  • Dean Jones once described Black Caps legend Sir Richard Hadlee as just another bowler. Big mistake. But then the bunny became the hunter...

      @@benjaminodonnell258 Most batsmen in international cricket had issues with it too, so Jones did something amazing to be fair. His claim to fame should be that he didn't have as much issue as other batsmen. This is the spirit of cricket, friendly rivalries, a bit of cheek thrown towards each other, and a bit of facing the harsh consequences when you did. Jones felt it for sure. The great thing about Jones, is that he never took it to heart. If the bowler screwed him over, he accepted it, and took the L with a smile.

    I think Dean's full quote was" Hadlee is just another bowler. He bowls with the same ball, and it will travel just as fast to the fence". Turned out the only thing that travelled regularly to the fence was Dean Jones.

    I'll never forget the three-ball duck at Adelaide (this video only shows the third ball) - it made it obvious how good Hadlee was at out-thinking batsmen. Hadlee (with a point to prove after Jones's comments in the papers) steamed in and bowled three fast, short-pitched balls which were all waist-chest high by the time they got to Jones. They were quick. I think Jones defended the first two and then nicked the third. It still remains the best micro-lesson in the art of bowling I've ever seen. At the time I thought Jones was arrogant, but having seen him in this video I've changed my mind and enjoy his self-deprecating humour.

    Like every other cricket tragic, trawling through Dean Jones videos after his sad passing away earlier today in India. Genuinely great bat whose career was cut short by Bob Simpson and others. As an ex-pat Kiwi those duels v the master Hadlee were epic (sometimes very brief), but Deano was a one off. His 210 in Madras is one of the greatest Test innings of all time, and before Michael Bevan in ODI's there was Viv Richards and there was Dean Jones. That's as good as it gets. RIP Deano

He's my all time favourite batsmen along with Martin Crowe ... Watching them in the early 90's was amazing and along with Wasim Akram those guys are the ones who made me love the game ... Deano was brilliant for his time, the way he ran between the wickets and how quick he was in the outfield and the way he batted. Such sad news.

    Hadlee is too often overlooked when people talk about great fast bowlers, and I'm saying that as an Aussie. It should also be remembered that there were very few other good bowlers in the NZ team during his time, which made his contributions for his country ever more important.
    I remember a match Down Under against the visiting England team quite a few years ago, maybe at Lilac Hill (Perth) in the mid-late 90s, where Hadlee, Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson were in the same team together. Even though they were all in their mid-late 40s, they absolutely ripped through the Poms and their captain had to take them out of the attack to try to make the match competitive. That says something about champions.

    • @MrT67
      @MrT67 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Bruce, there was a Max Cricket game ( forerunner of 20/20 invented by Martin Crowe) where Hadlee, Jeff Thompson and Martin Crowe were all in the same team against the current full NZ team of the day. Hadlee was 49 and hadn't played a competitive match since he retired 10 years previously. He trained for about 6 weeks so he wouldn't embarrass himself and took 1 for 1 in his first over.
      When his side came in for their second 10 over innings (it was played two lots of 10 overs each alternating), they were well behind. Hadlee and Crowe came together when the invitation side was about 100 runs behind and a few wickets down. They nearly pulled off the win on their own. As they say form is temporary, class is permanent.
