This episode had a positive message as well: Empathy. Billy has empathy for Chris. Chris has empathy Hayley. Jaden has empathy for Chris. The humanity in this episode, and how it applies to our current times, and the phenomenal acting all make it one of my favorites. And after binging the whole series it's a relief that so far this season gives me less of a headache after.
Yeah it was a great episode and the empathy displayed in the movie was great. I've only watch season 5 and have 4 seasons to enjoy! is this episode one of the best?
It was honestly nice how he treated the man that he kidnapped like an actual person. He felt bad for him, he helped, and he reassured him that everything will be ok
definitely showed compassion and more empathy than others would in that situation but at the end of the day he held him hostage and put a gun to his head, the hostage was so scared and sick that he threw up under the bag wrapped on his head. i get what ur saying but it sounds kinda funny 😭
Not nice, he was a psycho who snapped. He kidnapped him, held him against his will, threatened to kill him - showing empathy after that isn't worth much and it's like exhibit A of how a Stockholm syndrome works or forms in a victim - dude was kidnapped and his life put in danger, in a way also because the kidnapper couldn't handle his guilt over playing with his phone instead of focusing on the road, which could've helped him avoid an accident.

Another really interesting detail I'd like to mention is when Chris is waiting "in line" while listening to their playlist, the song "daydreaming" by radiohead plays In the background (the intro of the song to be specific). Thom Yorke, the frontman of the band allegedly wrote the song about his wife's death through cancer in 2015, being a metaphor how Chris' wife died as well. This time it's just not cancer, but social media. This episode was truly touching the first time because I realised the message immediately and had to stop myself from just skipping to the next episde. I was also tempted to check my phone as soon as the credits roll, but also noticed this toxic behaviour I was so addicted to already. Even if everyone checked their phone for only a second, from the sad look on their faces I think it was Jayden who got shot and not the man they only know as the hostage taker. Maybe we'll find out in a later episode... The dialog between Bauer and forgot his name already as well as the final struggle between Jayden and him in the car is also an example of real communication vs. what it looks like from the outside/on social media. Noone looking at them from afar or following the "story" would have guessed his supposed victims were trying to save the hostage taker's life. The news feed in the end would read "Man X killed in hostage situation involving Smithereen, company spokesperson: "We are devastated"
Wow amazing point. I do think if the sniper accidentally killed Jayden and Chris survived that, Chris would have quickly retrieved his own gun and shot himself. So I think either way in the end he wouldn't have been "robbed" of exiting the world. In a situation like his after watching this story, maybe it's weird to say- but I actually felt BAD for Chris that both the cops and his hostage weren't LETTING him kill himself. He wasn't even trying to make a huge statement to get the CEO to do something, or to create big social change. He literally just wanted to "say his piece" then leave. He seems so relieved and at peace after their talk. Putting him in prison feels like a cruel punishment when he never truly endangered his hostage, the cops with help of people posting about the "replica" gun did that. Social media IS manufactured to be like gambling, cocaine, etc- all addictions that hijack our brains' dopamine pathways. Just as we treat addictions as illnesses and blame drug manufacterers and traffickers, casino owners etc...the same should be true of social media users vs creators.
I liked this episode but I have the feeling that we will no longer have the same ending excitement and depression like with White Christmas, Arkangel, White bear, San Junipero, Shut up and dance, Hated in the Nation, Nosedive and Playtest. Those were the days. Besides, this season had “happy endings”
i think is in part cause now were get used to black mirror "twists", the first seasons are not perfect but bring a feeling that any series had at that moment, now everyone has the general idea what black mirror vibe is, i really liked this season cause they laid back about the dark and depressing feel in previous seasons but mantaining the weird and tension it has, just in a minimalistic way and more "natural", i feel its hard for a series like black mirror stay with the hype cause nearly everyone wants more weird and dark twists (i kinda wanted too) and that could go wrong too or turning too cheesy
@@livcaitbff I totally agree, deep down if you really think about it they weren't happy endings at all. People are saying that Black Mirror only has happy endings now as if they never made any episodes with a happy ending. Those people either didn't watch every episode or they didn't really get the message behind them.
bryce: because like haley said- “this needing to know, it’s never going to stop”, and that’s probably why you’re watching this video in the first place me: pikachu face
18:00 I interpreted Billy's eyes closing as him being almost the only person whose eyes aren't stuck to their phone. The song is playing "can't keep my eyes off of you" right as they show him close his eyes. But it's also a position of privilege, he's in charge, he knows exactly how things work (many others are simply manipulated by it)... he could be closing his eyes to the addiction everyone else is in- through perhaps a combo of privilege and character- and/or closing his eyes to the consequences of his actions, whether through willfulness or lack of power even though he has "all" the power. Chris also had his eyes OFF of social media unlike everyone around him (emphasized in the episode before he picks up his hostage)- but only as a result of huge loss, grief and most of all- shame. Only after that does he have his eyes opened to the fault that should be placed on the companies for the state he was in before the tragedy.
The mom didn't get in her daughter's account, though. She was given a 10 symbol password and she typed in 13. So it was either a showrunner f-up, or the mom typed it in wrong on purpose, so she could keep trying.
I really appreciate your analysis man! Your attention to detail is absolutely brilliant. After watching every episode, I watch your analysis to get a better perspective on the gist of the episode
So looking forward to the more videos on the 2 other eps. This one was great! You always explain everything so nicely. It's so sad that there will only be 2 other videos and not more than that on the new Black Mirror.
Worth mentioning the part about suicide by Jayden, how it ruined his whole families life and his mum became a meth addict. There’s no escape, in the real world and out of the real world. And the suicide references of the mums daughter how it destroyed her life. To show that even as a maniac who took a man hostage, suicide still just was not an option for him as his own hostage intervened.
I've seen all episodes of Black Mirror several times and I have to say, that your explanation videos are so great. I'm always missing a few points. It's so scary how precise Black Mirror really reflects today's modern life.

Why doesn't this video have more views?? It's really well made and I think it truly encapsulates what the writers are trying to convey. Honestly a very well made video 👍🏾👍🏾
Modern society is entirely based on addiction. Whether it's, media, social media, exercise, money, or actual drugs. We are kept in a constant state of seeking out the next little hit of dopamine to provide meaning to our lives, because modern society fails miserably to give our lives meaning. Modern society is based on production and consumption. Not enlightenment, not the pursuit of knowledge, not the betterment of people and the world. We are nothing more than consumers. Slaves to a system doesn't care about life, only profits.
I’ve watched all of your reviews and I can honestly say I appreciate your time and effort This was an important episode and your review made sure we realized that Thank you!

I have 3 things to say: - This was the only good episode of season 5 (and it was so good that it restored my faith in the show's future. Let's be honest, Andrew Scott was ducking amazing..). - (Other than that...) Black Mirror is ducking brilliant. - We need analyses like yours to fully appreciate its genius. I feel like I repeat myself on each of your videos, but keep up the great work!
I was almost an adult when the net started to get universal. I remember the time before it and the contrast is huge. So many little things have changed. Its eerie when you really think about it. We see the same rate of social and cultural change in a year that ALL prior recorded generations would see over multiple decades, even centuries as you go further back. Thats gotta be having some effect right?
To be honest, I thought not revealing who was shot in the car was to share the message that it didn't matter. That when we look at the headlines for horrible tragedies in the world, they're just that. Headlines and stories than hardly seem real on your phone screen. But we as the viewers thought otherwise, wanting to know and caring about how it ended because we experienced the hostage situation and got to know the characters in the car. But, I definitely missed a whole lot more of the point of the show.
One part I wanted more clarification on.... In the episode, Chris tells Jaden that his gun is a replica, while Smithereens' higher ups were listening in and forwarded the info to police, who then found out that was a lie when Chris fired a warning shot. Why did Chris lie to Jaden in the first place? Did Chris know that Smithereen was listening in on the phone?
Dashadvent Chris was just trying to reassure jaden to make him feel less scared. Jayden said his mum is going to worry and Chris was trying to tell him that he’ll be alright because the gun is a fake (when it’s not).
@@paulakrastina5642 I think you got the right answer. And it's also a mini cautionary tale about sharing information in the internet without confirming if it's true first.
Frightening since as the episode ended I was in tears looking at the addiction people have for receiving notification and the next thing I did was immediately checked my phone notification...that hit me
I've watched all the episodes of The Black Mirror at least thrice but something about smithereens really hit home. The ending when people just checked their notifications and moved on, that made me feel terrible!
Just watched this after putting my Black Mirror watching on hold for a long while. As someone who still struggles with self-forever-sleep thoughts, this was such a heavy, heavy episode. It deals so much with loss and with grief, and with the ideas of accountability of loss. I love how that was set against the themes of information gathering, and how the internet does the job of detectives so much faster. Damn. Now I know why i took that break, but I'm excited to get back into this incredible show.
I also think the eyes opening were a representation of becoming aware of the issues society faces and the eyes being closed a representation of turning a blind eye and ignoring the issues even after becoming aware of them
great explanation :) the way i saw the eyes opening at the start and then closing at the end was that the story was an eye opener to what is really going on, telling the story of how reality really is but the eyes closing at the end shows that people choose to close their mind to it all and carry on even if they know the truth
Thank you!! Now I fully understand this episode. It’s pretty hard to shutdown those social media apps bu what I’m doing and I suggest you guys as well, just turn off the notifications. You can also limit your use in those apps. That way you can still be connected and relevant and use it while you are bored but use it much less.
This episode got to me on a personal level. I was also the whole cliche, but now I'm barely on any social media. I only have my FB account so family and certain friends can get in touch with me if needed. I deleted everything else, and it's been nice. If anything, i get annoyed when FB notifies me about when someone posted on their wall. Even with notifications shut off, I'll occasionally get a stupid notification. It's like they're trying to get me back on the platform. Great analysis though. I enjoy these videos very much

I couldn't watch this episode without having to remind myself that it wasn't a sherlock episode because Moriarty
I thought he looked familiar!! It's Moriarty!

"Today I'm going to *quickly* talk about black mirror season 5 episode 2"
Proceeds to post his longest Black Mirror Explained video to-date
He sure did speak quickly though
Jayden did not dieee
'cant take my eyes off you'
perfect song choice
Half the episodes in S4 had happy endings lol
And even though Arkangel ends bleakly, it's a very underwhelming episode in my opinion
Don't really think ep 1 or 2 had happy endings. Episode 1 masked itself as a happy end, but if you analyse it, it's pretty sad
@@livcaitbff I totally agree, deep down if you really think about it they weren't happy endings at all. People are saying that Black Mirror only has happy endings now as if they never made any episodes with a happy ending. Those people either didn't watch every episode or they didn't really get the message behind them.
I actually thought that Nosedive had sort of a happy ending. I feel like the main character felt so free at the end of the episode
bryce: because like haley said- “this needing to know, it’s never going to stop”, and that’s probably why you’re watching this video in the first place

I honestly thought the lady that lost her daughter was the same one from Arch angel - it would have been a major easter egg
@California Winter No, there were 2 - - and it was 10 symbols *with* them.
Gretchen good point, why would she want to keep trying? i don’t understand. is she scared of discovering the truth???
i literally haven’t watched any season 5 black mirror ending explains because i’ve been waiting for yours lmaooo
You forgot about the Ashley O #
I really appreciate your analysis man! Your attention to detail is absolutely brilliant. After watching every episode, I watch your analysis to get a better perspective on the gist of the episode
That's awesome to hear, thank you
He made as much money so to escape the world he polluted. - what a great quote.. Thanks man ☺
The outcome of Chris’s life was reduced to smithereens 😏
😂
I thought that’s why the episode was names so and forgot that that was the name of the app.
@@tiffanypersaud3518 I thought that too haha
So looking forward to the more videos on the 2 other eps. This one was great! You always explain everything so nicely. It's so sad that there will only be 2 other videos and not more than that on the new Black Mirror.
Thank you, they're coming soon
Worth mentioning the part about suicide by Jayden, how it ruined his whole families life and his mum became a meth addict. There’s no escape, in the real world and out of the real world. And the suicide references of the mums daughter how it destroyed her life. To show that even as a maniac who took a man hostage, suicide still just was not an option for him as his own hostage intervened.
I've seen all episodes of Black Mirror several times and I have to say, that your explanation videos are so great. I'm always missing a few points. It's so scary how precise Black Mirror really reflects today's modern life.
I had a really hard time finishing this episode cause I couldn't stop crying. Andrew Scott really nailed it
This episode made me cry
same
highly highly underrated episode
Agreed!
Facts
I specifically waited for your explanation because they're so much better and in depth than the other wants. I've been checking the channel since the season came out
Love this
I thought they shot both of them TBH. The police mentioned they were rcovering from a shooting that was mishandled a few days before hand
Why doesn't this video have more views?? It's really well made and I think it truly encapsulates what the writers are trying to convey. Honestly a very well made video 👍🏾👍🏾
My favorite analyzer. Please do the other 2 new episodes!
Thank you, they are on the way
Modern society is entirely based on addiction.
You have the best analysis videos on TH-cam! Looking forward to the other analysis vids for the other two episodes
Thank you!
I’ve watched all of your reviews and I can honestly say I appreciate your time and effort
This was an important episode and your review made sure we realized that
Thank you!
Ah shit here we go again
i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. probably my fav episodes in black mirror
What I like to do is watch a black mirror episode, wait a week or two, when watch your analysis, then rewatch the episode to get more out of it. Great video 👍
Oh i soooo loved Andrew Scott's performance
I have 3 things to say:
- This was the only good episode of season 5 (and it was so good that it restored my faith in the show's future. Let's be honest, Andrew Scott was ducking amazing..).
- (Other than that...) Black Mirror is ducking brilliant.
- We need analyses like yours to fully appreciate its genius.
I feel like I repeat myself on each of your videos, but keep up the great work!
It was nice seeing Eric Foreman growing up to be successful
19:04 my favourite social media app, Fallout Shelter.
I’m a dude and this made me cried there’s something I can relate to
This was my favourite episode of the season. The acting was amazing.
Is it bad that I was watching the video, got a Twitter notification, and clicked without a second thought?
Great analysis of a great episode. Made me think a lot, and you captured the essence perfectly. Congrats, keep it going!
Thank you, that means a lot!
the 14:30 part where you explain the same "needing to know" reference from the episode itself is just pure genius!
Such a good show. I’m obsessed
Right?! haha
Chris didnt wanna harm Jaden in any way, neither physically nor psychologically. Thats pretty much it.
I think he wanted to check if they are listening.
@@paulakrastina5642 I think you got the right answer. And it's also a mini cautionary tale about sharing information in the internet without confirming if it's true first.
chris saw someone posted in social media that his gun was fake..the kid from outside posted it coz he heared from the police..
They could’ve put the title of Anyone Who Knows What Love Is on the playlist. Such a missed opportunity
dude your explanations make me think Charlie Brooker is your best friend DAMN 👏🏾
I've been waiting for your analysis video on the newest episodes!! Hope to see one for Ashley Too and Striking Vipers
as soon as i saw billy bauer i was like
“TOPHER GRACE?!?!”
Same!
Wow ... that was powerful, thank you always for your in-depth analysis
Frightening since as the episode ended I was in tears looking at the addiction people have for receiving notification and the next thing I did was immediately checked my phone notification...that hit me
13:43 that's actually scary true for even the real life CEO's..
I know right?
your analysis' are incredible. i'm so glad i stumbled upon your channel.
Thank you!
I just watched this and wanted some explanation and couldn’t find anyone talking about it!!! Thank you ⭐️
Glad i could help
Excellent analysis. I liked the comment "The outcome of a man's life has reduced to mere notification..." Very thoughtful
Yes I was waiting for this💀 for every episode I literally always watch an ending explained for it but only on this channel 😭😭
Awesome analysis. Not only about Smithereens but about society's "need to know" dopamine addiction as well.
this is so accurate lmao "that's probably why you're watching this video in the first place"
Thank you!! Now I fully understand this episode. It’s pretty hard to shutdown those social media apps bu what I’m doing and I suggest you guys as well, just turn off the notifications. You can also limit your use in those apps. That way you can still be connected and relevant and use it while you are bored but use it much less.
Honestly one of my favourite episodes
You deserve to write your own black mirror episode one day
This video was soooo well done! And damn! Immediately when this episode ended, I went to twitter to see what happened! Damn. Well done bro, well done.
Thanks, that's awesome to hear
This episode got to me on a personal level. I was also the whole cliche, but now I'm barely on any social media. I only have my FB account so family and certain friends can get in touch with me if needed. I deleted everything else, and it's been nice. If anything, i get annoyed when FB notifies me about when someone posted on their wall. Even with notifications shut off, I'll occasionally get a stupid notification. It's like they're trying to get me back on the platform. Great analysis though. I enjoy these videos very much
FINALLY!!!!
Edit: I also loved Topher Grace's performance.
My favorite Black Mirror explanation channel!
Thank you very much
Please do a USS Callister explanation. It's the most powerful episode from season 4. Btw thanx for your videos. I have watched all of them. Huge fan from Africa👍
Thanks for watching! I can definitely say that you should expect an analysis on that episode very soon!
