Mountains to the west are the Jemez mountains, an agglomeration of several large extinct supervolcanoes and their calderas. I'd recommend Cerro Grande, Caballo mountain, and hiking/backpacking in San Pedro parks wilderness a bit further west. Oh yeah, while you're at it La Luz in the Sandia mountains is legit.
Thank you so much for your excellent description of the trail! We have a husky mix rescue dog with a lot of similar leash issues and have been planning to take him with us to New Mexico later this year but have been worried about how difficult the trails may be for him. This is so helpful!
Atalaya is a great running trail. Thirty five years ago I'd bike up to the Wilderness Gate lateral and lock it at that sharp turn, run (low key) 39 to 38 then hike the steep part to 31 and up to the peak. Take Mace, you can sometimes run into people with dogs that aren't leashed. This review is excellent!
my 'house' mountain. been on the top ridge well over one hundred times. last decade i mostly avoid the main summit but just hit the south summit which is hardly ever visited by people. south summit shows @ 5:15 in the video. theres a neighboring peak about the same height but with hardly any people on it. it can be reached via the north slope of Atalaya & its called Penacho aka Sierra Pelada. its southeast of Atalaya. on the same north slope theres also a way to connect to neighboring Picacho Peak and return by way of that (kind of a loop rather than just back & forth). loads of mountains to climb in the Santa Fe area.
You sir are a BEAST! My wife and one of our friends LOVE hiking and the mountains. Unfortunately, we live so far away we can only do occasional trips to the Rockies but we love your content. One day we wish to live closer and be able to do as much as you do!
Great hike and thanks for sharing - miss seeing Juneau but stoked to see Arya on her first adventure with you guys! Can't wait to see what you get up to next. :)

Heck yeah!!
New Mexico always has some surprises. Thanks for bringing us along. Loving the hair too man!
New Mexico is such a beautiful spot - think a lot of people view it as barren desert, but so much going on there.

Did this in November, and did the Nambe Lake Trail the next day. Highly recommend both!
Yeah we had much bigger plans for the trip but still made the best of it!
Absolutely stunning and very beautiful sceneries. Nicely edited content bud, forest looks stunning.👌👌
Was a sneaky beautiful spot - this hike and Santa Fe in general 💯
