Now Russell has ponytailed his aging hair, with a Karl Marx beard, and Richard is going for the 'dad trying to look young look' with his now close-to-nothing fro, and no facial hair. Also, it's weird seeing Richard not wear a suit.
i honestly expected Brand's energy (based on listening to him many years ago) would drown quieter personalities. But he did an amazing job synchronising with Ayoade and the result was a really chill and interesting talk.
I haven't watched or listened to much of what Brand has been doing recently but he explained at the start of the video that he's been trying to shed a fair amount of that old personality, I think he words were something along the lines that he was reaching for the worst parts of the industry. Maybe this is more who he really is than what we might have seen years ago.

Astounded by Richard's modesty - I provided a tiny bit of hospitality for him at an old job, and he was the only client in my time there to gather the dishes for me when I came to collect them (despite being probably the most well known). Very softly spoken and kind!
This is how conversations go when people listen to each other. Genuinely interested in what each other has to contribute. How lovely. And so nice to not be hurried.
RB doesn't seem interested in any of it. No interviewer in the world peppers a more convoluted response than Russell Brand. He isn't adding anything with his conversational adjectives. His responses are a deflection or colorful displays of vocabulary. Even if his conversations were geared towards a philosophical type, they would still be fatigued with his arm waving and empty rambling.
Can we please get Richard Ayoade to work with Taika Waititi! I would pay to see those two share a lift, but I would pay much more to see them collaborate on a sublimely self-deprecating piece of art.

If you really want to connect the two, I would actually say that more money will mean a poorer listener, because there is a sense of entitlement that is brought to light for many people who are rich, and many of them have poorer empathy.

I think that the combination of her intellect and spiritual beliefs, would compliment Russell perfectly.

Completely disagree. He's confident in his work and his sense of humor but his modesty and awkwardness is not in any way an act. He's not a show off so much as he is someone who's comfortable enough doing what he does. To anyone calling his demeanor fake or forced I recommend you watch him on Graham Norton with Cameron Diaz.

Interesting, as an American that came off quite evidently to me. The travel man character reminds me a lot from the character he plays in the American movie, The Watch. It's normally more difficult for me to interpret English people so I'm surprised by this.
There’s a famous Monty Python interview where they say British humor is about the underdog/“loser” type character and is more “grounded” and American comedy is more about the “winner”/smart-aleck/leader type. And Richard’s taste in comedy is reinforcing that for me

This is a fascinating talk, I usually can't watch/focus on interviews or talks but this really interested me despite not understanding all the references. The calmness and intelligence displayed by both was incredibly comforting as was the mutual respect they show each other.
I've really warmed to Russell Brand from a position of absolute zero. Ayoade On Top is the funniest book I've read this year, I've yet to see the movie though.

My opinion on Russell has quite changed a lot now, because of this and how Richard is with him. The kindness and honesty between the two is pure stuff. And so down to earth compared to ten years ago. There has been, so much that they have both been through. Which has brought them both more gravity in what they are now. And more grounded to the world they live in. And understanding.

Love Richard, he's like the more successful and better version of me!.. And that's fine. It wasn't until 23/24 that I finally started 'owning' my weirdness - and it actually ends up showing off as a rather strange confidence. Anxiety issues, depression, a lot of these were partly fixed in me, all by not judging myself on how others are or how they act. I can never truly fit in, and being brutally honest about that usually fixes all situations, lol.
I'd say they didn't spar, they seemed very chilled out, open and authentic, a state of wanting to learn from each other. Maybe, and absolutely no bad intention, maybe you're projecting or in a more defensive state?
Richard has the endearing quality of being himself and still a character appealing to many. Comedians who endure have built their own shtick but one’s that build a falseness around it don’t endure. Richard firstly appealed to me as Moss, he was actually directed to be himself as a character. That is actually a very respectable and maybe vulnerable quality. Bucket list for me is to meet Richard and thank him for being him
The part where Richard completely disregards his history of entertaining us, really breaks my heart. Moss and Roy were my college heroes. Someone give that man a hug and tell him he deserves some recognition. Great conversation with Mr. Brand!

I adore Richard. He always makes me want more of him. He, as himself, is one of my favorite British people. I would love to just have a conversation with him.

I HIGHLY recommend experiencing the audio version of "Ayoade on Top" that is narrated by Richard. I've been repeatedly listening to it for months now.
I am addicted to it. So much so, I went back and got "Ayoade On Ayoade" and "The Grip of Film" on audiobook, too, even though I own the books. I've been rotating through these three audiobooks for weeks and it never gets old. I laugh so hard sometimes I have to pull over for a second!

I couldn't disagree with Richard more. I try to introduce him and his comedy style to everyone I know because he is hilarious.
@Bles I've always suspected as much. You don't lead the Footlights by being a wallflower. I think he just likes the idea of being shy or sees the utility in it as a platform for which to present ideas. I absolutely adore him/his work though so I'm not complaining.
Completely disagree. He's confident in his work and his sense of humor but his modesty and awkwardness is not in any way an act. He's not a show off so much as he is someone who's comfortable enough doing what he does.
To anyone calling his demeanor fake or forced I recommend you watch him on Graham Norton with Cameron Diaz.

I find so much satisfaction in listening to this conversation between intellectual, deep philosophical thinkers who are also very comedically gifted. It is so rich and interesting. I feel like my mind and soul are both being fed. There’s so much to love about this video and these two men in particular.

Richard is brilliant, I love watching him, listening to him, those flashing eyes, beautiful smile, yes he can be quite cutting, esp in Travel Man (no more however😞), Travel Man just won't be the same without him. I only watched the show because Richard was the host. Best of luck for 2020 Richard.

Interesting, as an American that came off quite evidently to me. The travel man character reminds me a lot from the character he plays in the American movie, The Watch. It's normally more difficult for me to interpret English people so I'm surprised by this.

This is a fascinating talk, I usually can't watch/focus on interviews or talks but this really interested me despite not understanding all the references. The calmness and intelligence displayed by both was incredibly comforting as was the mutual respect they show each other.
I feel like Russell Brand is the type of person to not laugh at jokes, just make a big grin and say "that's very good"

I've really warmed to Russell Brand from a position of absolute zero. Ayoade On Top is the funniest book I've read this year, I've yet to see the movie though.

My opinion on Russell has quite changed a lot now, because of this and how Richard is with him. The kindness and honesty between the two is pure stuff. And so down to earth compared to ten years ago. There has been, so much that they have both been through. Which has brought them both more gravity in what they are now. And more grounded to the world they live in. And understanding.
What a mind treat.

Love Richard, he's like the more successful and better version of me!.. And that's fine. It wasn't until 23/24 that I finally started 'owning' my weirdness - and it actually ends up showing off as a rather strange confidence. Anxiety issues, depression, a lot of these were partly fixed in me, all by not judging myself on how others are or how they act. I can never truly fit in, and being brutally honest about that usually fixes all situations, lol.

Richard has the endearing quality of being himself and still a character appealing to many. Comedians who endure have built their own shtick but one’s that build a falseness around it don’t endure. Richard firstly appealed to me as Moss, he was actually directed to be himself as a character. That is actually a very respectable and maybe vulnerable quality.
Bucket list for me is to meet Richard and thank him for being him
The part where Richard completely disregards his history of entertaining us, really breaks my heart. Moss and Roy were my college heroes. Someone give that man a hug and tell him he deserves some recognition.
