      Nothing more satisfying than shooting some thug through an apartment window and seeing his bloody spray across the curtains... The violence was tame by today's standards, but back in the 90s it shocked many a parent lol

      Yeah it's probably in my top 5 Genesis games. The biggest problem with the game are the bullet sponge/mediocre bosses. If you lose your good weapon late game; it's probably better to just reset the game so you don't have to shoot the bosses 1000 times with your pistol. The bosses aren't very interesting either and don't really have phases or different patterns.

    What an utterly fantastic documentary this is. The opening couple of minutes with everyone in the shops sifting through the titles , and the young lads looking excitingly at the Commodore and then Sega games.... some of my favourite memories revolve around moments like that in the very early 90s. And just seeing the classic "Ocean" logo reminds me of the legendary loading screen themes that got me rocking out as I eagerly awaited the game to load. And Robocop on the c64 was one such game. I found out years later online about the fact that twas released unfinished! I enjoyed what I got to play of it at the time. I utterly loved the arcade game- but the real deal for me is and will be Robocop V Terminator on the Megadrive. That is one of the best shooters Ive every played, and the game gets better and better as you go back to the future later on. Again, this was a fascinating, fantastic documentary. Absolute well done to you, Sir. 👍😃👏👏

      @thermonuclearcollider4418 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, you cannot really blame the devs on the latter: the movie does have a scene set in a church with some gothic undertones and they had to make a whole level out of it...so they created Notre-Dame de Detroit!

    • @tomdavies6368

      I wouldn't say it's ironic. The capability of machines and the expectations of consumers these days mean that developing AAA games is unbelievably expensive, and very hard to do. I love the original Data East arcade version of Robocop. Graphics like that will always look special and exciting to me.

    • @jonathanbowen3640
      @jonathanbowen3640 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the tech now means you could make a game that's super close to the film visually. We're getting close to photorealistic graphics. A modern terminator game could be extraordinary.
      Back then the gams had almost no chance of capturing the visuals of the films.

      @@davidcarlton2513 The recent Terminator Resistance game doesn't looks so interesting to me (or most people) as its inspired more by the more recent stuff like terminator Salvation than the present day (well 80s and 90s) original and T2. They should have made something like Alien Isolation but on streets rather that on spaceship. T3 the redemption game had a tiny bit of this but was still crap.
      I don't even consider Salvation as a Terminator film tbh.
      Robocop Rogue city looks potentially good though

      Yeah, I only became aware of it little more than a decade ago while extensively playing through the MAME32 catalog. I don't remember ever seeing it in an arcade. Actually, even the Robocop 1 arcade game was a pretty rare sight in my neck of the woods: I only ever saw one cabinet in a mountain resort. Anyhow, Robocop 2 was good: it was clearly shaped after Capcom's side-scrolling beat-em-ups of the era like Final Fight. The fact you can have TWO Robocops on screen was awkward but I never thought about the possibility of having Anne instead of the secondo Robo as Oliver says in the video...it would've been intriguing, provided they designed a different combat system for her...something the devs definitely wouldn't have been very happy to do, given how tight budgets and schedules were back then.

      I bought both arcade pcbs (Robocop being the first pcb I ever bought, Robocop 2 some years later) many years ago when I got into arcade collecting. I still have the first one, I honestly can't remember if I still have the second one or if I sold it on! It was pretty good though. The only place I ever saw a Robocop cab was at my local leisure centre (can't remember if it was an original Data East cab or a converted jamma cab though). Played it every time I went there!

    My family ran a video shop as I was growing up. We had a rented arcade machine and one day Robocop appeared. The rental guy ran a ton of coins through the slot so I could play for an hour or two. It became an obsession for me, I'd even steal the odd ten pence just to play it. I got it for the Amiga that xmas. It WAS the arcade game as far as I was concerned.

    The arcade version was so beautiful. I remember me a friend of mine use to document how many times we finished the game with one quarter. He beat me 28-22. My first taste of the RoboCop computer game was at my brother's friend's house in 1989/90. He had an Amiga and he let me have a go on it. Always found it difficult trying to defeat ED209. One time, his mate rented out the film and told me to leave as I was only 11 and it was an 18. In 1991, I went to a family friend's house and his son let me play RoboCop 2 on his Amiga as well and I remember being highly impressed with the graphics and special effects. Never played 3 but heard about it. I think it had come out after the actual film was made in 1991.

    A thing I like about the speccy-based versions is that even if it's old-school hard, it's one of the easier old-school hard games to master for its galaga-like enemy patterns so once you memorize those, it becomes easier to avoid damage or prioritize the enemies that hurt less. It's also fairer than the arcade and NES versions

    As a 90's kid it feels like the 80's was so much more daring with it's potential franchises. Like, you could have a crumb of an idea, and get a decent budget to try it in the hopes of a franchise. Today, if you don't have an established IP and at least a few things that you promise to do like the other big hits, you get laughed out the door

    Great game! I had it on my Spectrum +3 (in fact, still have, and Robocop 2), and also was the very first arcade pcb I bought (which I still have) when I got into arcade collecting about 20 years or so ago!

    only in the 80’s you would see a VHS of a rated R movie have a commercial for the video game tie -in aimed at the younger demographic 😂

    I love Robocop Vs The Terminator on Sega Genesis. It's really amazing in both graphics and gameplay.

    Fantastic video! I still have my disc copy of Robocop for the Speccy, it still plays as good today as it did 25+ years ago. I think Robocop would make an amazing VR game if handled by the appropriate dev team.

    Robocop 3 on the NES. My first ever game bought by my own money and damn, that was a jackpot. Love it till this day, cause gameplay and music are the best.
