- Today we are back with our 1969 International dump truck trying to get it ready to drive home. After replacing the brake and clutch master cylinders and a little finessing of the brake lines, slave cylinder, and brake booster, are we able to get this truck road worthy for the drive home?
Will we make it 250 miles over two mountains all the way back to the shop without breaking down?

Hello from the UK, tremendous, it's nice to see the rescue of a vehicle like this, especially when you have to improvise and work hard to get home. More please!
Gotta bleed a Master Cylinder before hooking it up to the rest of the hydraulic system... A tube off the outlet into a full reservoir and slow pumps until there are no bubbles. Then hook up the vehicle line to the MC and crack it loose a 1/4 turn from tight and have someone slowly push the pedal to the floor and hold. Tighten line. Release pedal. Crack line, pedal slowly down, tighten line, release pedal. Continue until you have solid pedal. Saves you from having to struggle with sketchy bleeders.

Copper washers can be rejuvenated by annealing them with a torch (heat until glowing hot and let it cool down slowly).
Heat until copper puts off a green glow to anneal,soften.
You can quench immediately in water for successful anneal. No need to slow cool, as with steel.
Only works to restore softness not thickness

I used to drive an International Loadstar dump truck like that one in the middle 60's when I was serving in Germany. I really like those old Internationals, especially with that electric two-speed rear axle. The one I drove was governed at 57 and that's all it could do but it did it loaded or empty. It really was a comfortable truck to drive.
The more you showed on that mid-trip inspection, the more scared I got for you...... Glad you made it home safely.
FYI I'm an otr driver for 31 yrs, i run 100 psi in my drives and 105 psi in my steers. i'm 99% of the time maxed out on weight. They do not even get but barely warm to touch. from the road friction. i run the north east coast, NJ. PENN back down to IN...

Good Job Getting the Old IH Truck going :) Those Older IH Trucks are Funny :) you cant have 2 check valves in the Brake system, some times the check valve will be in the master Cyl. and some times it will be in the brake booster, but you cant have 2 check valves in the system. the rebuilders put check valves in both the master cyl. and brake booster, be aware of that, and you will never get the brake system to bleed if it has 2 check valves, I learned that the hard way :) I took the truck to the IH repair shop and a old timer mechanic remembered that about the old IH trucks with Hyd. Brakes, just wanted to pass that info along.
I have a 66 Chevy pickup with the 2 speed auto. I bought it in 1985 and still have it. I drove it from Atlanta to Jacksonville FL in 1989. I got 8 MPG on the highway. Like you my max was 55 MPH. I am currently resurecting it and an old triumph from the same era. I miss the simpler days of automotives, the designs were made to look good withou as mus emphasis on aerodynamics. Where you could make it run and get you there with the tools and supplies you could carry in a tool bag. Didnt get there fast, didnt get there in comfort, but we got there in style.

I watched this becauseci really love old International trucks. I really love that you got it running and fettled the brakes and clutch good enough to drive it home. BUT ONE THING I REALLY HATE IS THAT YOU DUBBED MUSIC IN FOR NEARLY THE WHOLE EPISODE. Sure, my hearing sure aint what it used to be, but I want and need to hear what you are saying and listen to what your doing, and listen to the engine. If i need music, hell i can turn the dammed radio on while I watch.

Just about every old school truck of that era listed on Aussie e-bay or Gumtree, says ; "Brakes not working will need a tow or flatbed to remove"!
It was an ongoing repair/ maintenance schedule with brakes from new back then. But they were cheap to fix & it was often interchangeable with other brands of truck & easily adaptable to make it fit. 👍.

That's one amazing Old Gal! Would really like to see a custom renovation done, she appears to be in pretty good shape rust wise, really think she's worth the time (and cash!).
Be glad that you are not driving a truck in this condition in my country (Norway)! If you were pulled over and checked by the police or worse, Statens Veivesen (our equivalent to NHTSA) you'd a) not travel any further b) be without your drivers license for a pretty long time c) have to pay a heavy fine d) probably have to make a court appearance. That said, I really enjoyed this video!

We have strict commercial vehicle laws here in the states as well. As for the brakes & clutch, they would not pass if law enforcement saw them. There are other things that would be questionable.

@@peterbockholm3176 right.. I worked with a guy that supposedly drove a dump truck years ago and the brakes went out, he hit a family in a car, ultimately killing a child in the back seat. I would definitely be hesitant about rolling around in a huge vehicle with shotty brakes..

Awesome truck and awesome adventure! Something about the old gas Loadstars I really like. Wish I had a shop to work on mine. It's a '69 Loadstar 1700 with a utility bed on it and 15k original miles. It's been kept inside most of its life so there is no rust anywhere. Now if only I could find someone who wants a free medium duty utility truck bed all they have to do is unbolt it from the frame and take it. Surprisingly I have not found any fellow IH enthusiasts in my northeastern corner of Calif.

@@rebuildrescue hi, my plans are to convert it to 4wd and make it into a general purpose flat bed truck - for work and to put a camper on when I want to go play, as in wilderness camping. I now have the front drive axle - same axle ratio as the rear and same Dayton spoke type wheels and manual locking hubs. I was also blessed to find a very rare Dana/Spicer 4 speed transfer case from a low mileage municipal truck - very low, low, direct and overdrive gear ratios. I did a small write-up on this transfer case in a couple of the IH forums. But before any serious work can begin, I need to find someone to remove the utility bed.
That sounds like an awesome project…. 4x4 and a camper ! That’ll be the coolest camper conversion not to mention go anywhere !

Growing up as a kid, had a loadstar 1700 with 345; 5-2 trans ; juice brakes. Hauled hundreds of loads of asphalt/stone. She would handle 10 ton no problem,sometimes put 12ton on her. One of best trucks ever built. Made us lots of 💰! Great video thanks for posting !

The old stuff seems to always get you home one way or another meanwhile the new stuff will leave you stranded with a bad sensor or code that disables it even if it has nothing to do with it running. lol 43:39 I wonder if the backup lights were stuck on for the whole drive...brings back a memory of my father when I was a kid in the 1970's. We had a Plymouth Fury with that push button transmission and if you barely pushed the reverse button it would let you go forward with the backup lights on. Dad loved spooking tailgaters with that. hahaha Thanks for the video, that truck is in such beautiful shape, I know you'll get lots of enjoyment out of it!

Such an adventure ! I remember folks putting reverse light switches on their hot rods back in the day and they’d flick them on and off to show they wanted to race. Gotta love the way one of these old cars or trucks bring back memories.

I always had better luck with PB Penetrating oil instead of PB Blaster. They look like similar cans but the PB Penetrating oil seems to cut through the rust better.

I like the videos, good work. Amazing that you could get parts for that old International. That truck is in great shape for it's age.
The exhaust is not a problem. Truck rear ends get hot, I own a 379 Peterbilt, trust me they get hot, if you put your hand on it and you have to jerk your and away quickly, then your getting a little hot.
Those wheels that you have there are called Dayton wheels, so the brake drums are called inside drums. You can get to the brake shoes with the tires and rims on the hubs, or you can remove them.
To get to the brake shoes, you have to pull the rear wheel drive axel shafts out of the differential, take the wheel bearing nuts off the hubs, then the wheel hub and the brake drums come off together, you will need new wheel seals, which would probably be a good idea to change anyway, since it sat for so long.
Then you can get at the rear brake slave cylinders, which could be leaking brake fluid, especially since it sat for so long.
As for the truck wondering around could be caused by a steering shaft U joint that is loose, or failing, there could be one behind that cover inside the cab. Check all the ball joints in the front end
I cracked one on my Pete once, and the truck was all over the road.

Great looking ole truck. Definitely wasnt trying to save weight and money when they built the headache rack. Lol Seems like these old loadstars are getting popular. Rode a gas school bus loadstar mostly thru elementary and middle school.
1967 my dad had the same ,stock diesel enginee, vẻry very strong.

Back in my youth I drove an old IH LoadStar school bus for a church that I was a member of. This was in the late 80s so it was so old that it was retired from the school district. I was always amazed at how well it ran and shifted.

I watched every second of the episode...It reminded me of my olden days when I would work on my vehicle until midnight so it could crank whenever I took off to work or to college...Fortunately, I now own an E350 Mercedes-Benz and an F-150 Ford Platinum and drive a late model company GMC pickup...Blessed...
I recently bought an old mid 60s 1700 Loadstar meself, which has spent the better part of the past 25 years as a glorified farm tractor.
Is a rather new experience, first time tackling a vehicle project this big, and even just your two videos have been a great help troubleshooting mine. I do hope you put up more videos of your work on this vehicle, would like to see how far you take it, and it may just help me too.
Going to get me old girl rolling reliably and safely, and then turn her into me rolling home.

I went to Tuldeo, from the Lansing/Webberville area, to haul loads of grain to Anderson's Grain Elavatore in a 1967 INTERNATIONAL Day Cab. Boy, you could burn your feet by the firewall.

I certainly understand the challenge of getting something going again and driving it home to show your skill and will. Congrats. I too have taken risk getting something back home but I don't think I've ever done something that if my judgement was poor that it might injure or worse someone else. Lets hope that video is never made.

I know it will. We used that truck as a garage truck at a campground. It had no brakes to speak of, we used trees to stop it on the hills 😂. It's a fucking beast of a truck! And that's why we painted Jeff Gordon on the side. If you know Nascar you'll get it 😂.
Love you bro, but that was painful watching you install that master cylinder without bench bleeding it and trying to drive it without even cracking a single bleeder loose. 🤣 I still have the second half to watch, so fingers crossed.

I had to replace the master cylinder and vacuum booster on my 65’ N600 and the brakes are the same way. They will stop on the first push, but feel really firm and will throw you through the windshield on the second push.

Did you bleed the brakes at each wheel? Also you will probably need to bleed the clutch slave cylinder to get a fully operating clutch. Keep up the good work 👍

Exactly the same what i thought... Shouldnt be a big deal to bleed them and is a lot faster and definetly safer than just hitting the pedals...
Also maybe just changing the brake cylinders on the wheels might be a good idea...
I'm guessing he did since he did it with the first master cylinder he tried out, but just a guess lol
This was bugging me big time. I mean yeah you can get air out by pumping but you gotta bleed at the wheels.

42:45 I learned to drive a forklift on a unit that had brakes like that. You had to pump the brakes about 3 times before it would really start to slow down.
That gave me nightmares about driving and losing the brakes. I have no desire to re-live that. I'd keep bleeding it til it works, and if it just wont, then I'd just take the slopes slow, keep it in 2nd.

I've got almost the same dump truck. It has 10 lug bud wheels and air brakes which is nice. I converted it to a tilt hood which is way more convenient. Couldn't say how many loads I've done, it has 230k on the working odometer. Good looking truck congrats
Your a crazy SOB! But hey I've done very similar drives my self. Once changed engines at the top of Snoqualmie Pass in Washington, and drove the car the rest of the way home. It was enough work to swap engines but it was late November and snowing about an inch every 30 minutes. The engine I swapped in was one I pulled out of a wrecked car, and I had only test fired it in the wreck. But hey it stayed in that car till I sold it seven years latter.
