This week in Freedom Month we suprise Sam with his old airplane, the Ghost! This plane was in pieces when Sam sold it and we bought it back once it was put back together! The special thing about this plane is that it's a Starduster just like Freedom. Freedom is finishing up, but we thought that this would give Sam some more motivation. This is the first time Sam has ever flown this plane and he couldn't be happier!

Just some advice, in the future try to have the cotter pin side down on vertical shear pins because at least if the cotter pin breaks, you have a better chance of the pin staying in. Also maybe add a washer under the cotter pin.

I vividly remember the video when you took the 401 for a "walk" on the runway, and it was the first time when Sam had a wondeful happy smile on his face like never before (well, before the engine started to smoke, LOL)!

As an aircraft mechanic and GA pilot, I love seeing this new trend of youtubers getting some of these airplanes running and flying again. I hope this really inspires the next generation of aviators and aircraft mechanics alike.

Just some advice, for the rudder pins, it’s always better to have the cotter pin side on the lower side because if it breaks at least the pin had a chance to stay in.
My thought too, i would also have washers inside the cotter/split pins.
As an A&P it bugs me they dont use standard practices, let alone the manufacturers instruction.
That one pin didn’t fit the other way.
Same goes for any nut/bolt too. The bolt should be orientated so that if the nut is 'lost', then the bolt stays in and doesn't also drop out!

When Sam put the Clovis pin in for the center on the rudder, He pushed it up from the bottom, and I think it be best to push down from the top and then have the cotter key on the bottom. In case the cotter pin falls out or fails.
You are right. I would agree that is a better practice. Also inserting bolts/pins with the heads facing direction of flight so in the event of a nut/cotter pin failure it is less likely to fall out.

@@rebuildrescue I made a later comment but in case you don’t see it, try to have those rudder pins with the cotter side down so if that cotter pins fail you at least have a chance of the whole pin not falling out.

Already seen the comment about putting rudder hinge pins in from the top. My instincts would also have put a washer on the elevator and aileron pins between the hinge surface and the cotter pin. The washer could reduce the side friction on the cotter pin by acting as a bearing surface if the hinge pin decides to start sticking.. I love watching these builds and it was good to see Sam back in the air having fun.

Great progress on Freedom. That is a LOT of work! Good to see Sam happy and getting those projects done! One tip from a CFI: Always stay on centerline. Just because there is runway to the left or right doesn't mean you should plan on using it and allow yourself to get sloppy. When you go to some small strip with a narrow runway you'll thank me!
That would be great- if the Tailwheel would have tracked a little better.

Wow! Freedom is about ready to fly. It was great watching Sam and akso you getting up in the ghost. Man would i like a ride in either one. I never got my tail wheel cert and really don't know what it is like to fly in a tailwheeled aircraft. Got to be a hoot. Great video and happy birthday Sam. Wished i had a starduster!
I'm so jealous! And it's astounding how a 1/3 scale RC plane build so closely emulates the real deal. I have built many 1/3 scale planes and tried to make them as realistic as possible. And yeah I still want the Austin.
You should install a washer on the backside of the aileron hinge pin right before you install the cotter pin.

You guys may want to double check. I’m sure you should have a washer on the pin before the cotter pin. You don’t want the pin rubbing on the hinge.

A flat washer should go on before the cotter pins... Also, all vertical pins should be installed from the top so the pin is at the bottom in case it comes out or breaks you don't lose the shaft as well.
Can I ask a question? When you were putting in the top rudder hinge pin, you inserted it from the bottom, upwards. Would it not be safer to insert it from the top down, and have the split pin free of any mechanical loads during flight; with the pin flange taking the load at the top? If not, why would you insert it bottom up?
I was thinking exactly the same when he pushed it up into place .

Happy birthday Sam I hope you have many more. One of my relatives Norm he always flew a biplane. He flew up until a year before he passed away and I think he was 102 years old back in the mid-90s

A hangar is like a warehouse but with a giant door for air. I used to work construction and this was the worst I ever experienced: August in Miami on a 30 ft lift right at the warehouse ceiling installing old school fiberglass insulation (so long sleeves, gloves, face and eye covering) because the genius architect called for it there instead of just above the offices we were building below...now that's hot. Ever since then I've never "really" felt like anything is too hot.
