As a born & raised Santa Fean, the vast majority of the travel videos about this city are only mediocre. These 'don'ts' feel like they could have been written by a local, they are very comprehensive, fair and well researched. Thanks for representing my hometown so wonderfully!
But you can't go into Guadalupe without a film crew the old church is off limits he didn't do enough research and same born and raised.

I grew up in NM and hated it. As an adult I left as fast as I could. I have now come back and realized what an incredible state it is. Even tho it’s mis managed by its government it’s diverse cultures and landscapes and history is amazing. And the food is the very best there is.
I also left and came back, and yes, after seeing everywhere else NM is my favorite place in the country. There’s just nowhere else like it. 🏠 ☀️ 💕
And no government is perfect but I appreciate the progressivism here. Most of the country is soul-crushingly conservative. NM is a place where I feel free to be myself.
@@brightharbor_New Mexico thankfully isn’t “Coastal Blue”. It’s more of the classic “Midwestern blue” I grew up with. Sensible. (I’m from Missouri but live in Texas now). The only gripe I’ve got is NM gun laws. I’m expected to not defend myself in Albuquerque, and idk how familiar you are with specifically Albuquerque, but that’s problematic. I avoid this conundrum when visiting NM by not going to Albuquerque. I usually go to Ruidoso or Mora / Taos area. Like every damn body else who lives in Texas.

I grew up in Santa Fe in the 70's and eighty's. This makes me so very homesick. My father Bill Wright had Wright brothers garage and repaired foreign autos. He was well known there. He passed away in 2016. Thanks for the memories.

@@jackieb4608Yes … if you like cold weather and possibly snow. Most days will be sunny but certainly not warm. Our warm season is May - early October like in the Northeast, due to the high elevation here. We can get some nice, warm days in late March/April or later in October, but it can also snow during those times, too.

l live an ocean away; but whenever l travel abroad, l fly to America, my real homeland. New Mexico, l've only passed through it by bus, in the middle of the night. This coming October, l am flying straight to Santa Fe, and l am thrilled.

If I could live one place it would Santa Fe. Absolutely, hands down, most beautiful, lovely city. Not that I’ve visited all cities. Fall is especially beautiful. ❤️🙌🏻🤗☀️

I live in Pennsylvania and visited Santa Fe a couple years ago. I absolutely loved it there! It is a really cool city, the weather is wonderful and the people are friendly. I would live in Santa Fe in a heartbeat!
Love Santa Fe and ABQ. But I say rent a car. There is so much to do experienced best in a car. Turquoise trail, Gathering of Nations Pow Wow, great old churches, etc.

@@ronobrien424 I bet you've only seen the parts that are meant to be seen as a local you see a front. Santa Fe is not nearly as nice as it is when you come visit. The whole city puts up a front if you lived here you would be disappointed.
A wonderful place to visit, especially in the fall. The smell of pinion wood is everywhere. The air is cool but not cold. Great art and food.
By Fall, do you mean November? Is it good to visit in November, or does it usually snow?
Nice video, but don't visit during virus shut down. Very few places are open. Sort of like skiing in July.

Yes, not a Hot Springs. Japanese style hot tubs. Gorgeous, though. Have lodging and treatments, as well. Limited bookings during COVID, so check the website. P.S., it's a nice place to quarantine if you decide to come from out of state during COVID restrictions.

I lived in Albuquerque for a few years, and my first trip to Santa Fe was because of Meow Wolf.
I went to Las Vegas in 2021 because of Meow Wolf's second installation, Omega Mart.
There's also Convergence Station in Denver, along with the Kaliedoscape ride at Elitch Gardens in Colorado. I have yet to go to those.
The next two installations are coming to Texas, starting with the Grapevine Mills mall, in a space that used to be a Bed, Bath, and Beyond...

Here's a tip from a local! If you want GOOD local food, go where the locals eat. Atrisco's in the DeVargas Mall. Here, you won't get "Tex-Mex" tourist food. You'll get down home old fashioned New Mexico cooking. This is not a five star glitzy trap. It's a low key restaurant. It's always crowded and a bit noisy, because we who live here love this place! The DeVargas Mall is out a ways, NOT in the center of town. It's near the National Cemetery and just a neighborhood shopping mall somewhat North of the Plaza. NOT in walking distance either.
Cafe Atrisco is a great choice. Delicious food!
i am a former concierge from a number of Santa Fe hotels. i just wanted to let you know that you hit the nail on the head. you're video almost paraphrases my common introduction to 1st time visitors. i will be recommending this video in the future. i am so happy you visited my hometown and i am glad to see you clearly had a great time. despite not working in tourism anymore, i hope you're experience may draw you return.
I live here in Santa Fe and grew up in Chimayo, New Mexico. I met Wolter and his wife last year when I was playing my guitar and busking here in the plaza! Wolter is such a cool and friendly dude. I have been watching his videos for years and discovered some of his videos way back in 2017 before I went to Brazil for the first time and they helped me tremendously so a big thank you again to you Wolter! And thank you for letting me take a photo with you last year! Meeting you was a dream come true from one traveler to another I really appreciate all of the advice you give in your videos, your friendly nature and down to earth personality! You're the best man! :) All of the advice you gave about my city was spot on! I think you filmed this last year right? One of the unfortunate things with the Railrunner now as an update is that its not operating anymore because of the virus situation. So Uber or Lyft for those that want to come to Santa Fe from Albuquerque would be the only option until our governor reopens the Rail Runner Train. And yes! We are friendly here for the most part! haha especially to tourists. You're welcome to come back anytime Wolter it was a pleasure having you here in Santa Fe ^^

Don't forget to take a road trip up to Taos. The gorge is breathtaking and there is no place on Earth like Taos.

If you make it to Taos, go on further to Taos Ski Valley, a very beautiful place. Stoke up on oxygen at the oxygen bar in downtown Santa Fe right before you go, as TSV elevation is 9,000 ft.

A recommendation to potential tourists from said local: don't discount the significance of the Rail Runner train for getting between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Although presently you shouldn't be traveling for leisure amid the pandemic, and thus the train isn't currently running, it is still one of, if not the most inexpensive means of traveling this distance. Scheduling may seen inconvenient, but the shuttles alone often aren't worth it. There are buses and shuttles that can take you a nearby station from the ABQ Sunport and the train is not that much slower than a shuttle. Uber will cost you at least $75 to make that trip one way, and most shuttles will cost $100 or more even if you are traveling alone. Full one way fare's for two travelers costs only $18 on the train and reduced rates for seniors, youth 10-17, students with current ID, and medicare recipients, it would be only $8. For that price you can get to Santa Fe a bit slower and enjoy some lovely views that you won't get from the highway. Just something to keep in mind :)
I’m from beautiful southern New Mexico and I just want to say our whole state is beautiful and has so much to do and see! Santa Fe is nice LOVE Taos the gila, Jemez, white sands, ruidoso, inn of the mountain gods, Carlsbad caverns, beautiful areas near los alamos, Carson national forest, Taos Pueblo, Albuquerque los ranches, just be safe in Albuquerque... enjoy our land of enchantment

I drove through ABQ in a semi exactly once and decided that may be hard to do especially considering NM having strict gun laws.
I live about a mile from where youre standing. Pre covid i was a cook, worked at Geronimos, Radish and Rye, Coyote Cafe, 2nd St. Brewery, Violet Crown and more.
Your list is almost all my favorites from when I lived there. Just add LaChoza and Dinner for Two.

I celebrated my 50th birthday here in 2009. There was no "Margarita Trail" (to my knowledge) but we did our own Margarita Crawl through the Plaza/Old Towne. We paid anywhere from $3 to $12 for a margarita -- hitting the Happy Hours, of course! And the cuisine: FAB!
I went to meow wolf when it was fairly new (perks of being a native new mexican lol) AND OH MY GOSH HE IS RIGHT PLS DONT SKIP OUT ON IT ITS MYSTERIOUS THE ART IS GORGEOUS AND ITS SO MUCH FUN

Don't forget the Native American History Museums and local tribes have a huge influence on Santa Fe, as well as the Spanish Colonists, and History is as big as an attraction as the arts are. That is what brought my young family here 28 years ago, and we stayed.
Chile... E! That's the peppers. Chili is that stuff from Texas. We do have Chile con carne, which will be a green or red sauce over ground beef, eaten with tortillas.
Neither is hotter than the other. Green is bright and fruity, red is earthy and smoky. October is when everywhere is roasting the year's crop, smells so good!
Ten visits under my belt and many more to come 😀. The energy is sublime.

I've watched many of your videos lately and wondered how much knowledge or truth there is to your do's and don'ts.. I'm from NM I grew up knowing NM and Santa Fe. It’s actually the second most visited tourist destination in America. What planet are you from?
Two of my favorite places in Santa Fe are the San Miguel Chapel (I've never experienced a more peaceful and tranquil setting in my entire life- must be the thick Adobe walls that begets the quietude) and the "after sunset" view looking east on W San Francisco St towards The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi (from the vicinity of the Galisto St intersection). I could've gazed down W San Francisco St from dusk till dawn the view is so impressive. I deeply cherish the Southwestern United States, every visit is enlightening.

The beauty in New Mexican food is the simplicity of its ingredients. You really don't add too many spices beyond salt garlic and maybe some pepper. The chile really does the talking, which is why its so important to have the good stuff. Some people add oregano and cumin but I personally prefer without it, chile really does have a strong enough flavor on its own.
Also Tex-Mex is mostly a creation of Mexican-American immigration whereas New Mexican food is a creation dating back to the Spanish Colonial period with a lot of influence from the Native Pueblos and Dine people who many New Mexicans are ancestry to.
Edit: Just an example, some influences from indigenous cuisine include pinon pine nuts, fry bread, corn tortillas, and calabacitas
Sopapillas were also invented in Albuquerque, the word come from the extinct 14th century Muslim-Spanish language Mozarabic. The language most likely came to New Mexico during the two major migration waves in 1598 and 1693-6 as recent converts from Jeduasim and Islam fled to the farthest reaches of the Spanish Empire to practice their old religious beliefs in secret.

Thank you! I lived in Santa Fe for years and miss it something fierce. You did a good job of discussing the reality of Santa Fe. (Also, many of us who live(d) here are younger and tourists are of all ages, though it does have a large retired crowd.)
Edited to add: If you do Meow Wolf, remember that what you get out of it depends on what you put into it. You have to get the right mentality prior to starting. Many exhibits need you to climb/crawl or otherwise get involved.
Also, there's A LOT more to Santa Fe than the Plaza and a few other places. There are many pueblos that do tours. Waterfalls are within 30 minutes. The surrounding areas are fascinating.

Skip Santa fe in the winter unless you ski El Paso has better art and food.

born here all my life (it's a saying) and I would like to say, well done! So many of these travel videos don't really capture the true beauty of NM, but you sir worded and said everything so well, you almost sounded like a local. it's true that Santa Fe isn't for everyone, and I wouldn't recommend it if you are traveling with kids. even if you find it pretty, it's likely your kid would be bored out of their mind
I am born and raised in New Mexico and I respectfully disagree. It's not exactly Disneyland, but there are things that kids can enjoy. You just have to know where to look and be willing to take a day trip as this video suggests. Most kids will love Meow Wolf, the Balloon Fiesta, the ABQ Bio park, the Sandia Peak Tramway, and the NM History Museum. If you're willing to venture out even further, there is White Sands Missile Range, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and the International UFO Museum.

Not everything go visit the old Guadalupe they won't let you in. No restaurants ask you if you want Christmas but they will give it if you ask. Still living here this video was off about a lot and left out the most interesting things. You obviously haven't been here in a while but probably don't want to. Nowadays it's teenagers shooting teenagers and no media coverage cause God forbid the cities reputation be harmed Santa Fe has changed for the worst.

I've been there a several times and i love the city and the whole area so much. Hope, i can come back some day...
If you hang around long enough, you'll see a celebrity or two and maybe a movie shoot. I used to eat lunch on the plaza (I worked 2 blocks away) and one day Robert Wagner and his wife walked past. Another evening I had dinner at the Thunderbird, and when I came downstairs, Nick Nolte was inside the Plaza Cafe shooting a scene for a show.

Been to SF more times than I can remember. We almost always stay at Pueblo Bonito, a historic compound bed and breakfast , within easy walking distance of the plaza. Our favorite restaurants are Maria's and the Shed, try the carne adovada! Bandoleer is a favorite stop of ours.

You once asked "Where have you visited and wished you had stayed longer?" Well, Santa Fe is right up there. When I land in a city for business I almost always travel on Sunday to get the lay of the land before my Monday through whenever meetings. While in Albuquerque, I took a day trip to Santa Fe; found the plaza; visited all the nearby places of interest within walking and really enjoyed a very fast afternoon. I actually ended up back in Santa Fe for a brief meeting that week. 😐😀 Excellent comprehensive video, Mark. One of my favorites!

Love Santa Fe, especially the old historic part of town. I’ve been there 4 times. Had a good experience at Hilton Santa Fe Historic Plaza on last trip and recommend dinner at Los Magueyes nearby. The train between Santa Fe and Albuquerque worked well for me. Don’t forget Georgia O’Keeffe’s studio up in Abiquiu, about an hour away. I also really, really liked the Cumbres & Toltec train up in Chama, about 2 hours away. It’s a must for rail fans.

I totally forgot about that staircase, I have a spooky photo of a ghost in front of it that we took back in 1999. Wow that unlocked an old memory! What a great video, I've lived in Albuquerque for 8 years and never considered some of this stuff, definitely want to check them out before we move away :) Fun fact, we ate lunch next to Tom Hanks (and Colin Hanks) at the Frontier in Albuquerque and he LOVES New Mexico food and chile!

When I meet transplants and sometimes visitors i always why they came/moved to Santa Fe. I find it so interesting because I personally would have a very low desire to come here 😅 I’d have tons more cities at the top of my bucket list before Santa Fe lol.

Just like in Miami Beach, which is expensive to stay in an hotel and shop at different stores but there are nice places to see and do in Miami like visiting the shops and restaurants of Hialeah and there are lots of cuban restaurants that are less expensive and there are accommodations in hotels and motels in Hialeah as well.

Wife and I plan to retire to Santa Fe next year from Ohio. A 15 year long dream for us. Love Santa Fe, but New Mexico taxes the hell out of retirees. One of only 17 states that tax pension and social security. They need to repeal that.
@@paulmatulavich7321 Removing the income tax on SS comes up in our legislature periodically, but it's probably a few years off due to the revenue fall-off from COVID-19 and low gas and oil prices (a big source of NM revenue).

Great advice for one of my favorite vacation cities. Can't afford to live there but it's great to visit! The Folk Art Museum is my favorite - a world class collection! There's also a fantastic Mexican market about 15 minute drive from downtown, a wonderful place for an affordable souvenir. I love your comment about the stars - we drove outside of town one night and the stars were unbelieveable. You ate at one of the best restaurants there - a yummy and beautiful place. Looks like you and Jocelyn had a rare vacation alone - good for you!
It was a very rare occasion that we got to go together. It was a really great time. And yes best restaurant. So good
U know my family is one of the families that have lived in that area since the 1600s and let me tell u--the tourists and retiree transplants have made the city too expensive for people who have lived for centuries there.
Late but I’m going to Santa Fe, West Texas (yeah NM is our vacation state) this weekend and this is very helpful.
Please remember to fish and fly fish nearby, Ski and snowboard and nearby also is golf and well so many things that were left off but I think it might be the time of year he was there anyway I think Santa Fe is one of the best trips. I love New Mexico

Melody Hagaman I missed my flight to from Phoenix to Toronto, so they put me on a next flight the next day. I took the 10 straight to New Mexico. It was cool scenery. Way different from where I live.

New Mexico is my second favorite state (after my home state of Minnesota) and I always feel at home while in Santa Fe. I usually break your "don't" rule of not just eating New Mexican, the food is just too good. It's Christmas everyday when I'm in NM!

THANK YOU for visiting NM for one and two for doing a vid of Santa Fe. I have really enjoyed ur vids on other places over the last couple of years. To see one from my home state is very exciting. New Mexico has a lot to offer the historic sites alone can keep you busy. The state is huge by European standards and traveling from site to site can be hundreds of miles. When the pandemic is over I hope everyone who visits the States considers New Mexico as a stop. Also IT IS NOT PART OF MEXICO. I have to explain that more than I can believe, even to Americans. Please check out as many sites as u can here. Chaco canyon is an amazing place.
Jinja's a fun '30s Singapore style restaurant co-owned by actor Gene Hackman, just next to the De Vargas Mall. La Terraza on top of La Fonda hotel and Cowgirl's restaurant on Guadalupe also very good.
