    I totally agree. It matters way less WHAT we practice. What makes the difference in our playing is HOW we practice.

    I have found this to be very true.... My ideas and ability to play any melody someone calls out is exponentially increased over a short time..... I used to practice 8bhours a day..... a few years ago.... 🎷

    Can you talk about doubling - do you still play a heavy amount of gigs with clarinet&flute?/Did you do more earlier in your career? Some saxophone players today don’t play doubles and have still been successful, but a lot of other players say it’s a necessity so I wanted to know what your take was on that.

    • @lukejones2929
      @lukejones2929 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Unfortunately not Chad LB but I figured I would get the ball rolling on the topic with an opinion based on what I've seen. To cut to the chase doubling is an absolute necessity unless you are both willing and able to live extremely (extremely!) frugally and don't ever plan on having kids. Your potential gigs/paid studio sessions are cut in more than half by not doubling on flute or clarinet. The money just isn't out there to support the number of talented musicians out in the world and this is especially true for saxophonists who have no place in an orchestra aside from as a guest. This opinion doesn't apply to Europe as things are different for musicians over there (much better imo).

    What do you think is a good daily routine focused on expanding jazz vocabulary?

  • @chadsmith1890
    @chadsmith1890 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Focused practicing without distraction is huge. I remember 20 years ago when we would lock ourselves in the practice room for hours on end. We didn't have notifications buzzing all the time. Just some material, your horn, a piano, and maybe a CD player to lift solos with. I think we were more productive "pre-iPhone" LOL!
    Trust in the process too... This! I wish as a young student I would have just "done it" instead of "overthink it" or try to see the rationale or "how it connected". I probably spent way too much time trying to understand why my teacher wanted me to work on those diatonic patterns or modes. My technique would be 100x better now if I had just gone through the motions and trusted...because applying it once you have the skills is WAAAY easier! Everyone comes to things in their own time but a good mentor will help accelerate the process if you trust them and let them. You gotta get out of your own way sometimes if you want to move forward!
    Goal setting too. This is huge. Breaking down larger goals into measurable steps and just keep plugging away. I love that this is finally being taught because it is a skill everyone needs to have!
    Well said Chad LB! All gems here....now I'm heading back to the shed!

    Whazzup Chad...
    First I pray you and all those you love are safe & healthy. You are on point when you use the word patience. An analogy comes to mind for people striving to lose weight. They may be working out for months and not themselves feel they are progressing...but...one day a friend tells them "oh, I see you've lost weight". Part of the difficulty is we are too close to ourselves. As long as we are taking the proper steps and actions to achieve our goal, IN TIME, we will get there. Thank-you for sharing with us.
    ...peace & blessings...

    Hey chad i have a question: im a piano player and have a bunch of transcription books. I have heard and have been experiencing for myself that reading solos and memorizing them doesnt help you as much as actually transcribing, but i was wondering if in your opinion they can be a helpful shortcut for learning vocabulary if it is combined with lots and lots of listening

    Hey Chad!
    Thanks for all the lovely videos! Really enjoying them and learning a lot from you :)
    I have a question - I'm a rock/metal guitarist who's gotten bored of how guitarists play - lots of notes which are mostly in a step-wise fashion, using multiple areas of the fretboard etc. Basically replacing quality (fewer, but carefully chosen and well-fleshed out notes and phrases) with quantity (lots and lots of notes)
    I've been listening to saxophone playing and phrasing lately and was wondering - could you give me your analysis on the concepts, phrasing and habits that saxophone players tend to have that differentiate them from say jazz fusion guitarists? At first I thought it was something about the limitations and mechanics of the instruments that made players tend to have different habits, then I read that the sax also has 4 octaves so now I'm terribly confused.
    Thanks Chad! :)

      If you practice and memorize the exercises enough they will start to improve your playing dramatically.
