlock their Ace-Cards or Skills which give you them as Example if you Unlock "Odion" you unlock "Embodiement of Apophis" and the Ace-Monsters have an Animation to but also have Boss-Monsters as Example when you summon "Obelisk the Tormentor" with either "Seto Kaiba (DM=Duel Monsters)", Seto Kaiba (DSOD=Dark Side of Dimension) or with Yami Yugi then he has also a Animation and if we Look to Master Duel their have Boss-Monsters a Animation but Ace-Monsters are not because Blue-Eyes is a Ace and Boss Monster he has in Duel Links and Master Duel a Animation when it is Summoned but Dark Magician Girl not she only has a Animation in Duel Links (2 different Animations too) when she is summoned by "Yami Yugi, Yugi Muto DM, Tea Gradner DM, Tea Gardner DSOD or Yugi Muto DSOD" but not in Monster Duel because she is "just" an Ace Monster but no Boss Monster
    2.. I would say my 2 Boss-Monsters are from 2 Yu-Gi-Oh Characteres the First would be Kites "Galaxy-eyes Photondragon" and the second one would be Yuya and Yutos "Odd-Eyes Raging Dragon" but more "Galaxy-Eyes" because i remember how cool i found this card then i was watching the episode for the first time where the Drgaon appears for the first time in the middle of the Street in the Rain and the complete Time has Stopped so Kite and Yuma could Duel on the Street

    - Magician of Faith gets her effect when flipped up, not flip summoned. Flipping face up occurs either via Flip Summon or when attacked. Flip Summoning can only happen on your turn, meaning you'd have to spend a turn setting her face down as your only normal summon for the turn, then flip summon her next turn because monsters can't be flip-summoned the turn they are set face-down. However, her getting the effect on just flipping alone means that her effect can activate sooner than your next turn while she acts as a damage sponge against an opponent's attack, and the ease of pulling her effect off, paired with being able to pull a Graceful Charity or Pot of Greed or something is why she's always been hotly contested as legal. There were some ways to deal with this, but a lot of the time, if set a Magician of Faith, they were likely to get the effect because it would often get attacked while stalling for a better card to use in the duel. You could Relinquished, Thousand Eyes Restrict, Mind Control, Nobleman of Crossout, Exiled Force, Mystic Swordsman lvl 2, or Black Luster Soldier Envoy it, but you'd have to draw them and pay some cost for most of those, and some of those cards were either limited or banned at the time.
    - I don't know if you were using Weevil's description for the effect of Cocoon of evolution, or if you were stating card effects, but if it's card effects, Petit Moth does not evolve into Cocoon of Evolution, and none of the moths evolve further. Cocoon is equipped to Petit Moth, then that Moth and Cocoon can be tributed at different stages to bring out varying strengths of moths, but none of the other Moths can evolve or be re-equipped with Cocoon of Evolution.

    I play the Pendulum Magicians, so the boss is Zarc, but the ace monster that I use the most is probably Darkwurm because he can set the pend scales, if in the gy brings itself back, has 1800 atk, and with multiple they can create dark rebellion monsters as well.

    I'm pretty sure that the Battle City bios in the beginning of the BC Arc doesn't show their signature cards but the rarest cards in their decks. As you know, according to BC rules, the loser of the duel have to give their rarest card to the winner.

    Okay, for Tea/Anzu...Shining Friendship. Not just b/c she used it in Duelist Kingdom, but has anyone played against her in one of the games???
    She gets a bunch of low level monsters out (like Shining Friendship) and then equips it with United We Stand - and now there's a little puffball at like 4,000 attack or something. And that's just one monster. If she has another United We Stand and she puts that on another monster, you're looking at another 4,000-ish+ monster. Or she puts it on the first monster...
    Regardless, while not canon, i think this combo is very thematically accurate for her than the others.
    (Fun duel imo. Easy to make a deck specifically to counter it once you know the strategy - but it was such a fun surprise when I first played against her.)

    Alternate boss monsters: -
    Yugi - Black Luster Soldier since it was originally meant to be a foil for the Blue Eyes White Dragon given their identical stats (and BLS was supposed to be a normal monster instead of a ritual).
    Kaiba - XYZ Dragon Cannon since it was a stylized mech of sorts which doubles as a weapon and Kaiba made his fortune by turning his dad's arms company into a tech/gaming company. That and the machine aesthetic suits his preference for tech over magic.
    Joey - I agree with the warrior type being his default. However, I would argue that Gearfried is more a signature than Flame Swordsman given the fact that it has an upgraded form in Gearfied the Sword Master. Also, the story of Gearfired needing armor to restrain his power is a good allegory for Joey's inner strength/ hidden potential.

    I feel like the distinction between an ace and a boss monster is useful for duelists that have many duels/ upgrades to their monsters, but you seemed to be reaching too hard to make the separation for some of the less prolific duelists in my opinion. It makes sense to cut through the many variations straight to Dark Magician or Utopia for Yugi and Yuma, but for someone like Serenity or Tristan I don't think there's really a need to draw a line between their ace and boss monsters. I actually got tense for a moment when it looked like you might argue Jinzo wasn't Roba's ace. Mako and his fisherman are a very good example of the star of their deck/ most emotionally important card not always being the strongest, I definitely agree there.
    There are also other one/ two off duelists like Panik and Bonz for whom I do agree with you choice of aces; In both cases their entire deck somewhat hinges around those cards so their aces in the sense of being core to their strategy. I wasn't expecting Revival Jam for Marik but once you explained it I actually do agree, the slime is something he leans on a lot in his duels.
    For Mai I find it a bit odd to say you'd have picked duster as your ace if you were her, since duster is basically a "signiture spell" along with elegant egotist and phoenix formation, themed to match harpy lady as archetype support. If anything duster is a power card in line with the boss monster category.
    There's an argument for Summoned Skull and Gaia being backup aces for Yugi based on their introductions in the manga, and BLS was originally presented as being a ritual based Gaia upgrade. In a similar vein Dark Necrofear is even more clearly Bakura's ace because manga Destiny Board itself is the card that needs necrofear in grave to function.

    Yeah, I also think that Flame Swordman fits Joey the most. The warrior on the front line with burning fashion compared to mysterious wizard-like Yami and prideful, power-focused Kaiba. Btw, Kuriboh is fitting as Yugi ace since it is mostly his image: soft and naive but always there to save the day while Dark Magician is for Yami

    I have actually been working on a Yugioh DM Reboot idea for some time now. Not only do I give Tea and Tristan proper decks, aces, and duels, I even give them connections to Atem’s past and reasons why those are their ace cards. I make Joey already have Red-Eyes and instead gave Rex his own unique dinosaur version called “Red-Eyes Dino Dragon” (think Red-Eyes Zombie Dragon, but with Dino-support instead of zombie-support). Tea uses a Parshath Deck focused on counter traps with her ace being the Parahath Synchro. Tristan plays a Battleguard deck with his ace being either Battleguard King or maybe I’ll make a new Battleguard card to be his ace. My version of the story starts with Duelist Kingdom (no RPG-like rules this time), then season two is Battle City with the Memories Arc (no virtual world arc here), and the final season is Grand Tournament plus an expanded version of Dark Side of Dimensions. Seasons 1 and 2 have every summoning bar Pendulums and Links (mostly due to the only decks that would use one or the other or both being Tea’s deck) and season 3 has them both plus Cyberse (which in my version are the only group of cards that can work properly on the god cards due to them not being around last time they got lose which makes them not afraid of the gods like all the other types are)!
    Sorry it’s long, I heard talk of a redo for DM and thought I would share!

    When I was a kid I liked Mystical Elf and Gemini Elf. But now as an adult, I like Mystical Elf more so that would be an ace card that I relate to the most. The funny thing is, I have five collectibles of Dark Magician Girl in my room. So, there's a little confliction, I guess. Out of many decks I've created, Mystical Elf is only in two of them. One deck is a spellcaster and dragon deck with two extra deck monsters, and the other is a basic meta deck with no extra deck. The meta out of it is a little range of Yubel, Guardian Eatos and Dreadscythe, and the Seal of Orichalcos.

    ages ago, when i frequented my local shop, my ace card was Cannon Soldier.
    the first rare i ever pulled from a Metal Raiders pack back in 2004. even if he didnt vibe with the theme of my deck, he always had a place in it.
    and my reputation with him became such that, anytime he hit the field, the other regulars at that shop knew they were about to get shot in the face.
    once upon a time, i was running frogs. and with Cannon Soldier launching Ronintoadins was able to inflict 5000 damage in a single turn.
