Interesting story behind what became the Caro Emerald phenomenon by accident: a Dutch songwriting / producing duo had written the song Back It Up and wanted it to pitch it to a Japanese artist and they approach Caro to sing the demo. Once she recorded it they all felt they had hit on something special and where relieved that the song wasn’t taken. From there on they started to develop the Caro Emerald sound and started to approach record labels but no one really was interested in a jazzy vocalist doing modern day easy listening with a bit of a hiphop feel to it (a lot of the songs where built around interesting samples from old records). So they decided to set up their own label Grandmono. They got a bit lucky when the song Back It Up was used for a Heineken commercial which gave them some airplay here in the Netherlands which they then followed with A Night Like This which became a huge hit. They then sort of adopted a strategy of picking out European countries one by one forging partnerships with local independent labels and eventually also had big hits on the U.K. I believe this live session was for the BBC.

Too bad she doesn't make music like this anymore and she admitted at an interview that she only used 50s style image and sound like a marketing tool to promote herself. She dropped this style a few years ago
