I had the privilege of seeing Hadlee in both phases of his career. Young, fast and a bit crazy at Chepauk in '76. Then surgically precise at Lord's in '83. I can never tire of watching him bowl. It's some combination of poetry and surgery.

The fluidity & artistry of Gower's batsmanship in scoring 70+...Breathtaking. His test average doesn't do any justice to the man's talents. The impeccable line, length & control of Sir Richard... Awe-inspiring. It elevates the achievement of Brendon Kuruppu (201no) on test debut & to a lesser degree Ranjan Madugalle hitting Sir Richard for 3 boundaries in an over. Great memories of my childhood!! I would've loved to witness a certain Yorkshire & England opener(64 - 81)with a watertight defence & great powers of concentration!!

Sir Richard Hadlee of New zeeland really masters the craft of bowling. His bowling is so accurate that it looks as if it has been planned, crafted, programmed. in my view he is perhaps the most skillful pace bowler on this earth.

But some blokes - good teachers/coaches have that ability to make complicated things simple. You may not have heard of Jack Bond (Lancashire minor-great) but he got more out of my (sh*te) batting by pointing out that 'there are only two shots in cricket - forward and back - "and it's only about where you place your left knee"' I got twenty years of club cricket off that and the pleasure to match.
That's the best explanation I've ever heard of "short of length, outside off stump", which we hear over-and-over in test commentary - with approval, or course. "You've got six decisions to make, in a fraction of a second". Thanks Geoffrey! The other genius of this bowling (I know of) was Glenn McGrath.
Geoff is absolutely right! Sir Richard Hadlee is the most 'underrated' Greatest of All-Time Fast bowler ever. The late Great Malcolm Marshall was right up there with Sir Richard. Their bowling performances had to be seen to be believed...absolutely devastating.
He was & still is the World's finest Rolls Royce med-fast. Sir Richard possessed a huge amount of competitiveness as well as being a great technician & thinker of his craft.
Treat to ears hearing this man´s voice. His voice and accent is everything. He belongs to the 2nd or 3rd last generation of actually great charismatic cricketers. I am 22 years old. We all have opinions, but for mine, Hadlee was simply the greatest fast bowler of all time, and their have been some great ones. Mainly for his consistency...he was always "on".
My favourite bowler ever! Where as the great West Indies bowlers brought power and pace, Hadlee was like a marksman with the new ball. Dot Ball after Dot Ball after Dot ball, then a subtle use of variation, and gone! And it wasn't against the tail enders either, but against the very best like Richards, Border, Gower, Botham, Khan, Manjrekar et al Didn't need to go short, and probably the best medium/face paced bowlers ever..
I think if you looked and indeed saw as I did some of the really great bowlers of the past you would describe Hadlee as one of the Greats Bedser who bowled out Bradman at least 6 times is one of the greatest medium fast bowlers along with Maurice Tate. There are at least 5/6 great bowlers in every era..

my most cherished memory i was playing presidents grade cricket in christchurch and we played high school old boys with both dayle and richard hadlee in the team. now richard was in his 50s but i faced two overs or so from him, it is seared into my memory. he didnt get me out but i scored only a couple of streaky singles...
geez mate. every cricketers dream. played against a couple good players in the Hutt Valley. remember a bloke by the name of Petherick? spinning the ball a mile. that was fun, 40 over stuff with 7 guys around the bat. That was an education. hahaha
im a kiwi and I grew up watching players like Sir hadlee, chatfield, lance cairns and Jeremy coney I even had Jeremy coney as a teacher at school. to me hadlee was the best ever kiwi bowler but I read some of the comments and one said he did it by himself and this is unfair to the others exspecialy chatfield. who would stop the runs being scored so the batsmen would have to try and hit hadlee and get themselves out. these are the days that New Zealand cricket had very very good teams. shortly after these we had chris cairns and I would say he did it more on his own. my favourite player of all time is martin crowe . I believe we lost one of the greatest ever kiwis when he past god bless you martin.

I couldn't agree more. He was the spear head of his team, more often than not he had guys plugging the other end, the likes of Chatfield, Lance Cairns who were good bowlers in their own right. Ive read his books, he said he was meticulous in his bowling, studied batsman, and how teams bowled to them, worked hard on his fitness, then statistics became a big influence for him. I believe he is one of the best ever fast bowlers to play the game...and lets not forget his batting, he could easily bat in the top 6 and make runs too...

He did not raise the blood pressure like say Lillee Thompson … He was up there > but you know so was Bedser as a fast medium . Probably one of the greatest. Bowled Bradman at least 6 times. Truman was a classic fast bowler beautiful to watch . As was Ray Lindwall Never saw Larwood but what a classical action. These were all great players . I do not get into the game of saying so and so was the greatest. That is so limiting there are so many in the history of cricket From my perspective they are all great. A lot of the posts here all focus on at the most the last 40 years of cricket That is silly and does illustrate a limited vision and perspective. I ve seen some of the real greats and I include Hadley in that. You Know Hutton Compton miller Lindwall Truman Wes Hall Laker Bedser … Never saw Hammond or Hobbs or Sutcliffe Larwood .. IT is a limited perspective to say that there is one that is greater than all the others . They all great in different ways .. Sir Geoffrey is correct, Richard was lone Warrior for New Zealand almost throughout his career, he was in peak form 1985 to his last match in test cricket, once Desmon Haynes the carribean opener said as he was afraid to face hadlee's bowling.
I do believe some of the best coaches never played at the highest level or even a provincial / county level. Being Australian I haven’t heard of him but I’m sure he was a terrific coach . Certainly now with T20 - hundred etc ; Boycotts coaching style & beliefs are long gone.

This is not a question about bowling, but one about cricket selection. McGrath and Hadlee were the great "corridor" bowlers of their time. Who is to say, at that level, which was better than the other? I would want both in my team. But if I could only have one it would have to be Hadlee every time because he would be an excellent No. 8 or an adequate-to-good No. 7 in any international batting line-up, whilst McGrath would be No. 11. The same applies to the West Indian quicks of that time. All brilliant in their different ways. Impossible to split them. So, if you could only have one, you'd choose Marshall because he knew precisely what he was doing when he had a bat in his hand. The others, far less so.

Everything to do with dodgy food and nothing to do with the pitches. After this, during his career, NZ only toured Pakistan once in the 1984-85 season. So he missed one series.

From my perspective they are all great. A lot of the posts here all focus on at the most the last 40 years of cricket That is silly and does illustrate a limited vision and perspective. I ve seen some of the real greats and I include Hadley in that. You Know Hutton Compton miller Lindwall Truman Wes Hall Laker Bedser … Never saw Hammond or Hobbs or Sutcliffe Larwood .. IT is a limited perspective to say that there is one that is greater than all the others . They all great in different ways ..
One thing I am sure is that they all would have made mincemeat of most of so called greats of today apart from maybe Kohle Anderson .
Sir Geoffrey is correct, Richard was lone Warrior for New Zealand almost throughout his career, he was in peak form 1985 to his last match in test cricket, once Desmon Haynes the carribean opener said as he was afraid to face hadlee's bowling.

Being Australian I haven’t heard of him but I’m sure he was a terrific coach . Certainly now with T20 - hundred etc ; Boycotts coaching style & beliefs are long gone.

We all know it in the nets. Nightmare delivery in the corridor. Have to commit to a shot. Hadlee was the master of line and length.
I vividly remember he was nearly unplayable even on dead Indian wicket, he had tormented all Indian batters on batting paradise

Who would you rather have in your team, Richard Hadlee or McGrath?
Thats easy, Sir Richard of course. as basilbrushnz said, Hadlee carried the team, McGrath had Warne at the other end. Hadlee was a more formidable bowler than McGrath and could bat. I'll Never forget Hadlee getting Chris Smith out for a golden duck first ball of the test match on his debut back in the 80s, pure class man, what a champion

This is not a question about bowling, but one about cricket selection. McGrath and Hadlee were the great "corridor" bowlers of their time. Who is to say, at that level, which was better than the other? I would want both in my team. But if I could only have one it would have to be Hadlee every time because he would be an excellent No. 8 or an adequate-to-good No. 7 in any international batting line-up, whilst McGrath would be No. 11. The same applies to the West Indian quicks of that time. All brilliant in their different ways. Impossible to split them. So, if you could only have one, you'd choose Marshall because he knew precisely what he was doing when he had a bat in his hand. The others, far less so.

Thanks for correction. Ye got 10 wkts in 3 matches and ave was 44.7 per wicket. More than double of his career average 😁 then he never visited pakistan. Coward bowler knew he would get punished again by batsmen. He was just good on friendly tracks

Hadlee was plagued by stomach problems throughout the 1976-77 tour of India and Pakistan and vowed never to return because of it. Everything to do with dodgy food and nothing to do with the pitches.
After this, during his career, NZ only toured Pakistan once in the 1984-85 season. So he missed one series.
Geoffrey lives in the past.macrath was better then hadlee.
