I think Chris summarises the 'why' and 'how' of competitor research really well. I started a free Steam analytics platform Video Game Insights (vginsights.com/steam-analytics) for exaclty these reasons - to make it easier for indie devs to figure out what other games similar to theirs are doing. I think the resources out there that use Steam API are all pretty complementary at this stage - they all show a different angle of the same data.
Just came across this video. Love the content. Not sure if you still reply to these older videos but just one question. If you have fear of someone stealing ideas from your game if you post it too early, would most people copyright their ideas before starting their steam page?
Thank you for enjoying our content! 😊 If you have more questions or want to connect with fellow game developers, we invite you to join our Discord community at discord.gg/indiegamebusiness. It's a great place to discuss game development and share ideas with like-minded individuals. We look forward to seeing you there!
You can't copyright ideas, it doesn't work like that, in some rare cases you can patent it but that's out of the reach of most indies anyway. But, more importantly, almost no game has an idea that is really that valuable. Ideas are cheap, it's implementation that counts. Don't worry about people stealing your ideas, just make the game.
As a person who just started to know about marketing an indie game (Online Multiplayer), got lots of helpful information, Thanks :)
