  • What makes something great? What is the difference between genius and mediocrity in art and film?
    This is a clip from the upcoming Under The Skin podcast with me Russell Brand and the fantastic comic, film director and author Richard Ayoade! You may know Richard as Moss from the IT Crowd, the host of Travel Man and The Crystal Maze but also from the comedy cult classic Garth Meringues Dark Place! Agreed. I’ve noticed watching bits of Travel Man season 9 that he’s loosened up a bit & become more warm & sincere. He’s obviously grown more comfortable with himself - perhaps it’s having children, perhaps he’s been working on himself away from the spotlight. In this particular instance, his naturalness probably also emanates from the earnest nature of Russell’s podcast (it would be really disrespectful to come on here & just deflect with acerbic humour), & his respect for Russell’s intelligence & insight (where Russell would easily see through his humour-as-defence-mechanism, being a master practitioner of it himself!)

    Mediocrity is simply a fear of change which is easily overcome. Greatness is a culmination of characters within the same person that culminates in a single instance of misunderstanding or seeing the bottom on a window by laying down on the ground to get a different perception/ perspective. Thank goodness, Russell, you are pursuing the journey and not demanding your end. Good to watch.

    • @pixiescott9616
      @pixiescott9616 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think mediocrity is "simply" a fear of change... It's more like a lack of ambition and drive. You can't easily overcome medicrity, it takes hard work. But I agree with ayoade, the world places too much emphasis on greatness

    • @perspexsavant4787
      @perspexsavant4787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wish you were here Pixie because I can also prove it is easy to change. I think the feeling of entitlement is a lack of empathy and hard to change. But mediocre people are successful in one area for sure - they are absolutely successful in not being at the top and not being at the bottom. That is a LOT of work. However, I do get your point. I think we disagree on mediocrity. I don’t see mediocre as lack of ambition , so I think that’s where we part. I see mediocre as lack of direction for the individual so they follow the pack, and “the pack” is where mediocre lives and breathes neither leading nor being pulled...just floating on the tide waiting to see their own direction in life, and that can be taught very easy. I know cuz I was that guy in my 20’s. My entire life changed in five days and on purpose and it was easy... with a mentor showing me a formula for finding...me.

    • @pixiescott9616
      @pixiescott9616 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@perspexsavant4787 Ooh, fair enough. If you compare medicrity to being an outlier, then yes. But if you compare it to greatness, then I think it usually requires some form of extreme dedication to overcome.

    • @perspexsavant4787
      @perspexsavant4787 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @pixiescott. Yeah, I don’t see mediocrity as a laziness most of the time because there is another bracket for those which you define. I call them losers😂😂😂. So, if we associate mediocrity with being a leader. Most mediocre people don’t want to leaders. They WANT to be behind the scenes. So, you are right, it takes that sub-group of mediocrity a HUGE amount of “overcoming” because they don’t want what we might be pushing them into. To be honest, my wife is one of these types. She just doesn’t want the responsibility to fall on her for the positive or negative outcome (which is why I watched this video). My wife is a great person, a super mom, and a great wife. You know how guy can stand around and gossip negatively about their wives? I listen but I really don’t have anything negative to say about her. If ladies do the same thing, I’m sure she has stuff to say😂😂😂 As they say(above)... she is fascinating, but her feelings of accomplishment rests with the leader who achieves success. She doesn’t need thanks or notoriety, and she’s a freaking powerhouse behind the scenes, so in a way, she actually is leading. However, mediocre people that want to be leaders seem lost and without a method or formula to move themselves forward without help. This is what I do, so I have some experience here. In one meeting I can prove to them, I can change their life in a single day. In a week, I can vastly change their lives and physically show them EXACTLY how and where it changed. It is easy and simple. In this group, I’m batting 100%.

    Really great interview. I definitely believe people should embrace their mediocrity, and focus more on their spiritual side. In the spiritual you can accomplish so much more than you can in carnal. Maybe more spiritual more genius. Like prophets or monks.

    Stuff like this makes me so happy Russel Brand was able to conquer his drug dependence, his equal parts hilarious, camp, insightful and inspirational, and the world would certainly be a poorer place without him in it. Very interesting discussion, might actually convince me to subscribe to Luminary :D

    I'd venture that Richard Ayode is a fundamentally epistemological creature, and it's this perennial baseline of cosmic uncertainty that informs all of his endeavors and expressions.
    Of course, that's just my take. It could be anything, really. 🤷🏻‍♂️
